Cattle smuggling: Delhi court sends Anubrata Mondal’s daughter to judicial custody

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Sunday sent TMC leader Anubrata Mondal’s daughter Sukanya Mondal to judicial custody till May 12 in a money laundering case related to alleged cattle smuggling at the India-Bangladesh border.
The judge sent Sukanya to jail after she was produced before the court on expiry of her three-day custodial interrogation.
ED’s Special Public Prosecutor Nitesh Rana told the court that the accused was not required for further investigation.

A primary school teacher in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, Sukanya Mondal was arrested on April 26 by the ED after questioning.
Her father is already in judicial custody in connection with the case.
The ED has filed two charge sheets in the cattle smuggling case till now and has attached assets worth a total of Rs 20.25 crore.

Cattle smuggling: CBI summons Anubrata Mondal’s confidant Abdul Latif

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned Abdul Latif, a close confidant of Trinamool Congress strongman Anubrata Mondal, for questioning in connection with the alleged multi-crore cattle smuggling scam in West Bengal.
Latif, who is currently out on interim bail, has been asked to be present at the office of CBI’s Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) in Kolkata on Tuesday (May 2), sources said.
It is learnt that Latif has been summoned for questioning regarding his alleged connection with a cattle-trading hub at Illambazar in Birbhum district, which is perceived to be the epicentre of the cattle smuggling case.

Latif has been named in the CBI charge sheet in this connection. Officially, Latif has multiple business interests including marble showroom, poultry farm, car showroom, petrol pump and hotel business, among others.
Soon after the CBI took over the investigation, Latif had gone absconding. Earlier this week, he surrendered before a special CBI court in Asansol, where the matter relating to the alleged cattle-smuggling scam is being heard, and secured an interim bail till May 6.
Recently, Latif’s name had also surfaced in the killing of coal trader and BJP leader Raju Jha, who was shot dead in East Burdwan district on April 1.
Jha was travelling along with his associate Brotin Bandopadhyay in a Toyota SUV registered in Latif’s name.

Cattle smuggling: TMC leader Anubrata Mandal sent to ED custody till March 10

Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday sent TMC leader Anubrata Mondal to ED custody till March 10 in an alleged money laundering case related to West Bengal cattle smuggling case.
The midnight court passed the order on a plea moved by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which sought his 14-day custody and said the accused was required to be quizzed.
Special Judge Rakesh Kumar directed the agency, represented by Special Public Prosecutor Nitesh Rana, to produce the accused on March 10 before the regular court.
The ED on Tuesday got custody of arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mondal after doctors at Joka-ESI Hospital in West Bengal found him fit to travel to New Delhi.
ED officials took Mondal straightaway to the city airport under tight security of central forces to catch a flight to the national capital, the agency said.
Mondal, the TMC’s Birbhum district president and a close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was earlier arrested by the CBI in connection with the related corruption case.

Cattle scam: Calcutta HC clears decks for ED to take Anubrata Mondal to Delhi

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Saturday cleared the decks for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to take Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal to Delhi in connection with the multi-crore cattle smuggling scam in West Bengal.
The single-judge bench of Justice Bibek Chaudhuri said a fine of Rs 1,00,000 was also imposed as a penalty on Mondal for keeping the multiple court option open in the matter by filing the same petition at both Calcutta High Court and Delhi High Court by suppressing information in both these courts.
On Saturday, Mondal’s counsel told the court that his client should not be taken to Delhi considering his health.
In reply, the ED counsel said that in that case, Mondal will be taken to the national capital through a flight and also get him treated at the AIIMS there.
After hearing both sides, Justice Chaudhuri permitted the ED to take Mondal to Delhi on a flight.
But before taking him to Delhi, as per the order, Mondal has to be examined at a central hospital and a certificate declaring him fit for travel has to be issued by that central hospital before taking him to Delhi.
On Saturday, the ED counsel specially stressed on Mondal’s attempts to keep the multiple court options open in the matter.
“Is it not because of a backup in case the verdict of a particular court does not go in favour of him, in this case he filed the same petition at Calcutta High Court and Delhi High Court. On Friday, his counsel informed the Delhi court that his client will withdraw the petition made by him on this count at Delhi High Court. Anubrata Mondal lacks all ethical values. He deserves a huge financial penalty for that,” the ED counsel said.
