Ambedkar said reservation cant be given on religious basis: Himanta’s jibe at Congress

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Lashing out at the Congress in poll-bound Karnataka, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that reservation cannot be on the basis of religion but the grand old party still wants to give a reservation to Muslims.

“Babasaheb Ambedkar had said that reservation cannot be given on the basis of religion. This is the basis of our constitution…Today Congress is saying that we will give reservations to the Muslims,” said Sarma in Bengaluru.

Hitting out at Congress for its poll promise to ban the Bajrang Dal in Karnataka, and said that its manifesto “looks like that of Popular Front of India” while alleging that the party is saying so to “appease Muslims”.

“PFI is already banned. Siddaramaiah government withdrew cases against PFI during their tenure. So they (Congress) are saying to ban PFI and Bajrang Dal to appease Muslims. Congress’ manifesto looks like the manifesto of PFI and some fundamentalist Muslim organizations,” Sarma said while speaking to the media.

This comes after the Congress party on Tuesday in its manifesto for the upcoming May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections said it will take “decisive action” as per law including banning organisations like Bajrang Dal, the Popular Front of India and others.

Biswa said that the Implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will ensure gender justice and equal rights for Muslim women in the southern state. Notably, the BJP has promised to implement UCC in Karnataka if the party returns to power.

“Karnataka BJP made a very bold commitment and it will usher a nationwide demand for the implementation of UCC across the country,” Biswa said, adding that nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) is the need of the hour.

The BJP has intensified its final leg of campaigning with top BJP guns holding massive rallies and roadshows in the southern state, the only state in the south belt where the saffron party is holding on to power.
The ruling BJP released its manifesto for the Karnataka elections on Monday.

The Congress party on Tuesday in its manifesto for the upcoming May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections said it will take “decisive action” as per law including banning organisations like Bajrang Dal, the Popular Front of India and others.

“We will take decisive action as per law including imposing a ban on any such organisations, read the Congress manifesto released by the party president Mallikarjun Kharge here.

Karnataka will go to Assembly polls on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Leaders stress on building strong institutions on Ambedkar birth anniversary

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A host of leaders paid tributes to Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, on his 132nd birth anniversary on Friday, with many recalling his efforts to uplift the marginalised sections of society and others stressing the need to build strong institutions and create an egalitarian society.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several others remembered the social reformer, economist and jurist, who went on to become the first law minister of the country.

Prime Minister Modi said in a tweet Babasaheb dedicated his life to the empowerment of the deprived and exploited sections of society. He also shared an audio clip of his earlier remarks on Ambedkar’s life.

    MS Education Academy

At a ceremony in the Parliament complex, President Murmu and the prime minister were joined by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in paying floral tributes to Ambedkar. Birla called him an architect of social transformation who fostered equality, freedom, justice and brotherhood.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid a floral tribute to Ambedkar in Birbhum in West Bengal. “Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar sought to illuminate the nation by kindling the spark within every Indian. He laboured to create a constitution that provides justice, equality, and freedom to every citizen,” he said in a tweet.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he “respectfully remembers and salutes” him on his birth anniversary. “Along with his contribution to the making of the Constitution, his active role in building the institutions of independent India is incomparable. Babasaheb is an inspiration for all of us in building a strong India,” he added.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao unveiled a 125-ft-tall statue of Ambedkar in Hyderabad. Flower petals were showered on the statute from a helicopter. The statue was built using 360 tonnes of stainless steel and 114 tonnes of bronze, at a cost of Rs 146.50 crore.

Born in 1891 in a Dalit family in Mhow, near Indore, in the then Central Province (now Madhya Pradesh), Ambedkar rose from a humble background to become a leading voice of the marginalised people during the freedom struggle and is credited with introducing several social reforms.

BJP chief JP Nadda paid his tribute to Ambedkar at the party headquarters in Delhi. He said Prime Minister Modi is working to fulfil his dream by working for the development and prosperity of all sections of society.

However, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took a swipe at the government, saying the “culture of forcing silence” and branding people “anti-nationals” is a dangerous trend that will finish our democracy and destroy the Constitution. He recalled that Ambedkar had warned about the ills of ‘hero-worship’ or ‘Bhakti’ in the context of Indian politics.

In an article in The Telegraph, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said, “As we honour Babasaheb’s legacy today, we must remember his prescient warning that the success of the Constitution depends on the conduct of the people entrusted with the duty to govern.”

She also said the regime in power is “misusing and subverting” the institutions of the Constitution, and the people must act to defend the Constitution from this “systematic assault”.

“Equality, liberty, fraternity & justice – the universal values Babasaheb Ambedkar championed, will always remain our guiding light & strength! Tributes to the architect of India’s Constitution on his birth anniversary,” said Rahul Gandhi.

BSP president Mayawati said Ambedkar laid the strong foundation of a modern India by giving an ultra-humanist and welfare Constitution. “His life struggle is a ray of hope for crores of poor, labourers, deprived and other toiling people even today,” she said.

In a tweet, she said, “Taking inspiration from him, the Bahujan Samaj Party was established on this day, 14th April, in 1984, to take forward the stalled caravan of self-respect and to unite the people who were divided on the basis of caste, which has set an example of social change and economic liberation, especially in UP.”

Addressing a gathering at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) headquarters, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extolled Ambedkar for laying out a vision for equality and egalitarianism in society. He hailed his pursuit of higher education during the British era when not many Indians thought about getting degrees from institutions such as Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

Ambedkar knew the value of education and its role in lifting society from poverty and bringing equality among people, he added.

