    SRINAGAR: Two people died when lightning struck a high-altitude meadow in the Mujpathri area of Budgam district on Saturday, officials said.

    The lightning struck the Sochalpathri area of Mujpathri, which is the upper region of Doodhpathri in Budgam, resulting in the deaths of two people, according to officials.

    The deceased have been identified as Taja Begum, the wife of Abdus Samad Chopan, and Mohd Sultan Chopan, the son-in-law of Ghulam Mohd Chopan. They were residents of Gurwaith Kalan.

    Meanwhile, a team of officials has rushed to the spot, and further investigations have been taken up. (KS)

    SRINAGAR: Special Investigation Unit of Kashmir Police conducted searches at the residential premise of an active Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday.

    Police in a statement said that Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Kulgam on Saturday conducted searches in the residential premises of Abdul Gani Bhat, father of active militant Farooq Ahmad Bhat alias Nali, at Chek Desen Yaripora.

    Farooq Bhat is an active militant of the proscribed militant outfit HM and is wanted in many militant-related cases.

    The spokesman further stated that the searches were conducted after Designated Special Judge Under NIA ACT, Kulgam issued a search warrant in case FIR No. 142/2019 of P/S Yaripora Kulgam. The case pertains to the killing of five non-local laborers at Katrosa Kulgam in year 2019. The SIU is investigating the case and has been conducting searches and investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice, reads the statement.

    On this occasion, Commissioner STD J&K Dr Rashmi Singh applauded the efforts of the department in ensuring successful implementation of GST. She said that winning SKOCH Award is a significant accomplishment and reflects the dedication and hard work of the the whole team of employees of the department in both divisions of UT. She further added that this shall serves as a source of inspiration for others who are working towards similar goals.

    During previous financial year, the department launched several initiatives to increase taxpayer awareness, including seminars, workshops, and outreach programs to educate taxpayers about their rights and responsibilities.

    The State Taxes Department also stepped up its efforts to crack down on tax evasion, including conducting stock checking, inspections and audit to identify and penalise tax evaders.

    Further, the department implemented a range of technological solutions, including the use of data analytics, BIFA, artificial intelligence, machine learning to automate tax administration processes and improve the efficiency of the tax system.

    The Commissioner State Taxes Department J&K Dr Rashmi Singh (IAS) conducted various outreach programmes, engaged with taxpayers, understood their concerns, thereby helping build trust and improve communication between the State Taxes Department and the people it serves.

    This resulted in awareness and understanding of tax laws and regulations. Dr. Rashmi Singh time and again reiterated that, “interaction with taxpayers offers clear and accessible information about tax requirements and procedures, thereby helping ensure that taxpayers are able to comply with the law and avoid potential penalties. At the same time, this helps in identifying areas where the tax system may need improvement or where there may be opportunities to make the process more efficient and user-friendly.”

    SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir government’s tourism department Saturday said that they have selected 300 destinations for promoting film tourism in the UT this year while G-20 will be the major international event and a great opportunity for J&K.

    Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of the first show of the newly released movie—‘Welcome To Kashmir’, directed by Tariq Bhat, at Inox Cinema Srinagar, Commissioner Secretary Tourism, Syed Abid Rasheed said that last year 200 plus movies were shot in J&K.

    “This year our focus is to promote film tourism and for that, we have kept 300 destinations on the table of film producers and directors to choose any place for shooting,” he said.

    He said this year, film tourism will be promoted in a major way so that many untouched destinations are explored. “There are many destinations much better than European destinations in the UT,” said Rasheed. “Recently, a big film production house shot a movie in Kashmir.”

    To a query about the G-20 event, the Commissioner Secretary of Tourism said that the third working group meeting of the G-20 tourism group will be hosted by J&K which is a “major international event.” “This is a great opportunity for J&K to showcase its beauty. Through the summit, we will be able to promote film tourism in J&K,” he said—(KNO)

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Lands In JK, To Visit Rajouri

    SRINAGAR: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Jammu on Saturday and is scheduled to visit Rajouri, where five army personnel were killed in a blast during an encounter in the Kandi forest area of the district yesterday.

    An official said that Rajnath Singh landed in Jammu today, where he was received by Army Chief Manoj Pande and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

    He said that Singh will head towards Rajouri to assess the security situation amid the ongoing anti-militancy operation in the area.

    Five army soldiers were killed, and an officer was injured after militants triggered a blast during an encounter in the Kandi forest area on Friday.

    Earlier today, the army said that a militant has been killed while another one is likely injured as the operation resumed in the Kandi forest area. (KNO)

    SRINAGAR: Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta on Friday said that all the five medical colleges approved during phase one and the Associate Hospitals(AHs)  shall be completed before the end of the financial year.

    He was speaking while reviewing the progress of works on all the newly established Medical Colleges across JK besides the ongoing work on the two All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) being established at Vijaypur (Jammu) and Awantipora (Kashmir).

    Dr Mehta said that all five Medical colleges approved during phase one shall be completed before the end of the financial year.

    The meeting was attended by Secretary, Health; MD, JKPCC; Chief Engineers of PWD Kashmir/Jammu besides other concerned officers.

    It was impressed upon all concerned to complete all the pending works of colleges such as Academic, Administrative, and Hostel Blocks by June this year and finish works of all Associated Hospitals (AHs) by the year-end. It was emphasized that the academic and medical activities at these colleges should not get affected in any way.

    The progress of two new Medical Colleges being established at Udhampur and Handwara (Kupwara) was also discussed.

