Adani Power Limited starts supplying thermal power to Bangladesh

    [ad_1]

Godda: Adani Power Limited (APL), which is a part of the Adani Group, informed on Sunday about the start of its first 800 MW ultra-super-critical thermal power generation unit at Godda district in Jharkhand, and has also started supplying Bangladesh with 748 MW of power.

The APL stated in a release, “The electricity supplied from Godda will significantly improve the situation in the neighbouring country as it will replace expensive power generated from liquid fuel, bringing down the average cost of power purchased”.

The CEO of Adani Power Limited, SB Khyalia, said in a release, that the Godda Power Plant is a “strategic asset” in India-Bangladesh’s long-standing relationship.

    MS Education Academy

“It will ease the power supply in Bangladesh, making its industries and ecosystem more competitive. It is going to be the most efficient and environment-friendly thermal power plant installed in India and the entire South-East region and also one of the best in class in the world. It is the first power plant in the country, which has started its operations from Day One with 100% Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD), SCR and Zero Water Discharge,” the release added.

Adani Power further stated in the release that, in November 2017, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) executed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with APL’s wholly-owned subsidiary Adani Power Jharkhand Limited (APJL) to procure 1,496 MW net capacity power from 2X800 MW ultra-supercritical power project at Godda.

“India’s largest power producer in the private sector is expected to commission its second 800 MW unit soon,” the release stated.

According to the release, Bangladesh has one of the largest liquid fuel-based power generation plants in the Indian sub-continent region. The installed capacity of heavy fuel oil (HFO)-based plants is about 6,329 MW and high-speed diesel (HSD)-based plants is about 1,290 MW, totalling to over 7,600 MW.

As per BPDB’s annual report for the financial year 2021-22, the total tariff of HFO-based plants is around BDT 22.10/kWh (USC 21/KWh) and the total tariff of HSD-based power plants is around BDT 154.11/kWh (USC 149/KWh), which is far higher than the tariff of Godda Power Plant (Energy cost estimated to be around 9 cents/KWh). Though at present, Bangladesh has long-term PPA ties with three other imported coal-based generators, the total tariff of Godda TPP is competitive compared to peers, the release further stated.

Notably, APL’s announcement on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Friday, read, “This is to inform that Unit 1 of 800 MW capacity of the 2×800 MW ultra-supercritical power project of Adani Power (Jharkhand) Limited (APJL), situated in Godda district in Jharkhand, has achieved commercial operations. APJL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Power Limited, will supply power under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a corresponding net capacity of 748 MW from Unit 1 to the Bangladesh Power Development Board. Pursuant to the above, APJL has started processing its claims under the PPA with effect from April 6, 2023”.

APL stated in the release, that despite “several challenges”, including unprecedented waves of COVID-19, APJL had successfully synchronised the first unit with the power grid of Bangladesh on 29 November 2022 through a dedicated transmission line from Godda to Bangladesh in the presence of representatives from the government of Bangladesh.

Subsequently, the requisite transmission evacuation system on the Bangladesh side was commissioned in March 2023.

Accordingly, APJL again synchronised the unit 1 on 20 March 2023. The Reliability Run Test, including Commercial Operation Tests, was completed on 5 April 2023 in the presence of competent authority from BPDB and Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh (PGCB) officials, the release added.

“The Godda Power Plant comprises two units of the latest technology available in the world, which is ‘Ultra Super Critical Technology’ with latest techniques for controlling emissions and consumption of coal and water. The Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) have been installed in the plant to minimise the emission and meet the latest environment norms of the ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEF). This plant is going to be one its kind in India and in Bangladesh, operating on the latest environment emission norms,” the APL further stated in the release.

Himanta says he will file defamation case against Rahul over his ‘Adani’ tweet

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said he will file a defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over a tweet that linked him to the Adani group.

Addressing a press conference here, Sarma said the defamation case will be filed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Guwahati on April 14.

“Whatever Rahul Gandhi tweeted, it’s defamatory. We will respond after the PM leaves the state,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

“Definitely, a defamation case will be filed in Guwahati,” he added.

Gandhi on Saturday took a swipe at some leaders who have quit the Congress in recent years and some of whom have joined the BJP as he kept up his offensive against the government over the Adani issue.

“They hide the truth, that’s why they mislead everyday! The question remains the same – whose Rs 20,000 crore benami money is in Adani’s companies?” Gandhi asked in a tweet in Hindi, sharing an image with ‘Adani’ written as an acronym of sorts with letters of the names of the leaders.

He cited the names of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Kiran Kumar Reddy and Anil K Antony in his tweet. After quitting the Congress, Azad formed his own party, while the rest joined the BJP. Scindia is now a Union minister and Sarma the chief minister of Assam.

