Security beefed up after SKM announces nationwide protests in support of wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Security was beefed up at Jantar Mantar in the national capital on Sunday after Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) announced that it will hold nationwide protests including in Delhi in support of the protesting grapplers.

Wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar for over 10 days demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh and his sacking from the post in the light of allegations of sexual harassment by the wrestlers.

According to an SKM statement on Saturday, on May 7, several leaders of the organisation from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will visit the protest site at Jantar Mantar and extend support to the protesting wrestlers.

    MS Education Academy

Notably, SKM had spearheaded the year-long farmers’ protest on the borders of the national capital against the now-repealed farm laws.

On Friday, Haryana Home and Health Minister Anil Vij extended his support to the protesting wrestlers near Jantar Mantar.

Speaking to ANI, the Haryana Home minister said he had complete sympathy and support for the protesting wrestlers.

He even assured the grapplers that he was willing to mediate and hold talks with the government on their behalf.

“This entire matter is now being addressed at the highest level. Since I have also been a sports minister, my sympathies and support are with the protesting wrestlers. If they want me to meditate and talk to the government, I am willing to do so,” Vij said.

Moreover, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday said the Delhi Police was conducting an unbiased investigation against the wrestling federation chief and were working to meet the demands of the protesting grapplers.

“A demand had been put forward to form a committee and a panel was constituted. Two FIRs have also been registered by Delhi Police and Supreme Court also gave its verdict. Delhi Police is conducting a fair investigation,” the Union Minister said.

The Union Minister said that free and fair elections of the Wrestling Federation of India have been taken into consideration and that the Indian Olympic Association is working towards it.

On Wednesday, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha met the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar.

On April 23, Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshee Mallik returned to the protest site at Jantar Mantar, claiming that six women wrestlers, and a minor, filed a sexual harassment complaint against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Connaught Place Police Station but Delhi Police did not register an FIR. The protesting grapplers also demanded that the Sports Ministry make the findings of the Oversight Committee public.

Delhi Police filed two FIRs on April 28 following the notice by the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year, prominent wrestlers came forward to lead a protest against the WFI chief, following which the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the formation of an ‘oversight committee’ to probe allegations against the WFI, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and some coaches.

The protesting wrestlers have made it clear that they won’t move until they get justice and Brij Bhushan is removed as the WFI chief and put behind bars.

‘Exposes love jihad..’: ‘The Kerala Story’ made tax-free in MP, announces Chouhan

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday announced to give tax-free status to ‘The Kerala Story’ in the state, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi credited the movie for bringing out terror conspiracies and used it to attack the Congress during a rally in Karnataka.

“We have already made a law against religious conversion in Madhya Pradesh. Since this film creates awareness, everyone should watch this film. Parents, children and daughters should watch it. That’s why the Madhya Pradesh government is giving tax-free status to the movie The Kerala Story’,” Chouhan said.

The CM said that the film exposes the conspiracies of love jihad’, religious conversion and terrorism and its “hideous” face.

    MS Education Academy

Love jihad’ is a term often used by right-wing activists to allege a ploy by Muslim men to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage.

This film tells how the daughters ruin their lives after getting entangled in the web of love jihad’ due to momentary sentimentality, said Chouhan and added, “This film also exposes the design of terrorism.”

In a rally in Ballari in poll-bound Karnataka, PM Modi said on Friday, “Such a beautiful state of the country, where people are hardworking and talented. The Kerala Story’ film brings out terror conspiracies happening in that state.”

“It is unfortunate that Congress can be seen standing with this terror trend that is seeking to ruin the country. Congress is even indulging in backdoor political bargaining with people having terror inclinations. People of Karnataka should be cautious about Congress,” added Modi.

Karnataka votes for a new assembly on May 10. The results will be announced on May 13.

Khattar announces bus service to Haryana village after elderly woman complains

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s visit on Wednesday to Thana in Kurukshetra has ensured that government buses now won’t skip the stop at the village.

During an interaction with Thana villagers as part of the ‘Jan Samvad’ programme, an elderly woman complained about buses not stopping there and Khattar took action, according to a government statement.

From now, Khattar said, at least eight buses from Pehowa and Kurukshetra depots would stop in the village and for the convenience of the villagers, the timings of the buses will be mentioned at bus stops.

    MS Education Academy

The chief minister directed the Haryana Roadways general manager, Kurukshetra, to prepare a 12-hour route chart for the buses, and instruct the drivers and conductors to stop the buses on the fixed routes of Thana.

During ‘Jan Samvad’, two village residents told the chief minister that they were charged Rs 20,000-Rs 25,000 for treatment at private hospitals despite being covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

On this, Khattar ordered the civil surgeon, Kurukshetra to investigate the entire matter and take appropriate action.

Pehowa MLA and Minister of State for Printing and Stationery Sandeep Singh also attended the ‘Jan Samvad’ programme.

