People like Atiq Ahmad, Amritpal Singh cancer for country, despise them: RSS leader

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar on Sunday said people such as gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and Khalistani preacher Amritpal Singh should be despised as they are enemies of humanity and “cancer” for the country.

Kumar was addressing an Eid Milan ceremony organised by the Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM) in the national capital.

Ahmad and his brother ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists on April 15 in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, while Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh was arrested on April 23 by the Punjab Police after a month-long hunt.

“Be it Atiq Ahmad, Amritpal, any terrorist or naxalite, all of them are enemies of humanity. They are going to snatch away people’s smiles. Such people should be despised and not supported. Voice should be raised against them. People like atiq and amritpal are cancer for the country,” the MRM in a statement quoted the RSS leader as saying at the event.

Kumar, a member of the RSS national executive, is the chief patron of the MRM.

“Eid means happiness but if Islam is tainted because of a few people, who believe in Islam, there is a need for us to ponder seriously as to what paths have been shown to us by Islam and the Quran,” Kumar said.

He called upon people to follow their respective religions and have respect for each others’ faith. “We are all one and if we accept this, there will never be any quarrel or trouble,” Kumar said, adding that “just follow your religion”.

“Don’t condemn or criticise any other religion. Have respect for all religions,” he said .

Addressing the event, senior RSS leader Ram Lal stressed on maintaining unity and integrity of the country and called upon people to take a vow that they will not let anyone divide them.

Amritpal arrest: Was in touch with officials, did not sleep, says Punjab CM

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Hours after radical preacher and Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh was arrested by Punjab police, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said he was in touch with senior officials throughout Saturday night about the operation and asserted that those who try to disturb peace will face action as per law.

In a video message on Sunday, Mann also thanked the people of Punjab for their cooperation and said he does not want the youth to be misled by people with vested interests who run their shops by driving a campaign against the country.

Punjab’s land is fertile and anything can grow here, but “seeds of hatred will never grow nor will these be allowed to grow”, the chief minister emphasised.

    MS Education Academy

Mann said that he wants the youth of Punjab to hold degrees in their hands, appointment letters for occupying high posts and medals in top sporting events.

He said people had given the responsibility to the Aam Aadmi Party, which entrusted him with the duty, as the chief minister, to protect the life and property of the people.

“For that, we may have to take any action or take tough measures but not against any innocent,” he said, adding the law is taking its course.

Facing flak over the last month for the failure to arrest Amritpal, the chief minister stressed he did not want any bloodshed during the operation.

He said after he received information on Saturday night, “I did not sleep the whole night and I was in regular touch with senior officials over phone after every 15 minutes, half an hour to get information.”

“I wanted that entire thing (operation to arrest Amritpal) should be done in a peaceful manner,” he added.

Referring to the police crackdown on March 18 against Amritpal and his aides belonging to ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD) outfit, Mann said in an attempt to arrest the radical preacher on that day, “maybe, bullets could have been fired. But we did not want any bloodshed”.

Amritpal, charged under the stringent National Security Act, was arrested in Rode village of Punjab’s Moga district on Sunday morning after police personnel surrounded him, leaving him with no way to escape. He was taken to Dibrugarh in Assam where nine of his associates are presently lodged at Dibrugarh Central Jail.

Security in and around the jail premises has been beefed up since March 19, when four members of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD).

In the video message, Mann said, “Today Amritpal Singh has been arrested. Those who will try to disturb peace and harmony and break the law of the country will face action as per law. We will not trouble any innocent. We do not do vendetta politics.

The arrest came more than a month after the state police launched the crackdown against him following the storming of the Ajnala police station by his supporters to secure the release of an arrested associate.

Recalling the February 23 Ajnala incident in which Amritpal and his supporters brought the Palki Sahib of Guru Granth Sahib, Mann said he had given strict instructions to the Director General of Police that utmost restraint has to be used and the ‘maryada’ (respect) of Guru Granth Sahib has to be preserved.

He said some police personnel sustained injuries in that incident, adding for “the holy Guru Granth Sahib, we can give any sacrifice”.

He appreciated the “utmost restraint” shown by police incident while dealing with the situation.

Mann said that sometime back, an attempt to disturb law and order and brotherhood came to the notice in Punjab. “Immediately, action was taken on March 18,” said Mann as he referred to the police crackdown.

