‘I know how it feels to lose everything’: Rohingya refugees send aid to Turkey

    [ad_1]

With little to spare themselves, Rohingya refugees are among those in Bangladesh sending money, blankets and clothing to earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria.

The images of destroyed homes and grieving families resonated with Rohingya expelled by the Myanmar military, prompting online organisation and volunteers walking through the vast refugee camps in Bangladesh collecting donations.

Reports have emerged of people selling their last piece of gold or donating what little cash they could, as Rohingya have rallied together and bought about 700 blankets and 200 jackets which will be delivered by Turkish development agency, Tika.

“When we saw the families being saved from the rubble, parents who lost their loved ones, little babies who lost their parents, people struggling for food and shelter, we felt the same pain as our own situation in 2017 after our homes were burnt by the Myanmar military,” said Sahat Zia Hero, a Rohingya photographer and activist, who helped organise the donations.

“We felt that it was a call for us to show our solidarity towards our brothers and sisters in Turkey and Syria and to share their pain with us.”

He said many remembered that Turkish charities were some of the first to help the Rohingya as they fled the massacres in 2017.

Close to a million Rohingya now live in Bangladesh, in the world’s largest refugee settlement, where they are unable to work or travel. Most were unable to bring many of their belongings from Myanmar; those who did mostly had to give them to boatmen in exchange for help crossing the border.

Amina Khatoun, 56, did have something to sell – a gold bracelet kept for emergencies. The money raised bought boxes of food, clothes, blankets and baby food.

She lives in India, having fled violence in Myanmar. In 2018 she lost her shelter in New Delhi to a fire that razed an entire Rohingya refugee settlement, but the images of the earthquake moved her.

“I know how it feels to lose everything. The people of Turkey stood with us whenever we faced an emergency; Turkey has built hospitals in the Bangladesh refugee camps,” she said.

Her son, Ali Johar, a Rohingya activist, tweeted about his mother’s decision because he thought it was inspiring and might encourage other Rohingya to donate.

Şevki Mert Bariş, Tika’s Bangladesh coordinator, said: “We are very happy to see the Bangladeshi people’s wholehearted support for us during this immense crisis, and it’s a great pleasure to see the donations from the Rohingya refugees.”

Baris said up to eight tons of disaster relief is being sent from Bangladesh to Turkey alongside teams to help with the rescue efforts.

The death toll from last week’s Turkey-Syria earthquakes is nearing 42,000. Turkish authorities say 36,187 people have been killed in the country. The Syrian government and the UN say more than 5,800 people have died in Syria.

Turkey-Armenia border gate reopens after 30 years for quake aid

    [ad_1]

Ankara: A border gate between Turkey and Armenia has been opened for the first time in 30 years for the passage of humanitarian assistance for victims of the devastating earthquakes hitting southern Turkey, the state-run Anadolu News Agency reported.

An Armenian delegation with five trucks of aid has entered Turkey through the Alican Border Gate in the eastern province of Igdir, the report said on Saturday.

The Armenian aid delegation carrying 100 tonnes of food, medicine, and drinking water passed through the gate in the morning toward the southeastern province of Adiyaman, according to a tweet on Saturday by Serdar Kilic, Turkey’s special representative for normalisation talks with Armenia.

On Tuesday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan offered condolences and support to the Turkish people in a phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Xinhua news agency reported.

Armenia has sent 27 rescuers to quake-hit Turkey to assist in the search-and-rescue operations, the country’s Internal Affairs Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Alican Border Gate was last used in the 1988 earthquake in Armenia when the Turkish Red Crescent crossed the border gate to dispatch aid to disaster areas.

Turkey severed diplomatic relations and closed the border with Armenia in 1993 in support of Azerbaijan which was fighting a war with Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, before the two neighbours launched talks for the re-normalisation of relations in 2022.

On Monday, two devastating earthquakes measuring 7.7- and 7.6-magnitude hit 10 provinces in southern Turkey, killing at least 21,848 so far and injuring more than 80,000, according to the latest figures.

Emirates to send emergency aid to victims of Turkey-Syria earthquake

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: In the wake of the catastrophic earthquakes in Turkey and Syria that hit the countries on Monday, Dubai-based Emirates Airlines is setting up an airbridge withthe Dubai International Humanitarian City (IHC),to transport as much as 100 tonnes of crucial aid to survivors.

An air bridge is being established to transport urgent relief supplies, medical materials and equipment over the next two weeks to support the assistance efforts on the ground and search and rescue activities in both countries, Emirates said.

The first shipments are due to go out on Friday, consisting of high thermal blankets and family tents, medical kits and shelter items.

In the coming days, more consignments of blankets, tents, shelter kits, flash lights, water distribution ramps and trauma and emergency health kits will be transported on Emirates.

Emirates SkyCargo plans to dedicate cargo space for around 100 tonnes of humanitarian relief goods over the course of the next two weeks across its daily flight operations to Istanbul.

The critical emergency supplies carried on Emirates will then be delivered by local organizations to affected areas in southern Turkey and northern Syria, supporting on-ground responders and providing much needed aid to the hundreds of thousands of people impacted by the earthquakes.

The new aid mission is the latest step in the UAE’s efforts to support the affected countries.

Earlier on February 7, UAE pledged $100 million to Syria and Turkey. following a massive earthquake that killed more than 23,000 people across both countries.

