Jailed Putin foe Navalny says he’s facing additional charges in Russia

    [ad_1]

    russia opposition sentences 73954

It signifies the continuation of a trend that has seen critics of Putin and his regime subject to ever harsher prison sentences amid the escalation of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Navalny is serving an 11 ½ year prison term. In February 2021, he was sentenced to two years and eight months for violating the terms of probation from an earlier sentence. An additional nine years were tacked on in March 2022 for what critics say are trumped up charges of fraud and contempt of court. He’s long been a thorn in the side of Putin and the Russian ruling elite.

He ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Moscow in 2013 and president of Russia in 2017, the latter campaign ended when the country’s Central Election Commission barred him from challenging Putin due to a fraud conviction he called politically motivated. And his 2021 film, “Putin’s Palace,” released with Navalny already behind bars, garnered 93 million views within a week of its arrival on YouTube.

As Putin has continued Russia’s war in Ukraine, Navalny and allies that have spoken out against it have run afoul of new laws criminalizing dissent. Fellow activist Vladimir Kara-Murza was earlier this month sentenced to 25 years in a “strict regime” penal colony for a cocktail of charges including “discrediting the armed forces” and treason. It is likely the longest sentence doled out by Russian authorities for political activities since the collapse of the Soviet Union, according to Leon Aron in POLITICO.

Fellow opposition leader Ilya Yashin was handed an 8 ½ year prison term in December 2022 for posts he made denouncing the treatment of Ukrainians by Russian troops in May. Also on Wednesday, a court in Yekaterinburg convened a trial of the city’s former Mayor, Yevgeny Roizman, who faces charges for critiquing the country’s invasion.

Navalny has languished in Russian prisons since shortly after he returned to the country from Germany in January 2021 after recovering from an assassination attempt he attributed to the Putin regime. His daughter, Daria, told CNN that authorities are now depriving him of food.

And he faces an additional trial on terrorism charges in connection with an April bombing in St. Petersburg that killed pro-war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky, according to the Associated Press. Navalny was behind bars at the time of the attack.

“For this criminal case, the military court will try me separately,” Navalny said in remarks reposted on his own Twitter account and translated from Russian.

  • UAE approves additional $1 billion funding to Pakistan: Finance Minister Dar

UAE approves additional $1 billion funding to Pakistan: Finance Minister Dar

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday announced that the UAE has approved USD 1 billion in financial support, taking the cash-strapped nation a step closer to unlocking the crucial IMF bailout.

Pakistan is tackling a major economic crisis as it awaits a much-needed USD 1.1 billion tranche of funding from the Washington-based International Monetary Fund, part of a USD 6.5 billion bailout package the IMF approved in 2019.

Finance Minister Dar said the Gulf nation has confirmed its commitment to the International Monetary Fund, paving way for the staff-level agreement to unlock a USD 1.1 billion loan by the global lender.

    MS Education Academy

“UAE authorities have confirmed to IMF for their bilateral support of USD 1 billion to Pakistan,” Dar said in a tweet, adding that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) was now “engaged for needful documentation for taking the said deposit from UAE authorities”.

The UAE rolled over its deposits of USD 2 billion in January this year too, providing critical support to cash-starved Pakistan’s depleting foreign exchange reserves.

In another tweet, Dar announced that the apex bank is getting the third and last disbursement from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), worth USD 300 million, out of its USD 1.3 billion loan.

“Out of Chinese bank’s ICBC approved facility of USD 1.3bn (which was earlier repaid by Pakistan), State Bank of Pakistan would receive back third and last disbursement today in its account amounting to USD 300mn,” the finance minister tweeted.

The ICBC approved a rollover of a USD 1.3 billion loan for Pakistan on March 3 and made the first payment of USD 500 million on the same day, while the second payment of the same amount was made on March 17.

The IMF lowered its forecast for Pakistan’s economic growth rate days ago from 2 per cent to just 0.5 per cent for the current fiscal year amid high inflation and a growing unemployment rate in the cash-strapped country.

