  • Andhra Pradesh: Rs 3 crore penalty on TTD for FCRA violation

Andhra Pradesh: Rs 3 crore penalty on TTD for FCRA violation

    [ad_1]

Tirupati: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a penalty of Rs 3 crore on India’s richest religious trust, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) for violation of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

TTD chairman Y.V. Subba Reddy said on Monday that the RBI has imposed the penalty for not adhering to FCRA norms while depositing foreign currency dropped by devotees in ‘Hundi’ into the bank accounts.

He said the TTD’s FCRA license lapsed in 2018 and since this has not been renewed yet, the TTD board is facing problems in depositing foreign currency in its bank accounts.

Subba Reddy also revealed that the TTD has paid the RBI penalty of Rs 3 crore in two installments. The TTD has also requested RBI to renew the FCRA license.

The TTD chairman said the TTD currently has foreign currency amounting to Rs 30 crore. The foreign currency was dropped by devotees anonymously in ‘Hundi’ at Tirumala temple.

The TTD manages the affairs of Sri Venkateswara temple atop Tirumala, considered as the world’s richest Hindu temple, and some other shrines in different parts of the country.

Meanwhile, Subba Reddy reviewed the arrangements made at Tirumala for the summer season.

The TTD also decided to issue Divya Darshan tokens from April 1 for the devotees who walk up to the hill shrine.

Every day, 10,000 tokens will be issued per day for pilgrims using Alipiri walkway. Another 5,000 tokens will be issued for those reaching the temple through the Tirumala steps route.

Subba Reddy said during summer break, recommendation letters will be reduced. The TTD also decided to tighten the rules in the matter of allotment of rooms in Tirumala.

The TTD chairman said that with the introduction of face recognition technology, accommodation will be provided to devotees in a transparent manner.

Last week, the TTD announced that it has passed a Rs 4,411 crore budget for 2023-24, a big jump of 43 per cent over the previous year.

The budget for 2023-24 is said to be the highest since the TTD’s inception in 1933.

The big increase in budget size was attributed to the phenomenal rise in Hundi collections or devotees’ offerings at the ancient temple.

For the current year, the lion’s share of revenues totalling Rs 1,591 crore are anticipated from Hundi and other capital receipts. Similarly, interest receipts are expected to generate Rs 990 crore, while Rs 500 crore is expected to be realised from laddu and other ‘prasadam’ sales.

  • Andhra official’s murder: Colleague, two others arrested

Andhra official’s murder: Colleague, two others arrested

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Police on Monday claimed to have cracked the mystery behind the murder of an Animal Husbandry Department official in Kadapa district with the arrest of three men, including an employee in the same department.

The body of Kadapa Animal Husbandry Deputy Director Chinna Acchanna, 58, was found at Guvvalacheruvu Ghat in Ramapuram Mandal of Annamayya district on March 24, about 12 days after he went missing.

The murder of a Dalit official in the Chief Minister’s home district had triggered a row with opposition parties and some Dalit groups staging protests.

A special panel of Kadapa and Annamayya district police cracked the case.

Kadapa’s Superintendent of Police K.K.N. Anburajan on Monday told reporters that Subhash Chandrabose, working in the same department as assistant surgeon, committed the crime with the help of two others.

According to police, Chandrabose had differences with Acchanna over some departmental issues and had developed a grouse after the latter had removed him from the Comprehensive Financial Management System (CFMC), stopped his salary, and later surrendered his post to the government.

Police also arrested Chenna Krishna and Balaji Nayak in the murder case.

The SP revealed that Chandrabose, along with two others, hatched the murder plot at a lodge in Porumamilla.

On March 12, when Acchanna was returning from prayers at a church, the accused kidnapped him and took him to Guvvalacheruvu Ghat in a car. They later murdered him near the Ghat. The assailants threw Acchanna’s mobile phone on a hill at another place.

The SP said the police cracked the case with the help of phone call data of the accused. The police investigations were on to know if any other person is involved.

The murder of the Dalit officials had sparked outrage.

Leaders of the Left parties, Jana Sena, Lok Satta and BSP and BC leaders had staged a protest in front of the Animal Husbandry Department office demanding authorities to speed up the enquiry and set up a committee headed by a sitting judge.

