  • Now Waaaaaaiiiit a Minute! Presidential Candidates Keep Stumping At the Animal House Frat.

    [ad_1]

Then you see how beaten down it is, the roof shingles not all there, the windows barely holding the AC units tucked within them. Get closer still, and (at least in the old days) you start to take in that putrid smell; embedded from the decades of beer, puke and, yes, urine that were left to coat the floor and the walls.

It is not a particularly inspiring place, even if there are those who love it. And yet, Alpha Delta has a semi-rich history of hosting those aspiring to be elected to the White House.

Over the weekend, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and current candidate for president Nikki Haley became the latest to make the pilgrimage to the land of Bluto, Pinto and Flounder. She spoke in the room known as the Great Hall (which is, contrary to the name, a pretty no-frills space), delivering a 45 minute address that touched on the standard campaign topics. Only briefly did she acknowledge the history — often fun, quite literally forgettable and definitely problematic — of the place.

“You left out that Animal House was taken after this, right?” Haley said, following her introduction. “You gotta talk about that because I think it’s super cool.”

    Super cool, indeed.

The house began as a literary society in 1799, under the name Literary Adelphi, the Adelphian Society, or the Alpha Delta Society. In the 1840s it became Alpha Delta Phi, part of a larger, national society of fraternities. A major turning point came in the late 1960s, when it broke away from the national chapter and renamed itself Alpha Delta (not, exactly, the most creative of rebrands but we should assume the people behind it may have been intoxicated). The house’s cultural iconography came shortly thereafter when one of its alums, Chris Miller, wrote about his experiences in the house for National Lampoon. Those became the basis for the 1978 movie.

If you haven’t seen the flick, you should. It’s a snapshot of an era filled with hijinks (drinking with your friends and doing stupid stuff is fun!) and real blind spots. Fraternity life has moved on from then. But not that much. Alpha Delta got in a fair bit of trouble with the school over years and was derecognized by Dartmouth in 2015 after a pledge had to seek medical care from an infection caused by being branded with the AD symbol. The branding was voluntary, the humiliation was not, and on top of that he wasn’t the only one. Since then, there has been no fraternity, or students living within it.

Prior to that point, however, even the taint and stench of the house were no match for the allure of a political photo op or the chance for the candidate to seem a bit less guarded, a bit more youthful, perhaps even fun.

Decades before Haley graced the Great Hall, Bob Dole made his way to the front porch as part of his 1996 run for the White House.

“I did watch ‘Animal House’ last night just so I’d be prepared for this visit,” he said that day, in a moment captured by two of political journalism’s most venerated reporters, Dan Balz and David Broder from the Washington Post. “And I must say it reminded me of the Congress a great deal — particularly the House.”

Several hundred students were there to greet Dole on that chilly morning. They gazed down from the deck above the main entrance; youthful glows on their faces, a “Dole Leadership that Delivers” sign hanging below. The Senate Majority Leader looked out onto an absolutely packed lawn, lights shining on him, a touch of snow visible in the photos. It all looks crisp and vibrant. Had you no clue what often went on in that building behind him, you would have thought this was a moment of Norman Rockwell-like purity.

“The College wouldn’t permit a political rally to be held on college property, and so we hosted it,” said John Engelman, an AD alum who remained in the area after graduating and offered the closest thing to adult supervision as the frat’s “caretaker” for years. “The rally was held outdoors in January, no doubt because the odor inside the house would have horrified everyone.”

Four years after Dole’s sojourn to AD, Sen. John McCain made one of his own. He stood where his predecessor had, once more with the fraternity’s brothers looking down from above. An American flag adorned the entrance. The senator made, what the New York Times described as, a joke: “’We’re going to take those big money and fat cats and establishment people and knock them on their’ — he paused — ‘ear.’”

The frat boys surely had a righteous howl at that.

Four years after McCain, it was Sen. John Edwards’ turn to try his hand with the AD crowd. During the fall of 2003, the up-and-coming North Carolina Democrat was set to make a swing through Hanover when his staff came looking for potential spots for an event. I was a senior at the college and a member of the fraternity at the time and somehow convinced the campaign not only to come to AD but also to do what both Dole and McCain hadn’t: Bring the candidate inside.

I was shocked when they agreed.

In preparation, we hired a cleaning crew (at Engelman’s insistence) to try and fumigate the house. It didn’t really work. But the carpets looked nicer. We ordered a couple fruit platters for the occasion, and spread word that the senator would be swinging by after he delivered a speech at the arts center down the street.

When I showed up at the arts center to talk to his team that October morning, they informed me that they’d had a change of heart. Edwards was behind schedule and couldn’t possibly go one block away. Some pleading transpired and a thinly veiled threat was issued that the fraternity would marshal whatever campus influence it possessed to get people to vote for someone else. It was a hilariously empty ultimatum. No one was taking recommendations from us on how to vote, and no member of the frat was particularly interested in waking up early after a night of drinking to go canvassing.

But, wouldn’t you know it, Edwards managed to find the time.

