When Sachin picked Laxman as his favourite player among the likes of Dravid, Ganguly

New Delhi: “You are blessed with so much talent. You can see the ball a split second earlier than me…” was how legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar described the batting prowess of his ‘favourite’ former teammate VVS Laxman during the 1999-2000 Australia tour, reveals a new book “Sachin@50: Celebrating a Maestro”.
The story, narrated by former Indian cricketer MSK Prasad in the book, was from a conversation between Prasad, Laxman and Sachin on their favourite players in the then Indian Team touring Australia.
While Prasad, who was also part of the team, said he liked Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly and VVS Laxman; Tendulkar, who was captain of the then Indian team, declared Laxman as his favourite player.

“If you don’t smile and show your teeth, I’ll say you are my favourite player,” said Tendulkar to the always-smiling Laxman who thought the Master Blaster was simply making fun of him.
But Tendulkar wasn’t. He even elaborated on the reasons for picking the stylish middle-order batsman as his favourite player among the likes of Dravid, Ganguly and several others.
“You are blessed with so much talent. You can see the ball a split second earlier than me. God has given you exceptional talent which you are not able to understand,” said Tendulkar as recounted by Prasad in the book, which has who’s and who of the sporting world sharing their experiences with the legend himself.
Tendulkar, dubbed as the ‘God of Cricket’, as per the conversation, said unlike Laxman, god gave him the “minimum talent” which he was “maximising”.
“I have four gears in my batting — defence, push, drive and loft. I understand the conditions and use my logic and perform accordingly. You have so much talent that you can straightway bat on fourth gear. You see the ball so early that you don’t worry about the conditions.

“That way, sometimes you click, and sometimes you fail. The day you realise the value of the first three gears, you will become a legend of the game,” he explained.
A tribute to the global sporting phenomenon, “Sachin@50: Celebrating a Maestro” features essays and pieces by well-known figures, including Tendulkar’s family — wife Anjali Tendulkar and elder brother Ajit Tendulkar — and cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh and Rohit Sharma.
The book, published by Simon & Schuster India, will be officially launched on the occasion of Tendulkar’s 50th birthday on Monday.

5 tourists among 6 injured in Pahalgam accident

Srinagar, Apr 21: At least six persons including 5 tourists were injured after a vehicle skidded off road in Pahalgam area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that 5 tourists and a local driver were injured after their vehicle skidded off road in Pahalgam.

Rahul, Mamata, Kejriwal among politicians who lost Twitter blue tick

New Delhi: Micro-blogging site Twitter on Tursday removed the verified blue tick from many high-profile individuals’ account in India including West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s among others.
The only individual Twitter users who have verified blue checkmarks are those paying for Twitter Blue, which costs USD 8/month via the web and USD 11/month through the in-app payment on iOS and Android.
The other political figures who have lost the blue tick are Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.

Besides them, political parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the Congress also lost their verification badges.
Due to the recent development, several B-town celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt and cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma among others have lost their verified blue ticks from their Twitter accounts.
Earlier it was announced that the microblogging site would remove the verified check-mark status of accounts that Twitter had been verified as notable before Elon Musk’s takeover unless they have subscribed to Twitter Blue or the business-focused Twitter Verified Organizations plan, Variety reported.
Initially, the blue tick served as a way of protecting well-known individuals from impersonation and tackling false information.
Earlier in March, Twitter posted from their official handle, “On April 1st, we will begin winding down our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified checkmarks. To keep your blue checkmark on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue.

Twitter first introduced the blue check mark system in 2009 to help users identify that celebrities, politicians, companies and brands, news organizations and other accounts “of public interest” were genuine and not impostors or parody accounts. The company didn’t previously charge for verification.
Musk launched Twitter Blue with the check-mark badge as one of the premium perks within two weeks of the company’s takeover last year.

India beats China in population; Hyderabad among 10 populous cities in the country

Hyderabad: India has surpassed China to become the most populous country in the world. As per the latest United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report, with a population of 1,428.6 million, India has overtaken China by a difference of 2.9 million.
The report states that 25 percent of India’s population is comprised of children aged 0-14, with 18 percent in the 10-19 age group, and 26 percent belonging to the 10-24 age group. Meanwhile, 68 percent are in the 15-64 age category and only 7 percent are above 65 years.
In contrast, China has 17 percent of the population under 14 years of age, with 12 percent in the 10-19 age group and 18 percent in the 10-24 age group.

Hyderabad among top 10 most populous cities in India
According to the latest Indian census, Mumbai is the most populous city in the country, followed by Delhi. Hyderabad is among the top 10 most populous cities in India.
Hyderabad has a population of 68 lakhs and it covers an area of 650 sq. km on the Deccan Plateau along the banks of the Musi River. The city was established in 1591 by the Qutb Shahi dynasty’s Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah and served as the capital of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh from 1956 to 2014. Since 2014, Hyderabad has been the capital of Telangana state.
As per census data, 64.93 percent of Hyderabad’s population is Hindu, 30.13 percent are Muslim, 2.75 percent are Christian, and 2.19 percent belong to other religions.
China’s population decreased for the first time since 1960
For the first time, India has topped the UN’s list since it began collecting population data in 1950. The report also notes that China’s population decreased for the first time since 1960.
China had imposed a strict “one-child policy” in the 1980s to combat overpopulation fears, but lifted the policy in 2016. It began letting couples have three children in 2021 as the country’s workforce ages and fertility rates decline.

