US adds a robust 311,000 jobs despite Fed’s rate hikes

Last month, the government reported a surprising burst of hiring for January — 517,000 added jobs — though that gain was revised down slightly to 504,000 in Friday’s report. Consumers also ramped up their spending in January, suggesting that the economy had strengthened at the start of the year. The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge also accelerated.

With February’s sizable job growth coming after January’s expansive gain, the Fed may accelerate its rate hikes to combat inflation. When the Fed tightens credit, it typically leads to higher rates on mortgages, auto loans, credit card borrowing and many business loans.

What the Fed may decide to do about interest rates when it meets later this month remains uncertain. The decision will rest, in part, on its assessment of Friday’s jobs data and next week’s report on consumer inflation in February. Last month, the government’s report on January inflation had raised alarms by showing that consumer prices had reaccelerated on a month-to-month basis.

The vigorous job growth for January, reported early last month, was the first in a series of reports to point to an accelerating economy at the start of the year. Sales at retail stores and restaurants also jumped, and inflation, according to the Fed’s preferred measure, rose from December to January at the fastest pace in seven months.

The stronger data reversed a cautiously optimistic narrative that the economy was cooling modestly — just enough, perhaps, to tame inflation without triggering a deep recession. Now, the economic outlook is hazier.

High borrowing rates have cratered the housing market, with home sales having dropped for 12 straight months, a consequence of the average mortgage rate nearly doubling over that time. Manufacturing is also showing signs of weakness. Higher rates have made it harder for businesses and consumers to borrow to buy major factory goods, from machinery to cars to appliances.

By contrast, spending for services — things like traveling, dining out and attending entertainment events — remains strong. Many Americans continue to engage in activities that were restricted during the COVID lockdowns.

Hiring at February’s pace is about triple the level the Fed would prefer. Job gains of about 100,000 a month would be just enough to keep up with population growth and prevent unemployment from rising. A figure that low would also mean that employers weren’t so desperate for workers and wouldn’t have to keep raising wages.

Higher pay is great for employees, of course. But Fed officials say it is contributing to higher inflation, particularly in labor-intensive service industries like restaurants, health care and hotels.

Royal Mint adds Dumbledore coin to Harry Potter-themed collection

    [ad_1]

A coin featuring Prof Albus Dumbledore has been launched as part of a Harry Potter-themed collection from the Royal Mint.

The collection was introduced in 2022 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The new coin has the king’s portrait on the “heads” side, while two other coins in the collection feature the late Queen Elizabeth II. It is available to buy from the Mint’s website as a 50p denomination version as well as in other denominations.

Other coins in the collection feature Potter, the Hogwarts Express, and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

So far, Harry Potter enthusiasts across 86 countries had bought coins from the range, the Royal Mint said.

Rebecca Morgan, the director of collector services, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our spellbinding Harry Potter coin collection with Professor Albus Dumbledore featuring on his very own 50p.

“The Royal Mint’s Harry Potter coin collection has seen a popular response among collectors worldwide, not only for the books being a global phenomenon, but due to the collection being one of a small number that will see a change of portrait during the series. The 50p coin featuring Professor Albus Dumbledore marks this change of portrait, with his majesty King Charles III’s official coin portrait now appearing for the first time in the series.

“This collection of coins serves as a permanent reminder of the fascinating transition from Britain’s longest reigning monarch to his majesty the king’s first appearance on UK coinage.”

Some of the coins in the collection are in colour and some have a “latent feature” that rotates in the light to reveal a lightning bolt and the number “25” to mark the anniversary year. Royal Mint used an advanced picosecond laser to imprint the intricate designs.

The coin series has been created in partnership with Bloomsbury Publishing, the Blair Partnership and Warner Bros Consumer Products.

Prices for the Dumbledore coin range from £11 for a brilliant uncirculated 50p and £20 for a colour version, to £5,215 for a £200 denomination gold coin.

    [ad_1]

The Supreme Court said that it will list for hearing on February 6 a PIL challenging the “ban” on the BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’. Earlier, the government had banned the documentary.

Like SRK, BBC has been struggling to get audience for its documentary and after failing to make it a controversy ahead of 2024 general election, BBC too has decided to add Salaman Khan’s cameo in its documentary to make it reach wider audience.

However, Salman Khan’s role in the documentary isn’t finalised yet but his picture with Modi flying kite is likely to be added in the documentary, reported Fauxy reporter in Godhara.

Since the release of Pathaan which had only Salman Khan’s cameo as worth watching, Salman Khan has been keeping extremely busy.

If sources are to be believed, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has requested Salman Khan to do a cameo during her Budget speech.

  • Twitter Adds ‘official’ Label For Selected Verified Accounts Including PM Modi, The Wire, More

Twitter Adds ‘official’ Label For Selected Verified Accounts Including PM Modi, The Wire, More

    [ad_1]

As Twitter debuts its new $8 Twitter Blue service, it will designate some verified accounts as “official”, Esther Crawford, the company’s early stage products executive, said on Tuesday.

“Accounts that will receive [the label] include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures,” Crawford tweeted.

“Not all previously verified accounts will get the ‘Official’ label and the label is not available for purchase.”

Crawford said that users’ identities will not be verified using identification cards or other materials through the updated Twitter Blue subscription programme, which will let paid customers have their accounts verified with a blue checkmark.

The disclosure is the most recent development as Twitter, now owned by Elon Musk, explains its ambitions for verification on the network.

On November 1, Musk said Twitter would start giving blue checkmarks, which were intended to identify genuine and influential users, to Blue subscribers. Blue is the platform’s premium service.

“Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month,” Musk wrote.

The redesigned premium service appeared to have opened momentarily over the weekend, as the social media company stated in an update for Apple iOS devices on Saturday that anyone who “signs up now” to its premium “Twitter Blue” service will receive a blue tick. In addition, longer movies will be able to be posted and priority ranking for platform-posted material are among the additional features that were promised as part of the premium service makeover.

Fake accounts for government officials are a recurring issue for Twitter globally. According to a source with knowledge of the situation who spoke to Reuters, the company’s policy executives pushed for the new “official” label because they were deeply concerned that international governments would not likely and would not be ready to pay for verified check marks.

Musk is moving to take control of the platform’s operations, and the adjustments to the Blue programme are only one of many moving components. There were rumours that Twitter had urged “dozens” of individuals to return to work after cutting off half of its global workforce the previous week.

In India, various individuals and organisations got official label which includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, The Wire and more.
