Mumbai: Man accused of smoking, unruly behaviour on Air India flight gets bail

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A 34-year-old US citizen booked for allegedly smoking on board an Air India flight and unruly behaviour towards the crew was granted bail by a court here on Monday, police said.

The passenger was found smoking in the lavatory of London-Mumbai flight AI130 on March 10 and behaved in an unruly manner with the crew after they were alerted by the smoke alarm and threw the cigarette from his hand, the official said.

The airline officials handed him over to police when the flight landed in Mumbai, he said.

“The man, who is of Indian origin and holds a US passport, was produced in Andheri court and was granted bail on a surety of Rs 20,000. He will be released once he deposits this amount,” the Sahar police station official said.

He was charged under section 336 (whoever does any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life or the personal safety of others) and other provisions of Indian Penal Code and Aircraft Act, the official added.

  • Trump continues to suck the air out of the GOP primary

Trump continues to suck the air out of the GOP primary

    [ad_1]

    20230304 cpac trump 18 francis 2

While Trump’s approval ratings may be slipping and Republican voters tell pollsters they are willing to look elsewhere, a series of recent developments has kept the party fixated on him and the scandals that defined his time and office. Washington D.C. and the largest conservative news outlet have spent days reliving the Jan. 6 riot. And the specter of a Trump indictment in New York portends an early primary season spent relitigating his record.

“There’s no question he’s the giant in the middle of the room, and other people will define themselves in comparison to him,” said Whit Ayres, a longtime Republican pollster.

In recent days, Trump said he will “absolutely” stay in the race if he is indicted and that it would likely “enhance my numbers.” Far from distancing himself from the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 — a general election liability with independents and pro-democracy Republicans — Trump has suggested pardoning some Jan. 6 defendants and recently collaborated on a song with some of them. More traditionalist Republicans winced at that — and again when Fox’s Tucker Carlson aired footage downplaying violence at the Capitol.

“Just reliving the worst moment of the Trump presidency is probably not exactly what the doctor ordered for 2024,” Ayres said.

For any other presidential candidate or any down-ballot Republican next year, said one Republican strategist granted anonymity to discuss the dynamics of the campaign frankly, the “huge risk” is that “we have to talk about Jan. 6 on the campaign trail.”

“God, I don’t want to be on this side of that issue,” he said.

The primary was always going to be, first and foremost, about the former president — who remains, despite his foibles, the frontrunner in the 2024 field. But after a less-than-red-wave midterm and the first few lackluster weeks of Trump’s campaign, it appeared he might not singularly set the terms of the debate. It was time for a “new generation,” Haley, the former ambassador to the United Nations, said when she launched her campaign. Republicans, said New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu — a potential candidate — would not choose “yesterday’s leadership.”

The problem for Republicans is that Trump is making it impossible to run anything other than yesterday’s campaign.

In Washington, Carlson’s relitigating of the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol on Fox News forced Republicans to answer new batteries of questions about an event they’d been eager to forget — reminiscent of the Trump tweets they’d been forced, awkwardly, to respond to throughout his term. It sparked intraparty debates about whether the insurrection had, in fact, been essentially peaceful and led to accusations that those in the party who called it a dark day were ideological squishes.

Then came news that Trump had been invited to testify before a New York grand jury investigating his involvement in hush money payments during the 2016 campaign, raising the prospect of a bombshell criminal case that would again keep Trump as a central litmus test for the party: would fellow Republicans decry the prosecution or turn on the former president?

“Ignore it, deflect it all you want,” said Mike Noble, the chief of research and managing partner at the Arizona-based polling firm OH Predictive Insights. “This is, right now, going to be the Trump show … The oxygen is just going to be sucked out of the room focusing on Trump.”

The effects were already evident in the nascent campaign. In announcing last week that he would not run for president, former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan pointed to Trump, saying he feared a “pile up” of low-polling candidates preventing an alternative candidate from “rising up.”

Vivek Ramaswamy — the wealthy biotech entrepreneur and longshot candidate — went the opposite way, diving right into Trump’s orbit. By mid-week, he was calling for “due process” for those arrested in the Jan. 6 riot.

