Tough action to be taken on ‘vulgarity’ on OTT: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: Taking a tough stand on complaints against content on OTT platforms, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said vulgarity and abusive language was not acceptable in the name of creativity.

Addressing a press conference here, Thakur said the government had taken a serious view on complaints of vulgarity and abusive language in content on OTT platforms and will not hesitate to take tough action to stop this trend.

“These platforms were given freedom for creativity and not for obscenity and when one crosses the limit, then hurling abuses in the name of creativity cannot be accepted at all,” Thakur said.

“If there is a need to change the rules, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will not hesitate. It will take tough action to stop vulgarity and abusive language,” the minister said.

In January, Thakur had batted for creative autonomy and said adequate safeguards were in place to monitor content on OTT platforms.

“Creativity should not be reined in, it should have autonomy. But it should not be too much that anything can be shown. We have kept adequate provisions and till date they are working fine,” Thakur had said on January 15 while participating in the 75th anniversary celebrations of ‘Panchajanya’ weekly, the RSS mouthpiece.

On Sunday, Thakur said there was a three-stage mechanism to deal with content on OTT platforms.

“As per the current procedure, producers have to address complaints about the content first and then they go to their association. When a complaint reaches the government (I&B department), strict action is taken as per rules,” he said.

Rahul should share information if he is really serious about women’s issues: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: Union minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should share information if he is really serious about women’s issues.

Thakur’s remarks came on a day Delhi Police queried Rahul Gandhi at his residence over his remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra that “women are still being sexually assaulted”.

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur city in Maharashtra, Thakur wondered if Rahul Gandhi was trying to hide something.

“It has become a habit of some people to remain in limelight by saying anything. But, they don’t understand the seriousness of the subject. If Rahulji is really serious about women’s issues, then he should give the information. What is he hiding?… Was it a lie then or is he lying now, only he can tell,” the Information and Broadcasting Minister said.

Queried on growing obscenity and the use of abusive language on OTT platforms and regulation of content, the minister said such complaints have increased a lot recently.

“As per the current procedure, producers have to address complaints about the content first and then they go to their association. When a complaint reaches the government (I&B department), strict action is taken as per rules,” he said.

Thakur said such complaints of (obscenity on OTT platforms) have increased and the department is taking them seriously.

“If we have to do any changes, we will think about it seriously. Because freedom was given for creativity and not for vulgarity or foul language. Abusive words and wrong things won’t be accepted in the name of creativity,” he added.

When asked if the Indian cricket team will travel to Pakistan if Asia Cup is held in that country, Thakur, who also holds the Sports portfolio, said, “Let BCCI decide first. When the time comes, the Indian government will decide”.

Congress, JD(S) used Karnataka as ATMs: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

Kolar: Union Minister Anurag Thakur Sunday alleged that the Congress and JD(U) used Karnataka as an ATM to fund their leaders.

Thakur, on the campaign trail in the state where the Assembly election is slated to be held in a couple of months, accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of “spreading lies” about the “closure” of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

He asserted that the BJP government ensured the state-run unit emerged as the country’s biggest helicopter manufacturing unit.

The BJP leader undertook a roadshow in Kolar and addressed a meeting of the party’s SC and ST Morchas in Bengaluru.

“When there was a Congress government in Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi used the state as an ATM. The money went from here. Under the JD(S)-led government, the state had become an ATM for one family,” Thakur alleged.

He also accused Rahul Gandhi of “maligning” India on foreign soil. “These are the same people because of whom a part of Kashmir is occupied by Pakistan,” Thakur said.

He said Karnataka had benefited from the “double-engine” government as Prime Minster Narendra Modi ensured that Karnataka received funds for development works. “Modi sent money to Karnataka and not the other way round.”

Thakur claimed that under Congress rule, Rs 6,000 crore was spent for building roads and highways in Karnataka, but under Modi’s leadership, Rs 50,000 crore was spent for the purpose in five years.

  • Anurag Thakur questions BBC’s journalistic independence

Anurag Thakur questions BBC’s journalistic independence

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday questioned the journalistic independence of the BBC after the media house suspended a former footballer and star anchor for his remarks on social media and reportedly took a documentary off air.

Thakur took a swipe at the UK-based public broadcaster while sharing two news reports on the BBC suspending former England captain and star sports anchor Gary Lineker after he criticised the UK government’s immigration policy and taking off air a documentary by David Attenborough “over fearing of right-wing backlash”.

“Interesting to see how the BBC which makes lofty claims about journalistic objectivity and independence suspends their star anchor over his social media activity,” the Union minister said on Twitter.

“In yet another interesting exhibit, BBC suspends airing of a documentary it shot over fears that it would anger a section of society,” he said.

“Fake narrative setting and ethical journalism are inherently contradictory. Those indulging in malicious propaganda forged in concocted facts can obviously never be expected to have the moral fibre or the courage to stand up for journalistic independence,”Thakur said.

