UP: Advocate held after woman alleges rape

    [ad_1]

Agra: A senior advocate in Agra has been arrested by the New Agra police for allegedly raping a woman.

The victim threatened suicide if no action was taken against the advocate, the police said.

The victim alleged that the advocate raped her on multiple occasions, made obscene videos of the act and also extorted Rs 40 lakh from her.

She claimed she had approached the police many times but when no action was taken. Later she went to the Police Commissioner to narrate her ordeal.

The advocate’s phone had been stolen a few months back and videos and photos of his intimate moments with several women recorded on the phone, had gone viral on social media.

One of those women who said she was sexually exploited by the advocate, approached Agra Commissioner Preetinder Singh and said the advocate had called her to his house on January 4 and raped her after threatening to defame her by making her obscene videos viral.

Interestingly, the advocate had already filed a complaint against the woman at Sikandra police station, accusing her of demanding Rs 2 crore from him. The Sikandra police are already investigating this complaint.

The woman told reporters, “I had a dispute with my husband following which I came in contact with the accused as he represented me in court.”

She said during the lockdown, the advocate had started visiting her house and one day he moved into her house saying that he had a dispute with his wife and he wanted a place to stay for a few days.

During this period, the advocate raped her several times and also made obscene videos saying that a lot of money could be earned by selling these videos. Apart from this, the woman also alleged that the advocate took Rs 40 lakh from her to contest the election, which he is yet to return.

DCP Vikas Kumar said that the victim has accused the advocate of rape and other criminal offenses and the police have registered a case against him. The matter is being investigated and the accused has been taken into custody.

Police Commissioner Preetinder Singh said that the woman appeared before him and threatened that if no action was taken against the advocate, she would be forced to commit suicide.

P T Usha alleges security threat in her academy; breaks down before media

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram/New Delhi: Legendary athlete and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P T Usha on Saturday broke down before the media alleging that illegal constructions were being carried out at her academy campus in Kozhikode district and strangers were trespassing into the property posing a security threat to the inmates.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, she said those at the Usha School of Athletics had been facing such harassment and security issues for some time and it has intensified after she became the Rajya Sabha Member.
Usha had been nominated to the Upper House by the BJP in July 2022.

The “sprint queen” appealed to the Left government in Kerala and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to intervene into the issue and take immediate steps to stop the alleged encroachment and trespassing into the campus and ensure the safety of women athletes there.”Of the 25 women athletes in the Usha schools, 11 were from north India. It is our responsibility to ensure their safety. I submitted a written complaint to the Chief Minister in this regard,” she said.

A teary-eyed Usha also said waste is being dumped on a large scale on the campus, which is also facing threat from the drug mafia but the local panchayat was not letting the academy management to construct a compound wall.

“An illegal construction was made just in the middle of the campus by someone and when we asked, they said they had the approval of the panchayat authorities for it. The school management also had to suffer rude behaviour when they questioned this encroachment,” she said.

Usha said the 30-acre land, where the Usha School of Athletics is located, was handed over to them by the previous Oommen Chandy led-Congress government in the state for 30 years on lease.

Asked whether those at her academy were facing harassment and ill-treatment after she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the BJP, she said each political party had the habit of considering her as a member of its political rival.

“The Congress would say I am a CPI(M) sympathiser while the Marxist party would say I have an affiliation to the BJP.
“I have no politics and I used to help everyone in all possible ways,” she added.

  • AAP alleges BJP got MCD budget passed ‘unethically’ through officials

AAP alleges BJP got MCD budget passed ‘unethically’ through officials

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday accused the BJP of “backstabbing” Delhiites by making officials “unethically” pass the budget of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) even before the elections of mayor and deputy mayor could take place and demanded that the budget be withdrawn.

However, a senior MCD official said the budget had not been passed.

AAP Chief Spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed that they learnt through newspaper reports that the budget had been passed by the MCD and since this was the objective, the elections of the mayor and deputy mayor were deliberately delayed.

“The budget of the MCD is a very important document that gives the detailed breakup of how much money the elected government hopes to spend in the fulfillment of its promises. This is where all the planning of the team is reflected and then work begins in mission mode to deal with the problems that the people of the city are facing.

“But what has happened now is the betrayal of the citizens of Delhi by the BJP. Despite losing the elections to the Aam Aadmi Party, the BJP-ruled central government has illegally passed the budget of the MCD through officials…,” he said.

