‘I heard it’: Harry Kane’s wooing by United fans adds twist to Spurs drama

    [ad_1]

Harry Kane heard it, all right – the extraordinary public wooing from the Manchester United support on Thursday night. “Harry Kane … we’ll see you in June,” they sang at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, half an hour or so into the game, and it took a much-discussed plotline to new levels.

At his press conference on Wednesday, Erik ten Hag had been full of flattery for Kane. A new centre-forward is the United manager’s priority and he would love to sign the England captain. But how often do thousands of fans make it clear to a player during a match that they would like him to come to their club?

A few quick points. The Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy, is dead against selling Kane in the summer, even though the player will be out of contract in June of next year. United are wary of dealing with Levy and they are dead against a protracted summer chase. Kane has said nothing about a Spurs contract extension and intends to take stock at the end of the season.

“I heard what they were saying,” Kane said of the United supporters’ chant. “But I’m just focused on this team and trying to finish [the season] strongly.”

On one level, it had to have been nice for Kane to hear it. Everybody likes to feel wanted and respected. But on another, it perhaps reinforced the delicacy of Kane’s situation. He loves Spurs and has given his professional life to them. But as he approaches his 30th birthday in July, he wants to ensure that he competes at Champions League level and has a chance of finally winning silverware.

Can Kane do that at Spurs? The evidence of this season is an obvious no. But can he get out? He was blocked from doing so two summers ago when Manchester City tried to sign him. And, even though his contract is now much shorter, there is nothing to suggest that he will be granted a move.

When the United fans bellowed their chant, which was also in part to taunt the home crowd, Kane could have been excused a sigh. Spurs were 1-0 down and being overrun. They looked inhibited, dropping off United, inviting them to play. Although Spurs created a couple of chances, they gave up many more and the half-time scoreline could have been heavier than 2-0.

There were anti-Levy chants from the South Stand and boos upon the half-time whistle but overall the mood was one of resignation. Spurs were at another low ebb, albeit not as low as that during last Sunday’s 6-1 hammering at Newcastle, the nadir of a crisis that had been weeks in the making, which Kane traces to the 3-3 draw at Southampton on 18 March, from 3-1 up. That was when the team conceded two late goals and Antonio Conte publicly eviscerated the players.

Conte would leave his post as manager a week or so later and since then we have had the home support abusing one of their own players (Davinson Sánchez in the 3-2 loss to Bournemouth); the departure of the managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, over the financial scandal at his previous club, Juventus; the replacement of one interim manager with another (Cristian Stellini out, Ryan Mason in) and the stalling of the push for a top-four finish. After the Newcastle debacle, the players felt moved to reimburse the travelling fans for the cost of their tickets.

All of which made what happened in the second half against United so remarkable, the comeback to salvage a 2-2 draw such a show of personality and togetherness, nobody hiding. The home crowd had not really got on the players’ backs in the first half; they did not react badly to United’s early goal. Their target was Levy. But once Spurs got on the front foot after the interval, the fans had something to get behind and they did. With Kane outstanding, Spurs roared back with goals from Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min.

“I thought the fans were amazing,” Kane said. “They really helped us in that second half. That’s the character and fight we have to show between now and the end of the season and it was good to hear the stadium rocking.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Kane said it was “quite calm” in the dressing room at half-time. Mason made tactical tweaks, mainly to stop the United midfield from enjoying such easy possession; to get Spurs higher up the pitch.

The real reset had come on Monday morning, when Levy summoned the squad’s senior players for a clear-the-air meeting. He had already decided to sack Stellini and replace him with Mason. The talks with Kane, Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg were an attempt to draw a line under the chaos.

“The chairman asked for a meeting,” Kane said. “It was important [for him] to understand where the players’ heads were at. It wasn’t just the Newcastle result. It had been building up since we conceded the two goals against Southampton.

“It was an honest conversation of where everyone is at and what we need to try to do to give us the best possible chance to finish the season with something. We’re still fighting for fourth place but if it’s not fourth we’ll try to finish fifth or sixth. In this league, it’s so competitive you can easily end up eighth or ninth if you’re not careful. That’s what it was – to give us the best chance.”