“Some persons who play into the hands of country’s enemies and some anti-social elements were nabbed,” he said.

Amritpal Singh, who used to run an organisation that used to inspire youths to take up the gun or indulge in anti-social acts has also been arrested, he said.

“I want to thank the 3.5 crore people of Punjab that during the last 30-35 when this (crackdown) operation was going on, they maintained brotherhood and no untoward incident was reported,” he said.

Peace, brotherhood and harmony are very strong in the state, he stressed.

Mann reiterated that Punjabis have made maximum sacrifices in the country’s freedom struggle and brave Punjabis continue to safeguard the country’s frontiers.

A few days ago, five of the four soldiers who died in the Poonch attack belonged to Punjab, he said.

“Punjab has always led the country – be it the country’s freedom struggle or green revolution and Punjab will continue to lead. I want that the state should emerge at the top in various developmental parameters and then no one can stop our country from becoming number one in the world,” he said.

Mann said that on Sunday he spoke to deputy commissioners and senior superintendents of police and people are carrying on with their normal routine. There is no report of any untoward incident, he said.

“I want to assure you that Punjab will continue to make progress, like it has been doing during the past year,” said Mann.

Dibrugarh: Amid tight security, Khalistani separatist Amritpal Singh was shifted to the Dibrugarh central jail in Assam on Sunday following his arrest in Punjab earlier in the day.

He was flown from Punjab’s Bathinda air base to Dibrugarh’s Mohanbari airport under tight security.

A team of Punjab Police and National Security Agency (NSA) officials arrived in Dibrugarh with the Waris Punjab De chief. A huge team of Assam Police personnel was present at the Mohanbari airport.

The Assam Police have however, refused to issue any official statement on Amritpal’s arrival in Dibrugarh.

Meanwhile, the security cover outside the central jail was beefed up.

Already, a multi-tier security arrangement was in place, but more security personnel were deployed on Sunday.

The general public were not allowed to go near the jail.

Nine other aides of Amritpal Singh, including his close aide Papalpreet and uncle Harjit Singh, have been lodged in the Dibrugarh central jail since last month.

The 30-year-old Waris Punjab De chief who had been on the run since March 18, was arrested on Sunday morning from Rode in Moga district — the native village of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was killed in the Indian Army’s Operation Blue Star in 1984.

Amritpal shot to prominence in February after an armed mob led by him clashed with police and laid siege to a police station near Amritsar, demanding the release of one of their colleagues who had been taken into custody in an alleged kidnapping case.

Six policemen were injured in the bloody clash.

Amritpal case: SGPC lawyers meet 8 people in Assam’s jail

    [ad_1]

Amritsar: Lawyers of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on Monday met the eight people detained in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the stringent National Security Act after they were nabbed following a crackdown by Punjab Police against radical preacher Amritpal Singh and his aides.

The SGPC is pursuing cases of the eight people who have been detained under the NSA.

SGPC member and senior advocate Bhagwant Singh Sialka led the delegation, including advocates Mandeep Singh Sidhu and Rohit Sharma, to Assam.

    MS Education Academy

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami said following the order of the Jathedar of Akal Takht, the cases of youths imprisoned under the NSA at Dibrugarh are being pursued.

He said SGPC’s legal experts have started their work after visiting the ground.

He informed that legal aid is being provided to the eight people detained at Dibrugarh.

He further said the legal team has prepared a further course of action after meeting the arrested youths and officials of the Dibrugarh jail administration.

Sialka said the District Legal Services Authority and Dibrugarh Bar Association along with local lawyers have supported the SGPC legal team in submitting an application to the Dibrugarh jail administration to meet the eight detained youths.

Advocate Mandeep Singh said the detention orders of the youths and other necessary documents have been provided to the SGPC legal team by jail administration, following which further legal proceedings will be continued.

The Punjab Police had sent eight persons, including Daljeet Kalsi and Basant Singh, to the Dibrugarh jail after charging them under the NSA following a crackdown against preacher Amritpal and his aides.

The Jathedar of Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, had recently asked the state government to revoke the detention of some persons under the NSA and demanded that those who have been sent to Dibrugarh jail in Assam should be brought back to Punjab so that law can take its own course.
