    SRINAGAR: In a major policy decision to promote and strengthen common identity and approach in service matters amongst senior leadership, Indian Army has asked its officers from the rank of Brigadier and above to don a common uniform from the month of August.

    Quoting military sources, KNO reported that different types of uniforms and accessories have a specific association with respective arms, regiments, and services in the Indian Army for recognition with distinct identity within the arms or regiment for junior leadership

    “Different types of uniform and accouterments have a specific association to respective arms and regiments in the Army. This recognition with distinct identity within the Arms or Regiment or Services is essential for junior leadership and the rank and file to further strengthen friendship, esprit de corps and regimental ethos which is the bedrock of soldiering,” sources said.

    They said, “In order to promote and strengthen common identity and approach in service matters amongst senior leadership, beyond the boundaries of regimentation, the Indian Army has decided to adopt a common uniform for Brigadier and above rank officers irrespective of the parent cadre and appointment.”

    “This will also reinforce the Indian Army’s character to be a fair and equitable organization,” they said adding, “The decision was taken after detailed deliberations during the recently concluded Army Commanders Conference and extensive consultations with all stakeholders.”

    At the unit or battalion level, sources said that a distinct sense of identity reflects a strong bond among officers and men in the same regiment.

    “The headgear, shoulder rank badges, gorget patches, belt, and shoes of senior officers of flag rank (Brigadier and above) will now be standardized and common,” they revealed.

    “The flag-rank officers will now not wear any lanyard. The changes will be implemented from August 1, 2023,” said sources.

    In the Indian Army, Brigadier and above officers are those who have already commanded units, and battalions and are mostly posted at headquarters or establishments where officers from all arms and services work and function together, they said.

    Lahore: Supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) headed to the army installations in many parts of the country on Tuesday as the law and order situation continued to deteriorate following the arrest of Imran Khan, media reports said.

    Videos emerged on social media soon after former Prime Minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan was arrested from outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday, Samaa TV reported.

    The clips showed charged PTI activists raising slogans against the government as well as the Pakistan Army, the report said.

    The baton-wielding demonstrators reached inside the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi, Samaa TV reported.

    In other videos, they could be seen vandalising army properties in different cities, including Lahore and Karachi.

    The police fired tear gas shells to disperse the demonstrators but to no avail as the law enforcers retreated.

    There are reports of PTI supporters breaking into the residence of a military officer in the cantonment area in Lahore, Dawn reported.

    Journalist Murtaza Ali Shah shared this information in a tweet, saying, “PTI supporters break into military officer’s house in Lahore Cantt.”

    He also shared a video showing a group of men, some of them with their faces partly covered, entering a gated premises with sticks. They were later seen using the sticks to hit walls, Dawn reported.

    Men in uniform could also be seen on the premise.

    Meanwhile, PTI workers from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa gathered on the streets of Lakki Marwat district under the leadership of provincial party president Muhammad Iqbal after the arrest of Khan.

    The PTI supporters resorted to burning tyres and closed down the Indus Highway.

    After Khan’s arrest, PTI had called for protests across Pakistan following which roads were blocked on the main thoroughfares in the major cities, including Karachi.

    PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi reiterated the party’s call for “peaceful protest”, following the arrest of Khan.

    In a video message shared on PTI’s Twitter habdle, Qureshi could be heard urging the people to “protest peacefully and express solidarity with PTI Chairman Imran Khan”.

    Qureshi said he was leaving for Islamabad where he had called a meeting of the PTI leadership and a six-member committee to determine the next course of action, Dawn reported.

    Qureshi said, “In my view, the plan to hold a series of rallies earlier announced by Imran Khan Sahib still holds. We have to convert them into rallies of peaceful protests.”

    SRINAGAR: The Indian Army is gearing up to turn their soldiers into real-life ‘Iron Man’ with the help of jet pack suits that will provide them with enhanced surveillance capabilities at the country’s borders with China and Pakistan, as well as in the conflict ridden region of Jammu and Kashmir, The EurAsian Times reported.