Former Vice President Mike Pence, meantime, took his biggest swing yet at Trump, telling a crowd at the Gridiron dinner on Saturday that “history will hold Donald Trump accountable for Jan. 6.”

Even DeSantis, who has largely sidestepped the former president, appears unlikely to avoid him for long. His visit on Friday to Iowa came with Trump right over his shoulder, with Trump set to follow DeSantis into the first-in-the-nation caucus state on Monday.

And then there are the potential candidates who, by virtue of their resumes, are already inextricably tied to Trump. Haley, Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were all part of his administration.

“It feels like candidates are trying to break away from talking about Trump, but keep getting pulled back in,” said Bob Heckman, a Republican strategist who has worked on nine presidential campaigns. “That’s all good for Trump for two reasons. One, it keeps him relevant, and two, I think it’s what he wants. He wants to be the center of attention.”

Trump’s likely to stay there, too, as multi-candidate events pick up this spring — followed by debates in which Republicans will be pressed for commentary on the riot and other elements of his tenure.

Already, lanes in the GOP primary are constricting in ways that nod to Trump’s strength, with Hogan’s announcement serving as a tacit acknowledgement of the lack of room for any outspoken Trump critic. Former Rep. Liz Cheney, the Wyoming Republican who became the GOP’s most prominent antagonist of Trump, has taken an appointment as a professor of practice at University of Virginia. Former Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska, who was one of seven Republican senators to vote to convict Trump during his second impeachment trial, became a president … of the University of Florida.

In the GOP primary, said former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh — who unsuccessfully challenged Trump for the Republican presidential nomination in 2020 — “It’s going to be Trump, or it’s going to be the Trumpiest son-of-a-bitch out there.”

“That,” he added, “is what this base wants.”

In a normal reelection year for a sitting president, the opposition party would spend its primary at least partly focused on the incumbent — setting up a referendum on President Joe Biden in the fall. But as it was in the midterms in 2022 and, before that — in his own, failed, reelection campaign — the primary is unfolding as a referendum instead on Trump. Noble called it “the sequel, … 100 percent” about Trump. And his opponents, it appears, can do very little about it.

“The press likes him. He’s the story, he’s conflict,” said Beth Miller, a longtime Republican strategist. “How do you not continue to write about him, since all of those issues are still at the forefront.”

It’s possible, if DeSantis or some other Republican makes the primary competitive, that the singular focus on Trump will fade. Significant differences may arise between candidates on immigration, Social Security or any number of other issues.

It’s also possible some other candidate will get in, appealing to what former Republican New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman called voters “who have been dissatisfied, who have moved to the independent column” and who “might come back if they saw a Republican they thought was viable and sane and a little more to the center.”

Asked if any names came to mind, however, she said, “No, not right now.”

Mumbai: A case has been registered against a US citizen for allegedly smoking in the bathroom and misbehaving with other passengers on Air India London-Mumbai flight, said Mumbai Police on Sunday.

The 37-year-old Ramakant has been booked by Mumbai’s Sahar Police Station for his causing inconvenience mid-flight on March 11.

According to the Mumbai Police, a case has been registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 336 (whoever does any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life or the personal safety of others) and Aircraft Act 1937, 22 (refuse to follow a lawful instruction given by the Pilot-in-Command), 23 (Assault and other acts endangering safety or jeopardizing good order and discipline) and 25 (for smoking).

“Smoking is not allowed on the flight but as he went to the bathroom the alarm started to ring and when we all crew ran towards the bathroom saw he had a cigarette in his hand. We immediately threw the cigarette from his hand. Then Ramakant started shouting at all our crew members. Somehow we took him to his seat. But after some time he tried to open the door of the aircraft.

All the passengers got scared because of his behavior and he started acting gimmick on the flight. He was not ready to listen to us and was shouting. Then we tied his hands and legs and made him sit on the seat,” the crew member of Air India told the Sahar Police.

The accused passenger didn’t even stop and started banging his head.

“One person among the passenger was a doctor. He came and checked him. Then Ramakant said that he has some medicine in his bag we didn’t find any but an e-cigarette was recovered while checking the bag,” the police added.