Spurs go to Liverpool on Sunday when belief and bravery will again be needed. They would appear, at least, to have recovered a platform.

More untimely rain adds to Telangana farmers’ woes

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: While a fresh spell of untimely rain across Telangana is causing more damage to agricultural crops, the state government has assured farmers that it will stand by them.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president and state minister K.T. Rama Rao on Wednesday told farmers not to panic over the losses and assured them that the government will render all possible assistance.

KTR, as the Minister is popularly known, voiced concern over the losses incurred by farmers due to untimely rains and hailstorms in various districts.

    MS Education Academy

He asked party MLAs and other public representatives to undertake field visits in their respective constituencies and review the situation in coordination with local officials.

Advising farmers not to worry, he told them that the state government will come to their rescue.

He recalled that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao himself personally visited the affected areas, reviewed the situation and gave assurance to farmers.

With more rain expected in the next couple of days, KTR requested the officials to be available at the field level.

Agricultural crops in some districts were damaged due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms during the last 3-4 days.

KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, on Sunday directed Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari to take up the assessment of crop damages.

He asked the Chief Secretary to speak to District Collectors and get detailed reports on crop damages.

Minister for Civil Supplies Gangula Kamalar has assured farmers that the KCR government will provide 100 per cent compensation.

Unseasonal rains and hailstorms had damaged crops over 2.28 lakh acres in various parts of the state last month as well.

KCR had then visited a few affected areas and announced a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre.

However, after a survey the agriculture department decided to pay compensation only in respect of 1.51 lakh acres.

Officials said the money will be deposited in the bank accounts of 1,30,988 farmers.

Microsoft adds Detach from Edge option for improved multitasking in Edge

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft has introduced a new option called ‘Detach from Edge’ in its Edge browser, which will allow users to separate the side panel from the main Edge window for increased flexibility and multitasking.

According to GeekerMag, the Edge Sidebar is a built-in panel on the right side of the browser that houses a variety of features, shortcuts, and websites for quick access.

The option is available in the Microsoft Edge Canary version 114.0.1789.0.

    MS Education Academy

Despite the ability to hide Edge’s sidebar, the new ‘Detach from Edge’ option offers an additional level of customisation by enabling users to pin the sidebar to the right side of their desktop, making navigation easier, the report said.

With the ‘Detach from Edge’ feature, users can customise their workspace and increase productivity by customising their browsing experience.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has announced that its OpenAI’s DALL-E-powered AI image generator is now available on desktop for Edge users around the world.

The company introduced the feature to the new Bing and Edge preview last month.

Image Creator allows users to create an image simply by using their own words to describe the picture they want to see.

This feature will help you create images that don’t yet exist, right from the Microsoft Edge sidebar, the company said.

  • Instagram Reels adds dedicated trends section for creators

Instagram Reels adds dedicated trends section for creators

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta-owned Instagram has announced new features on its short-video making app to empower creators.

The social network has added a dedicated destination for trending audio and hashtags, two new metrics to Reels insights and brought gifts on Reels to more countries.

Creators will now be able to see what the top trending topics and hashtags are on Reels.

    MS Education Academy

“We’re making it easier for you to edit your reels on Instagram by bringing together video clips, audio, stickers, and text on a unified editing screen,” said Meta.

This makes it easier to align and time elements of your reel to the right moments in a more visual way.

This feature is available globally, across both iOS and Android devices.

The two new metrics being added on Reels are total watch time and average watch time.

“Total watch time captures the total amount of time your reel was played, including any time spent replaying the reel. Average watch time captures the average amount of time spent playing your reel, calculated by dividing watch time with the number of total plays,” explained the company.

For example if your average watch time is 17 seconds, out of everyone who watched your Reel they watched an average of 17 seconds.

This will help creators better understand where people are being engaged or where you may need to create a stronger hook to have viewers stay longer.

“We’re also adding a new way to see how your reels are contributing to your growth. You’ll now receive a notification with new followers from your reels,” the company mentioned.