They alleged that the apathy of authorities led to the death of the Dalit employee. They further alleged that although Acchanna’s son complained to the police on March 12, the police didn’t take any action.

On March 12, Achanna’s son Klinter Chakraborty filed a complaint with the Kadapa One Town Police. He had also named a few colleagues of Acchanna for harassing him and passing casteist remarks.

Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) leader Manda Krishna Madiga demanded a probe by a sitting judge. He alleged that police took no action on the complaint by Achanna’s family for 12 days. He said the police booked a case only after his body was found. He warned that if any attempt was made to shield the culprit, MPRS will launch a state-wide protest.

  • Crops over 3 lakh acres damaged in Andhra Pradesh

Crops over 3 lakh acres damaged in Andhra Pradesh

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Crops over 3 lakh acres were damaged in Andhra Pradesh due to unseasonal rains and thunderstorms a week ago.

The standing rabi crops which were ready for harvest were damaged in various districts across the state.

Farmers in coastal districts and Rayalaseema faced the wrath of untimely rains and their hopes of reaping a good harvest in the next 10-15 days were shattered.

The unseasonal rains caused losses to maize, chilly, paddy, and tobacco crops. The mango crop was also extensively damaged. Banana, tomatoes, other horticultural and vegetable crops also suffered damage.

Farmers were shocked as the maize crop which was ready for harvest was inundated in few districts. Strong winds also damaged mango, papaya, and banana crops.

Farmers in several areas complained that authorities did not come to their rescue. Agriculture Department officials were not seen in the fields. In Anantapur district, affected farmers staged a protest on Tadipatri highway.

Shocked over crop losses, a couple of farmers ended their lives.

In Bapatla district, woman farmer Nirmala, 48, committed suicide due to losses to her tobacco crop, while in Chittoor district, farmer Bhaskar, 45, consumed pesticides as he was unable to bear the crop loss. He had taken a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh to grow cauliflower and tomato on two acres but the entire crop was inundated.

Farmers cultivating maize also suffered massive losses. It was decided to cultivate maize on 4.97 lakh acres during Rabi season but actual cultivation was taken up on 5.90 lakh acres. The farmers are estimated to have suffered a loss of Rs 35,000 per acre.

Chilly farmers in south coastal districts were the worst hit. They had invested Rs 2.50 lakh to Rs 3 lakh per acre and reportedly suffered losses of Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 per acre.

According to Information and Public Relations Minister, Srinivasa Venugopal Krishna, maize, paddy, black gram and chilly crops were damaged in 15 mandals of Nandyal district.

Crops of maize suffered damage in parts of NTR, Parvathipuram Manyam, and Kurnool districts. Banana crop damage was reported from Parvathipuram Manyam, while black gram and cotton crop damage was reported in a mandal in Prakasam district.

Farmers in Kadapa and Annamaiah districts also faced the loss of horticulture crops, especially papaya, banana, mango, lemon, watermelon, and turmeric.

Though it has been a week since the unseasonal rains lashed the state, the government has still not come out with the data relating to crop losses and as a result, farmers were still waiting for the announcement of compensation.

It was on March 19 that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy held a meeting with senior officials here on Sunday and reviewed the situation arising out of untimely rains.

Seeking details of the crop loss caused by the unseasonal rains, the Chief Minister directed them to start enumeration of the crop loss immediately. He directed all district collectors to complete the enumeration in a week and take steps to help the farmers who have suffered crop loss due to the rains.

  • TDP appears to be on comeback trail in Andhra Pradesh

TDP appears to be on comeback trail in Andhra Pradesh

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: With a year to go for the Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, the political equation in the state appears to be changing.

After a humiliating defeat in 2019 polls and the loss in every election since then, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) appears to be on comeback trail.

The recent victories in Legislative Council polls have infused a new life into the TDP, which was looking no match for the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) till a few months ago.

The TDP’s winning four Council seats has not changed the power equation in the state but it has definitely lifted the sagging morale of the opposition party.

While TDP winning three Council seats from graduates’ constituencies indicates that the party regained lost ground among the electorate, the shock defeat of YSRCP in one of the seven Council seats from the MLA quota shows despite the vice-like grip of Jagan Mohan Reddy, the ruling party looks vulnerable.