After the flight landed, the passenger Ramkant was handed over to the Sahar police.

Where he was taken into custody and booked under various sections of the IPC.

The Police said that the accused is of Indian origin but a citizen of the United States of America and holds a US passport.

Hyderabad’s air quality swings between moderate and poor

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Air pollution in Hyderabad continues to be a major concern as the city’s air quality fails to improve despite efforts to combat it.

Vehicular movement and business activities have led to a rise in pollution levels, with the air quality fluctuating between moderate and poor over the past month.

Zoo Park area records worst air quality in Hyderabad

The Zoo Park area in particular has been found to have the worst air quality in the city, with its AQI never improving from ‘poor’ over the last 30 days.

The heavy traffic congestion surrounding the Zoo Park area is one of the major contributors to the decline in air quality. The hot and dry climate of the city exacerbates pollution woes, resulting in high levels of PM2.5 and PM10, which are responsible for poor air quality.

Currently, the AQI level at the Zoo Park area is 162, with PM2.5 and PM10 levels of 79 and 99 respectively.

On the other hand, the Banjara Hill area records the best air quality in Hyderabad with an AQI of 28 and a status of ‘Good’.

    What is AQI?

The AQI (Air Quality Index) is a measure of air quality in a particular area. It categorizes air quality into six categories based on AQI value, ranging from ‘Good’ (0-50) to ‘Hazardous’ (401-500).

Air quality is a vital aspect of human life as an individual inhales approximately 14,000 liters of air daily. The presence of contaminants in the air can have negative effects on health.

It is essential to take steps to improve air quality in Hyderabad, such as reducing vehicular emissions and promoting cleaner business practices.

Air India CEO expresses concern over rising cases of unruly passenger behaviour

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Expressing concern over the rising number of instances involving unruly behaviours by passengers, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has called for concerted industry efforts to contain the problem.

Recently, Wilson had informed that incidents surrounding unruly behaviour by inebriated passengers are quite frequent, adding that the airline has now got strict and is reporting all such cases of unruly behaviours.

Wilson had said that the airline has learnt lessons and it could have reacted better to the issues surrounding the ‘peeing’ incident which occurred in November last year.

The Air India CEO said that the airline has realised the importance of reporting all such incidents. Stating that Air India is now investing more in technology, the CEO had told the media that there are many instances where the airline’s crew is at the receiving end when a drunk passenger misbehaves.

Talking to a news organisation, Wilson said that in the last six weeks alone, Air India had witnessed four incidents where people have either assaulted or threatened to physically assault its crew, and the airline is taking a zero-tolerance line on that.

He said that a rise in such cases globally had led even the industry body, International Air Transport Association (IATA), to take a serious view of the situation and call for industry-wide action to stem it.

In the instance of the ‘peeing’ incident onboard AI-102 operating between New York and Delhi on November 26, 2022, the concerned cabin crew and one pilot have been issued show-cause notices and were de-rostered pending investigation.

While addressing a virtual conference last week, the Air India CEO had said that the airline has enormous potential and efforts are on to make the group a significant international player.

Wilson said that Tata group-owned Air India’s order for a record 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing will be worth nearly $70 billion. The CEO also said that the process of integration of Vistara with Air India is underway and is now awaiting approval from the regulatory bodies.

Man booked for smoking in Air India Kolkata-Delhi flight

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A case has been registered against a passenger on an Air India Kolkata-Delhi flight for allegedly smoking inside the lavatory of the plane, official sources said on Monday.

The incident was reported on March 4 and the passenger was identified as Anil Meena.

According to sources, the Air India official handed over the passanger to Delhi Police after he was caught smoking inside the flight’s lavatory.

“He was smoking inside lavatory when the alarm started ringing which alerted the flight crew,” said an official privy to investigation.

“The Delhi ATC was informed about the incident and the passenger was handed over to Delhi Police as soon as the flight landed at IGI Airport.

“On interrogation, the man disclosed that he was a chain smoker,” said the official.

On Sunday, the Delhi police has lodged a case against a student for allegedly urinating on a fellow passenger on a New York-Delhi American Airlines Flight.