SRINAGAR: A Junior Assistant in Education Department alongside another person were on Wednesday apprehended by a police team, in Sogam area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, over accusation of possession of narcotics.
“During a regular naka check by a team of Police Station Sogam led by SHO Sogam DySP (Prob) Khadim Hussain at Wavoora crossing, a vehicle of the type i10 Grand, bearing V.R. No JK01X 6548 was intercepted. Two individuals, who were in a state of drug-consumption and puffing cigarettes, were found in the vehicle”, reads a statement.
“Upon questioning, they were identified as Mir Bazil, a Junior Assistant in the Education department, son of Manzoor Ahmad Mir resident of Khurhama, Lolab and Ishaq Khan son of Mohd Abdullah Khan, resident of Maidan Pora, Lolab.”
“A search of the vehicle was carried out, and during the process, approximately 109 grams of heroin-like substance, wrapped in a piece of white polythene bag, and some quantity of charas-like substance, wrapped in a piece of blue polythene bag, was recovered from a hole adjacent to the mud-guard of the rear tyre on the left side of the vehicle”, maintains the statement.
“An FIR No. 28/2023 U/S 8 r/w 20,21,29 NDPS Act has been registered in Police Station Sogam and the investigation is currently underway.”
“The interception of the vehicle and the arrest of the two individuals is a significant blow to the drug-peddling network in Lolab area, as the said two individuals were becoming a threat to the lives of the young people of the area”, read the statement further. (GNS)

BJP leader among 2 held with illicit liquor worth Rs 10 lakh

Pilibhit: A BJP leader was among two persons allegedly arrested with illicit liquor worth Rs 10 lakh in the Barkheda police station area of this Uttar Pradesh district on Friday.
According to a statement issued by the Superintendent of Police (SP), a team from Barkheda Police Station, along with the joint team of the excise department recovered a large amount of illicit liquor from a vehicle and arrested two accused.
The two accused have been identified as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district media in-charge Shyam Bihari Bhojwal and Babu, a resident of Gadarpur police station, Kotwali Sadar, district Rudrapur in Uttarakhand.

BJP district president Sanjeev Pratap Singh said Bhojwal is the former district media incharge and added that a report for further action will be taken once the police investigation gets over.

Bhagwat bats for unity among castes and sects

Ahmedabad: Giving the message of unity among different castes and sects, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Friday that “earlier we were one, but we created divisions in the form of castes which were widened by foreigners and for this country, we will once again have to become one”.
Addressing RSS workers here in the programme “Samaj Sakti Sangam” (confluence of social power), Bhagwat remembered Dr B R Ambedkar on his 132nd birth anniversary and said Babasaheb had said that an equality-based society (samta-yukt samaj) will only lead to the development of the country.
“Ambedkar had said that we were defeated by foreign invaders as we were divided,” Bhagwat said.

“Earlier we were one, but we created divisions of castes and such things like sects and the foreigners widened it. Now for the development of the country, we need to be one again,” he said.

Srinagar, Apr 11: Srinagar police on Tuesday said it have busted another prostitution racket in Nowgam area of Srinagar by arrested three persons including a woman.
Srinagar police, in a Tweet, as per the news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO), informed that the sex racket was busted following investigation in Chanpura case.
It said three persons including a woman and her husband have been arrested, while two customers and a sex worker have also been detained.
“Investigation in chanpura case led to busting of another prostitution racket in Nowgam area. 1) Shabir Mir of charlipora nowgam, 2) his wife Shazia Mir & 3) Adil Gulzar Hazar of Soura arrested on spot for operating this racket. 2 customers & a sex worker also detained(all locals),” police tweeted—(KNO)

Woman Among Two LeT Militant Associates Arrested, Arms And Ammunition Recovered: Police

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday claimed to have busted a militant module by arresting two associates of LeT outfit in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district
In a statement, police spokesperson said that on the basis of reliable information, joint team of counter insurgent forces busted a militant module in Pattan by arresting two associates of LeT outfit identified as Farooq Ahmad Parra and Saima Bashir of Sopore.
The statement reads on their disclosure arms and ammunition including one pistol, 2 pistol magazines, 5 pistol rounds, IED and one remote control IED weighing approximately 2 kg were also recovered.
“During their further questioning, they revealed that duo were working with active LeT militant Abid Qayoom Lone of Wussan Pattan”.
A case under sections of Arms and ULA (P) Act stands registered in Police station Pattan and investigation is on. (KNO)