He refused to go in, however. Instead, he spoke from the same porch, with the fraternity brothers looking down from above and a crowd on the lawn. It lasted all of a few minutes. Several photos were snapped. The fruit plates went untouched.

No candidate for president had graced AD since then until Haley’s visit last weekend (Andrew Yang, in his 2020 run, went to a different stomping ground on fraternity row). But J. Michael Hafner, the board president for the Alpha Delta Alumni Corporation, believes AD remains unmatched in terms of times it has hosted a White House aspirant.

In its state of inactivity, the alumni corporation has cleaned the house up a bit. While current students may no longer live there or join the fraternity, it’s taken on a new life for alums who find themselves back around campus. Today, one can rent office space or use a study room. Families and friends can book the space for dinner parties or social events. It’s a gathering site during class reunions.

It’s also returning to its foundational roots: not as a frat but as a literary society. Hafner said that they’ve approached Haley and other presidential candidates about using the space. Her camp took them up on the offer. It didn’t hurt matters that the space came for free.

“The greek letters, the name, it’s a bit of a problem,” said Hafner. “No one on the board cares about the name, everyone knows the history. I don’t think it’s healthy in any society to try and erase history. It is what it is. But look … we would offer [the space] to anyone, to foster the free exchange of ideas, which we strenuously advocate for.”

AD may be different now. It may smell better. But the presidential candidate pipeline persists.

Ranbir Kapoor, SRK to think about release dates of Jawan, Animal

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor who has given two consecutive superhit films- Brahamastra and TJMM in the worst phase of Bollywood is on the best stage of his career currently. The actor was spotted at T-series office last evening as he will be next seen in the production house’s ‘Animal’ which is set to release on August 11. Rumours mills suggest that the Rockstar actor has met SRK regarding the latter’s upcoming film Jawan’s release date.

The meeting happened after it was reported that Jawan release date has been postponed and it might release on August 11 too. A few reports claim that two big actors of Bollywood have met in this regard in T-series office while other reports quoting sources claim that calls have been made to Shah Rukh Khan to delay ‘Jawan’ by a few weeks by T Series production officials and Ranbir Kapoor.

A report quoting source says, “Perhaps, yesterday Ranbir also spoke to Shah Rukh regarding this. “Time and again, it has been proven in the past ten years that a clash of big films should be avoided as they eat into each other’s business. If ‘Jawan’ is delayed, it would be a magnanimous move by SRK.”

“Ranbir would obviously be happy. And if a decision of such kind has been taken, Ranbir must have already extended his vote of thanks to SRK. Theatres would love both the films to run well. Actually, both movies are believed to have been made well with very interesting plots,” the source concludes.

‘Jawan’ has Nayanthara opposite Shah Rukh and is produced by Gauri Khan and directed by Atlee.
Animal has Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Parineeti Chopra and Prem Chopra in lead roles. The movie is directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga.

‘The wolf does not belong here’: German summit convened after animal attacks

    [ad_1]

German farmers, conservationists and politicians have met at a wolf summit to discuss the animal’s future amid concerns that its population is out of control.

The farmers’ union is calling for a relaxation of rules over when wolves, strictly protected under EU law, can be shot, after a series of highly publicised deadly attacks on farm animals.

It has said that people in rural areas are fearful for their lives as well as the lives of their animals, with many farmers expressing concern for their livelihoods.

Germany is home to an estimated 161 packs of wolves (of between eight to 12 animals each) according to the Federal Wolf Documentation and Advisory Office. A further 43 pairs and 21 individual animals were also registered.

Numbers have increased year on year since the wolf was placed under species protection in 1990, after it was considered to have more or less become extinct at the end of the 19thcentury.

The southern state of Bavaria has already taken its own decision to allow farmers to actively kill wolves where livestock is thought to be under particular threat.

Its leader, Markus Söder, visited an alpine village on Thursday that has reportedly been the scene of attacks on grazing animals, where he said the future of farming was in danger if wolf populations were not brought under control.

“I’ll say it quite clearly, the wolf does not belong here,” Söder told a gathering of farmers and their families in Oberaudorf. “We have introduced a new wolf bylaw … one breach is sufficient and the wolf can be removed from a region.”

His Christian Social Union (CSU) has said it would like to see the elimination of all wolves from Germany. Its larger sister party, the centre-right CDU, has called for hunting rights to be expanded to include wolves.

    skip past newsletter promotion

Harald Ebner, of the Greens party, head of the federal committee for environment and nature protection, said it would be wrong for such permission to be granted. “The quick call to arms is no solution and the perpetual appeal for wolf-free zones and quotas contravenes EU law and will bring no relief to keepers of grazing animals,” he said.

The environment minister, Steffi Lemke, also of the Greens, has argued for increasing protection both for grazing animals and wolves. “We cannot in good conscience, call for the protection of animals in African countries at the same time as saying here that it is not possible to protect the wolf,” she said

The farmers’ union in Brandenburg, northern Germany, home to the largest number of wolves in the country with an estimated 47 packs and 14 pairs, is calling for a quota that could be shot legally each year, drawing on wolf population control measures in Finland and Sweden.

