    During the holy month of Ramadan and the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, the King Abdulaziz International Airport handled more than 4.4 million passengers.

    Hyderabad: In one of the biggest catches in recent times, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials on Monday caught a woman who was in possession of 5.90 kilograms of heroin valued at Rs. 41.3 crore at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA).

    According to DRI officials, the female passenger, an Indian national, arrived from Malawi to Hyderabad via Doha on Sunday.

    “On examination of the checked-in baggage of the passenger resulted in recovery of 5.90 kg of creamy white powder granules in transparent packets, concealed within false cavities of the suitcase. On testing with the narcotics field-testing kits, the substance tested positive for “Heroin”, a narcotic drug covered under the NDPS Act, 1985,” said the DRI said.

    The contraband has been seized and the passenger has been arrested, after which she was remanded to judicial custody under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985. Further investigation is underway.

    New Delhi: Amid unrest in parts of Manipur, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has taken various measures to help air passengers while airlines have waived rescheduling and cancellation charges for flights to and from the capital city of Imphal.

    Curfew was relaxed on Sunday in parts of Manipur which saw ethnic rioting over the last few days.

    According to a civil aviation ministry official, the Airports Authority of India is coordinating with the state government to transport stranded passengers from the airport to the city under escort. A help desk has also been set up with effect from May 4.

    The help desk counter is provided with an AAI LAN internet facility to print tickets as internet services are unavailable in the state, as per the official.

    The official added that there were 10,531 passengers at Imphal airport and the total flight movements handled were 108 till May 6, including 50 defence movements and 6 additional flights.

    Air India and IndiGo have waived fees for rescheduling/cancelling all their flights to and from Imphal from May 4 to 7.

    In a release on Sunday, Air India said it operated special flights to and from Imphal on May 6 and 7. IndiGo, on Saturday, said it operated two special flights from Imphal to Kolkata.

    Hyderabad: Custom officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Thursday caught a passenger who was smuggling gold and seized 679 grams of gold from him.

    The passenger who arrived by flight from Riyadh in the afternoon had concealed the gold in the form of four capsules and concealed it in his rectum. On suspicion, the customs officials checked him and recovered the gold.

    The gold seized is valued at Rs 42,26,775. The alleged smuggled gold was seized and further investigation is in progress.

    Hyderabad: Foiling a smuggling bid, Hyderabad Customs seized gold worth Rs 16.5 lakh from two passengers at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport who were coming from Dubai on Tuesday.

    Based on passenger profiling, the Customs Air Intelligence team of Hyderabad Customs intercepted two passengers who arrived from Dubai by flight no EK-526 which landed at 8 am on Tuesday.

    On searching the bags of the passengers, it was found that gold was concealed inside chocolates which were wrapped inside chocolate covers. A total of 13 small cut pieces of gold were found inside the chocolates carried in the carton box. The gold seized weighed around 269 gm having a value worth Rs 16.5 lakh.

    Damascus: Israeli missiles hit the international airport and several military sites in the Syrian province of Aleppo, killing one soldier and injuring seven others, the army said in a statement on Tuesday.

    The attack was carried out just before midnight, hitting the airport and a number of military positions in the countryside of Aleppo, it said, adding that two civilians were among the wounded, reports Xinhua news agency.

    The international airport of Aleppo as well as that of the capital Damascus had been attacked earlier by Israel and went out of service for days.

    The Britain-based watchdog stopped short of giving more details but said the attack is the 16th of its kind since the beginning of 2023.

    Mumbai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted a gold smuggling racket and arrested 18 Sudanese women as well as an Indian woman with 16.36 kg of the yellow metal in paste form valued at Rs 10.16 crore at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here, an official said on Tuesday.

    In a follow up search at related premises 1.42 kg of gold valued approximately at Rs 85 lakh along with foreign currency worth Rs 16 lakh and Indian notes of Rs 88 lakh were also recovered, he said.

    Based on specific intelligence that gold in paste form is going to be smuggled into India by a syndicate of passengers travelling from the UAE to Mumbai on Monday, DRI officials mounted a surveillance at the city airport, the official said.

    Passengers suspected to be part of the syndicate travelling in three flights were identified and intercepted by a team of the DRI at the airport, he said.

    During their search, the DRI recovered 16.36 kg of gold in paste form, gold cut pieces and jewellery, collectively valued at Rs 10.16 crore, said the official.

    Eighteen women from Sudan carrying the smuggled gold and an Indian woman who was coordinating the movement of the passengers were arrested, he said.

    Most of the recovered gold was found concealed on the body of the suspect passengers, making it extremely difficult to detect the precious metal, said the official, adding further probe was underway.
