  • KCCI Delegation Meets Union Minister to Address Pashmina Export Issues

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A delegation led by the President of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Javid Ahmad Tenga, recently called on the Union Minister for Forest, Environment & Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bhupinder Yadav, to discuss the challenges faced by exporters of Pashmina shawls. The delegation highlighted the problems faced by exporters at customs, where their shawls are suspected of containing banned content.

During the meeting, the KCCI presented a detailed presentation about the heritage Pashmina craft, it’s weaving process, and exports clearance. The delegation emphasized that the centuries-old cottage craft provided employment to tens of thousands of male & female artisans and the product was in demand within and outside the country in the form of shawls, stoles, rumals, lingerie, and fashion items.

However, exporters have been facing difficulties at customs for some time, where Wildlife Department officials send the shawls to testing facilities outside Delhi (Dehradun/Kolkata) for further examination. Sometimes, the tests report the presence of Guard Hair, which is confused with Shahtoosh, causing a considerable period of time to be lost. This process results in the chain of production getting disturbed and affecting the livelihoods of artisans involved in the process of Pashmina weaving & embroidery.

The KCCI proposed to the minister that in view of conflicting reports of laboratories, the DNA testing of export consignments be done. The Minister accepted the KCCI proposal and assured that in future, DNA testing will be done to address this issue. The Minister was also apprised of the issue of NOC/clearance by Pollution Control Committee, which needed to be simplified and made time-bound.

The KCCI President invited the Minister for a seminar in Srinagar to review the progress of conservation projects being carried out by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. The Minister accepted the invitation and asked the KCCI to communicate a suitable date for the seminar for confirmation.

  • JK Budget 2023-24 Fails To Address Unemployment, Poverty Alleviation: NC

JK Budget 2023-24 Fails To Address Unemployment, Poverty Alleviation: NC

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) on Tuesday said the budgetary allocations for J&K for the year 2023-2024 have failed to cater to the needs of people of J&K saying it has nothing substantial for J&K’s trade, industry and commerce.

In response to the budgetary allocations for J&K, the party’s state spokesperson, Imran Nabi Dar, stated that it was all “flamboyance and wordplay.”

According to him, “There is nothing for unemployed youth. No blueprint on job creation for youth. We have lakhs of unemployed youths in J&K. There was not even a single word about addressing the plight of contractual, daily wagers and need-based employees. There is no ray of hope for our unemployed and skilled youth. They have been forsaken.”

Imran commented on the budget, highlighting that it was the fifth budget in a row that was not passed by the elected legislature of Jammu and Kashmir. He questioned the reasoning behind this, stating, “The exercise itself raises a question why an entire populace of nearly 1.40 Cr people continues to remain without a representative Assembly. An elected Assembly could have discussed and ascertained the needs and aspirations of the people of JK before tabling annual budgetary allocations and estimates. It is again for the fifth time that the concerned stakeholders were not consulted before the tabling of the budget.”

“There is nothing substantial for the horticulture sector of J&K. We expected them to announce a waiver on the KCC loans and bring down the GST rates on packaging items. Their claims of boosting horticulture and other allied sectors have remained restricted to statements only. No steps have been taken to augment fruit processing infrastructure either,” he said.

There is no handholding of artisans, marginal traders, transporters, hawkers, and start-ups, he said, adding that the budget has failed to fulfill the needs and aspirations of all the stakeholders across Jammu and Kashmir.

Ruing the failure of the government in upgrading the connectivity of Kashmir with the rest of the country, he said that there is nothing substantial for the upgradation and augmentation of Mughal road, Kishtwar-Sinthan road, Sadna top, and other road projects. (KNO)

  • Kejriwal, Mann to address AAP workers in Raipur on Sunday

Kejriwal, Mann to address AAP workers in Raipur on Sunday

    [ad_1]

Raipur: Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal will be on a one-day visit to Chhattisgarh capital Raipur on Sunday to boost AAP’s preparations for the assembly elections in the state scheduled later this year, a party leader said.

Kejriwal will be accompanied by Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the duo will address a party workers’ convention here.

The AAP had tried its luck for the first time in Chhattisgarh assembly polls in 2018 and fielded candidates in 85 of 90 seats but failed to achieve success. However, a landslide win in Punjab last year turbocharged its national ambitions.

Even though it won in just five constituencies despite running a high-decibel campaign in Gujarat, where the Bharatiya Janata Party won a record 156 seats, the party garnered about 13 per cent vote share. On Saturday, AAP also announced its plans to contest all 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh, which too goes to polls this year.

The visit of the AAP top leadership and their interaction with party workers will further strengthen the preparations for the assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, Delhi minister and the party’s state election in-charge Gopal Rai told reporters here.