The 50-bed UAE hospital, which is equipped with a CAT scanner and an X-ray machine, arrived at Gaziantep Airport on Wednesday.

Turkey’s ambassador to the UAE said on Wednesday that the field hospital will be set up in Hatay province.

    [ad_1]

Ankara: The UN’ first convoy of aid crossed from Turkey to Syria’s northwestern Idlib province, three days after the devastating earthquake, the semi-official Anadolu Agency reported.

Six truckloads of aid entered the Bab al-Hawa border crossing through the Cilvegozu border gate in Turkey’s southern Hatay province, the news agency reported.

Bab al-Hawa is currently the only crossing through which the UN aid is allowed to go into the area, Xinhua news agency reported.

Ankara is working to open two more border gates with Syria to enable the delivery of humanitarian aid to its neighbour which also suffers from massive earthquakes, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday.

“Cilvegozu border gate is open. We are working to open two more gates … We also provide the necessary support for the aid to reach Syria,” Cavusoglu told reporters.

A magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck Turkey’s southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4:17 a.m. local time, followed by a magnitude-7.6 quake at 1:24 p.m. local time in the same province on Monday.

The death toll from the massive earthquakes in southern Turkey and northern Syria has surpassed 22,000.

  • Guterres appeals for aid to Syria, Turkey, depoliticising relief

Guterres appeals for aid to Syria, Turkey, depoliticising relief

    [ad_1]

United Nations: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday appealed for international aid to earthquake-devastated Syria and Turkey and said relief operations should be depoliticised.

“Now is the hour to stand up for the people of Turkey and Syria,” he said speaking to reporters.

Recalling the welcome refugees have received from both the countries, he said: “I strongly appeal to the international community to show the people of Turkey and Syria the same kind of support and generosity with which they received, protected and assisted millions of refugees.”

While Turkey has been receiving aid, including from India which has sent personnel relief material on at least six flights, Guterres focused on Syria which is isolated.

Relief operations there face political obstructions because the government of President Bashar al Assad is under western sanctions and most of the quake-hit areas are under rebel control with limited international access.

“It’s not the moment to politicise or to divide, but it is obvious that we need massive support,” Guterres said.

“The Syria humanitarian fund and the Syria cross-border fund need an urgent injection of support,” he said.

He said that he will be launching a “flash appeal” for assistance to Syria.

With the Syrian government under sanctions from several countries, notably the US, Guterres said: “This is a moment in which everybody must make very clear that no sanctions of any kind interfere with relief to the population of Syria.”

Most of the areas in northwest Syria hit by the quake are held by rebels, with only one border crossing into the area from Turkey allowed under Security Council resolutions.

Russia, which supports the Assad government, has been the main obstacle to adding more lines to the Bab al-Hawa crossing in the rebel-held territory, permitting only that crossing in a compromise with the western countries on the Security Council.

“I will be of course very happy if the Security Council could reach a consensus to allow for more crossings to be used, as we need also to increase our capacity to deliver on cross-line operations into Idlib,” Guterres said referring to the rebel-held area.

He said that $25 million has been released from the UN emergency relief fund for operations in Syria.

A UN convoy carrying relief supplies crossed into northern Syria through the Bab al-Hawa crossing on Thursday morning, he said.

Ankara: Turkey is working to open two more border gates with Syria to enable the delivery of humanitarian aid to its neighbour which also suffers from massive earthquakes, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

“Cilvegozu border gate is open. We are working to open two more gates … We also provide the necessary support for the aid to reach Syria,” Cavusoglu told reporters on Wednesday at a joint news conference attended by Turkish Vice-President Fuat Oktay.

Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the road leading to the Bab al-Hawa Border Crossing from Turkey to northern Syria was damaged, and the aid delivery to the rebel-held northwest was temporarily disrupted.

The UN is preparing a convoy to cross into Syria, but that would likely require a new agreement with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government, Dujarric added.

Bab al-Hawa, across Turkey’s Cilvegozu gate, is the only crossing through which UN aid is allowed into the area, Xinhua news agency reported.

A magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck Turkey’s southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4:17 a.m. local time, followed by a magnitude-7.6 quake at 1:24 p.m. local time in the same province.

The death toll from Monday’s devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey and northern Syria has surpassed 12,000.

Many countries and global aid agencies are offering rescue teams and relief supplies to quake-hit regions in Turkey and Syria.

The death toll from a massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria is likely to “double or more” from its current level of 28,000, United Nations relief chief Martin Griffiths told Sky News.

“I think it is difficult to estimate precisely as we need to get under the rubble, but I’m sure it will double or more,” said Griffiths after travelling to the city of Kahramanmaras in Turkey, the epicenter of the first earthquake. “We haven’t really begun to count the number of dead,” he said.

The estimate would take the tally of deaths to around three times the 17,118 dead following the huge earthquake in northwestern Turkey in 1999.

On February 6, a series of large earthquakes hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, followed by hundreds of aftershocks.

Rescue teams are still out searching for survivors. “Soon, the search and rescue people will make way for the humanitarian agencies whose job it is to look after the extraordinary numbers of those affected for the next months,” Griffiths said in a video posted to Twitter.

Almost 26 million people have been affected by the earthquake, the World Health Organization said.