The company is also adding a new feature to show creators which fans have sent them a gift, so they can recognise their supporters.

  • Microsoft adds AI-powered Bing to SwiftKey app on iOS, Android

Microsoft adds AI-powered Bing to SwiftKey app on iOS, Android

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Microsoft has announced the addition of AI-powered Bing capabilities to the SwiftKey app (a third-party keyboard) on iOS and Android.

This new addition will allow users to chat with the AI chatbot directly from their mobile keyboard and search for things without having to switch between apps.

SwiftKey has been part of the Microsoft family since 2016.

    MS Education Academy

“Bing integrates in three major ways – Search, Chat, and Tone. The update is available today. Once you’ve got the update, you’ll see the Bing icon above the keyboard. From there you can click on the exact feature you’d like to use; Chat, Tone, or Search,” Microsoft said in a blhttps://www.siasat.com/linkedin-introduces-new-ways-to-verify-identity-work-2568179/ogpost.

With the Chat functionality, users can access the new Bing on the go for more detailed queries, while, with the Tone feature, users can communicate more effectively by using AI to customise their in-progress text to fit any situation.

Moreover, the Search functionality will let users quickly search the web from their keyboard without switching apps.

“These new features in SwiftKey are accessible in all markets where the new Bing is available; anyone can use Search now while accessing Tone and Chat requires that you sign into your Microsoft Account that has been approved to access the new Bing preview,” the company said.

Further, the tech giant introduced the “translator functionality” in the mobile Bing app, which will offer alternative masculine and feminine translations when translating from English to Spanish, French, or Italian.

This feature will allow users to choose the gendered translation that best fits their context and is helpful for well-intentioned speakers of all proficiency levels.

The company also expanded Bing access to Skype so that everyone in a group chat can now chat with the new Bing.

Only one person in the group needs to have access to the preview.

This means as a group you can use the new Bing from within the Skype app just like you’d use the new Bing on a desktop; you can use it to, for example, settle a debate, help plan a group trip, or find a restaurant for you all to meet at in person, according to the company.

The new Bing is now also available via the Microsoft Start app too, for users who have cleared the waitlist.

  • U.S. adds a healthy 236,000 jobs despite Fed’s rate hikes

U.S. adds a healthy 236,000 jobs despite Fed’s rate hikes

    [ad_1]

    screenshot 2023 04 07 085045

Despite last month’s brisk job growth, the latest economic signs increasingly suggest that an economic slowdown may be upon us. Manufacturing is weakening. America’s trade with the rest of the world is declining. And though restaurants, retailers and other services companies are still growing, they are doing so more slowly.

For Fed officials, taming inflation is Job One. They were slow to respond after consumer prices started surging in the spring of 2021, concluding that it was only a temporary consequence of supply bottlenecks caused by the economy’s surprisingly explosive rebound from the pandemic recession.

Only in March 2022 did the Fed begin raising its benchmark rate from near zero. In the past year, though, it has raised rates more aggressively than it had since the 1980s to attack the worst inflation bout since then.

And as borrowing costs have risen, inflation has steadily eased. The latest year-over-year consumer inflation rate — 6% — is well below the 9.1% rate it reached last June. But it’s still considerably above the Fed’s 2% target.

Complicating matters is turmoil in the financial system. Two big American banks failed in March, and higher rates and tighter credit conditions could further destabilize banks and depress borrowing and spending by consumers and businesses.

The Fed is aiming to achieve a so-called soft landing — slowing growth just enough to tame inflation without causing the world’s biggest economy to tumble into recession. Most economists doubt it will work; they expect a recession later this year.

So far, the economy has proved resilient in the face of ever-higher borrowing costs. America’s gross domestic product — the economy’s total output of goods and services — expanded at a healthy pace in second half of 2022. Yet recent data suggests that the economy is losing momentum.

On Monday, the Institute for Supply Management, an association of purchasing managers, reported that U.S. manufacturing activity contracted in March for a fifth straight month. Two days later, the ISM said that growth in services, which accounts for the vast majority of U.S. employment, had slowed sharply last month.