The two leaders will address the party workers’ convention in Jora ground in front of the Agriculture university around 3 pm on Sunday, he said.

Rai accused the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party that have governed the state since it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000. The present Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government has completely failed on the law and order front, he claimed.

Highlighting several schemes of the Kejriwal government in New Delhi in just few years of its rule, Rai demanded to know why Chhattisgarh has failed to register such achievements in so many years.

He said the BJP and Congress have been seeking votes through false promises and populist announcements.

  • US needs to address India’s downward trend of democratic values: Senatorial report

US needs to address India’s downward trend of democratic values: Senatorial report

    [ad_1]

Washington: As the US focuses on the Indo-Pacific, in particular the Quad, the Biden administration needs to address India’s ties with Russia and its “downward trend of democratic values and institutions”, said a report by the Democratic Party of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.

The report has called for supporting a strong and democratic India.

Senate Foreign Affairs Chairman Senator Robert Menendez Thursday said the US needs to approach the Indo-Pacific with a well-resourced, whole-of-government approach that synchronizes the military-security elements with diplomatic, economic, and civil society elements to ensure the greatest chance of success.

The “Strategic Alignment: The Imperative of Resourcing the Indo-Pacific Strategy”, a Majority Staff Report, was released by Menendez on Thursday.

“I believe that President Biden’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, released one year ago, adopts this whole-of-government approach. If fully equipped with the tools that it needs to be successful, this strategy will underpin the United States’ leadership in the most consequential and dynamic region of the world in the 21st century,” he said.

The report said the Biden administration was correct not to make its Indo-Pacific strategy solely about competition with the People’s Republic of China. But to succeed, it has to grapple with the realities of this competition for the US and the challenges it poses for its regional allies and partners, it said.

In its seventh and last recommendation, the Major Staff Report calls for supporting a strong and democratic India.

“Even as the administration rightly treats India as an important security partner, it will need to address the very real complications of India’s continued ties with, and dependence on, Russia for defence equipment and its recent downward trend of democratic values and institution,” it said.

According to the report, the United States and China vie for the position of India’s largest trading partner.

India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported in June 2022 that trade with the US exceeded that of China, an important marker in the increasingly close ties between Washington and New Delhi, the report noted

“Indeed, the relationship between the world’s two largest democracies has been on an upward trajectory for more than two decades, overcoming Cold War antagonism and division over India’s nuclear programme and the country’s testing of a nuclear device in 1998,” it said.

Security ties have deepened dramatically in recent years as both countries are increasingly concerned about the implications of a more assertive China, the report said.

“The US and India are now major defence partners and the two countries have launched a new Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies to enhance cooperation on quantum computing, 5G and 6G networks, space, semiconductors, biotech, and artificial intelligence.”

The report follows up on Chairman Menendez’s 2014 Democratic Staff report, which underscored the importance of increasing diplomatic and development resources in the region.

It offers a comprehensive examination of US diplomatic and development agencies’ investment in the Indo-Pacific region since 2014. It also makes a series of recommendations to advance the administration’s capacity to meet the IPS’ objectives and to enhance US national and economic security.

“In the nine years, two administrations, and numerous strategies since my last report, little progress has been made to advance US diplomacy and development efforts in the Indo-Pacific, all while the PRC continues to expand its influence through aggressive impositions on states’ sovereignty, localized disinformation campaigns, and predatory economic investments,” Menendez said.

“If we are serious about advancing US interests in Asia and competing with the PRC (People’s Republic of China), we must match ambitious policy with ambitious resourcing,” he said.

The report recommends that the Biden Administration must significantly increase funding for diplomatic and development agencies across the US government and dedicate a larger portion of the Department of State operating budget and Washinton’s foreign assistance to advance priorities in the Indo-Pacific.

Congress should be made an active partner to ensure sufficient allocation of resources to the Indo-Pacific, to provide new authorities if and when needed, and to engage in effective oversight, it said.

The Indo-Pacific Strategy must include a substantive and action-oriented economic agenda that is commensurate with US interests and responsive to our allies’ and partners’ calls for increased US economic engagement, it said.

Seeking to deepen engagement with the United States’ network of allies and partners across the region, the report says that the US and its partners must strive to provide alternative financing and economic development projects to compete with China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the Digital Silk Road.

  • ‘Russia will lose war:’ Zelenskyy in historic address to UK lawmakers

‘Russia will lose war:’ Zelenskyy in historic address to UK lawmakers

    [ad_1]

London: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday predicted that Russia would lose the war against his country, and thanked the British people for their support from “Day One” since Moscow’s military offensive.

