Karnataka polls: After 4 yrs, Sonia to address public meeting today

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: With just three days left for the campaigning in Karnataka, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be addressing a public meeting in the southern state on Saturday along with her son and party leader Rahul Gandhi.

According to Congress, Sonia Gandhi will be addressing a joint rally with her son in Hubli in the evening.

The area around Hubli has remained a laboratory for Hindutva politics and the Congress has chosen this region for Sonia Gandhi’s public meeting.

    MS Education Academy

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi will be addressing two more public meetings — in Yamakanmardi and Chikodi in Karnataka’s Belagavi — before joining his mother in the third public meeting.

This will be the first election public meeting of Sonia Gandhi, who is currently the Chairperson of Congress Parliamentary Party after May 2019.

Sonia Gandhi addressed the last electoral public meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli on May 2, 2019.

Her last speech at a public meeting was on December 14, 2019 in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan where she spoke in Bharat Bachao Rally.

However, due to health reasons she had participated in several programmes of the party, but has stayed away from the election campaigning and public meetings.

However, Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been campaigning aggressively in karnataka and both of them have jointly held over 40 public meetings and roadshows in the state.

Rahul Gandhi, meanwhile, has not raked up the Adani issue in the Karnataka Assembly polls and has kept his campaigning focused on local issues of corruption, unemployment, etc.

Besides the Gandhi family, even Congress leadership has been holding aggressive campaigning in the state.

The ruling BJP is facing stiff competition from the Congress in the southern state. The Congress has been campaigning aggressively in Karnataka and has cornered the BJP on issues of corruption and several others.

The Congress announced several promises for the people of the state in its manifesto. The party also promised to repeal, within one year of coming to power, “all unjust laws and other anti-people laws” passed by the BJP government in the state.

To woo the voters in the state, Congress announced Gruha Jyothi (200 units of free electricity), Gruha Lakshmi- Rs 2,000 monthly to every woman head of the family, Anna Bhagya – 10 kg of food grains of their choice (among rice, ragi, jowar, millet) to every person in a BPL family.

It also promised that the party is committed to take a firm and decisive action against individuals and organisations spreading hatred amongst communities on grounds of caste or religion. It also said that it will ban any organisation like Bajrang Dal and PFI, if they try to spread hatred.

BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have cornered Congress on its decision to ban Bajrang Dal in Karnataka.

Elections for the 224-member Assembly is scheduled on May 10 and counting of votes will take place on May 13.

New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that a committee headed by the cabinet secretary would be constituted to explore administrative steps for addressing some concerns of same-sex couples without going into the issue of legalising their marriage.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, told a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, which is hearing a batch of pleas seeking legal validation of same-sex marriage, that the government is positive about the suggestion for exploring administrative steps in this regard.

He told the bench, which also comprised justices S K Kaul, S R Bhat, Hima Kohli and P S Narasimha, that this will need coordination between more than one ministries.

On the seventh day of hearing in the matter, Mehta said the petitioners can give their suggestions on the issue of exploring what administrative steps can be taken in this regard.

While hearing the matter on April 27, the apex court had asked the Centre whether social welfare benefits can be granted to same-sex couples without going into legalising their marriage.

The court had posed the question after observing that the Centre’s acceptance of right to cohabitation of same sex partners as a fundamental right cast a “corresponding duty” on it to recognise its social consequences.

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will visit Hyderabad on May 8 to address a public meeting on the problems of unemployed in Telangana.

The party sources said she would arrive here from Karnataka where she is campaigning for the May 10 Assembly elections.

The public meeting will be held at Saroornagar grounds. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has started making arrangements for the meeting.

    MS Education Academy

With Assembly elections in Telangana scheduled later this year, the Congress party is gearing up for the battle. The meeting by Priyanka Gandhi is seen as part of the party’s efforts to get into the poll mode.

The meeting is expected to strengthen the Congress party’s ongoing statewide movement over the problems of unemployed in the wake of Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) exam paper leak.

As part of the activities undertaken by the state Congress on unemployment and the TSPSC paper leak issues, protests were held in Nalgonda, Khammam, Adilabad and other places.

At the May 8 public meeting, Priyanka Gandhi would join the state Congress leaders in highlighting the failures of KCR-led BRS government in the state.

State Congress president and MP A. Revanth Reddy said they will also explain what his party is going to do for the youth after coming to power at the Centre and in the state.

The Congress chief alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao have failed to provide jobs and employment opportunities to the youth in the country and Telangana.

The Congress party has been demanding the TSPSC question paper leak case should be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The special investigation team (SIT) of Telangana Police is currently probing the case.

The chair of the Republican National Committee said Sunday that Republicans must directly address abortion if they hope to succeed in 2024.

“Abortion was a big issue in key states like Michigan and Pennsylvania, and so the guidance we’re going to to give to our candidates is, you to have to address this head-on,” RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel said during an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” referring to the outcome of the 2022 midterms.

“The Democrats spent 360 million on this, and many of our candidates across the board refused to talk about it, thinking, ‘Oh we can just talk about the economy and ignore this big issue,’ and they can’t.”

