BJP slams Cong for appointing ‘anti-national’ Imran Pratapgarhi as star campaigner

Bengaluru: Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje on Thursday took strong exception to the inclusion of Rajya Sabha member Imran Pratapgarhi in the list of 40 star campaigners of the Congress for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections, calling him an “anti-national”.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and BJP’s Karnataka Election Management Committee Convener also sought to know the “connection” between Congress and slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed, who was recently shot dead in Uttar Pradesh.

“The person who should have been arrested for standing in support of Atiq, has become the star campaigner. What is the relation between Atiq Ahmed and Congress?” the minister sought to know.

She alleged that Pratapgarhi is a close friend of Ahmed and used to call the latter as his “guru” and brother. The MP used to write poetry in praise of Ahmed, who used to take part in ‘mushairas’ (a gathering at which Urdu poetry is read), Karandlaje said.

“Despite knowing that Imran Pratapgarhi was involved in ‘anti-national activities’, you (Congress) send him to the Rajya Sabha and appoint him as Karnataka’s star campaigner,” she said, lashing out at the opposition party, which released its list of star campaigners on Wednesday.

The ruling BJP is fighting the Assembly polls against its principal rival Congress while the JD(S) is also an important player in the state.

Karnataka will vote in a single phase on May 10 and the results are scheduled to be out on May 13.

  • Anti-national powers against quality education for Dalits sent Sisodia to jail: Kejriwal

Anti-national powers against quality education for Dalits sent Sisodia to jail: Kejriwal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said some “anti-national” people in the country sent Manish Sisodia to jail because they do not want quality education for Dalit and underprivileged children.

Kejriwal also said he holds B R Ambedkar in higher regard than Mahatma Gandhi because of his unshakable resolve in the face of adversities in pursuit of education.

Addressing an event to mark Ambedkar Jayanti here, Kejriwal said Ambedkar dreamt of quality education for all in government schools, but “these people ruined government schools in the last 75 years and private schools mushroomed in the country”.

    MS Education Academy

“God sent a man named Manish Sisodia to correct this wrong. He would go on a round of Delhi schools starting at 6 am. He turned things around within five years. We can say Amdekar’s dream is being realized in Delhi.

“But some anti-national powers don’t want the country to progress. Who are these people who do not want Dalit students to get good education. All these people together sent Sisodia to jail. These people are enemies of the country,” he alleged.

He added that those who dared to revolutionize the education sector in the past were imprisoned by autocrats.

Kejriwal said some people also got the Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana stalled but he will get the scheme resumed in a month.

Free coaching is given to underprivileged students under the scheme.

The Delhi CM said India gave birth to many great personalities but “Ambedkar was the brightest of them all”.

“We decided to keep photos of Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh in all government offices. Many people said I forgot Gandhiji. No, I did not. I respect Gandhiji a lot. He fought for the country, made sacrifices, he was a great personality but I respect Ambedkar more.

“Ambedkar was born in a very poor family. He faced a lot of trouble in school, but he didn’t stop studying. He went on to study at Columbia University in the US in 1913. You have the internet today. You can search on google. You know about Columbia University. How did he get to know about the university in that era? This perplexes me. This is nothing but magic,” he said.

  • JNU’s image as anti-national university has changed in past one year: VC Pandit

JNU’s image as anti-national university has changed in past one year: VC Pandit

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: JNU’s image as an “anti-national university” has changed in the past one year as the university’s community has shown it is a “nationalistic, creative and inclusive” institution, Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit said on Tuesday.

Over the year, some students have been accused of making anti-India statements and being involved in communal riots, and the university was branded “anti-national”, she said.

But, now the Jawaharlal Nehru University is back to academic innovation and research excellence, Santishree, who completed one year as JNU VC on Tuesday, said.

“The varsity’s image as an anti-national institution has changed. This year, the JNU community has shown that it is nationalistic, creative and inclusive. Academic leadership matters for my team and faculty,” she told PTI in an interview.

Santishree summed up her journey so far as the first female vice-chancellor as “very satisfying”.

In 2016, three JNU students were arrested on charges of sedition. Later, JNU student Sharjeel Imam and several others, including Umar Khalid, were booked under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly being the “masterminds” of the February 2020 riots in the North-East Delhi.

Listing out her work in the past one year, the vice chancellor said the varsity effected 32 recruitments and 44 overdue promotions.

The number of women chairpersons and dean has gone up from 19 to 39, she said.

When asked what are the challenges the JNU is facing at the moment, Sanstishree said the university is struggling to synchronise the academic calendar which was disrupted since early 202 due to Covid; the completion of Ph.D submissions delayed due to the pandemic; and the modernisation of the campus infrastructure.

“We are also working in the direction of expansion of the implementation of NEP (New Education Policy) 2020 through more MA programmes in different Schools, and increasing the University-Corpus fund from ?50 Crores to ?250 Crores,” she said.

Born on 15 July 1962 in Leningrad, Russia, Santishree was educated in Chennai at the Presidency College, both B.A. and M.A. Topper and Gold Medallist. She completed her M.Phil and PhD in International Politics from the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New-Delhi; Post-Doctorate in Peace and Conflict Studies from Uppsala University, Sweden.

She was appointed as the first woman and alumnus Vice Chancellor of India’s top University last year.

She has published four books and edited two. Her teaching and research career spanning over three-and-a-half decades beginning with a lecturer at Goa University in 1988 and in 1991 joining the University of Pune, now Savitribai Phule Pune University.

She is also a member of several national academic and research bodies since 2015.
