Facebook cracks down on fake ChatGPT apps scamming users

    [ad_1]

Washington: More than 10 bogus ChatGPT apps that were created to defraud users have been blocked by Facebook, the parent company of social media behemoth Meta, according to Mashable website.

The business has found that con artists are using the public’s interest with ChatGPT, an AI-based language model, to persuade people into downloading malicious software and browser add-ons.

By taking advantage of people’s faith in ChatGPT, the cybercriminals behind these fraudulent apps are launching attacks and compromising accounts all over the internet. Once a user downloads the malicious software, the attackers can keep developing new strategies to get around security measures.

    MS Education Academy

To counter this issue, Meta has identified and prevented the sharing of over 1,000 different malicious URLs on their apps. The business has also informed the file-sharing platforms where the malware was hosted about them so that they can take the necessary action as well, reported Mashable.

The prevalence of online fraud is making the internet more dangerous, and even social media behemoths like Meta are now alerting users to the risks of fake ChatGPT apps. Users must use caution and only download ChatGPT applications from reputable websites.

  • Google rolls out passkeys to sign in to apps, websites

Google rolls out passkeys to sign in to apps, websites

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Google on Wednesday announced it has started rolling out support for passkeys across Google accounts on all major platforms, marking the beginning of the end of the password.

The passkeys will be an additional option that people can use to sign in, alongside passwords, 2-Step Verification (2SV), etc.

“While passwords will be with us for some time to come, they are often frustrating to remember and put you at risk if they end up in the wrong hands,” said Christiaan Brand, Group Product Manager and Sriram Karra, Senior Product Manager at Google.

    MS Education Academy

According to the company, passkeys are a new way to sign in to apps and websites, easier to use and more secure than passwords.

“Passkeys let users sign in to apps and sites the same way they unlock their devices: with a fingerprint, a face scan or a screen lock PIN. And, unlike passwords, passkeys are resistant to online attacks like phishing, making them more secure than things like SMS one-time codes,” Google explained.

Services like Docusign, Kayak, PayPal, Shopify and Yahoo! Japan have already deployed passkeys to streamline sign-in for their users.

“Starting today, this will be available as an option for Google Account users who want to try a passwordless sign-in experience,” said the company.

For Google Workspace accounts, administrators will soon have the option to enable passkeys for their end-users during sign-in.

“The change to passkeys will take time. That’s why passwords and 2SV will still work for Google accounts,” said Google.

  • 14 Messaging Apps Blocked In JK

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Centre has blocked 14 messaging apps in Jammu and Kashmir region allegedly for spreading militancy. The decision was taken after gathering inputs from intelligence agencies.

The apps include Crypviser, Enigma, Safeswiss, Wickrme, Mediafire, Briar, BChat, Nandbox, Conion, IMO, Element, Second line, Zangi, Threema among others. These were allegedly used by militants in Kashmir to communicate with their supporters and on-ground workers, reported ANI.

“Agencies keep track of channels used by over ground workers (OGWs) and militants to communicate among themselves. While tracking down one of the communication, agencies found that the mobile application does not have representatives in India and it is difficult to track down activities happening on the app,” an official told ANI.

Following this, the Centre, with help from intelligence agencies, prepared the list of apps that do not follow Indian laws and pose a threat to national security.

The list was then forwarded to the concerned Ministry with a request seeking their ban under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The intelligence agencies informed that these apps are spreading propaganda in the Valley.

The move comes days after the Poonch attack which killed five Indian Army men. Following this, the Army had asked people to immediately report any suspicious activity and also to keep away from engaging in militant activities.

“The Central Govt and the army have been working together for the development of the area and people of this region so that they could be part of the mainstream of the country. Keeping this in mind, people of all the communities should walk shoulder to shoulder with the army,” it said in a statement here.

“Hence, the people of this area should keep away from such type of incident and activities in future, if someone is roaming suspected in the region, then the people of this area should immediately inform and assist the army and foil the major incident like Poonch,” the Army said, adding that people were equally responsible for the maintenance of peace in the region.

The army statement came a day after Director General of Police Dilbag Singh claimed they had uncovered the Poonch attack plot with the arrest of six locals for sheltering the militants before they carried out the attack, for which they used explosives and weapons delivered to them from Pakistan through drones.