As part of his two-day visit to the state, Modi will first tour Humnabad of Bidar district, and then head to Vijayapur after which he will reach Belagavi later in the afternoon.

He will reach Bengaluru by the evening and take part in the mega roadshow from NICE Road to Sumanahalli Junction.

    MS Education Academy

The Prime Minister will spend the night at the Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru.

On Sunday, he is slated to address a huge public rally in Kolar and also visit Channapatna, where former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is contesting from and holding a mega public meeting.

Modi will later reach the historical Beluru town in Hassan district, the stronghold of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda’s family.

In the evening, he will be in Mysuru and hold a mega road show from Vidyapeetha circle to Bannimantap.

The state’s ruling BJP government is relying heavily on Modi’s visit and is planning to rope in some 2 lakh people for each public rally. In the north, his visit is expected to counter rebellion and keep the Lingayat vote bank intact for the party.

In the south, the BJP wants to consolidate its position and break the stronghold of the JD (S) and Congress in the districts of Kolar, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur.

Also on Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also take up high-voltage campaigning in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

He will hold a roadshow in Madikeri city and ampaign with BJP workers in Udupi and Kapu.

Shah is expected to attend another roadshow in Byndoor constituency and address a mega public rally in Mangaluru in the evening.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi will arrive in Dharwad and hold a roadshow in Kundagol.

She will address a huge public rally in Navalgund near Dharwad and also take part in a public meeting at Dandeli in Haliyal, Uttara Kannada district.

  • Nikki Haley promised to address abortion ‘directly and openly.’ Then she didn’t.

Nikki Haley promised to address abortion ‘directly and openly.’ Then she didn’t.

    [ad_1]

    election 2024 haley 78725

One area in which Haley was clear, however, was her expectation that nothing far-reaching would hit her desk, should she end up in the White House. “We have to face this reality. The pro-life laws that have passed in strongly Republican states will not be approved at the federal level,” Haley said. “That’s just a fact.”

Haley’s struggle to articulate a clear position on abortion in an address that was billed as a chance to do just that highlights how fraught the issue is for Republicans on the national campaign trail. GOP candidates have lost a number of races to Democrats who championed abortion rights in the post-Dobbs era, and, over the past few weeks, presidential aspirants have walked on eggshells when discussing the topic.

Haley is seeking to position herself as a candidate uniquely capable of tackling the debate. On Tuesday, she spoke from her own perspective as a woman and mother — identities unmatched among a slate of male Republican opponents. Haley said her husband’s adoption out of foster care as a young child and her own struggle with infertility made her opposed to abortion — “not because the Republican Party told me to be.” She discussed her friend’s rape and subsequent fear of becoming pregnant.

“I don’t judge someone who is pro-choice any more than I want them to judge me for being pro-life,” said Haley, who as governor of South Carolina, signed a law restricting abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

While Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life, attended the address and called Haley “a remarkable leader,” others in the movement were left wanting. After Haley finished, prominent anti-abortion activist Lila Rose called the speech “disappointing” and “not what pro-life voters are looking for.”

Haley’s address Tuesday came hours before Vice President Kamala Harris was scheduled to join abortion rights groups in D.C. for a “rally for reproductive freedom,” an event celebrating a Supreme Court decision to temporarily block a lower court’s restriction of access to abortion pill mifepristone.

In an interview Monday, Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, stressed the need for candidates to show “boldness in communicating” their positions on abortion laws. Dannenfelser has maintained that her organization will oppose Republican presidential candidates who don’t embrace, at minimum, a national 15-week limit on abortions. A week prior, the group had taken the extraordinary step of criticizing former president Donald Trump for saying that he believed abortion policy should be left to the states, essentially swearing off support for any federal legislation.

That had left an opening for Haley. But as Dannenfelser looked on during Haley’s speech Tuesday, the former governor and United Nations ambassador didn’t articulate the extent to which she believes the federal government should go in restricting abortion access. In fact, Haley downplayed the likelihood of any highly restrictive national law being passed, noting that the Senate lacks the votes. Haley instead noted policies that she believes most Americans can agree on, including opposing “abortion up to the point of birth” or jailing women who receive abortions.

Afterward, a spokesperson for Haley clarified that she has not called for a 15-week national restriction, even as SBA released a statement applauding Haley’s pledge to do so. An SBA spokesperson told POLITICO that Haley “has assured us that she will commit to 15 weeks.”

Later, a person familiar with the conversation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Haley privately told SBA officials “exactly what she said in her speech today,” and did not commit to a 15-week law, but rather only to “find a consensus to ban late-term abortion.”

“I think that potential Republican voters are getting to know each of the candidates, and they deserve to know exactly where they stand on this issue, which is at its peak of importance given the overturning of Roe v. Wade,” Dannenfelser said in the interview.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who hasn’t yet officially declared his candidacy but has launched an exploratory committee, spent days earlier this month publicly working through his answer to the abortion question, initially declining to provide any specifics before agreeing he would sign a national law limiting the procedure to 20 weeks, a measure he has supported in the Senate. Later, Scott said he would sign “the most conservative pro-life legislation” Congress would pass.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has been perhaps the clearest on his intentions to restrict the procedure if elected president, saying last month he would support a six-week federal limit. More recently, Pence has floated a 15-week restriction as something that should be “part and parcel of debate.”

