Efforts to arrest Atiq’s wife, Ashraf’s brother-in-law intensify

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: The Uttar Pradesh Police and the Special Task Force (STF) have intensified efforts to arrest Shaista Parveen, widow of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, and Saddam, brother-in-law of Ashraf whose was also gunned down with Atiq on April 15.

Police teams are carrying out raids in localities and villages of Prayagraj and neighbouring Kaushambhi district, in all known possible hideouts, including the houses of their kin.

Police officials believe that with the murders of Atiq and his younger brother Ashraf, as well as death of Atiq’s son Asad Ahmad in an encounter with the STF in Jhansi on April 13, Shaista remains the only one who could shed more light on the planning and execution of February 24 killings of lawyer Umesh Pal and his two police guards.

    MS Education Academy

Named as an accused in Umesh Pal murder case, Shaista has been on the run since the February 24 murder.

She carries a Rs 50,000 reward on her head.

Shaista did not attend the funerals of her son Asad on April 15 as well as of her husband and brother-in-law held at Kasari Masari graveyard on April 16.

According to a senior police official: “During the past 48 hours, raids have been carried out by police teams in search of Shaista Parveen at Baretha, Mariyadeeh, and Hatwa areas of Kaushambhi district, along with Rajruppur, Chakia, Kasari Masari, and Bamrauli areas of Prayagraj. Even the house of Shaista’s father Mohd Haroon has been searched in Kasari Masari area of Prayagraj.”

Several close relatives are also being questioned about her whereabouts, he added.

Sources claim that Shaista was last seen in Prayagraj in a commercial car and the police are also reaching out to the owners of travel agencies to find out if they have any leads.

Police officials claim that Shaista played a vital part in the conspiracy to eliminate Umesh Pal and has been managing Atiq’s financial affairs since he was jailed.

“Shaista procured the licences for three weapons — including a sophisticated rifle and two pistols — in her name using fake address with the help of Atiq’s connections without even having to go for the mandatory test firing required before being issued a weapon license,” said a police officer.

This has led to the first three cases being registered against her at Colonelganj police station in 2009 under different relevant sections of IPC and Arms Act, the official added.

According to police, Shaista started actively managing her husband’s empire after Atiq went to jail in February 2017. She was even video-recorded walking along with Atiq’s known henchmen in city.

She also started making inroads in political corridors soon after.

Police claim that at the behest of Atiq, she used to collect extortion money from builders and other traders.

She gave the money extorted through such sources to assailants involved in the murder of Umesh Pal and his two police guards.

While conducting raids to nab Shaista post February 24 murders, police even recovered cash worth Rs 72 lakh that she had allegedly given to her servant Rakesh to hide, said a police officer.

Apart from the three cases (dating back to 2009) lodged in connection with procuring weapons illegally, Shaista also has a fourth case registered against her on February 24 at Dhoomanganj police station under relevant sections of IPC which relates to gunning down of mesh Pal and his two police guards in Sulem Sarai locality of Prayagraj.

Rally in Pulivendula to protest Bhaskar Reddy’s arrest by CBI

    [ad_1]

Kadapa: A rally was organised in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district on Sunday to protest the arrest of Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy’s father Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy by the CBI in Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy murder case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Bhaskar Reddy from his residence in Pulivendula and shifted him to Hyderabad, where he will be produced before a magistrate.

Bhaskar Reddy’s supporters took out a rally in the town to protest against the arrest. Shops and business establishments also remained closed as a mark of protest.

A rally was held from R&B Guest House to the Old Bus Stand. Wearing black badges, Bhaskar Reddy’s supporters staged a protest on Kadapa-Tadipatri highway. The protestors set afire an effigy to protest against what they call the biased approach of the CBI.

MLA R. Shivaprasad Reddy alleged that the CBI was targeting Avinash Reddy’s family members instead of taking action against the guilty.

Municipal Chairman Varaprasad also participated in the protest and condemned Bhaskar Reddy’s arrest.

Meanwhile, former MLA Vardarajula Reddy criticized YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) for organising rallies and staging protests. He said the CBI acted as per law to arrest Bhaskar Reddy but it was surprising that the ruling party organised the protest.

The CBI has booked Bhaskar Reddy for criminal conspiracy, murder and for causing disappearance of evidence.

  • BJP has ‘instructed’ CBI to arrest me, will honestly answer questions posed by agency: Kejriwal

BJP has ‘instructed’ CBI to arrest me, will honestly answer questions posed by agency: Kejriwal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Ahead of his appearance before the CBI, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday alleged that the BJP might have ordered the probe agency to arrest him and said they are “very powerful and can send anyone to jail”.

In a five-minute video message on Twitter, Kejriwal said he would truthfully and honestly answer questions posed by the CBI in the excise case as he has nothing to hide.

“I have been summoned by CBI today and I will give all the answers with honesty. These people are very powerful. They can send anyone to jail, it does not matter if that person has committed any crime or not,” the AAP leader said.