  • Facebook, Twitter to face new EU content rules by August 25

Facebook, Twitter to face new EU content rules by August 25

    [ad_1]

    facebook

The world’s largest social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and others will have to crack down on illegal and harmful content or else face hefty fines under the European Union’s Digital Services Act from as early as August 25.

The European Commission today will designate 19 very large online platforms (VLOPs) and search engines that will fall under the scrutiny of the wide-ranging online content law. These firms will face strict requirements including swiftly removing illegal content, ensuring minors are not targeted with personalized ads and limiting the spread of disinformation and harmful content like cyberbullying.

“With great scale comes great responsibility,” said the EU’s Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton in a briefing with journalists. “As of August 25, in other words, exactly four months [from] now, online platforms and search engines with more than 45 million active users … will have stronger obligation.”

The designated companies with over 45 million users in the EU include:

    — Eight social media platforms, namely Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Snapchat;

    — Five online marketplaces, namely Amazon, Booking, AliExpres, Google Shopping and Zalando;

    — Other platforms, including Apple and Google’s app stores, Google Maps and Wikipedia, and search engines Google and Bing.

These large platforms will have to stop displaying ads to users based on sensitive data like religion and political opinions. AI-generated content like manipulated videos and photos, known as deepfakes, will have to be labeled.

Companies will also have to conduct yearly assessments of the risks their platforms pose on a range of issues like public health, kids’ safety and freedom of expression. They will be required to lay out their measures for how they are tackling such risks. The first assessment will have to be finalized on August 25.

“These 19 very large online platforms and search engines will have to redesign completely their systems to ensure a high level of privacy, security and safety of minors with age verification and parental control tools,” said Breton.

External firms will audit their plans. The enforcement team in the Commission will access their data and algorithms to check whether they are promoting a range of harmful content — for example, content endangering public health or during elections.

Fines can go up to 6 percent of their global annual turnover and very serious cases of infringement could result in platforms facing temporary bans.

Breton said one of the first tests for large platforms in Europe will be elections in Slovakia in September because of concerns around “hybrid warfare happening on social media, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine.”

“I am particularly concerned by the content moderation system or Facebook, which is a platform, playing an important role in the opinion building for example for the Slovak society,” said Breton. “Meta needs to carefully investigate its system and fix it, where needed, ASAP.”

The Commission will also go to Twitter in the U.S. at the end of June to check whether the company is ready to comply with the DSA. “At the invitation of Elon Musk, my team and I will carry out a stress test live at Twitter’s headquarters,” added Breton.

TikTok has also asked for the Commission to check whether it will be compliant but no date has been set yet.

The Commission is also in the process of designating “four to five” additional platforms “in the next few weeks.” Porn platforms like PornHub and YouPorn have said 33 million and 7 million Europeans visit their respective websites every month — meaning they wouldn’t have to face extra requirements to tackle risks they could pose to society.

  • Android malware infects 60 Google Play apps with 100 mn downloads

Android malware infects 60 Google Play apps with 100 mn downloads

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Google Play has been infiltrated by a new Android malware called ‘Goldoson’, which has been discovered in 60 legitimate apps with a combined total of 100 million downloads.

The malicious malware component is integrated into a third-party library that the developers inadvertently incorporated into all sixty apps, reports BleepingComputer.

The Android malware, discovered by McAfee’s research team, is capable of collecting a range of sensitive data, including information on the user’s installed apps, WiFi and Bluetooth-connected devices, and GPS locations.

    MS Education Academy

Additionally, it can perform ad fraud by clicking ads in the background without the user’s consent, according to the report.

When a user runs a Goldoson-containing app, the library registers the device and obtains its configuration from an obfuscated remote server.

The setup specifies the data-stealing and ad-clicking functions Goldoson should do on the infected device and how frequently.

Moreover, the report said that the data collection mechanism is commonly set to activate every two days, transmitting a list of installed apps, geographical position history, MAC addresses of devices connected via Bluetooth and WiFi, and other information to the C2 server.

The amount of data collected is determined by the permissions granted to the infected app during installation as well as the Android version.

Although Android 11 later are better protected against arbitrary data collection, researchers discovered that Goldoson had enough rights to acquire sensitive data in 10 per cent of the apps even in newer versions of the OS, the report mentioned.

Ad income is generated by loading HTML code and injecting it into a customised, hidden WebView, and then using that to execute numerous URL visits.

