Nitish meets Patnaik, both claim no talks held on alliance for 2024 poll

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar met here for more than an hour on Tuesday but later claimed that there was no discussion on politics or any alliance for the 2024 general election.

Kumar, also the JD(U) supremo, callled on Patnaik, who is the BJD president, at his residence ‘Navin Niwas’ here amid speculation that the two non-BJP and non-Congress leaders will discuss the proposed partnership among the non-BJP parties ahead of the 2024 general election.

The speculation on an emerging alliance at the national level ahead of the poll had its roots in Nitish Kumar’s earlier meetings with AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party leader Akilesh Yadav and others. Kumar had also made it clear that he was in the process of uniting the non-BJP leaders.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is now likely to call on Maharashtra stalwarts Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray later this week, sources in the JD(U) said in Patna.

The Bihar chief minister also had his lunch with Patnaik at his home.

However, both the leaders after the hour-long meeting said that being old friends they talked of matters other than politics fuelling curiosity.

The meeting between the two took place ahead of Patnaik’s proposed three-day trip to Delhi from Wednesday, while the JD(U) in a tweet later claimed that Nitish Kumar has become the leader of the united-Opposition against the BJP-led NDA.

“Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has become the leader of opposition unity, went to Odisha and met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik uniting opposition parties without personal ambition,” the JD(U) tweeted in Hindi.

Patnaik, however, refuted speculations about any political understanding between the two leaders. “No discussion was held on any alliance today. I am delighted that Nitish ji came to Bhubaneswar. We are old friends and colleagues ever since we served in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet,” he told reporters.

He said the Odisha will provide 1.5 acres to Bihar government free of cost in Puri for building facilities for tourists coming for darshan of Lord Jagannath.

He shared some photographs from the meeting and tweeted, “Glad to meet #Bihar Chief Minister Shri @NitishKumar in #Bhubaneswar. #Odisha shares a special bond with Bihar and the people of the neighbouring state. Hope he had a pleasant and fruitful stay in Odisha”.

Kumar said, “Our relation with his (Naveen) father Biju Babu (Patnaik) and Naveen ji is a very old one. We could not meet due to the pandemic. No political discussions were held (during the meeting). We have good relations and there is no need to discuss any politics.”

Earlier in the day, Kumar was welcomed at the Biju Patnaik International Airport by state minister Ashok Chandra Panda and BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra.

Both Kumar and Patnaik lead their respective parties and it was expected that they would discuss politics ahead of the 2024 polls and work towards unity among regional parties.

Kumar is opposed to BJP, with which his party broke its alliance in August 2022, and has claimed that the JD(U) maintains an equal distance the saffron party and Congress.

Banerjee had met Patnaik in March in Bhubaneswar.

Odisha BJP general secretary Prithviraj Harichandan said the meeting between Patnaik and Kumar will not have any impact on the party.

“Naveen Patnaik always does whatever is in his interest. If he thinks that joining the third front will help him, he might do so and if he thinks it won’t, he will not join it,” he said.

BJD MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik said, “Kumar wants a reformative and alternative front in the country. He may discuss the matter with Naveen Patnaik. But Patnaik has already made it cleared that BJD will maintain equidistance from both Congress and the BJP.”

Aurangabad: Amid attempts by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi to expand its footprint in Maharashtra, AIMIM Lok Sabha member Imtiaz Jaleel said they are keeping a close watch on the BRS but it is too early to talk about an alliance with them.

Jaleel was speaking after the BRS, led by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, held its third rally in Maharashtra in Aurangabad on Monday.

“It is too early to say anything about an alliance. One public meeting does not indicate how powerful they are. Let them work and show some results at the ground level. We have to see what response they get in Maharashtra. This question should be asked after a few months,” he said.

In politics discussions keep happening: Anurag Thakur on BJP-NCP alliance

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Amid the speculation regarding a possible alliance between the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Union Minister Anurag Thakur said here on Tuesday that in politics “discussions keep happening.”

“In politics, discussions keep happening…some news should be enjoyed,” he told reporters.

Responding to the meeting of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray with Congress leader KC Venugopal, Thakur said people will never accept the “Mahathagbadhan”.

    MS Education Academy

“All corrupt parties are trying to take each other’s help. But people have never accepted this ‘Mahathagbadhan’ and they never will. Because their whole identity is without any policy, leader or leadership. They (Opposition) are just trying to cover up their corruption, prevent themselves from going to jail and keep their political existence alive,” the minister said.

He also hit out at the Opposition parties who are complaining about the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.

“When these mafia used to kill common people, businessmen, then none of these leaders gave any statements. The mafia used to get protection from the previous governments. The question arises why all these leaders are making statements now,” Thakur added.

Gangster-turned politician Atiq Ahmed, and his brother, Ashraf were killed by three assailants, who posed as mediapersons, on Saturday night, while they were being taken for medical checkup in Prayagraj, UP.

In wake of this incident, several opposition parties have been attacking the UP government flagging concerns regarding the law and order situation in the state.

Talking about his tour to Palghar, Thakur said that he has the responsibility of four Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra.

“I have full faith that in the coming elections, the people will give their blessings to the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance,” he added.

Hanuman Beniwal asks Sachin Pilot to form new party, offers alliance

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) chief Hanuman Beniwal on Tuesday asked Congress leader Sachin Pilot to form a new party and forge an alliance with him for the assembly polls due later this year.