The new development brought debt-struck Pakistan closer to signing the staff-level agreement with the IMF and getting access to multilateral loans.

Pakistan is tethering on the verge of default with just over USD 4 billion in reserves as it grapples with high external debt and a weak local currency.
All its hopes are tied to the IMF reviving the USD 7 billion bailout programme and releasing a USD 1.1 billion tranche, originally due to be disbursed in November last year.

The funds are part of a USD 6.5 billion bailout package the IMF approved in 2019, which analysts say is critical if Pakistan is to avoid defaulting on external debt obligations.

The IMF programme, signed in 2019, will expire on June 30, 2023, and under the set guidelines, the programme cannot be extended beyond the deadline.

Pakistan and the IMF have been negotiating the programme’s resumption for months but have yet to reach an agreement.

  • Airtel Launches Family Offerings With Free Additional SIMs To Counter Reliance Jio – Kashmir News

Airtel Launches Family Offerings With Free Additional SIMs To Counter Reliance Jio – Kashmir News

    [ad_1]

Competition is rapidly intensifying in the higher revenue-generating postpaid mobile business segment. Bharti Airtel has just launched a new postpaid family plan variant, priced aggressively at Rs 599, and also unveiled two new variants of its all-in-one Airtel Black plans priced at Rs 799 and Rs 998, in moves clearly aimed at fortifying its postpaid family offerings and countering Reliance Jio.

The Sunil Mittal-led telco’s latest postpaid offerings come on the heels of its recent unlimited 5G data offer (launched last Friday) that was also aimed to hold on to its higher-paying postpaid flock and take on Jio’s new postpaid plans announced last week.

Airtel’s new Rs 599 postpaid family plan, which will directly counter Jio’s recently launched Rs 699 premium family postpaid offer, allows users to add up to two extra SIM cards to the plan at no additional cost. The new family plan variant also includes Amazon Prime/Disney Hotstar subscriptions, a 105 GB monthly data allowance and data rollovers. It is also a composite price postpaid pack with no hidden costs towards deposits, taxes or activation.

The new Airtel Black pack variants, priced at Rs 799 and Rs 998, also allow users to add two extra postpaid SIMs (read: mobile connections) at no additional cost and include over-the-top (OTT) content via Amazon Prime/Disney Hotstar subscriptions and a 105 GB monthly data allowance. Further, the Airtel Black plan priced at Rs 799 offers a DTH connection while the more premium Rs 998 variant comes with a broadband connection (but no DTH). Both plans will allow consumers to accumulate unused monthly data, via rollovers. The company, though, will keep the base Airtel Black plan, priced at Rs 699, which continues to offer broadband and DTH, but won’t offer extra SIMs available on the new higher-priced variants.

At present, around 6% of Airtel’s over 332 million subscribers use postpaid plans, while it’s roughly 10% of Vi’s 228.6 million users. For Jio, its postpaid base is under 5% of its overall 430 million-plus subscriber base.

“The new Rs 599 family plan and the new Airtel Black variants are aimed at broadening the company’s bouquet of family postpaid offerings, growing its postpaid user base and boosting ARPU.” a top Airtel executive told ET. He added that Airtel’s new postpaid plan variants with the additional SIMs offerings, are being primarily targeted at delivering more value to smallish young families where some members may be working away from their hometowns.

Jio’s recently launched Rs 699 family postpaid plan includes Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions. But users will have to shell out an extra Rs 99 for each additional SIM. Last Tuesday, Jio had also unveiled two new individual and family postpaid plans, starting at Rs 299 and Rs 399, respectively. The Rs 399 Jio plan allows postpaid users to add up to three extra SIM cards, but each at a cost of Rs 99.

Analysts said Airtel’s two-stage counter is aimed at thwarting market leader, Jio from poaching its higher revenue-generating postpaid users.

Airtel’s initial unlimited 5G data offer was made available to all postpaid users as well as prepaid ones with data plans of Rs 239 and above, encouraging its 4G users to upgrade to the next-gen wireless broadband service. ( ET Telecom)