There is no indication of this action on the victim’s device.

In January, Google’s Threat Analysis Group terminated thousands of accounts associated with a group known as ‘Dragonbridge’ or ‘Spamouflage Dragon’ that disseminated pro-Chinese disinformation on various platforms.

According to the tech giant, Dragonbridge gets new Google Accounts from bulk account sellers, and at times they have even used accounts previously used by financially motivated actors repurposed for posting disinformation videos and blogs.

  • Technological Advancement in Apps: From Online Shopping to Betting, how is the Online Experience with Apps?

Technological Advancement in Apps: From Online Shopping to Betting, how is the Online Experience with Apps?

    [ad_1]

The 21st century is one of rapid technological development. In an incredibly short time, we went from brick phones to smartphones. And that is just a tiny sample of the incredible advancement that marks the 2000s.

One of the most notable developments involves the sphere of digital technology. The internet is now an omnipresent aspect of our lives. We can access the world wide web using any computer, smartphone, or other electronic device. Best of all, thanks to 5G and public Wi-Fi networks, we can do so from anywhere.

People download, purchase, and use mobile apps to pass the time, do some shopping, or even make a few spins at online casinos. In this environment, it is unsurprising that the mobile app market is thriving. In this article, we would like to explore how the app market has changed and talk a little about people’s experiences with apps.

    The Changing Markets

Some might find the number of markets touched by digital technology surprising. The internet has affected everything from advertisement to shopping to gambling and sports betting. People are far more likely to purchase their clothes, gadgets, or groceries online than go to the store. After all, shopping while commuting is much more convenient than taking the extra hour to visit a supermarket.

Similarly, gamblers and bettors are likelier to play or bet online. Thanks to the emergence of the iGaming industry, casino games and sports odds are much more prominent than ever before. And, of course, sports betting apps are incredibly well-known and popular among fans of sports and gambling. These websites cover all of the most beloved sports, from football to cricket and much more.

So, the question on our minds is this: how have apps influenced these industries and the world? Is their influence positive or negative? We attempt to answer these questions in this article and much more.

The Pros and Cons of Apps

Mobile apps have, without a doubt, significantly impacted society. If you own a smartphone, you use apps whether you want to or not. And since smartphones are pretty much omnipresent, there is no person in the world right now that isn’t affected by apps.

Since apps are a standard part of our society, the question is whether they are overall positive or negative. To answer that question, we will look at the pros and cons of apps and attempt to draw a conclusion.

    The Pros

One of the most apparent benefits of an app is convenience. Rather than searching the web, we only need to pull up an app that relates to what we need. In need of groceries? There is an app for that. Looking for music? Spotify and SoundCloud are there for you. Need to look up a film? The IMDb and Letterboxd apps have you covered. In the mood to spin a few reels? There are dozens of gambling apps out there. So, convenience is undoubtedly the biggest advantage that apps have to offer. However, it is not the only one.

    Apps Can Help with Art

Making music in 2023 is easier than ever. Aspiring musicians can purchase sound equipment for relatively cheap. You may not even need instruments, depending on the type of music you want. But what is incredible is that you can use certain apps to create beautiful melodies that will resonate with a crowd.

Music is one of many aspects of art that apps can help with. There are so many free and incredible apps detailing art history which can help aspiring artists get some context and inspiration. And all of this is available at your fingertips.

    Good for Business

Entrepreneurs and business owners can certainly benefit from apps. In the same way, businesses use websites for easily accessible information about their products, they now utilize apps to do the same. Through apps, businesses can improve customer service and communication, making accessing their products more effortless. On top of that, communication apps make interactions among employees much easier, improving productivity. And speaking of communication…

    Apps Have Improved Communication

Thanks to apps like Messenger, Viber, Skype, and Discord, people are in constant communication. Human beings are social animals, and our mental health and happiness depends on others. Thanks to communication apps, we can now talk to our friends and family, whether we are across the street, or across the ocean.

More importantly, these apps let us communicate with people from all over the world, leading to understanding of different cultures, and thus a more tolerant and progressive society. So, the benefit of these apps extends beyond simple communication.

    The Cons

There aren’t many negative aspects of using apps. However, there are some. The biggest disadvantage of having a phone filled with apps is that you rarely have a moment of peace. The constant notifications, pings, and reminders can undoubtedly get annoying. Some scientists have managed to link continuous exposure to messages to a decrease in concentration and focus. However, evidence for this is inconclusive.