The student was said to be drunk at the time of the incident.

The incident allegedly took place on flight number AA292, which took off from New York on Friday and landed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi at 10.12 p.m. on Saturday.

  • Air pollution level in Delhi-NCR this winter was lowest for season since 2018: CSE

Air pollution level in Delhi-NCR this winter was lowest for season since 2018: CSE

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: This winter saw the cleanest air in the Delhi-NCR region since large-scale monitoring started in 2018, according to the latest analysis of air pollution levels by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).

The concentration of air pollutants in Delhi stood at 160 micrograms per cubic meter for the October-January period, which is the lowest level recorded since wide-scale monitoring started in 2018-19, the leading think tank said in its report.

“The PM2.5 level, computed by averaging monitoring data from 36 Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) stations located in the city was 17 percent lower compared to the seasonal average of 2018-19 winter. Based on the subset of the 10 oldest stations, there is an improvement of almost 20 percent,” the CSE report said.

It also said that the number of days with severe or severe-plus air quality was the lowest in the last five years.

“This winter, around 10 days had a city-wide average in ‘severe’ or worse AQI category, which is much lower compared to 24 such days in the previous winter and 33 in the 2018-19 winter,” the report said.

According to CSE, the city also recorded five days of good air this year which is an improvement over the last winter which had recorded one “good” AQI day, whereas, earlier winters did not record any “good” air quality days.

Farm stubble fires this winter were about half of the last winter as the total count of stubble fires reported this year from Punjab, Haryana and Delhi in October and November stood at 55,846 (according to NASA’s VIIRS satellite) and 12,158 (according to MODIS satellite) respectively.

“These are respectively 36 per cent and 40 per cent lower than the figures for October-January in 2021-22. If the FRP (fire radiative power which is the measure of the intensity of fire) is taken into account in addition to the number of fires, it becomes clear that not only were the fires lesser in count, but also lower in intensity compared to the previous two years,” the CSE report said.

It also said that fires have been lower between October 2022 and January 2023, both in count and intensity, compared to the previous two seasons, but are marginally higher compared to the 2019-20 season.

“The spike seen in the fires since the beginning of the pandemic has ended and the situation has reverted to a pre-pandemic scenario. This is a relatively better scenario, but we are still far from attaining our clean air objectives,” the report said.

The quantity of smoke from farm stubble fires affecting Delhi is dependent upon two major factors – quantity and intensity of farm stubble fires and meteorological conditions conducive for transportation of the smoke to Delhi.

This winter, not only the quantity and intensity of farm stubble fires have been low, but also the meteorological conditions have been less conducive for the transport of the smoke and as a result, the total smoke that fell upon Delhi in the form of PM2.5 has been considerably less.

The CSE estimates that about 4.1 tonnes of PM2.5 affected Delhi this winter in the form of smoke, which is 37 per cent less than the 6.4 tonnes last year and almost half of the 2020-21 winter figure.

However, the report also mentioned that even though there has been a significant decline in peak pollution levels, air in NCR continues to remain toxic.

“In comparison to the other NCR cities, Delhi was the most polluted city followed by Greater Noida this winter.

“Among the five big NCR cities, Ghaziabad registered the highest improvement in its winter PM2.5 level with a reduction of 23 per cent compared to the previous winter average. Noida (17 per cent), Faridabad (12 per cent) and Gurugram (6 per cent) also registered improvements in air quality, but it worsened for Greater Noida (-3 per cent),” the CSE analysis report said.

About the way forward, the CSE said clean fuels and emissions control systems are needed in the industries. It also said that massive electrification of the vehicle fleet and scaling up of integrated public transport options with vehicle restraint measures are also needed.

“The only way to prevent the high peaks and smog episodes during winter is to ensure sustained improvement in air quality to meet the national ambient air quality standard across the region.

“This requires region-wide implementation of urban greening and dust control, waste management based on 100 per cent segregation, material recovery and zero landfill policy,” the report said.

Clean construction and recycling of construction and demolition waste, and replacement of solid fuels in households are some other measures that the CSE suggested to prevent the high peaks of pollution in NCR.
