11 advocates, 2 judicial officers elevated as additional judges of 3 HCs

New Delhi: A total of 11 advocates and two judicial officers were on Monday appointed as additional judges in the high courts of Allahabad, Karnataka and Madras.
Law Minister Kiren Rijiju announced the fresh appointments on Twitter and extended his best wishes to them.
Those appointed include six for the Allahabad High Court, five for the Madras High Court and two for the Karnataka High Court.
Two of the additional judges appointed to the Madras HC are judicial officers.
The names of some of them were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium last month.
One of those appointed to the Madras High Court is advocate Lekshmana Chandra Victoria Gowri whose reported affiliation to the BJP had triggered a controversy.
Some lawyers had recently asked the Collegium to recall its recommendation for Gowri alleging her affiliation. Some other lawyers had supported her elevation, citing hard work and her commitment to the profession.
Additional judges are usually appointed for a period of two years before being elevated as permanent judges.

NSE, BSE put 3 Adani Group companies under short-term additional surveillance measure

New Delhi: As many as three Adani group companies, including Adani Enterprises, have come under short-term additional surveillance measure (ASM) framework of the BSE and NSE, according to the latest data available with the exchanges on Thursday.
Apart from Adani Enterprises, the other two firms listed by the exchanges are — Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone and Ambuja Cements.
The parameters for shortlisting securities under ASM include high-low variation, client concentration, number of price band hits, close-to-close price variation and price-earning ratio.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE said these companies have satisfied the criteria for inclusion in short-term additional surveillance measure or ASM.
Under the short-term ASM, the exchanges said, “applicable rate of margin shall be 50 per cent or existing margin whichever is higher, subject to maximum rate of margin capped at 100 per cent, with effect from February 6, 2023 on all open positions as on February 3, 2023 and new positions created from February 6, 2023”.
Market experts believe that putting in this framework means intra-day trading would require 100 per cent upfront margin.
The exchanges also noted that the shortlisting of securities under ASM is purely on account of market surveillance, and it should not be construed as an adverse action against the concerned company or entity.
Meanwhile, shares of Adani Enterprises tumbled over 26 per cent on Thursday, a day after the firm said it has decided not to go ahead with its Rs 20,000-crore Follow-on Public Offer (FPO) and will return the proceeds to investors. The counter had plunged more than 28 per cent on Wednesday.

Most of the other group firms also declined for the sixth day in a row on Thursday and 10 listed Adani Group firms have faced a combined erosion of over Rs 8.76 lakh crore in past six days.
Adani Group stocks have taken a beating on the bourses after US-based Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations in a report, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation at the Gautam Adani-led group. Adani Group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

Two additional judges appointed to Karnataka High Court

New Delhi: Two additional judges were on Saturday appointed to the Karnataka High Court.
Law Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted to announce the appointment of Ramachandra Dattatray Huddar and Venkatesh Naik Thavaryanaik as the additional judges.
Additional judges are usually appointed for a period of two years before being elevated as permanent judges.
According to the law ministry’s website, as on January 2, while the sanctioned strength of the Karnataka High Court was 62, it had 13 vacancies.

White House announces additional sanctions against Russia’s Wagner Group

The spokesperson added that Wagner “is becoming a rival power center to the Russian military and other Russian ministries,” with an estimated 50,000 personnel deployed to Ukraine, including 10,000 contractors and 40,000 convicts.
Kirby also revealed new imagery of Russian railcars traveling to North Korea and back, in what the U.S. believes was North Korea providing arms and ammunition to the Wagner Group. The arms transfer is in direct violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, Kirby said, and the U.S. on Friday shared information on these violations with the council’s Democratic People’s Republic of Korea sanctions committee.
“With these actions, and there will be more to come, our message to any company that is considering providing support to Wagner is simply this: Wagner is a criminal organization that is committing widespread atrocities and human rights abuses, and we will work relentlessly to identify, disrupt, expose and target those who are assisting Wagner,” Kirby said.