On Wednesday, the Commerce Department reported that U.S. exports and imports both fell in February in another sign that the global economy is weakening.

The Labor Department on Thursday said it had adjusted the way it calculates how many Americans are filing for unemployment benefits. The tweak added nearly 100,000 claims to its figures for the past two weeks and might explain why heavy layoffs in the tech industry this year had yet to show up on the unemployment rolls.

The Labor Department also reported this week that employers posted 9.9 million job openings in February, the fewest since May 2021 but still far higher than anything seen before 2021.

In its quest for a soft landing, the Fed has expressed hope that employers would ease wage pressures by advertising fewer vacancies rather than by cutting many existing jobs. The Fed also hopes that more Americans will start looking for work, thereby adding to the supply of labor and reducing pressure on employers to raise wages.

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft has added a green screen feature in Teams, which will provide an enhanced virtual background effect during meetings.

“Microsoft Teams now supports a green screen feature which provides an enhanced virtual background effect. Green screen improves the sharpness and definition of the virtual background effect around your face, head, ears, and hair. It also allows you to show a prop or other object in your hand to be more visible to other meeting participants,” Jan Steberl, Microsoft Teams program manager, said in a blogpost.

Moreover, the company said that the green screen will require a solid colour screen or a background wall behind users.A

    MS Education Academy

“The screen or background wall must be flat without stains or other irregularities. Users must apply a background effect in Teams meetings to enable the green screen effect and should carefully select the backdrop colour so that the effect is applied correctly and better quality is achieved,” Microsoft said.

The green screen feature is available now for everyone in the public preview channel of Microsoft Teams.

The company also mentioned that the feature is only supported on Windows and macOS devices with Intel chips.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has rolled out ‘Avatars’ in a public preview in Teams.

“Avatars for Microsoft Teams offers an alternative to the current binary option of video or no video,” the tech giant said in a blogpost.

New Delhi: Web browser company Opera on Wednesday announced that it is adding AI-powered features to its desktop browsers Opera and Opera GX — namely AI Prompts, plus sidebar access to ChatGPT, and ChatSonic, to transform users’ browsing experience.

These new tools are available in early access across all desktop platforms, according to the company.

AI Prompts, a native feature in the Opera Browser, will help users shorten a long confusing text or explain it to them, whether it’s a paragraph, a whole article, or even a website.

“Accessible when you highlight text or directly from the address bar, AI Prompts is your new, go-to tool to interpret, to summarise, and to explore the web, offering you an experience that’s tailored to your interests and needs,” Opera said in a blogpost.

  • Traveling to Srinagar: RTO Kashmir Adds Three New Routes, Services From Monday

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Regional transport authorities in Kashmir on Friday said they are going to start an integrated bus service likely from Monday on three new routes which will be covering the city’s major areas.

Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir, Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari said that the step is aimed to provide respite to commuters traveling to Srinagar and to streamline the traffic with a new formula.

“We are integrating the routes in Srinagar, and in the first phase, we will cover the three long routes which will be covering most of the city areas,” RTO Kashmir said, adding, “These are not the new routes but an integrated version of the already existing routes.”

The new integrated routes, Bukhari said, are from Parimpora to Harwan, Budgam to Hazratbal, and Pantha chowk to Soura.

Explaining the route map, he said the bus service from Pantha chowk to Soura will travel through Shivpora, TRC, Batamaloo, Lal chowk, Ali Jan Road and then Soura, and will return via the same route to its starting point.

For Budgam to Hazratbal, he said, the bus will cover Humhama, Peerbagh, Rambagh, LD, TRC, Rainawari, and finally to Hazratbal. From Parimpora to Harwan, the bus will cover routes leading to Lal Chowk, TRC, and finally to Harwan, he added.

The RTO Kashmir said that in the first phase, they have started integration on three routes and that they are likely to integrate more routes to ease down the traveling for commuters. “This will be a trial phase and we will be starting with 40 to 45 buses which will be of 25 to 32 seat capacity and their scheduling will be done after every fifteen minutes,” he added.