The AAP won 134 wards in the MCD polls in December while the BJP won 104 wards.

“The bureaucrats of the MCD who have passed the budget should be asked to fight the MCD polls the next time. This is a betrayal of the people of Delhi. It is AAP that has been elected by the people to run the MCD, but the people passing the budget are bureaucrats of the MCD, what sense does this make?” he said.

Accusing the BJP of using similar tactics wherever it loses polls, he said it uses governors to obstruct the works of the elected governments.

“They have always said that ‘Delhi is not a full state’ and tried to obstruct all the developmental works of the Aam Aadmi Party. But they are doing the same in Tamil Nadu and Telangana, where the governors have tried to overshadow the elected governments. The Congress party also until now blamed the AAP for not working with the central government, but look at what their MLAs are doing in other states,” he said.

Citing examples of states such as Telangana and Tamil Nadu, he alleged the “dirty politics of the BJP” has led to the derailment of key political institutions in the country.

“One of the key reasons, after the partition in 1947, India went on to become a robust nation and Pakistan lies in such shambles is the importance these two countries gave to political institutions in their respective country. In India, key institutions such as the Supreme Court, the elected government and its role were formed and given importance. But now the BJP and its leaders have made a mockery of these institutions and this is something that we will strongly fight against,” he said.

Senior party leader Dilip Pandey echoed similar sentiments and accused the BJP of bypassing the elected government of Delhi and passing the budget before the mayor’s election. He demanded that the budget be withdrawn.

“BJP has forcefully passed the budget before the mayor’s election. They must withdraw this budget,” he said.

A senior MCD official denied the allegations.

“No such development has taken place. I do not know where this has come from. No budget has been passed,” he said.

Another official also said that budget had not been passed. “There was a discussion recently but it is wrong to claim that budget has been passed,” he said.

  • Encroachment Drive Another UAPA For J&K People, Alleges Mehbooba

Encroachment Drive Another UAPA For J&K People, Alleges Mehbooba

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday alleged that the encroachment drive launched by the government is another UAPA for the people in Jammu & Kashmir, terming the step a part of corruption practice as under the influence of this drive, the government wants money from rich and vote from the poor.

Addressing a news conference here, the former chief minister said that the drive to retrieve the land is being used as a weapon against the people of J&K to uproot them, suppress and harass them and also make them homeless. “It is another UAPA for the people, otherwise China has encroached our 20000 sq km land, if the government is serious then let the encroached land be retrieved from China first,” she said.

Quoting Mehbooba news agency KNO reported that there are some people who possess the land since Maharajas rule and their land properties are also being demolished, adding that first the government created rift between the religious communities and now it is making attempts to create a rift between poor and rich class through this drive.

However, she said that such measures cannot be stopped until and unless the people from J&K and Ladakh are not united. “The people here in Kashmir are not being allowed to hit the streets.

The people were even trying to participate in Bharat Jodo Yatra in large number, but they were not allowed. The government has created a situation where the people are not being allowed to come out. The people of Ladakh have united, but until and unless Jammu’s Dogra and Kashmiri people don’t get united, these measures cannot be stopped,” she said.

“Jammu people reacted yesterday, but people in Kashmir can’t do so as there is NIA, ED and other agencies behind Kashmir. How would it be possible that the people will come out to react over the issue,” she said, adding that these drives are part of a massive corruption here as they want to get money from the rich and vote from the poor. “The poor are being asked to vote against their land and the rich are being asked to meet some officials in this regard,” she said.

Mehbooba also said that if the government is serious in retrieving the land; let it start from Governor House, B B Cant here.

Asked about the budget presented today in parliament, Mehbooba said that there was nothing new in today’s budget as the financial plan by the incumbent government is being made for the benefits of some capitals and businessmen. “The taxes being collected should have been used for the welfare of people, but the budget is being made for some businessmen only. The situation is such that the poor are getting poorer, the free ration quantity has been reduced to four kilograms,” she added.

  • Rahul Gandhi alleges security lapse in Bharat Jodo Yatra

Rahul Gandhi alleges security lapse in Bharat Jodo Yatra

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that police arrangement “completely collapsed” during Bharat Jodo Yatra on Friday in Jammu and Kashmir and he had “to cancel” his walk.

Senior Congress leaders also alleged that security during had been “mishandled by concerned agencies” on Friday. However, Jammu and Kashmir Police dismissed the allegations of security lapse in the Bharat Jodo Yatra which entered the Valley on Friday.