Beniwal said he is open to form alliance with any party against the Congress and the BJP.

On Tuesday, Pilot opened a new front against Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot by sitting on a day-long fast against the Rajasthan government ‘inaction’ in cases of alleged corruption filed during the previous BJP rule. The Congress state unit had warned Pilot that the fast would be considered “anti-party activity” but he went ahead with it anyway.

    MS Education Academy

Pilot and Gehlot have been at loggerheads since the Congress formed government in the state in December 2018.

“I have suggested earlier also that if Sachin Pilot forms his party, then RLP is ready for alliance for the elections,” Beniwal told reporters.

“I can only give suggestions. If he forms the party, we will do an alliance. If he does not make his party, then it is his wish. Our doors are open for alliance with any party against Congress and BJP,” the Nagaur MP said.

A Jat leader, Beniwal said in the last assembly election, 80 lakh votes out of the 4 crore were against Congress and BJP, and this number can go up to 2 crore if all anti-Congress and anti-BJP parties come together in the state.

Beniwal contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in alliance with BJP on Nagaur seat and won it.

In December 2020, he announced his split from NDA over the new farm laws and supported the farmers movement. His party has three MLAs in the House of 200.

Pawan Kalyan meets Nadda, no clarity yet on alliance

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan on Tuesday met BJP national President J. P. Nadda in New Delhi but said more talks were required to decide on the electoral alliance for the next year’s elections in Andhra Pradesh.

On the second day of his visit to the national capital, the Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader met Nadda and discussed the latest political situation in Andhra Pradesh. JSP Political Affairs Committee Chairman Nadendla Manohar was also present.

After the meeting, Pawan Kalyan told media persons that from the beginning, they were looking for stability with regard to Andhra Pradesh. He said it would be difficult to say at this stage to what extent they have clarity with the BJP. He, however, said they were moving ahead with the goal of coming to power.

    MS Education Academy

“Our agenda is a YSRCP-free Andhra Pradesh. BJP’s agenda is also the same. We discussed the issue of making Andhra Pradesh YSRCP-free from all angles,” he said.

Pawan Kalyan hoped that the talks he held with the BJP leaders during the last two days would yield good results in future.

The JSP leader said there would be a plan to free people of Andhra Pradesh from the rule of the YSRCP. He said their party’s preference is to see that anti-YSRCP votes are not divided.

Pawan Kalyan said JSP was trying to strengthen itself and BJP should take organisational decisions to strengthen itself. He said he discussed with Nadda the anti-constitutional rule, corruption, and clashes in Andhra Pradesh.

The JSP leader is likely to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and some other leaders on Wednesday.

  • Only BJP national leadership can decide on political alliance in TN: Palaniswami

Only BJP national leadership can decide on political alliance in TN: Palaniswami

    [ad_1]

Chennai: AIADMK General Secretary K. Palaniswami on Monday said that only the BJP’s national leadership can decide on the alliance in the state for the Lok Sabha elections next year.

Interacting with media persons at Salem, the AIADMK leader’s comment came following state BJP leader K. Annamalai’s “interpretation” of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement as it had “some nuances”. Even as Union Minister of state for Information and Broadcasting and BJP’s former state chief, L. Murugan has said that the alliance with the AIADMK would continue, Annamalai said that as of now the alliance was intact but elections for 2024 Lok Sabha are far off. He had also said that those who knew Hindi well can “interpret” Shah’s speech.

Palaniswami’s statement was a clear message to the state BJP leadership that he would be directly dealing with their national leadership and not with them. The central BJP leadership wants a few seats from Tamil Nadu in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and does want the AIADMK as its alliance partner.

    MS Education Academy

It is also clear that without an alliance with the AIADMK, the BJP will not get any seat in Tamil Nadu and the central leadership of the party cannot afford this.

Palaniswami, when asked on BJP leader Nainar Nagendran’s statement that he was invited to rejoin AIADMK by him, confirmed it, adding: “Not only Nainar Nagendran but all leaders who had quit the AIADMK party should rejoin it.”

  • Opposition alliance: Mamata, Akhilesh likely to meet in Kolkata

Opposition alliance: Mamata, Akhilesh likely to meet in Kolkata

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav are likely to meet in Kolkata on Friday to discuss opposition unity for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Trinamool Congress sources said.

According to the sources, the two leaders, at the meeting at Banerjee’s residence at Kalighat in south Kolkata, are likely to discuss possibilities of having a grand opposition alliance against the BJP but without involving Congress in that initiative.

“Akhilesh Yadav will be attending a national working committee of his party at a hotel in Kolkata on Friday. After attending that meeting, he is likely to go to the Chief Minister’s residence at Kalighat at around 5 p.m. Before that on the same afternoon, the chief minister has convened a meeting of the core committee of her party at 3 p.m. which will also be attended by Trinamool Congress’s national General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee,” said a senior member of the West Bengal cabinet who refused to be named.

Last week, leaders of eight opposition parties, including Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi complaining that the central agencies like Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate are specially targeting the opposition parties in the country in a biased manner. However, there was no signatory from Congress or the Left parties in that letter.

On Monday on the occasion of the last day of the extended budget session of the West Bengal Assembly, a motion was passed condemning the hyperactive role of the central agencies in West Bengal. Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay observed that if the central agencies decide to take any action against any member of the house, the office of the Speaker should be intimated first. However, when that motion was passed none of the opposition BJP legislators were present within the house.