Brandenburg permitted wolves to be shot in specifically defined cases in 2022, after a series of livestock killings. A male wolf was killed in March after 76 livestock deaths were attributed to it.

  • ‘Like an animal’: Jan. 6 defendant who pinned officer in tunnel is sentenced to 7.5 years

‘Like an animal’: Jan. 6 defendant who pinned officer in tunnel is sentenced to 7.5 years

    [ad_1]

    capitol riot newspaper editor 33208

“I wish I had better control of myself,” he said, calling his behavior “less like a citizen and more like an animal.”

McCaughey pinned Hodges in a Capitol doorway for more than two minutes while another rioter ripped off the officer’s gas mask, stole his baton and struck him with it. It became a symbol of the barbaric violence that unfolded in the Capitol’s lower West Terrace tunnel, famous before that day as the corridor through which presidents-elect emerge to take their oath of office.

McCaughey was at the “vanguard” of that violent section of the mob, McFadden noted, and arrived there only after spending 20 minutes taunting police before their line collapsed and they were forced to retreat into the tunnel. McCaughey became “a poster child of all that was dangerous and appalling” about Jan. 6, McFadden said.

McFadden found McCaughey guilty in September after a bench trial on three charges of assaulting or impeding police officers, obstructing Congress’ proceedings and participating in a civil disorder, among several other charges. He was tried alongside two other defendants who were nearby in the tunnel.

Despite the extraordinary aspects of McCaughey’s case, in some ways he cut a familiar profile for Jan. 6 defendants: He had no prior criminal record and was seen as a positive member of his Connecticut community prior to the 2020 election. Afterward, amid Trump’s false claims about the results, McCaugehy traveled down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories, many amplified by Fox News and other Trump-aligned media outlets.

In McCaughey’s case, there was also the role of his father, whom family members described as a pernicious influence on him — encouraging his beliefs that the election was stolen.

McCaughey’s father accompanied his son to Washington but became separated from him before the assaults, McCaughey’s defense attorney, Dennis Boyle, said.

Hodges also addressed McFadden prior to sentencing, describing the daily trauma he still experiences as a result of the assaults he suffered on Jan. 6. He urged McFadden to reject claims by McCaughey and others of being simply “caught up in the moment.” But he also described McCaughey as a “foot soldier” in a larger effort by those seeking to overturn the 2020 election.

McCaughey’s sentence mirrors two handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson to rioters who assaulted D.C. Police officer Michael Fanone. Both men — Albuquerque Head and Kyle Young — were sentenced to just over seven years in prison for their crimes, which were also committed by the lower West Terrace tunnel. It also matches the sentence of Guy Reffitt, a Texas militia member who carried a gun at the Capitol and engaged in a lengthy standoff with police that helped rioters amass at the foot of the building.

The lengthiest Jan. 6 sentence to date belongs to Thomas Webster, a former NYPD cop who was convicted by a jury of a brutal assault against a police officer defending the line at the Capitol. U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Webster to 10 years in prison, a steep sentence but one that fell more than 90 months shy of the Justice Department’s recommendation.

  • Chicken is treated as animal under law: Guj Govt tells HC

Chicken is treated as animal under law: Guj Govt tells HC

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: Chicken and other varieties of poultry birds fall in the animal’ category under the Food Safety and Standards Act, the Gujarat Government told the High Court on Friday.

It prompted senior lawyer Percy Kavina, who is representing chicken shops which have faced action for violation of rules, to say that in that case poultry shops will have to engage veterinary doctors to comply fully with law.

In January, two NGOs filed a PIL in the High Court seeking a ban on supply of poultry birds to meat shops contending that birds were illegally slaughtered in these establishments instead of being sent to slaughterhouses.

The HC then directed the authorities to take action against unlicensed meat shops. Civic bodies across the state raided meat shops and issued closure notices to several of them for violation of rules.

Several chicken shops were also shut during this drive. The owners of these sealed meat shops and chicken shops approached the High Court for relief.

The bench of Justice NV Anjaria and Justice Niral Mehta was hearing these civil applications. During the hearing on these applications on Friday, Government Pleader Manisha Lavkumar said the definition ofanimal’ under the Act also includes poultry.
Fish is not included because they are not “slaughtered” but only taken out of water, the lawyer said.

Advocate Kavina said the inclusion of poultry in the larger category of meat “goes against age old practice of how meat has been sold and consumed.”

When poultry birds are slaughtered in a small concealed area discreetly, it should not be banned, he said.

If chicken is considered to be on par with meat, “chicken shop owners need to appoint a veterinarian to do the stamping (as in slaughterhouses),” he said.

“Inclusion of poultry as an animal ignores the way poultry is sold in retail. You are insisting that poultry is meat and therefore it must be checked pre-slaughter and post-slaughter and then it should be stamped. It is impossible for small chicken sellers. He will have to keep a vet there,” said Kavina.