Interacting with people in Kurukshetra’s Barna village, Khattar said sarpanches must hold meetings of the Gram Sabha once in three months.

Khattar said the ‘Jan Samvad’ programme is the best medium to take feedback from the public and see if the benefits of government policies and schemes are reaching the people.

He also met members of self-help groups (SHGs) in the village.

There are nearly 30 SHGs in Barna.

In Kurukshetra’s Karah Sahib village, the chief minister said public welfare policies will be framed on the basis of suggestions received through ‘Jan Samvad’.

The new policies will be in accordance with the hopes and aspirations of the people, he said.

Khattar started the ‘Jan Samvad’ programme in Rohtak district last year. Later, the programme was organised in Sirsa, Sonipat, Karnal, Fatehabad, Bhiwani and Palwal districts.

His three-day ‘Jan Samvad’ programme in Kurukshetra district concluded on Wednesday.

Delhi govt announces extension of free sewer connection scheme

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi government on Monday announced the extension of its free sewer connection scheme, saying it will help reduce pollution in the Yamuna river.

Water minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said the city government will provide free sewer connections in the unauthorised colonies of Sangam Vihar and Ghalibpur and Rs 7 crore has been earmarked for this purpose.

He said the Arvind Kejriwal government has connected 527 new unauthorised colonies to the sewer network since coming to power eight years ago, expanding the sewer network by 2,371 kilometres.

    MS Education Academy

This new initiative will further strengthen the government’s commitment to improve the living conditions of the people in Delhi, Bhardwaj said.

Untapped wastewater from unauthorised colonies and jhuggi-jhopri clusters, and poor quality of treated wastewater discharged from sewage treatment plants and common effluent treatment plants is the main reason behind high levels of pollution in the Yamuna.

Twenty-two drains carrying domestic wastewater and industrial effluent fall into the Yamuna between Wazirabad and Okhla. Though the 22-km stretch is less than two per cent of the river length, it accounts for about 80 per cent of the pollution in the river.

  • Hochul announces ‘conceptual’ budget deal

    Hochul announces ‘conceptual’ budget deal

    [ad_1]

    screen shot 2023 04 27 at 8 30 12 pm

Hochul framed the deal as a win for affordability in the state, but recognized she didn’t get one of her top priorities: A housing deal to force municipalities to build 800,000 new homes over the next decade. The budget will include $391 million in rental assistance, which will largely help the troubled New York City Housing Authority.

“Did we accomplish what this moment called for?” she said in an evening briefing in the Capitol. “Did we make a difference in the lives of New Yorkers? We’re going to be able to answer that question yes.”

When the budget will be finalized and passed by the Legislature is unclear.; legislative leaders did not attend her briefing. Lawmakers have mostly returned to their districts, and no bills were printed at the time of Hochul’s announcement. It will thus likely be several days until the passage of the spending plan that was due to pass by March 31.

“There’s obviously fine tuning that has to be done. That’ll be worked out over the weekend,” Hochul said.

While details will not be known until the bills are printed, Hochul outlined some of the highlights, many of which have been expected and reported.

Those include the third set of changes to the state’s bail reform laws since they were enacted in 2019. This round includes language that gives judges more discretion to hold individuals accused of certain violent crimes.

But a proposal to change the laws on discovery to avoid cases being tossed on procedural grounds failed at the last minute. Hochul placed the blame on district attorneys, who have said that the requirements to quickly share evidence with arrestees is unmanageable. Instead, the courts are getting more money to increase staff and resources, she said.

“We thought we had a plan that met the needs, and the district attorneys decided that was not the path they wanted to go on despite saying so initially,” the Democratic governor said.

The budget will also include language designed to crack down on illegal marijuana retailers, which was one of the final sticking points in the budget. It will be “aggressive” and attempt to penalize those sellers who aren’t paying taxes, but there appears to be more fine-tuning required.

“We’re working on the details of that,” said Hochul’s counsel Liz Fine.

The deal will also include a plan to raise the minimum wage to $17 an hour, starting with $16 an hour next year in New York City, and then indexing it to inflation within a few years.

On transit, the budget will create a pilot program for free service on five MTA bus lines, and the city will be on the hook for $165 million to fund the transit system — rather than $500 million as Hochul originally proposed, as well as limiting a payroll mobility tax only to the city, not the suburbs.

It will also include the largest Medicaid rate increase in two decades, Hochul said, who added the budget “makes critical policy changes” in the area of mental health and funds 1,000 new in-patient psychiatric beds as well as 3,500 units of supportive housing.

The budget includes $400 million for utility relief as well as a requirement that homes constructed after 2025 meet zero emission standard.

As expected, the budget includes minimal language on housing, she noted.

“I believe major action is required to meet the scale of this crisis. The legislature saw it differently,” Hochul said.

But she promised to continue “working hard and fighting” on the topic and teased executive actions which will be announced “in the coming weeks.”
