Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin announced Wednesday that she is running for a third term as Democrats look to hold onto control of their slim Senate majority.

“I’m committed to making sure that working people, not just the big corporations and ultra-wealthy, have a fighter on their side. With so much at stake, from families struggling with rising costs to a ban on reproductive freedom, Wisconsinites need someone who can fight and win,” Baldwin said in a statement.

Baldwin’s reference to reproductive freedom in the state comes as liberals flipped the ideological makeup of Wisconsin’s Supreme Court earlier this month. The new 4-3 majority is much more likely to strike down a controversial 19th-century abortion ban in the state.

Other likely but undeclared GOP candidates include Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former national security adviser John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. With so many big names potentially running, fellow GOP senators have said it could be tough for Scott to compete.

Throughout the video, which stretched just over three minutes, Scott repeatedly took aim at President Joe Biden and Democrats, vowing to stand up to China and secure the borders, give parents a choice in their childrens’ education and protect religious liberty.

“If the radical left gets their way, millions more families will be trapped in failing schools, crime ridden neighborhoods and crushing inflation. Not on my watch,” Scott said amid a backdrop of cannons at Fort Sumter, a former military post in South Carolina that is considered to be where the Civil War began.

Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, also slammed the left for fostering a “culture of grievance” and “victimhood,” and argued that he has the necessary perspective to push back. He leaned into his evangelical roots and highlighted his childhood with a single mom who overcame poverty through determination.

“All too often when they [Democrats] get called out for their failures, they weaponize race to divide us, to hold onto their power,” he said in the video. “When I fought back against their liberal agenda, they called me a prop. A token. Because I disrupt their narrative. I threaten their control. They know the truth of my life disproves their lies.”

Coming off of his “Faith in America” tour, Scott told Fox News he found that people are “starving for hope, starving for an optimistic, positive message anchored in conservative values.”

After his announcement, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison lambasted a presidential run by Scott, focusing on his support for Trump’s presidency and opposition to abortion.

“I’m glad they are afraid of me,” the South Carolina senator responded.

When pressed on what his strategy to beat Trump in the race would be, Scott reiterated his upbringing and the challenges he has overcome — not mentioning the former president. He was then asked if his tactic would be to tell his personal story, in hopes that voters would resonate.

“What I’m saying in response to your question is that the field of play is focusing on President Biden’s failures,” he said, again without mentioning Trump by name.

  • Steven Fulop announces candidacy for New Jersey governor — an election more than two years away

Steven Fulop announces candidacy for New Jersey governor — an election more than two years away

    [ad_1]

“I’m launching my campaign now because I believe that New Jersey can become an even better place for all of us, and I will be sharing my vision over the coming months for how we will make it happen,” he added. “I’ve never backed down from a fight before, and I’m ready to work hard for all the people of our great state to deliver the results New Jersey deserves.”

An accompanying announcement video opens with images of the World Trade Center attack on 9/11 and recounts how Fulop left his job as an analyst for Goldman Sachs to join the Marines, and it includes interviews with several veterans Fulop served with. It then highlights his policies in Jersey City, like paid sick leave requirements for many businesses and a $15 minimum wage for city workers.

Jersey City, which is directly across the Hudson River from Manhattan, has seen a huge development boom under Fulop. Fulop boasted of helping attract major developments more inland from the city’s waterfront, which has seen periodic post-industrial building booms since the 1980s.

In his State of the City speech last month, Fulop highlighted the city’s efforts to make healthy food available in poor neighborhoods, a city program to resettle refugees, and deals that require developers to include affordable housing units in their projects. He’s also presided over an expansion of bike lanes.

Fulop’s candidacy itself is far from a surprise. He announced he would not seek reelection as mayor in January in what was widely viewed as a pre-gubernatorial announcement.

But it is a surprise that he announced his candidacy two years before the Democratic primary. Prospective candidates often hold off on formally announcing their candidacies because, if they accept public financing as most do, they’re be limited to $7.3 million ahead of the primary. However, a super PAC that’s run by his wife’s business partner called Coalition for Progress, which is all but officially considered Fulop’s, has $6.2 million in the bank.

Fulop spokesperson Phil Swibinski said that he does plan to pursue public financing.

Fulop, who grew up in Edison and whose parents owned a deli in Newark, was on the precipice of running for governor in 2017. He traveled the state to meet with power brokers, but suddenly backed off in the fall of 2016 to endorse Murphy, who will not be able to seek reelection due to term limits.

Fulop had been considered a top-tier candidate, and his sudden withdrawal from the race alienated and mystified some political allies at the time while boxing out then-Senate President Steve Sweeney, who was also expected to run.

Other frequently-mentioned potential Democratic candidates for governor in 2025 include Sweeney, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill and U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer.