    MS Education Academy

“Since yesterday, all of their leaders are screaming at top of their voices that Kejriwal will be arrested and I think BJP has instructed CBI also that Kejriwal should be arrested. If BJP has given an order, then who is CBI? CBI is going to arrest me,” he said.

He also asserted that he can sacrifice his life for the country

“I love the country and Bharat Mata, can sacrifice my life for the country,” he added.

Kejriwal is set to appear before the CBI on Sunday in connection with the excise policy case and will be accompanied to the agency’s office by his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann and cabinet colleagues.

He is being summoned as a witness and is not an accused in the excise policy case in which his former deputy Manish Sisodia was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26. Sisodia was last month arrested by the ED.

It is alleged that the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP. The policy was later scrapped.

Officials said the CBI may also quiz Kejriwal on the statements of other accused where they have indicated the manner in which policy was allegedly influenced to favour some liquor businessmen and the ‘South liquor lobby’.

In addition, the agency may also seek his role in the formulation of the excise policy and his knowledge about alleged influence being cast by the traders and ‘South lobby’ members, the officials said.

Kejriwal may also be asked if he was involved in the formulation of the policy before it was given approval, they said.

  • Rajasthan HC orders stay on arrest of Ramdev accused of hurting religious sentiments

Rajasthan HC orders stay on arrest of Ramdev accused of hurting religious sentiments

    [ad_1]

The Rajasthan High Court has stayed the arrest of Ramdev over an FIR registered against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and directed the yoga guru to appear before the investigating officer for questioning by May 20.

Justice Manoj Kumar Garg gave the direction while hearing a petition by Ramdev seeking quashing of the FIR.

The FIR was filed at the Chohtan police station in Barmer on February 5 on the complaint of Pathai Khan against the yoga guru’s alleged derogatory remarks against Islam and Christianity at a religious event in Barmer on February 2.

    MS Education Academy

In provocative remarks at a meeting of seers, Yoga guru Ramdev had accused Muslims of resorting to terror and abducting Hindu women while comparing Hinduism to Islam and Christianity. He alleged that the two faiths were obsessed with conversion while Hinduism taught its followers to do good.

In his complaint, Khan claimed that Ramdev had made his remarks “deliberately… so that there is animosity against Islam”.

At the gathering of seers in Barmer, Ramdev had allegedly said, “Muslims offer namaz five times a day and then do whatever they want. They kidnap Hindu girls and commit all kinds of sins. Our Muslim brothers commit a lot of sins but they definitely offer namaz as they are taught to do so. Hindu religion is not like this.” A video of his speech had surfaced on social media.

“I am not criticising anyone but people are obsessed only with this. Some people talk about converting the entire world to Islam and others want to convert the world to Christianity,” Ramdev said. He allegedly claimed that these faiths had no other agenda.

  • Viveka murder case: CBI makes key arrest

Viveka murder case: CBI makes key arrest

    [ad_1]

Kadapa: Stepping up the investigation into the 2019 murder case of former Andhra Pradesh minister Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday made a key arrest.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CBI arrested G. Uday Kumar Reddy at Pulivendula in Kadapa district. He is said to be a close follower of Kadapa MP Y. S. Avinash Reddy, the nephew of the deceased, who has been questioned by the agency multiple times in recent months.

The CBI team arrested Uday after issuing him a notice under section 41 A of the Criminal Procedure Code. He was earlier questioned by the CBI in the past.

    MS Education Academy

The investigation agency was shifting Uday to Hyderabad, where a CBI court is hearing the case since November last year following direction of the Supreme Court.

The development has come a couple of weeks after the Supreme Court constituted a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CBI and directed it to complete the investigation by April 30.

Uday, said to be an employee of Uranium mine at Tummalapalli in Kadapa district, had filed a private case against CBI S.P. Ram Singh in Kadapa Court last year. On the court’s direction, police had booked against Ram Singh in February last year following a complaint by Uday that the officer coerced him to give false testimony in the murder case. However, Andhra Pradesh High Court later stayed the case against the CBI SP.

On the day when Vivekananda Reddy was murdered at his residence, Uday had allegedly gone there along with Avinash Reddy and Shiva Shankar.

Uday was allegedly present at the residence of Y. S. Bhaskar Reddy, brother of the deceased and father of Avinash Reddy.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and uncle of present Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was found murdered at his residence in Pulivendula of Kadapa district on the night of March 15, 2019, a few days before the elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The Supreme Court transferred the case to Hyderabad in November last year while observing that doubts raised by Suneetha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

Deceased’s brother Bhaskar Reddy and the latter’s son Avinash Reddy are facing allegations for their involvement in the murder. Avinash, cousin of the chief minister, has denied the allegations.

  • FBI makes arrest in investigation of suspected leaker of classified intelligence

FBI makes arrest in investigation of suspected leaker of classified intelligence

    [ad_1]

    image

Teixeira was arrested “in connection with the unauthorized removal, retention and transmission of classified national defense information,” the attorney general said, using language that tracks violations of the Espionage Act.