    These suits are propelled by engines running on gas or liquid fuel and can carry a person weighing at least 80 kilograms while flying at a speed of at least 50 kilometers per hour for a minimum of eight minutes. The Indian Army recently got a demonstration of the technology from the UK-based company, Gravity Industries, owned by ex-marine and innovator Richard Browning.

    Quoting an Indian Army official, The EurAsian Times reported that the jet pack suits are coming as an aerial surveillance platform, and their effectiveness will vary depending on the terrain, wind factor, and vegetation. However, the army is also exploring the possibility of equipping soldiers with infrared goggles to scan through thick vegetation to identify enemy combatants.

    The Indian Army’s requirements for the purchase specify that the equipment should be suitable for desert, marine, and mountain warfare. Military strategists are also considering the use of jet pack suits as another significant disruptor in the tactical battle space, similar to drone technology on the battlefield.

    The technology can be used as a force multiplier to counter terrorists in urban and semi-urban settings. According to Gravity Industries, the military version of the jet suit is powered by five gas turbine engines that generate more than 1,000 horsepower and produce 144 kilograms of thrust, allowing vertical lift of up to 12,000 feet.

    The Indian Navy’s marine commando (MARCOS) also sees potential in the jet pack suits as a mode of insertion, allowing soldiers to gain vantage points for reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, or placing a sniper. Additionally, the suits can be used for quick exhilaration.

    The UK’s Royal Navy and the US Marine Corps already use these jet pack suits in various limited roles. The Indian Army’s interest in this innovative technology comes in the backdrop of skirmishes with the People’s Liberation Army along the Line of Actual Control between India and China.

    Imphal: Army drones and helicopters kept a close watch on Manipur on Sunday as curfew was relaxed in some parts of the Northeastern state, which was rocked by ethnic violence over the last few days, officials said.

    So far, 23,000 people have been rescued from the violence-hit areas and were moved to military garrisons, they said.

    Personnel of the Army and Assam Rifles held flag marches as life started crawling back to somewhat normal, but the tension was palpable. Sources said around 10,000 security personnel have been deployed in the state, which has been on the boil since Wednesday.

    Governor Anusuiya Uikey chaired a meeting with Security Advisor Kuldip Singh and Operational Commander Ashutosh Sinha.

    At the meeting, the two officers shared their suggestions with the governor to resolve the crisis, said a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan.

    Uikey advised the officers that arrangements be made for the safe return of the people who are in relief camps at present, it said.

    The clashes broke out after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the ten hill districts of the state to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, leading to the deaths of at least 54 people.

    Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal valley. Tribals — Nagas and Kukis — constitute another 40 per cent of the population and live in the hill districts.

    In Hyderabad, Union Minister for the Development of North Eastern Region G Kishan Reddy told PTI that the Centre was ready for talks with the warring groups in Manipur and resolve their issues.

    “Please come forward to solve the issues in a peaceful manner. The government is ready. You have seen the farmers’ issue. When it was peaceful, we tried to convince them. As the issue was not resolved, we agreed to their demand, and those bills (three farm laws) were withdrawn. So, the government is not adamant,” he said.

    He stressed that people’s welfare was the government’s main agenda, urging the different groups to come forward for talks.

    Reddy said the government will take care of those who suffered losses due to violence, and order a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.

    “If they have any problem, it is the responsibility of the state and central governments to resolve it. We should all maintain restraint. We should resolve the issues through discussions, and not through violence. Nothing can be achieved through violence,” he added.

    As the situation was improving, the state Home Department directed the district magistrates and deputy commissioners to relax the curfew in parts of their districts from 1 pm to 3 pm every day, according to a notification.

    The restrictions were relaxed in Churachandpur, which was the epicentre of the violence, from 7 am to 10 am on Sunday to allow people buy essential items such as food and medicines.

    On Monday, the curfew will be relaxed in Imphal West district from 5 am to 8 pm.

    “Imphal City is area where major markets, shops, godown, business entities, etc. are located which provides various essential items which will not only cater to the needs of the District population but also to the needs of the entire State (sic),” said the notification, reasoning the relaxation.