Former 2021 gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli has also said he intends to run again, though he’s likely to face other Republicans for the nomination.

Fulop’s political career began as a no-hope candidate for Congress in the Democratic primary against then-U.S. Rep. Bob Menendez, who at the time was feuding with then-Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham, who recruited Fulop. Though Fulop lost that race badly, he shocked the city’s political establishment in 2005 by winning a council seat in the city’s quickly-gentrifying Ward E.

Fulop became a critic of the city’s Democratic machine, annoying then-Mayor Jerramiah Healy and gaining some prominence as a critic of Hudson County’s all-too-frequent corruption scandals. But after defeating Healy in 2013, Fulop took the reins of the political machine and became the target of critics who questioned his ethics.

Coalition for Progress, which was founded ahead of Fulop’s expected 2017 gubernatorial run, faced several complaints from ethics watchdog groups over a $1 million donation it received from a Delaware trust that appeared designed to hide the donor’s identity. The trust was formed on December 23, 2015 and made the donation the following day.

Seven months later, in an amended campaign finance report, the super PAC revealed the donor to be Vivek Garipalli, then the owner of the for-profit hospital chain CarePoint Health, which owns a hospital in Jersey City that Fulop once recommended for an ambulance contract.

In 2014, Fulop’s then-chief of staff, Muhammed Akil, was caught on tape in what sounded like an effort to try to steer a city energy consulting contract to a specific company, circumventing a public bidding process.

“What I don’t like about this, see, f—ing straight up this is the kind of s— where motherf—ers go to jail,” Akil said on the recording, which POLITICO obtained in 2017. Fulop heard the recording, according to a deposition, but Akil remained his chief of staff for nearly a year after and even after it became public, Fulop did not completely cut ties with Akil.

Fulop’s future opponents will likely raise some of those controversies, but so far they’re not commenting.

“OK,” Sweeney, who frequently butted heads with Fulop in the lead-up to the 2017 gubernatorial election, said in a phone interview when asked about Fulop’s candidacy. “That’s not really a shock, is it?

Virginia Rep. Wexton announces Parkinson’s diagnosis

    [ad_1]

    image

While the disease has caused impairments, the Virginia Democrat emphasized that Parkinson’s isn’t a “death sentence” and that she’s working with a doctor to address the symptoms.

“I want to use that platform to be a voice for those struggling with Parkinson’s to help bring better resources to the search for a cure,” she said Tuesday, announcing the diagnosis on National Parkinson’s Day. Some 500,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, but the actual number is expected to be much higher.

In recent weeks, Wexton has focused on her duties in Congress while also traveling around her district, hosting events with constituents and visiting local businesses and schools. She plans to continue such outings as she works with the doctor on a suitable treatment plan.

“I hope to keep serving you for many years to come,” she said.

Wexton previously worked as a domestic violence prosecutor and substitute judge before becoming a state senator, a position she held for five years. She won the post in Virginia’s 10th congressional district in 2018, flipping her district blue.

That year, she gained national attention for leading a symbolic vote on a resolution that condemned future government shutdowns, targeting Republicans ahead of another shutdown battle. She also applauded the removal of the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee inside the U.S. Capitol in 2020, calling it a “historic and long-overdue moment.”

White House announces increased sanctions to combat fentanyl trafficking

    220207 opioids ap 773

Washington will build a global coalition to combat the illicit synthetic drug trade, the statement said, in an effort to “develop solutions, drive national actions, and create synergies and leverage among like-minded countries.”

The sanctions come as Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and members of his security cabinet plan to meet with U.S. officials this week about fentanyl and arms trafficking.

President Joe Biden’s push to counter drug traffickers also coincides with numerous lawmakers’ critiques that his administration has not done enough to stem the tide of drugs flowing from Mexico. As tensions with the southern neighbor rise, prominent Republicans have even called for bombing drug cartels in Mexico to solve the problem.

Former President Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term in the White House, has floated the idea of sending “special forces” and using “cyber warfare” to target cartel leaders. Reps. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) and Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) introduced a bill seeking authorization for the use of military force to “put us at war with the cartels.” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said he’s open to sending U.S. troops into Mexico to target drug lords — even without Mexico City’s permission.

“We need to start thinking about these groups more like ISIS than we do the mafia,” Waltz told POLITICO.

In addition, non-residents who earn income from UAE sources only and do not have a permanent establishment in the UAE are exempt from registering for corporate tax.

Other exemptions are available for organizations such as pension or investment funds and public benefit organizations.

The decision is in line with international best practices, as people are exempted from corporate tax such as the federal government, government departments and agencies in the UAE, public institutions and other categories.

As long as these entities continue to meet the exemption conditions specified in the relevant articles of the Decree-Law, there is no need to register with the Federal Tax Authority.