Vivek Ramaswamy, another Republican seeking the nomination, in an interview Monday said he has been “unapologetically pro-life” since high school, as well as an “unapologetic defender of the Constitution.” And he said he believes abortion is a “form of murder,” but shouldn’t be regulated federally.

“Federal law does not govern murder. State laws do,” Ramaswamy said.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, an as-of-yet-undeclared presidential hopeful, drew national headlines this month for signing into law an abortion prohibition after six weeks, though he has shied away from commenting on what kind of national abortion law he would support as president. DeSantis failed to tout his state’s new wide-reaching abortion restriction when he spoke the following day at Liberty University, the nation’s leading evangelical Christian college.

Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, another candidate, has said he would support a national ban on the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Jim McLaughlin, a Republican pollster whose clients include Trump, suggested there’s wisdom to Trump walking a fine line between touting his past accomplishments for anti-abortion activists, while leaving the door open to appeal to abortion-rights supporters going forward.

“I think President Trump, you know, he could take credit with the pro-life movement because it was his judges that have changed the laws, and they’ve been making progress,” McLaughlin said. “But I also think … pro-choice voters do not feel threatened with Donald Trump’s position on abortion. So I think he’s got the best of both worlds there.”

Adam Wren contributed to this story.

Karnataka: PM Modi to address rally on April 30, ahead of polls

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a massive public rally on April 30 at Channapatna in Karnataka’s Ramnagar district ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled to be held in the southern state on May 10, a BJP leader said on Saturday.

A party leader said that the BJP is aiming at winning more seats in certain parts of the state where it does not enjoy a significant stronghold.

Former Karnataka chief minister and Janata Dal-Secular leader H.D. Kumaraswamy is contesting from the Channapatna constituency. The BJP has fielded former minister C.P. Yogeshwar from this seat. Political analysts believe the constituency would witness a direct contest between the JD-S and the BJP.

    MS Education Academy

Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy is contesting from the neighbouring Ramnagar constituency. The region is considered as a bastion of the JD-S.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has planned a mega rally in Channapatna.

Preparations are currently underway at Shettihalli village.

According to sources, a huge stage and shelter is being erected to accommodate 2-3 lakh people. The BJP workers will be roped in from the neighbouring districts of Tumakuru, Mandya and Mysuru.

Yogeshwar on Saturday said there would be no road show this time in Channapatna. “The programme is scheduled to take place for about 2 hours. The party wants to win more seats in the old Mysuru region (south Karnataka),” he said.

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be addressing a public rally at Chevella near here on April 23, BJP sources said on Saturday.

His visit is part of ‘Parliament Prabhas Yojana’ programme, they said.

Shah is likely to meet some of the key members of blockbuster ‘RRR’ movie team during his visit. The BJP leader is expected to felicitate the film crew for winning the coveted Oscar award.

    MS Education Academy

The ‘Naatu Naatu’ song of ‘RRR’ won the Academy Award in the Best Original Song category at this year’s event.

A senior party leader said Shah always tries to meet with celebrities wherever he goes and as part of that the minister met actors Junior NTR and Nithin, among others during his earlier visits last year.

BJP sources said the saffron party will work with increased focus in Telangana and step up its campaign once the Assembly polls are over in neighbouring Karnataka on May 10.

The political one-upmanship between the ruling BRS and BJP has reached new heights during recent times with the war of words between the two parties becoming almost a daily affair.

The BJP has been making efforts to emerge as the alternative to BRS and the national party has had reasonable success in a couple of Assembly bypolls and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election during the last three years.

Gautam Navlakha moves SC seeking change of address for house arrest

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Activist Gautam Navlakha, who was ordered to be kept under house arrest in a public library in Mumbai in connection with the Elgar Parishad-Maoist link case, on Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking a change of address.

A bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna was told by counsel for Navlakha, that the place, where he is under house arrest, is a public library and needs to be vacated.

“All I am seeking is change of address in Mumbai”, Navlakha’s counsel said, requesting for urgent hearing.

    MS Education Academy

Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, who was appearing in another matter in the court, said he had no idea about the mentioning of the application and sought time to respond to it.

The bench said it will take up the matter for hearing on next Friday.

On November 10, last year, the top court allowed Navlakha, who was then lodged in Navi Mumbai’s Taloja prison in connection with the case, to be placed under house arrest owing to his deteriorating health.

Noting the activist has been in custody since April 14, 2020, and prima facie there is no reason to reject his medical report, it had said Navlakha does not have any criminal background except this case and even the Government of India had appointed him as interlocutor to hold talks with Maoists.

The case relates to alleged inflammatory speeches made at the Elgar Parishad conclave held in Pune on December 31, 2017, which the police claim triggered violence the next day near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial on the outskirts of the western Maharashtra city.