Several other chief ministers and governors also remembered Ambedkar’s efforts to make India a developed society.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde garlanded the portrait of Ambedkar at “Varsha”, his official residence in south Mumbai, and greeted the people on the occasion. He later visited Chaitya Bhoomi, the memorial of the chief architect of the Constitution, at Dadar in central Mumbai, and paid tributes.

Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais tweeted, “Respectful tributes to the Architect of Indian Constitution Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on the occasion of his birth anniversary.”

Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararjan, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also paid tributes to Ambedkar.

  • BJP govt weakening Constitution, paying lip service to Ambedkar: Cong

BJP govt weakening Constitution, paying lip service to Ambedkar: Cong

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress accused the BJP-led Centre on Friday of attacking and weakening the Constitution and paying only lip service to its architect, BR Ambedkar.

On Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, senior Congress leader Kumari Selja alleged that incidents of atrocities against the members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) and tribal communities have gone up under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime, and accused the ruling party of weakening the social security of the SCs, Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

She said the Congress is committed towards ensuring social justice for the oppressed communities and promised that it will set up a national council of social justice, introduce a socio-economic caste census and bring a “Rohith Vemula Act” to protect SC, ST and OBC students in educational institutions across the country.

    MS Education Academy

“Although the prime minister, the BJP and the RSS pay lip service to Babasaheb Ambedkar, they are destroying everything he worked to achieve in his life and are attacking the Constitution, weakening the economic position and social security of Dalits and backward classes, and spreading hatred,” Selja told reporters here.

“The Congress is strongly committed to social justice for all communities. In our Raipur resolution, we have committed to systematic efforts, reversing the (Narendra) Modi government’s attack on social justice through measures, including creating a new national council of social justice, conducting a socio-economic caste census along with the census every decade, passing a Rohith Vemula Act to protect SC, ST and OBC students in educational institutions and ensuring an effective implementation of the SC-ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act,” she added.

Alleging that the Constitution drafted by Ambedkar is under attack, the Congress leader said people’s issues are not being discussed in Parliament, even though crores of rupees are being spent on a new Parliament building while preventing the existing one from functioning.

“We cannot talk about any people’s issue — unemployment, inflation or the Adani scam. A budget of Rs 45 lakh crore of public money is passed without any discussion,” she said.

Selja alleged that institutions are being misused and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are being used to target the BJP’s political rivals as 95 per cent of the cases filed by these agencies are against opposition leaders.

“The BJP’s washing machine removes cases against leaders who join that party,” she said.

Claiming that pressure is being exerted on the judiciary, the Congress leader said the law minister has slowly increased his open attacks on the judicial system and now started calling retired judges “anti-national”.

“The law minister himself admitted that a former CJI had written asking for protection from online trolls. We saw the spectacle a few years ago of sitting judges warning of danger to the judiciary,” she said.

Selja said Ambedkar wanted the Constitution to reign supreme, bring equality between people belonging to all castes and communities and the government to work for the welfare of Dalits and all communities oppressed by the caste system.

She also said over the last week, people have seen how the prime minister makes a big “tamasha” of small events, including the online inauguration of a train, visiting a safari, personally giving appointment letters for positions such as train manager, ticket clerk and postal assistant.

Noting that Ambedkar had warned against this kind of hero-worship, she wondered if his last words — “in politics, bhakti is a sure road to degradation and to eventual dictatorship” — may prove prophetic and urged “bhakts” to listen to his wise words.

The Congress general secretary also claimed that cases of atrocities are rising every year under the current government as the crime rate against Dalits and adivasis has gone up by a third.

Referring to data complied by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), she said in 2021, 50,900 crimes were committed against SCs, a 32-per cent increase from 38,670 such incidents recorded in 2015, adding that there were 8,802 crimes against STs in 2021, a 34-per cent increase from 6,568 registered in 2016.

“The vicious statements against religious minorities are only step one on the BJP-RSS agenda, where minorities, Dalits, adivasis, OBCs are reduced to second-class citizens,” Selja alleged.

Dalits are bearing the brunt of the growing economic inequality under this “suit-boot sarkar” as the poor are getting poorer and the rich richer, she said, adding that the poorest 20 per cent Indians have seen their real income fall by nearly 50 per cent and the lower-middle class by 25 per cent, even as the richest 20 per cent have seen a more than 40 per cent growth in their wealth.

Hyderabad: 125 feet Ambedkar statue saw light due to BJP, says Bandi

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Friday demanded that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao apologise to Dalits for what he called betraying the community.

Sanjay said Chief Minister KCR “failed” to fulfill the promise to make a Dalit the first chief minister of Telangana. He alleged that KCR also went back on his promise to give three acres of land to every Dalit family.

Sanjay alleged that the lands of Dalits were being encroached in the state. He was talking to reporters after paying tributes to Dr B. R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary at BJP office.

    MS Education Academy

The BJP leader asked why the chief minister didn’t take part in Ambedkar Jayanti and Vardhanthi programmes all these years. “Didn’t KCR insult Babasaheb by asking to rewrite the Constitution,” asked Sanjay.

He said if KCR was sincere about economic empowerment of Dalits, he should release white paper on Dalit Bandhu scheme. He also wanted to know why the BRS government was taking education and medicine away from the poor without providing funds for fee reimbursement and Arogyasri.

On the installation of the 125-feet statue of Ambedkar in Hyderabad, the BJP leader claimed that the statue has seen the light of the day only because BJP raised the issue. He alleged that KCR was only focused on the Secretariat and had stopped work on the statue.

Terming KCR “anti-Dalit”, Sanjay said KCR had no right to unveil the statue of Ambedkar as he had insulted the late leader by not participating in his birth and death anniversary programmes in the past and by demanding to re-write the Indian Constitution.