“I stand before you on behalf of our brave soldiers who are right now under artillery fire,” Zelenskyy said in a rousing address to Parliament, during which he complimented the “strong British character”.

Speaking of his country, Zelenskyy said Ukraine “will always come out on top of evil”.

“This lies at the core of our, and also your, traditions,” he said ahead of his meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

“Russia will lose”, Zelenskyy in a historic address, wearing his trademark olive sweatshirt.

This is his first visit to the UK since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

“We know freedom will win, we know Russia will lose and the victory will change the world,” he declared in his address at Westminster Hall.

To coincide with the visit, Sunak extended UK’s ongoing support to train Ukrainian fighter jet pilots and marines to help upskill their defensive capabilities.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the surprise visit, not announced in advance due to security reasons, will also include an audience with King Charles III.

According to UK government officials, the leaders will discuss a two-pronged approach to Britain’s support for Ukraine, starting with an immediate surge of military equipment to the country to help counter Russia’s “offensive” and reinforced by long-term support.

“President Zelenskyy’s visit to the UK is a testament to his country’s courage, determination and fight, and a testament to the unbreakable friendship between our two countries,” Sunak said.

“Since 2014, the UK has provided vital training to Ukrainian forces, allowing them to defend their country, protect their sovereignty and fight for their territory. I am proud that today we will expand that training from soldiers to marines and fighter jet pilots, ensuring Ukraine has a military able to defend its interests well into the future,” he said.

“It also underlines our commitment to not just provide military equipment for the short term, but a long-term pledge to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine for years to come,” he said.

Downing Street said the bolstered training offer will ensure Ukraine’s pilots are able to fly sophisticated North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) standard fighter jets in the future.

As part of that long-term capability investment, the UK will work with Ukraine and international allies to coordinate collective support to meet Ukraine’s defensive needs.

A training programme for marines will be in addition to the recruit training programme already running in the UK, which has seen 10,000 Ukrainian troops brought to battle readiness in the last six months, and which will upskill a further 20,000 Ukrainian soldiers this year, officials said.

The UK says it will continue to work with the Ukrainian Armed Forces and international community to scale the programme up in 2023.

Last week, Ukrainian troops arrived in the UK to learn how to command Challenger 2 tanks, following the Sunak’s decision to send the main battle tanks to Ukraine.

Under his expanded offer, Sunak will provide Ukraine with longer range capabilities aimed at disrupting Russia’s ability to “continually target Ukraine’s civilian and critical national infrastructure and help relieve pressure on Ukraine’s frontlines”.
During the visit, Zelenskyy and his team will also meet Britain’s defence and security chiefs, including the Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of the Air Staff, to discuss the details of the training programme.

Meanwhile, the UK announced further sanctions on Wednesday in response to Russia’s “continued bombardment of Ukraine, including the targeting of those who have helped [Russian President] Putin build his personal wealth, and companies who are profiting from the Kremlin’s war machine”.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said the latest package hits six entities providing military equipment such as drones for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as eight individuals and one entity connected to nefarious financial networks that help maintain wealth and power amongst Kremlin elites.

Assembly Election: Amit Shah to address rallies in Tripura today

    [ad_1]

Agartala: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address two election rallies in Tripura on Monday.

Shah will address two election rallies at Khowai in the Khowai district and Santirbazar in the South Tripura district. The Union Minister will also join a road show in Agartala city today.

Before Shah’s arrival in the state, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Saturday inspected preparation for Amit Shah’s February 6 rally in the state ahead of the state assembly election.

The Chief Minister visited both the rally spots at Santirbazar in South Tripura and Khowai in the Khowai district in order to ensure that everything was conducted flawlessly.

BJP posted a stunning victory in Tripura in the 2018 Assembly elections, a Left bastion. After its poll victory, BJP appointed Biplab Deb as Tripura’s Chief Minister and in May 2022 appointed Manik Saha for the role.

This is the second visit by the Union Home Minister to the state this year.

Earlier on January 5, he attended two Rath Yatras – one from North Tripura’s Dharmanagar and another from South Tripura’s Sabroom.

Recently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Jagat Prakash Nadda was on his visit to the state where he also addressed the public rally in Amarpur in the Gomati district.

The party is preparing itself to register another win in Tripura and has struck an alliance with its former ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) which has fielded its candidates at five assembly seats.

For the elections at 60 Assembly seats in the northeastern state, which are slated to be held on February 17, the BJP has fielded 55 candidates.

Former CM Manik Sarkar, hailing from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), would also contest the upcoming Assembly polls to the state.

According to party officials, several other BJP leaders will also campaign in the northeastern state. For the first time, 11 women candidates have been given tickets in the state assembly election.
