  • 39 Indian cities among world’s 50 most polluted: Report

39 Indian cities among world’s 50 most polluted: Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Swiss firm IQAir in its ‘World Air Quality Report’ released on Tuesday ranked India the world’s eighth most polluted country in 2022, dropping from fifth place the previous year. In the list of most polluted cities in the world, out of the 50 cities, 39 are in India.

Chad, Iraq, Pakistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Kuwait, India, Egypt and Tajikistan were the top 10 most polluted countries while Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, and New Zealand met the World Health Organization (WHO) PM2.5 guideline (annual average of 5 Aug/m3 or less).

The data from 131 countries was taken from over 30,000 ground-based monitors, either government or non-government operated.

As per the report, In India, the transportation sector causes 20-35 per cent of the PM2.5 pollution while other sources of pollution are industrial units, coal-fired power plants and biomass burning.

After the two top most-polluted cities, Lahore in Pakistan and Hotan in China, Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi is in third place and Delhi ranked fourth.

Delhi’s PM2.5 level is almost 20 times the safe limit, the report stated.

Delhi has so far been the most polluted capital in the world and the report made a distinction between ‘greater’ Delhi and New Delhi the capital. Both are in the top 10 and the infamous distinction of being the world’s most polluted capital goes to Chad’s N’Djamena.

National Capital’s peripherals– Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad have seen a decline in pollution levels. The report said that there is a 34 per cent decline in Gurugram to 21 per cent in Faridabad if compared to the average PM2.5 levels reported in previous years.

Delhi has seen a decline of eight per cent.

The report said that worldwide, poor air quality accounts for 93 billion days lived with illness and over six million deaths each year.

“The total economic cost equates to over $8 trillion dollars, surpassing 6.1 per cent of the global annual GDP. Exposure to air pollution causes and aggravates several health conditions which include, but are not limited to, asthma, cancer, lung illnesses, heart disease, and premature mortality,” the report said.

According to the report, 31 cities including 10 cities in Uttar Pradesh and seven in Haryana, have seen a steep percentage decline in pollution levels.

“A total of 38 cities and towns have seen a rise in pollution compared to an average of previous years,” stated the report.

As per the report, among the six metro cities, Kolkata was ranked the most polluted after Delhi. However, Chennai was stated to be the cleanest with pollution ‘just’ 5x the WHO’s safe level. The metro cities — Hyderabad and Bengalurua — saw pollution levels uptick over the average since 2017.

  • Unity among Muslims is need of the hour: Maulana Imran Masood

Unity among Muslims is need of the hour: Maulana Imran Masood

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In view of increasing sectarianism in the nation, Iman of Jama Masjid- Bengaluru, Maulana Imran Masood held that Muslims should consider ‘unity’ as their shield to sail through the situation.

The Maulana is serving as an Imam in the Jama masjid of Bengaluru and is a renowned leader who encourages Muslim-Hindu unity while pledging to eliminate hatred building up due to political propaganda in the nation.

The Siasat Daily, in an exclusive interview with the Imam at the Rainbow hotel in Lakdikapul, pulled light on the concept of unity among Muslims.

Hijab ban, Halal controversy, Azaan on loudspeakers row, the Imam deliberated that the issues are nothing but political conspiracies fashioned to distract people from the main purpose of their survival.

“The only way to deal with this challenge is for Muslims to avoid all kinds of petty differences and unity among Muslims is the most essential ingredient for the minorities to survive in the nation with other religions,” stressed the Imam.

Shedding light on the role of Muslims during the election process, the Imam said, “India is a democratic country and each vote counts and hence, no person should trade their vote for anything.”

Reflecting on the issue of Muslims being targeted in the nations in some way or the other, the imam said that education is the key factor in building communal ethics in children.

Stressing the elevating Azaan issue, the maulana said that the call for prayer is given in accordance with the Supreme court guidelines which have not fixed a particular decibel of volume at which the call for prayer must be given.

“Future generations must be taught to stay united for there is no life without unity,” asserted the imam.

Parties working on the principle of secularism are preferred and not parties working with Muslim people in the leader’s seat.

Maulana further stressed that the power of votes should not be underestimated and hence every Muslim has to uplift their fellow mates to encourage each other positive voting spirit.

Concerning the serious situation that Muslims are currently going through and the way false powers are propagating against Islam and Muslims, the imam said, “disagreement in the Ummah is a source of mercy, but it should not be used as a source of chaos.”

Israel detects three new polio cases among children

    [ad_1]

Tel Aviv: Israel has reported three new cases of children infected with polio, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

The cases were detected during an epidemiological investigation after an eight-year-old boy from northern Israel tested positive for the virus earlier this week, Xinhua news agency quoted the statement as saying.

The Ministry added that the three children, who were in close contact with the boy, currently have no clinical symptoms.

A polio outbreak occurred in March 2022 in Israel with the detection of nine cases, prompting the Ministry to conduct an extensive vaccination campaign for people aged 17 and under.

In July, it announced that the spread of the virus had stopped, but the virus was discovered again in recent months in sewage systems across the country.

The Ministry noted that there are currently more than 150,000 children in Israel who have not been vaccinated against the virus.

The infectious polio disease spreads rapidly and can cause paralysis and, on rare occasions, even death.

After hike, LPG cylinder price in Hyderabad highest among metros

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The domestic LPG cylinder price in Hyderabad is the highest among metros in India. After the recent hike in gas rates, it jumped by Rs 50 per cylinder.

On Wednesday, the prices of domestic cooking gas and commercial cylinders have been hiked by Rs 50 and Rs 350.5 per cylinder respectively.

With this hike, the retail price of a domestic LPG gas cylinder in Hyderabad now becomes Rs 1155, while the price for a commercial cylinder is Rs 2325. The second highest is in Kolkata i.e., Rs 1129 per cylinder.

The domestic LPG cylinder prices in metro cities are as follow:

Cities LPG cylinder price (In rupees)
    Hyderabad1155
    Kolkata1129
    Chennai1118.5
    Bengaluru1105.5
    Delhi1103

Why is LPG cylinder price in Hyderabad highest among metros?

The hike in gas prices declared by the central government is the same for entire India. However, the LPG cylinder prices varies based on the states and cities.

Due to local taxes, Hyderabad residents have to pay the highest LPG cylinder price among all metros in India.

In Telangana, the highest rate of gas is in the Nirmal district. The price of a domestic LPG cylinder in the district is Rs 1180 whereas, in Nizamabad, its rate is Rs 1178.50.

UPA gave over Rs 2 lakh cr subsidy in 10 years: Congress

Criticizing the move to hike LPG cylinder price in Hyderabad and other parts of the country, Congress on Tuesday said that the UPA gave Rs 2,14,474 crore subsidy in 10 years to keep the prices of domestic gas under check.

Addressing a press conference here, Congress spokesperson Gaurav Vallabh said, “This was the reason that domestic LPG cylinder price did not cross Rs 500. You will be surprised to know that the same subsidy in the last nine years of the Modi government stood at Rs 36,598 crore.”

The party said that the government is not giving any subsidy, but imposing GST instead. For domestic LPG cylinder, the government has imposed 5 percent GST, while for commercial cylinder, the GST rate is 18 percent.