    Over the last 24 hours, the Army significantly enhanced surveillance efforts through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and helicopters within the Imphal Valley, a defence statement said in the morning.

    Meanwhile, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) took various measures to help passengers at the Imphal airport, while the airlines have waived rescheduling and cancellation charges for flights operating here.

    A total of 10,531 passengers have travelled via the Imphal airport, which handled 108 flights in the last few days.

    Different states also continued rescuing their people from the state.

    Andhra Pradesh rescued more than 100 students, while Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde said 22 students from the state were stuck in Manipur and arrangements were being made to bring them back home.

    Tripura rescued 208 of its students and Nagaland evacuated 676 people from the violence-hit state. Sikkim also rescued 128 students.

    New Delhi: The women officers of the Territorial Army (TA) with Engineer Regiments of the TA will be posted along the Line of Control (LoC), an official said on Sunday.

    Following approval by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, women officers will also be posted as staff officers at TA Group Headquarters, Directorate General of Territorial Army in Delhi, as per organisational requirements.

    The Defence Ministry said that this progressive policy measure is aimed at enhancing the scope of employment of women officers as well as meeting their professional aspirations.

    They will now serve and train under the same conditions as their male counterparts in a wider range of units and appointments.

    The Territorial Army had commenced commissioning women Officers since 2019, in Ecological Task Force Units, TA Oil sector units and TA Railway Engineer Regiment.

    Based on the experience gained during this period, it has been decided to extend the scope of further employment for women officers in TA, a Defence Ministry official said.

    The Territorial Army is based on a Citizen Soldiers’ army concept and officers undergo annual training on basic military skills while remaining gainfully employed in civilian life.

    Significantly, the armed forces have taken several measures, including assigning command roles to women, grooming them for future leadership roles and allowing them to join artillery regiments, to promote gender equality.

    SRINAGAR: A 26-year-old youth was critically injured due to electrocution while installing CCTV cameras for a local army unit in the Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday.
    Family members of the youth identified as Danish Khazir son of Khazir Mohammad Bhat of Badam Bagh Sopore told said that he was called by Army to install CCTV cameras nearby at an Army camp in Sopore on Sunday afternoon.
    “Danish was working in a nearby complex outside the Army camp located near GDC Sopore when some Army personnel from the camp came and took him away to install CCTV cameras for them near crossing,” they said.
    They alleged that Danish got electrocuted due to the negligence of Army personnel while installing CCTV cameras as they (Army) had not snapped the electricity supply.
    Meanwhile, family members and locals held a protest demonstration demanding action against the Army personnel.
    Danish was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where from he has been referred to Srinagar in critical condition.
    Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Sopore, Shabir Nawab, while confirming the incident, said that the youth is critically injured and has been taken to Srinagar hospital.
    He said FIR has been registered in this regard and further investigation is going on—(KNO)

    Sopore, May 07: A 26-year-old youth was critically injured due to electrocution while installing CCTV cameras for a local army unit in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday even as family of the youth alleged negligence on part of the Army. Police have filed an FIR in this regard, while further investigation is going on.

    Family members of the youth identified as Danish Khazir son of Khazir Mohammad Bhat of Badam Bagh Sopore told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that he was called by Army to install CCTV cameras nearby an Army camp in Sopore town today afternoon.

    They said that Danish was working in a nearby complex outside the Army located near GDC Sopore and in the meanwhile some Army personnel from the camp came to him and took him away to install CCTV cameras for them near crossing.

    Meanwhile, family members and locals held a protest demonstration demanding action against the Army personnel.

    They alleged that as Danish got electrocuted, army personnel accompanying him left him there and fled from the spot.

    Soon after the incident, Danish was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where from he has been referred to Srinagar in a critical condition.

    Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Sopore, Shabir Nawab, while confirming the incident, told KNO that the youth is critically injured and has been taken to Srinagar hospital.

    He said FIR has been registered in this regard and further investigation is going on—(KNO)