Of course, we could ignore these constant annoyances or simply turn off the notification option. However, doing so leads to anxiety caused by the fear that you will miss out on something. The anxiety has been dubbed “fear of missing out” or FOMO, a serious issue that many young people in the 21st-century deal with. The root cause of FOMO seems to be the digital dependency of the current generation. Luckily, there are ways to combat the fear of missing out, including daily physical and mental exercises.

    Conclusion

The development of digital technology cannot be understated. In a comparatively short amount of time, we have come incredibly far. Our smartphones are basically miniature computers that we can carry in our pocket anywhere we go. And apps make our lives a lot easier. Even so, it is important to remember to look up from our smartphones once in a while, and experience the lives that these machines make a lot more convenient.

  • As delivery staff stress levels reach worrying highs, food delivery apps start acting

As delivery staff stress levels reach worrying highs, food delivery apps start acting

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Ajay (name changed), working as a delivery boy of a popular online-delivery platform, was rushing to deliver his order, but got stuck in peak-hour traffic and thus was late to deliver his order. He called up the customer to inform his situation.

Instead of being empathic, the customer called up his company to complain. Soon enough Ajay lost his job.

Hamid (name changed) accidentally pressed the doorbell of a house, he was abused. The list is endless.

In the world of instant delivery, every other day we hear stories where delivery boys are beaten, abused or assaulted. Often they have to traverse in the harsh sun, wind and rain; face longer hours of work and traffic snarls.

“There has been a consistent growth in consumer confidence for ordering online, steered by tech-led delivery networks. This, in turn, has unlocked the long-term potential of ready-to-eat food delivery,” Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS.

“For food delivery startups seeking to attain sustainable and long-term market leadership, this market opportunity requires them to deliver not just on the instantaneous consumer delight, but rather the employee experience as well,” he added.

Owing to their tough workstyle, delivery boys often face a lot of stress, which can affect their mental health.

“Uncertainties of day to day life, life risks, long time periods, financial stress. It certainly impacts mental health. As a result they may engage in unhealthy coping mechanisms like consuming substances or other desperate measures to manage stress,” Mimansa Singh Tanwar, Clinical Psychologist, at Fortis Hospital, told IANS.

“To maintain positive mental health for them, it is important to improve the manager employee relationship where they practise values of empathy, integrity, gratitude and positive encouragement towards them,” she added.

Tanwar suggested that the delivery boys should be incorporated in the employee wellness programmes, and since there is also a connection between money and mental health, financial aids should also be there to support them.

Delivery boys should “focus on what they can control and engage in healthy stress mechanisms like building good support systems through positive family and peer relationships, and avoid engaging in unhealthy consumption of substances,” she noted.

In the movie ‘Zwigato’, helmed by Nandita Das, ace comedian and actor Kapil Sharma plays the role of a delivery boy, and showcases their struggles. Kapil shared that the character made him realise how tough life is for delivery boys, and that he has become more empathetic towards them.

“This movie made me realise the challenges that delivery boys face on a daily basis, and I have learned to appreciate their hard work and dedication even more. I am not saying tip them, but I am just saying that we can at least say a thank you with respect and that will make them happy,” Kapil said.

Meanwhile, several food companies have started several initiatives for its workers. Food delivery platform Zomato recently launched ‘the Shelter Project’ under which the company has set up public resting points where delivery persons can take a break from their exhausting routine and use amenities like the washroom, internet, and phone-charging stations.

In August 2020, Zomato also introduced period leaves of 10 days in a year for its women employees (including transgender people).

Swiggy has rolled out ambulance service for delivery executives and their dependents in the case of emergencies.

New Delhi: Meta (formerly Facebook) on Monday said that it has continued to see a strong trend towards women entrepreneurs using its apps in India over the last three years.

About 73 per cent of Instagram business accounts that self-identify as a women-owned business were set up in the last three years in India, the company revealed.

In addition, 53 per cent of all business pages on Facebook with female admins were also set up in the last three years in the country.

“It’s heartening to see more women kickstart their entrepreneurial journeys with the help of digital technologies, and we’re humbled that we play a part in this journey,” Archana Vohra, Director, Small and Medium Business for Meta in India, said in a statement.