The Police said steps had been taken to ensure the best possible security for the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra and organisers and managers did not intimate about a large gathering from Banihal joining the Yatra, which thronged near the starting point.

BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia accused Rahul Gandhi of making misleading allegations against the security agencies.

“It has become Rahul Gandhi’s habit to make baseless allegations. He has made wrong allegations against Kashmir Police. It appears that cheap politics is being practiced,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi, who briefly addressed a press briefing at Khanabal in Anantnag, said there was a large crowd and it is important that the police manage it.

“This morning, we had quite a large crowd that had gathered and we were looking forward to walking on the Bharat Jodo Yatra, but, unfortunately, the police arrangement completely collapsed and the police people, who were supposed to manage the crowd and hold the rope, were nowhere to be seen,” Gandhi said.

“So, my security people were very uncomfortable with me walking further on the yatra. So, I had to cancel my walk. The other yatris, of course, did the walk. I think, it is important that the police manage the crowd, so that we can do the yatra. It is very difficult for me to go against, what my security people are recommending,” he added.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration said that the size of the crowd was larger than planned.

Addressing a press conference, RK Goyal, Additional Chief Secretary (FC), Home Department of Jammu and Kashmir, said the government is acutely mindful of security concerns and all arrangements have been made to ensure the best possible security for the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra.

“The size of the crowd was larger than planned which led to the pressure on the available security resources and created the impression that security arrangements were not in place. However, 15 companies of paramilitary forces and 10 companies of J-K police were deployed,” said Goyal.

He further said a large portion of the crowd from the Banihal side who were supposed to have returned to Banihal rushed to the Kashmir side.

“Contrary to arrangements worked out between Bharat Jodo yatra organizers and security establishment, a large portion of the crowd from Banihal side who were supposed to have returned to Banihal rushed to Kashmir side,” he said.

“The size of the crowd was larger than planned which led to the pressure on the available security resources & created the impression that security arrangements were not in place. However, 15 companies of paramilitary forces & 10 companies of J-K police were deployed,” he added.

Dismissing the Congress allegations, Kashmir Zone Police said that only authorized persons who were identified by organisers were allowed on the route of the yatra.

The police said that the organizers of the yatra did not inform about the large gathering from Banihal.

“Only authorised persons as identified by organisers and frisked crowd was allowed inside towards the route of Yatra. Organisers and managers of BJY did not intimate about large gathering from Banihal joining the Yatra, which thronged near the starting point,” Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet.

The police said that full security arrangements were in place. “Full security arrangements were in place including 15 Coys of CAPFs and 10 Coys of JKP, comprising of ROPs and QRTs, route domination, lateral deployment and SFs were deployed for high-ridge and other deployments”.

“JKP was not consulted before taking any decision on discontinuation of Yatra after conducting 1 km yatra by organizers. Rest of yatra continued peacefully. There was no security lapse at all. We will provide foolproof security,” the police added.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accused the government of playing with security of Congress leader.

“Politics has its place but by playing with the security of Rahul Gandhi in the Kashmir valley, the government has stooped to its lowest level. India has already lost Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, any government or administration should desist from doing politics on such matters,” he said in a tweet.

Party leader KC Venugopal alleged that security had been “mishandled by concerned agencies”.

“For 15 mins, there have been no security officers with the Bharat Jodo Yatra here. This is a serious lapse. Rahul Gandhi and other yatris can not walk without security,” Venugopal told the media.

“The sudden withdrawal of security personnel from the D-area has caused a serious security breach at the Bharat Jodo Yatra at Banihal, Kashmir. Who ordered this? The authorities responsible must answer for this lapse and take appropriate steps to prevent such incidents in future,” Venugopal tweeted.

Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra, which is in its final leg in Jammu and Kashmir, resumed on Friday morning from the National Highway-44, Banihal Railway station, in the UT’s Ramban district.

Security was tightened in the area in the wake of the recent twin blasts on the outskirts of Jammu city on January 22 which rocked a busy locality in Narwal leaving atleast nine people injured.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra, which started in Kanyakumari on September 7, will conclude on January 30 in Srinagar after covering 3,970 km, 12 states and two Union territories.

US’s Hindenburg Research alleges fraud in Adani group’s dealings

    [ad_1]

Hindenburg Research disclosed short positions in the Adani Group on Wednesday, accusing the conglomerate of the improperly wide use of businesses established in offshore tax havens and expressing worry about excessive debt levels.

