Trump’s standing among Hill conservatives dims ahead of ’24

    [ad_1]

    2022 1116 lankford 3200 2

“They’re conservative,” Lankford added of his constituents, “but they’re dealing with personality there as well and are trying to figure out: Where do we go as a nation?”

Lankford is staying neutral in his state, where Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) bested Trump in the 2016 primary. And he’s got plenty of company. Even as the GOP’s right flank earns sway equal to the tea party era, most conservatives aren’t inserting themselves into the brewing clash between Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, an all-but-certain presidential contender bred by the pro-Trump House Freedom Caucus.

Interviews with more than 40 congressional Republicans — including 32 Freedom Caucus members — show a surprising number of Trump’s once-ardent supporters going quiet about whether they back him, despite new polling that shows him widening his primary lead. The small share of conservatives willing to endorse Trump right now suggests that the former president’s power base in the Hill GOP is at a nadir, even as DeSantis and other rivals have yet to ramp up their outreach.

And some congressional conservatives are getting unexpected reactions to their alternative picks.

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), for instance, was one of the 20 doubters who initially blocked Kevin McCarthy from ascending to the speakership even as Trump supported the California Republican through 15 arduous ballots.

Then Norman surprised colleagues last month by backing former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley over Trump. And he, too, was in for a surprise when he informed Trump of his decision.

The former president, who is well known for grudge-holding, “was nice” about Norman’s decision, he recalled in an interview. “‘Do what you have to do. You got a great family.’ And that’s what he said,’’ Norman recounted. He hasn’t heard from Trump since.

Trump has received a quintet of Senate endorsements, with potentially more to come, and is clearly looking to see if his old coalition of allies is willing to rally around him again. He unveiled endorsements from 11 House members in Texas this past weekend — and warned that those on the fence were encouraged not to come to his rally.

Yet overall, the show of support for Trump is far from decisive. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) is DeSantis’ only current backer — not much of a surprise, since DeSantis isn’t running yet — but few Hill conservatives are pushing the Florida governor to stay out of the race.

“I do want DeSantis to run,” said Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), who plans to stay “neutral” in the event her colleague, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), jumps in. “Even if DeSantis and Trump are very close philosophically, there’s definitely a style difference there. And style is important.”

The reasons for the cool reception to Trump are myriad: He left office two weeks after a violent insurrection by his backers, and his meddling in Republican primaries backfired to help Democrats keep the Senate last year. He associates with white nationalists and has seemingly never-ending legal woes. For many Republicans, the need to win after a streak of losses supersedes old loyalties.

The House Freedom Caucus is composed of roughly 35 lawmakers, and about one-third of those members interviewed for this story are publicly supporting Trump again. That camp includes the group’s former chair, Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

Fourteen Freedom Caucus members wouldn’t say where they stand on the primary, either stating they’re undecided as the race takes shape or declining to weigh in outright. The Trump-aligned group’s current leader, Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.), played a central role helping Trump challenge his 2020 loss.

But the Pennsylvanian demurred when asked whom he would back in 2024: “We got a ways to go … I really am just focused on my work” in the House.

Then there’s Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.), a Freedom Caucus member caught on camera waving off Greene as she sought to put him on the phone with Trump during the speakership balloting. Rosendale has no plans to make a presidential endorsement and he sidestepped concerns that a rift with Trump could hurt his chances in the state primary should he decide to challenge Democratic Sen. Jon Tester.

“We’re not supposed to use telephones on the House floor. That’s all I’ve got to say about that,” he said. (When he shrugged off the chance to talk to Trump in January, however, there were no rules governing the House floor.)

Fractures within the Freedom Caucus clearly emerged during the Trump administration, as the majority of the group shifted from libertarian ideology to a more MAGA-centric outlook. Now, some want to return to their former roots — which may well entail a different approach to 2024. One Freedom Caucus member, granted anonymity to speak candidly, described Trump as an unlikely pick.

In addition, the field that’s shaping up is especially awkward in early primary states. Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) cited his ties to Haley and Scott in declining to answer. But Duncan also served in Congress with Mike Pompeo, Kristi Noem, DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence. And he knows Trump, as all Republicans do.

“My relationships with all those people really are more important to me than endorsing — early on — one of them. That could jeopardize my relationships,” Duncan said.

Rep. Russ Fulcher (R-Idaho) declined to address whom he’d support, instead contending it is a “good problem” to have multiple choices. Asked if he feared Trump attacking him if he ultimately backs someone else for president, he shrugged it off.

“He might, because that’s just the way he is,” said the Freedom Caucus member. “But, if he wins, then we all hug again and keep on going.”

