Canada needs 30 thousand new immigrants in agri sector: Report

    [ad_1]

Toronto: Canada needs 30,000 permanent immigrants over the next decade to either start up their own farms, or take over existing ones, to address a looming labour crisis in the agriculture industry, says a new study.

According to a Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) research, 40 per cent of Canadian farm operators will retire by 2033, placing agriculture on the cusp of one of the biggest labour and leadership transitions in the country’s history.

Over the same period, a shortfall of 24,000 general farm, nursery and greenhouse workers is expected to emerge, and in 10 years, 60 per cent of today’s farm operators will be over the age of 65, that is, close to retirement.

Amidst all this, 66 per cent of producers do not have a succession plan in place, leaving the future of farmland in doubt, the study said.

Canada’s agricultural sector is among the most diverse in the world though the degree of demand for foreign workers differs significantly by province and operation.

When it comes to more highly-skilled farm operators, Canada has always welcomed them from India, the Netherlands, China, the US and the UK.

However, in case of immigration of low-skilled labourers, better policies are needed because the Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW) program, which remains a critical source of low-skilled labour, is just a provisional solution to a chronic issue, the study said.

Many of these TFWs who develop skills essential to seeding and harvests, must return to their home countries for short periods, and if they are unable to return to Canada, the country’s on-farm workforce is dramatically reduced.

RBC researchers said that a pathway to permanent residency for experienced TFWs will immediately address this type of shortage.

Canada had started an agriculture-specific immigration pilot programme in 2020 to give a path to permanent residency for non-seasonal workers with experience, which is set to end in May 2023, a CBC News report said.

As of February 2023, more than 1,500 people have been admitted through the program in Ottawa province.

A department spokesperson told CBC that they are assessing the pilot programme “and the possible extension beyond its scheduled expiry”.

The spokesperson added that giving migrants permanent residence “is not the solution to labour shortages”.

While flying to Sircilla in a helicopter, KTR along with assembly speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy and agriculture minister S Niranjan Reddy, had an aerial view of the Konda Pochamma Sagar, Mallana Sagar, Ranganayaka Sagar, Annapurna Reservoir and the Mid Manair Reservoir and said, “None of these reservoirs existed in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, but now they have been developed as they played a crucial role in the expansion of cultivation area in the district.”

Srinivas Reddy praised the developmental activities uptaken by the minister and said KTR had ensured the development of the district.

“Rajanna-Sircilla district stood in first place in Telangana with a major improvement in the groundwater table while the cultivation area in the state has increased by 2.30 lakh acres from 1.80 lakh acres with the construction of irrigation projects,” said Srinivas.

Niranjan Reddy said there was a shortage of agriculture colleges in the country. Out of 700 agricultural colleges across the country, only 73 were in the government sector.

In another development, a primary processing centre, built under the auspices of the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation in the district of Rajanna Sircilla was inaugurated by KTR.

Centre refuses to buy rice from Telangana despite demand: Agri minister

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Agriculture minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy said the central government is refusing to purchase rice grains from Telangana despite the lack of rice grains in the country.

“Central government says that there is no rice in the country at present. Telangana is the largest producer of paddy and the crop is being cultivated on 56.44 lakh acres in Yasangi. However, the Centre is refusing to buy rice grains from us,” he said while attending the Kisan Mela on Saturday.

The Kisan Mela was conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP).

He alleged that the Centre does not have scientific estimations of the crops that need to be cultivated. “The crops being cultivated in the various parts of the country should be estimated and the growth of crops that are needed should be facilitated based on these numbers,” Singireddy said.

The agriculture minister said that there is a lot of demand for medicinal plants in the international markets. “Cultivation of medicinal plants should be encouraged as without medicinal plants there will be no medicines for the 800 crore people in this world,” said the BRS leader.

Singireddy said that cosmetic products made from chemical ingredients are harmful to health and natural medicinal plants can give a higher quality of life. “Natural products are gaining popularity in society. China dominates the global market for medicinal plants. Farmers should be encouraged to grow the crops that are in demand,” he said.