The revelation, which comes just days before Adani Enterprises’ (ADEL.NS) $2.5 billion share sale, sent Adani group businesses’ shares tumbling.

It also said that seven Adani listed firms had an 85% downside on a fundamental basis because to what it dubbed ‘sky-high valuations’.

Hindenburg, a well-known U.S. short-seller, stated key listed firms in the group headed by billionaire Gautam Adani have ‘significant debt’ which had put the entire company on a ‘precarious financial footing’.

The firm published an investigative document titled ‘Adani Group: How The World’s 3rd Richest Man Is Pulling The Largest Con In Corporate History‘ and revealed findings of their two-year investigation presenting evidence that the Rs 17.8 trillion worth Adani group has engaged in a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades.

According to the report, Gautam Adani, the Adani Group’s founder and chairman, has a net worth of about $120 billion, which he has increased by more than $100 billion in the last three years, primarily as a result of stock price growth in the group’s seven most important publicly traded companies, which have increased by an average of 819 percent during that time.

  • IUML alleges its innocent workers being targeted in name of action against PFI

IUML alleges its innocent workers being targeted in name of action against PFI

    [ad_1]

Kozhikode: The Indian Union Muslim League, a key ally of the Congress-led UDF in Kerala, on Sunday alleged the properties of its innocent workers were attached by the state government as part of the recovery proceedings initiated by it against the arrested leaders of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI).

The properties of the arrested PFI workers in Kerala are being attached in connection with the damage to public property, in violence, during a hartal called by the outfit in last September.

The recovery proceedings against those involved in the violence were initiated two days after the Kerala High Court expressed displeasure over the government’s delay in executing its order in connection with it.

Accusing the government of “hunting the innocent workers of IUML” in the name of action against the PFI, senior party leader P K Kunhalikutty alleged that it is being done to “save the real culprits involved in the violence” during the hartal.

“The government should make it clear from where they have got such a list (for attachment process). Various representatives of people, those who are actively working in other political parties and people who don’t have any criminal cases are all being targeted. The real complaint is against a particular organisation. But now, we suspect that innocent people are being targeted in order to save the real culprits (involved in violence),” Kunhalikutty told reporters.

IUML state general secretary P M A Salam alleged that innocent workers of the party were being targeted by the state government in the name of the court-ordered action against errant PFI leaders.

The IUML leaders said the issue will be raised in the state Assembly session beginning on Monday.

Meanwhile, state Revenue Minister K Rajan on Sunday said the attachment of the properties of arrested leaders of the PFI will be completed by Monday. He said the attachment of properties of those who damage public property can be done only on court’s direction.

The minister said a report detailing the attachment process will be submitted before the High Court on Monday.

“The revenue recovery process of attaching the properties belonging to the now-banned PFI leaders will be completed by Monday. The attachment process is being done as directed by the High Court. A report in this regard will be submitted before the high court on Monday,” Rajan told the media in Kochi.

He said it was being done under various provisions of The Revenue Recovery Act.

The state Revenue Department had on Friday initiated a state-wide attaching properties of arrested leaders of the PFI as part of the recovery proceedings in connection with the damage to public property, in the violence, during a hartal called by the organisation in September last.

The PFI leaders are accused in the case connected with the hartal called by the organisation against the nation-wide raids on PFI offices and arrest of its leaders following its ban.

The high court had on January 18 directed the state government to complete the recovery and submit a district-wise report by January 23.

It had also said there was no need to issue notices prior to carrying out the recovery proceedings.

The court had expressed displeasure over the delay as the state government last month had assured to complete the recovery by January 15.

The government had on November 7, 2022 told the court that a loss of Rs 86 lakh was incurred due to the damage to property during the violence in the state-wide hartal.

The government had also submitted that a loss of Rs 16 lakh was suffered by private persons during the violence.

The State police have registered a total of 361 cases and arrested 2,674 people, it had said then.

Earlier, the High Court had asked the banned PFI and its ex-State general secretary Abdul Sathar to deposit Rs 5.2 crore with the Home Department towards damages estimated by the KSRTC and the state government in connection with the hartal-related violence, saying they must be held accountable for it.

Sathar, when he was the State general secretary of the outfit, had called for the hartal against the nation-wide raids and arrest of its leaders, and then allegedly absconded.

Hours after the PFI was banned, he had issued a statement saying the outfit had been disbanded in the wake of the Home Ministry’s decision and subsequently, he was arrested.