Across the Capitol, five out of 49 Republican senators are openly endorsing Trump: Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Eric Schmitt of Missouri, J.D. Vance of Ohio, and Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma. Those on the sidelines at the moment range from Cruz, Trump’s 2016 rival turned ally, to Sen. Ted Budd (R-N.C.), whom Trump pushed to victory in last year’s Senate primary.

Budd at least sounded warm to Trump’s candidacy, expressing “tremendous gratitude for how he helped” in the midterms. Cruz would only say he foresees “a full and vigorous presidential primary, and I am confident it won’t be boring.”

Some on-the-fence Republicans might be more willing to endorse Trump if he went back to talking about the economy. Take Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.), who’s a party barometer of sorts: A gubernatorial candidate and member of the conservative bloc that opposed Mitch McConnell for GOP leader. He also served as Trump’s biggest defender during his 2020 impeachment trial.

”If [Trump] would focus on what was going on pre-Covid, and not try to get the toothpaste back in the tube — which is not going to happen — I think he’s got a strong argument to make,” Braun said.

2 children among three dead as Visakhapatnam apartment collapses

    [ad_1]

Visakhapatnam: Two children and an adult were crushed to death when a three-storeyed residential building collapsed in the small hours of Thursday in Visakhapatnam, a police official said.

At the time of the collapse, eight tenants from three families living on three floors were present in the building. Two of them were children, and both died.

“Suddenly at 1.30 in the morning, the whole structure collapsed,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Sumit Sunil Garud said, sharing the preliminary information said. “Police and fire services responded immediately and with quick action we could rescue five of them.”

Had the police and fire services not attended to the emergency immediately, Garud said, more occupants of the building would have died.

The IPS officer, who spent two hours at the accident site, oversaw the rescue of a woman. Five rescued tenants are undergoing treatment in hospital.

Meanwhile, police booked a case under Section 174 of CrPC (police must enquire and report on the circumstances of death) and are in the process of taking an expert opinion to ascertain the cause of the old building’s collapse.

According to Garud, another building is also being constructed beside the collapsed one.

  • BJP to distribute PM’s ‘Mann ki Baat’ in Urdu among UP madrasas

BJP to distribute PM’s ‘Mann ki Baat’ in Urdu among UP madrasas

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: With an eye on the 2024 general election, the BJP will distribute a compilation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly radio address ‘Mann ki Baat’ translated into Urdu among madrasas and Islamic scholars in Uttar Pradesh in a bid to woo Muslims.

Uttar Pradesh BJP Minority Morcha President Kunwar Basit Ali has compiled 12 episodes of the prime minister’s radio programme for the year 2022.

“Twelve episodes of Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme have been translated into Urdu and will be published as a book. Episodes from January to December 2022 have been included in this. It has been compiled by me and translated by Tabish Farid of Meerut,” Ali told PTI.

“It is expected that the book will be ready and printed during Ramzan. The target is to take this book to one lakh people,” he added.

The book is also set to include congratulatory messages from heads of Islamic educational institutions such as Darul Uloom Deoband and Nadwatul Ulema.

“The book will not be available for sale. It will be distributed as a gift in Muslim-dominated areas of Uttar Pradesh. Workers of the BJP’s state minority cell take this book as a gift to prominent madrasas, Islamic scholars, Urdu teachers and ulemas,” he said.

Ali said the purpose of the exercise is to spread the prime minister’s messages among the Muslim community.

“At many times it happens that the people of the Muslim community are unable to listen to the prime minister’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ which always has a deep message hidden for the betterment of the society,” he said.

In the radio programme, the prime minister often mentions various schemes and initiatives of the government as well as people who have made outstanding contributions in the social sector, Ali said.

“The purpose of publishing this book is that the Muslim community should also be benefitted and be inspired by the messages of the prime minister.”

After organizing conferences to connect Pasmanda Muslims, the BJP is preparing for ‘Sneh Milan – One Country, One DNA’ conferences in the Muslim-dominated Lok Sabha constituencies of western Uttar Pradesh in April.

  • Modi popular among Chinese netizens, nicknamed ‘Modi the immortal’: Article

Modi popular among Chinese netizens, nicknamed ‘Modi the immortal’: Article

    [ad_1]

Beijing: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reverentially called ‘Modi Laoxian’ meaning ‘Modi the immortal’ by Chinese netizens, a rare respectful reference to an international leader, notwithstanding the bitter India-China border row, according to an article published in the US-based strategic affairs magazine The Diplomat.