The government had, in January, banned the BBC documentary ‘The Modi Question’ on the 2002 Gujarat riots and termed it as a propaganda piece.

The BBC has stood by the documentary, calling it “rigorously researched according to highest editorial standards”.

Last month, the income tax Department conducted a survey at the BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai to investigate a charge of “deliberate non-compliance with Indian laws including transfer pricing rules and diversion of profits illegally”.

The BJP had launched a scathing attack on the BBC, calling it the “most corrupt” and accusing it of unleashing “venomous” propaganda against India.

On Saturday, the BBC denied the report that it decided not to broadcast an episode narrated by world-famous conservationist Sir David Attenborough for a new wildlife series over fears of a right-wing backlash.

“This is totally inaccurate, there is no sixth episode’. Wild Isles’ is and always was a five-part series and does not shy away from environmental content,” a BBC statement said.

The broadcaster is also reeling under a controversy over football legend Gary Lineker.

Several of the BBC’s regular sports presenters have stepped back in solidarity with Lineker after he was suspended over a controversial tweet related to the government’s immigration policy.

  • Sole Motive Of NYT To Spread Propaganda: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Anurag Thakur, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, alleged on Friday that The New York Times was disseminating falsehoods about India. He characterized an opinion article published by the newspaper on press freedom in Kashmir as deceptive and imaginary.

“New York Times had long back dropped all pretensions of neutrality while publishing anything about India. NYT‘s so-called opinion piece on freedom of press in Kashmir is mischievous and fictitious, published with a sole motive to spread a propaganda about India and its democratic institutions and values,” Thakur remarked on Twitter.

“This is in continuation with what NYT and a few other link-minded foreign media have been spreading lies about India and our democratically elected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Such lies can’t last long,” the minister added

Thakur’s  rebuttal was prompted by the publication of an opinion piece in a US-based newspaper, which made allegations about restrictions on the free flow of information in Kashmir.

“Some foreign media nourishing a grudge against India and our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi have long been systematically trying to peddle lies about our democracy and pluralistic society,” Thakur said. He said freedom of press in India is as sacrosanct as other fundamental rights.

“Democracy in India and We the people are very mature and we don’t need to learn grammar of democracy from such agenda-driven media,” he said.

“Indians will not allow such mindsets to run their decisive agenda on India soil,” the minister said.

  • Efforts afoot to have built-in satellite tuners in TV sets: Anurag Thakur

Efforts afoot to have built-in satellite tuners in TV sets: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Monday said efforts are afoot to have a built-in satellite tuner in television sets to offer access to over 200 channels, a move that would allow viewers to watch programmes without set-top boxes.

Television sets with built-in satellite tuners would enable reception of free-to-air television and radio channels by mounting a small antenna at a suitable place such as at the rooftop or side wall of a building.

Addressing the media here, Thakur said there has been a humongous expansion of general entertainment channels on Doordarshan’s Free Dish, which has helped attract crores of viewers.

“I have made a new beginning in my department. If your television has a built-in satellite tuner, then there will be no need to have a separate set-top box. One can have access to more than 200 channels at the click of the remote,” he said while responding to a question.

The minister, however, made it clear that the decision in this matter is yet to be taken.

Doordarshan is in the process of phasing out analog transmission, and free-to-air channels will continue to be broadcast using digital satellite transmission.

In December last year, Thakur had written to Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to issue directions to television manufacturers to adopt the standards issued by the Bureau of Industrial Standards for built-in satellite tuners.

At present, television viewers need to purchase a set-top box for viewing various paid and free channels.

A viewer is required to use a set-top box even for the reception of free-to-air channels (non-encrypted) transmitted by Doordarshan.

The number of households having Doordarshan Free Dish have more than doubled since 2015.

A KPMG report had pegged Free Dish users at 20 million in 2015. The number had increased to 43 million in 2021.

Thakur said according to the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, SWAYAM Prabha channels were started for classes 1 to 12 in record time during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that the poor and those staying in rural areas had access to education.

“Today there are about 55 such channels and state governments are starting their own channels separately. Apart from news channels, there has been tremendous expansion of general entertainment channels on Free Dish,” he added.

  • Jailed For Raising National Flag In Kashmir Once: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Asserting that there is no restriction in Kashmir to hoist the national flag after the abrogation of Article 370, Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Tuesday said that he was once jailed for raising the national flag in the Union Territory.

“I was longest serving BJP Youth Wing President, from 2010 to 2017. I took a yatra from Kolkata to Kashmir to hoist the national flag. I was put in jail to hoist the national flag in Jammu and Kashmir. Today, I see Jammu and Kashmir is a different state with no such restrictions,” Thakur said while speaking at the first Y20 meeting under G20 India at IIT Guwahati.

The minister further said that after August 2019, when the article was ruled out by the Central government there are no such restrictions in the territory.

“In Jammu and Kashmir, it was difficult to even hoist the national flag. But after the abrogation of Article 370, you could see last year during the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ program, there was a Tiranga hoisted on each and every house in Kashmir,” Thakur said.