No specific charges were immediately announced, but Teixeira is expected to appear in federal court in Boston on Friday.

During a hastily-assembled appearance before reporters at Justice Department headquarters, Garland spoke for less than a minute and provided no other details about the investigation beyond saying that it was “ongoing.”

An FBI statement also confirmed Teixeira’s arrest and said it related to “his alleged involvement in leaking classified U.S. government and military documents.”

“Since late last week the FBI has aggressively pursued investigative leads and today’s arrest exemplifies our continued commitment to identifying, pursuing, and holding accountable those who betray our country’s trust and put our national security at risk,” the FBI statement added.

The 21-year-old appears to have been part of a small group on the Discord social media platform. He first wrote about the sensitive information in written paragraphs, paraphrased from the documents, months ago, as POLITICO previously reported. Starting in January, he began posting photographs of printouts of the documents, which had been folded and then smoothed out.

The New York Times was the first to report that the likely leaker was Teixeira and said he was a member of the intelligence unit of the Massachusetts Air National Guard.

The Washington Post first reported Thursday that the individual who leaked the documents on Discord worked on a military base. Teixeira was reportedly considered the leader of the small Discord channel, the Post reported, and espoused a love for guns and God.

The documents Teixeira allegedly leaked contained highly classified information, including from papers marked “Top Secret,” about the war in Ukraine and other global topics such as China, Iran and the Russian paramilitary group, Wagner.

President Joe Biden, speaking to journalists earlier in the day during a trip to Ireland, seemed to downplay the gravity of the breach which has roiled the intelligence community, the Pentagon and U.S. relationships with a variety of allies.

“I’m concerned that it happened. But there’s nothing contemporaneous that I’m aware of that’s of great consequence,” Biden said while outside the residence of his Irish counterpart.

But the public leak of classified intelligence is the largest since Wikileaks, which from 2006 to 2021 led to the publication of millions of emails, documents and other sensitive materials online.

While the recent breach is much smaller in scale, the documents exposed in extraordinary detail the extent to which the U.S. spies on its allies and adversaries and included analyses that had been compiled just weeks before they were posted. The papers exposed battlefield planning by both the Ukrainians and the Russians, including detailed maps of troop movements, and that the U.S. had asked South Korea to provide Kyiv with ammunition.

The Biden administration first began looking into the leak last week, including how the documents first ended up online and how they were able to circulate for months without detection. The Justice Department is leading the interagency investigation.

DoD is reviewing its policies related to safeguarding classified material, including assessing how and where intelligence is shared, Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said Thursday.

“It’s important to understand that we do have stringent guidelines in place … this was a deliberate, criminal act, a violation of those guidelines,” Ryder said. “Anyone who violates those rules is doing so willfully.”

    Lara Seligman contributed reporting.

Hyderabad: ‘Bandi Sanjay’s arrest is undemocratic,’ says Kishan

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Following the arrest of Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Union Minister Kishan Reddy on Thursday termed the latter’s arrest as ‘undemocratic’ and said that the state BJP chief’s arrest was to divert people’s attention.

“Bandi Sanjay’s arrest is undemocratic. His’s arrest was to divert people’s attention. BJP leaders are not afraid of cases and jails. Lakhs of BJP workers are ready to go to jail for the sake of the people,” said Kishan Reddy while talking to the reporters.

Kishan Reddy said that Bandi Sanjay was arrested in the middle of the night and mentally harassed.

    MS Education Academy

“Sanjay was tortured like a terrorist. It is alleged that the police arrested Bandi Sanjay just to see happiness in KCR’s eyes. He said that as the elections are approaching, KCR’s anarchic rule is visible,” he said.

Earlier, BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar along with three others were sent to judicial custody till April 19 in the SSC paper leak case.

“Bandi Sanjay and 3 others have been sent to judicial custody till April 19 and will be shifted to Karimnagar jail,” said Advocate Karuna Sagar, lawyer of Bandi Sanjay.

“We will be filing a contempt proceeding against the investigative officer for violating the SC guidelines. We are planning to challenge the order in High Court tomorrow,” he added.

On Wednesday, Bandi Sanjay Kumar was detained by police late at night from his residence in Karimnagar.

The office of Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar has said that the detention of Bandi Sanjay Kumar in the SSC paper leak case is “totally undemocratic” and there is a “clear-cut conspiracy” in the whole episode.

“The Police have not yet announced officially on what grounds he was detained. There is a clear-cut conspiracy in the whole episode. The detention of Bandi Sanjay is totally undemocratic. The BRS government is gradually losing credibility among the public hence they are performing these stunts. This paper leak is out and out a failure of the BRS government,” the office of Bandi Sanjay Kumar told ANI.

An official from Bandi Sanjay Kumar’s office also alleged that the detention has been done to cover up the recent failures of the Telangana government regarding school and job examinations.