In the article – ‘How is India viewed in China?’, Mu Chunshan, a journalist known for analysing Chinese social media, especially Sina Weibo, (akin to Twitter in China), also said that most Chinese feel that India led by Modi can maintain a balance among major countries in the world. Sina Weibo has over 582 million active users.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has an unusual nickname on the Chinese internet: Modi Laoxian. Laoxian refers to an elderly immortal with some weird abilities. The nickname implies that Chinese netizens think Modi is different even more amazing than other leaders,” he said.

They point to both his dress and physical appearance, seen as Laoxian-like, and some of his policies, which are different from India’s previous ones, Mu said.

On India’s relations with other major countries, he said, whether it is Russia, the United States, or Global South countries, India can enjoy friendly ties with all of them, which is “very admirable” to some Chinese netizens.

“So the word ‘Laoxian’ reflects the complex sentiment of Chinese people toward Modi, combining curiosity, astonishment, and perhaps a dash of cynicism,” Mu wrote.

“I have been doing international media reports for nearly 20 years and it is rare for Chinese netizens to give a nickname to a foreign leader. Modi’s nickname stands out above all others. Clearly, he has made an impression on Chinese public opinion,” he said.

Besides hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping and former Premier Li Keqiang, since he came to power in 2014, Modi also held two rare informal summits with Xi, 69, in Wuhan and later in Mamallapuram near Chennai, which raised expectations of improvement in the relations between the two Asian giants.

The Sino-Indian relations hit the bottom following aggressive military actions by the Chinese military in eastern Ladakh violating the agreements to resolve the border dispute leading to a nearly three-year-long military standoff.

The two countries have held 17 rounds of high-level military commanders’ talks to resolve the standoff.

India has been maintaining that ties with China cannot be normal unless there is peace in the border areas.

Modi is also well known in China as he interacted with the Chinese public through his account on Sina Weibo which he opened in 2015 and had over 2.44 lakh followers.

However, he quit Weibo in July 2020 after the Indian government moved to ban 59 Chinese Apps to send a “strong message at the border, on the economic front and at a personal level too,” according to BJP general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh.

In his article, Mu says Chinese views of India are very complicated but generally based on a sense of superiority and self-confidence.

Significantly, he writes that the Chinese netizens believe China’s attempts to use its “all-weather ally”, Pakistan as “unrealistic” as the gap between the two South Asian neighbours is “getting wider”, an apparent reference to the political and economic meltdown Pakistan is currently experiencing.

“The facts over the past nine years have proved that China and India have more room for cooperation. For example, China’s trade with India is worth USD115 billion a year far more than China’s trade with Pakistan, which sits at around USD 30 billion”, Mu wrote.

“Of course, China has not forgotten Pakistan. But many Chinese netizens have a realistic view of the two South Asian neighbours. The argument is very sober: The idea of using Pakistan to restrain India is becoming more unrealistic because the gap between Pakistan and India is getting wider”, he said.

He also writes about Chinese apprehension about India’s growing popularity with western countries, especially with the US and New Delhi’s handling of the Ukraine crisis without disrupting its close ties with Russia and America.

“This is just one example of a widespread perception in China: India is the favourite of the West, while China has become the target of the West. How did India manage this? Why is India’s circle of international friends so big?” was the question debated by the Chinese netizens.

Most Chinese people feel a sense of superiority and self-confidence vis-a-vis India and of course, most Chinese people don’t like to see India get too close to the United States, but they also think China and India can still cooperate, the article said.

  • Telangana among seven states to get PM MITRA mega textile parks

Telangana among seven states to get PM MITRA mega textile parks

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: An announcement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday stated that the ‘PM MITRA mega textile parks’ will be set up in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

The PM asserted that they will attract massive investments and create lakhs of jobs. However, he mentioned about the same during his public meeting in Hyderabad in July last year.

“The parks would provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for the textiles sector and be a great example of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make For the World’,” Modi tweeted.

‘”Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel Parks (MITRA) scheme would boost the textiles sector in line with the vision of 5F (Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign),” the PM added.

The Centre’s assistance for these parks, categorised into Greenfield and Brownfield, would be 51 per cent and the balance would have to be borne by the respective State governments.

After the Azamjahi Mill shut down long ago and considering the rich history of Warangal, the Telangana government decided to set up a mega textile park with an allocation of 2,000 acres of land at Shayampet for the same.

Following the announcement, Union minister G Kishan Reddy thanked Modi for announcing a textile park ‘as a gift for Telangana’, adding that the farmers and weaving community would benefit immensely from this venture.

Kishan Reddy also said that he had written to Telangana chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on February 14 last year, requesting him to submit a strong proposal for the scheme.

Modi also lauded the persistent efforts being to make India’s defence sector self-reliant while remarking that the boost to self-reliance in defence also reaffirmed.