    The meeting was informed that the Academic, Administrative, and Hostel blocks at all the earlier sanctioned five Medical Colleges are nearing completion and only a few minor works are under progress to be completed at the earliest. It was further added that the work on Udhampur College has been taken in hand recently and the tenders for Handwara College have been opened and the contract would be awarded soon.

    Moreover, it was informed that with the operationalization of these five New Medical Colleges in Phase-I, the intake capacity of MBBS seats in the UT has increased from 500 to 1100 seats annually. The intake capacity is expected to further increase to 1300 MBBS seats this year with the start of the academic session in GMC Udhampur and Handwara sanctioned under Phase-III of Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Establishment of Medical Colleges. The Letter of Permission (LoP) has been received in favour of GMC Udhampur and Handwara for 100 MBBS seats each recently from the National Medical Commission. Additionally, two new AIIMS at Vijaypur and Awantipora shall add another 200 MBBS seats.

    The meeting further deliberated upon the status of two AIIMS level Hospitals being established at Vijaypur (Samba) and Awantipora (Pulwama). It was said that the AIIMS, Vijaypur is all set to be dedicated to the   public by October this year and AIIMS, Awantipora by 2025 after 34 more acres of land were provided to the institute for its updated design.

    It is pertinent to mention here that the medical infrastructure and education have been given a major push during the past couple of years.

    Two AIIMS-level Institutions, seven new Nursing Colleges shall also be set up across the UT. Further, the District and Sub-District Hospitals are given being given adequate manpower in addition to other infrastructure required for providing quality health care to the public.

    SRINAGAR: Weather Department on Saturday forecasted widespread moderate rain and thunderstorms over the Kashmir division during the next 24 hours.

    A meteorological department official stated that there was also a possibility of light rain and thunderstorms at “scattered places” over the Jammu division during that time.

    For the subsequent two days, the official said that fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms were expected in J&K.

    “Rain and thunderstorms are most likely to commence from late afternoon and evening (today) at many places of Kashmir, Zojila-Drass, etc. and the Jammu region by night,” he said.

    From May 7-8, he stated that rain and thunderstorms were expected at many places of J&K. “Hailstorms and gusty winds are also possible at scattered places.”

    From May 9-12, he said, “mainly dry” weather was expected. He asked farmers to postpone spraying orchards and harvesting crops until May 8th.

    The official also urged tourists to keep warm clothes and eatables ready, as “the weather will be colder until May 8.”

    Regarding temperature, he said Srinagar recorded a low of 10.4°C, which was 0.7°C above normal for the summer capital, against 9.6°C on the previous night.

    Qazigund recorded a low of 8.0°C against 7.8°C on the previous night, which was below normal by 0.5°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam recorded a low of 5.4°C against 3.6°C on the previous night, which was 0.5°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 8.2°C against 7.0°C on the previous night, and it was 0.2°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of 4.0°C against 2.2°C on the previous night, and it was 0.3°C below normal for the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said the mercury settled at 7.4°C, the same as on the previous night, and it was 1.0°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 19.7°C against 17.3°C on the previous night, which was 2.9°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal recorded a low of 9.3°C, which was below normal by 0.8°C, Batote 11.6°C (0.9°C below normal), Katra 16.1°C (3.1°C below normal), and Bhaderwah 10.0°C (below normal by 0.8°C). The official added that Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of minus 0.4°C.

    SRINAGAR:  A 58-year-old woman died after a gas cylinder caught fire and exploded at the Ali Kadal area of Srinagar on Saturday. The LPG cylinder explosion damaged the three-story house even as the sleuths of Fire and Emergency Department controlled the fire from spreading in the congested locality, official sources said.

    They said the woman identified as Nafeesa (58) was inside the kitchen of the house when the gas cylinder caught fire and exploded, leading to on spot death of the lady who according to the locals had not been keeping well for quite some time and had been largely bedridden.

    Meanwhile, the fire raged and engulfed the house, causing substantial damage to it. However, they said, immediately fire tenders rushed to the area, and the blaze was brought under control.

    A police official said that a case has been registered in this regard and further investigations taken up. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: One militant has been killed and another likely injured in a fresh exchange of fire that erupted in the woods of Rajouri in the early hours of Saturday.

    Five army personnel were killed in the ongoing encounter in the Kandi forest area on Friday morning.

    Defence spokesman Lt. Colonel Devender Anand said that one militant was killed while another was likely wounded in the gunfight.

    “In the ongoing joint operation in Kandi Forest, Rajouri sector by Indian Army in coordination with JKP & CRPF, at 7:am hours the cordon while closing in spotted and pinned down the terrorists. In the ensuing gunbattle, one terrorist has been neutralized and one terrorist is likely to be injured,” he said.

    He further added that Huge recoveries have been made in the operation so far.

    The recoveries include one AK56, four magazines of AK, 56 rounds of AK, 1 x 9mm pistol with a mag, three grenades & one ammunition pouch.

    “Identity of the neutralized terrorist is being ascertained,” he said.

    Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh along with Army Chief General Manoj Pandey will visit Rajouri to assess the ground situation where troops have launched a massive operation after killing 10 army personnel in the past two weeks.

    Officials said that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh along with Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande is likely to chair a high-level security meeting in Jammu before flying back to Delhi.

    Meanwhile, Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi reached Rajouri early morning to review the ongoing operation.

    “Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi Army Commander Northern Command at Ground Zero, reviewing the operational situation on the ongoing operations at Kandi Rajouri where contact was re-established with militants,”  Northern Command said in a tweet.

    “He was briefed on all aspects of the operations by ground commanders,”  it added.