The cross-voting by four MLAs of YSRCP, which helped the TDP candidate win the seat, exposed the chinks in the ruling party’s armour.

Political analysts say with back to back wins, TDP president and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has sent a clear message that he may be down but is certainly not out.

TDP, which was left with 19 MLAs in 175-member Assembly after four of its MLAs switched loyalties to YSRCP, did not have the required strength (22) to win the seat while YSRCP with the support of four rebels of TDP and lone legislator of Jana Sena Party (JSP) was confident of winning all seven seats.

YSRCP’s strategists had not taken into account two MLAs who had recently raised a banner of revolt. They were still sure of a clean sweep but they received a big shock when results revealed that two more MLAs had revolted. As a result, TDP’s candidate Panchumarthi Anuradha was elected with 23 votes, one more than the required number.

Chandrababu Naidu called it God’s script. “The Almighty has redrafted the script,” the TDP chief remarked, in what is seen as a response to the remark made by Jagan Mohan Reddy after TDP lost power in 2019 and could win only 23 Assembly seats.

Jagan Mohan Reddy had stated after YSRCP stormed to power that God had punished Chandrababu Naidu for his misdeeds. He alleged that Naidu had purchased 23 MLAs of YSRCP after the 2014 elections. “Now TDP got only 23 seats and the results also came on May 23. God has written a beautiful script with 23,” said Jagan.

Jagan had also pointed out that Naidu illegally took away three MPs of YSRCP and now his party got only three Lok Sabha seats.

The morale boosting win for TDP came close on the heels of the party bagging three Council seats from graduates’ constituencies.

The TDP received a big boost with victories in north Andhra, East Rayalaseema and West Rayalaseema graduates’ constituencies.

Naidu’s party bagged West Rayalaseema (Kadapa-Anantapur-Kurnool districts), which is considered a stronghold of Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP. It also won the North Andhra (Srikakulam-Vizianagaram-Visakhapatnam) and East Rayalaseema (Prakasam-Nellore-Chittoor) seats.

The defeat in all three graduates’ constituencies is seen as a major setback for the ruling party as they were spread in 108 of the total 175 Assembly segments.

YSRCP, however, won both teachers’ constituencies (East Rayalaseema and West Rayalaseema) and four local body segments.

TDP’s win has come at a time when YSRCP was exuding confidence of winning all 175 Assembly seats in the next elections.

At the YSRCP plenary in July last year, he asked the party cadre to gear up for winning all 175 Assembly seats in 2024 polls.

Sounding the poll bugle, he said that Mission 175 is not impossible as the party swept all local body elections by winning the hearts of people.

Jagan Reddy called upon the cadre to carry the welfare initiatives taken in the last three years to every household and highlight the deceptive maneuver of the TDP and the ‘band of thieves’.

After the recent setbacks for YSRCP, Chandrababu feels that the days of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, are numbered as the people are no longer reposing faith in him.

“When a service-minded leader like Mr Giridhar Reddy could not continue in the party, how can a common party activist continue in the YSRCP,” asked Chandrababu while welcoming the YSRCP MLA into TDP fold.

“Now the slogan of psycho should go and cycle (TDP’s election symbol) should come back has been resounding across the state,” he said.

Political analysts believe that buoyed by the recent victories in the Council polls, the TDP will now go for the offensive against YSRCP in the run up to the polls. “Naidu may look to woo more disgruntled YSRCP leaders to the TDP fold to add to the problems of the ruling party,” analysts said.

Naidu’s son and TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh, who is currently on a statewide padyatra, has also received a shot in the arm. The young leader is likely to further step up his campaign against the YSRCP.

TDP’s win is also expected to hasten the process of political realignment. Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader and actor Pawan Kalyan is likely to initiate serious efforts for the TDP-JSP-BJP alliance against YSRCP to prevent split of anti-incumbency votes.

Pawan Kalyan, who already has an alliance with the BJP, is expected to mount pressure on the saffron party to decide quickly on the proposal for the grand alliance.

The actor, who recently met Naidu twice to discuss the possibility of alliance, will also be keen to jump into fray to take on Jagan Mohan Reddy.