Quoting Gandhi’s tweet, Sarma had earlier tweeted, “It was our decency to have never asked you, on where have you concealed the proceeds of crime from the Bofors and National Herald Scams. And how you allowed Ottavio Quattrocchi to escape the clutches of Indian justice multiple times. Any way we will meet in the Court of Law (sic).”

PM Modi will visit Guwahati to attend a host of programmes, including the state’s attempt to create a record on Bihu with over 11,000 dancers and drummers.

Adani hard-working, down to earth: Sharad Pawar in 2015 autobiography

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: NCP chief Sharad Pawar may have broken ranks with other opposition parties on the Adani issue, but his friendship with Gautam Adani dates back to nearly two decades when the businessman was exploring expansion into the coal sector.

In his Marathi autobiography ‘Lok Maze Saangati ‘ published in 2015, Pawar has lavished praise on Adani describing him as “hard-working, simple, down to earth” and with ambition to make big in the infrastructure sector.

The veteran leader also wrote that it was at his insistence that Adani ventured into the thermal power sector.

    MS Education Academy

Pawar recounts in the book how Adani built his corporate empire from scratch starting as a salesman in Mumbai locals, dabbling in small ventures before trying his luck in the diamond industry.

“He was earning well in the diamond industry, but Gautam was not interested in that. He had ambitions to enter the infrastructure sector. He had good relations with Gujarat Chief Minister Chimanbhai Patel and had submitted a proposal to develop a port at Mundhra,” the NCP chief wrote.

He recalled that Patel had warned Adani of the port being closer to the Pakistan border and in an arid region. “Despite the adversities, he accepted the challenge”.

Pawar wrote that later Adani made his foray in the coal sector and it was at his suggestion that the businessman ventured into the thermal power sector.

Pawar, who was the then Union Agriculture Minister, said he had made the suggestion to Adani during a function to mark the death anniversary of NCP leader Praful Patel’s father at Gondiya in Maharashtra.

“Gautam acknowledged my suggestion in his speech. Usually, nothing much happens on statements made from the podium, but Gautam pursued the matter and established a 3,000 MW thermal power plant in Bhandara,” the former Maharashtra chief minister said.

In the book, Pawar recounts how he developed close ties with several businessmen as he sought to usher in development in Maharashtra during his decades-long political career.

The NCP chief said he remained in regular touch with business leaders who could meet him without appointment daily between 2 pm and 4 pm during his tenure as the chief minister.

Pawar recounted his arrangement with the then Gujarat chief minister Chimanbhai Patel, who would divert big projects to Maharashtra. Pawar said he reciprocated the gesture by sending some small projects to Gujarat, an arrangement that ensured the two states scaled greater heights on the economic front.

Pawar has also written about how he helped Hyundai Motors set up a manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu after the Korean carmaker faced some hurdles in setting up business in Maharashtra during the Shiv Sena-BJP rule.

Amid a strident opposition campaign demanding an investigation into the Adani Group by a Joint Parliamentary Committee, Pawar surprised his fellow opposition leaders by favouring a probe into the dealings of the Gujarat-based business house by a Supreme Court-appointed panel.

Pawar also came out in support of the Adani Group and criticised the narrative around Hindenburg Research’s report on the conglomerate, saying that he felt that the business group was “targeted” and that he was not aware of the antecedents of the US-based short-selling firm.

Pawar has charted a different course than the Congress on issues such as criticism of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and the Adani Group.

Kharge sets wheels of opposition unity moving, despite divergence on Adani

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: At a time when Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar, a Congress ally in Maharashtra, has expressed doubts over Opposition’s demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the allegations of financial irregularities levelled against the Adani Group, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge is leaving no stone unturned to gloss over the issue and project a united Opposition face in the run-up to next year’s Lok Sabha polls.

“I feel that instead of a JPC, a Supreme Court-appointed commission is more reliable and independent,” Pawar said.

Amid all these developments, taking the first step to unite the Opposition parties, Kharge recently rang leaders of various like-minded parties, including DMK’s M.K. Stalin, Nitish Kumar of the JD(U) and Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (UBT), inviting them for a meeting in Delhi next month to formalise a common agenda.

    MS Education Academy

With Opposition leadership being a core issue as the Trinamool Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and parties like the Samajwadi Party might not accept the Congress leading the front, Kharge has tried to clear the matter by stating that there should not be an obsession over leadership among the Opposition parties.

“The issue of leadership will arise when the time is ripe. It will be a collective decision. We will unitedly fight the polls as people are fed up with the Modi government’s policies,” Kharge said.

Also, on BJP attacking the Congress over dynasty politics, Kharge said that since 1998, no Gandhi family member has been either a Prime Minister or a minister.

“The Gandhi family has been agitating on people’s issues for the past many years while others are just enjoying themselves,” Kharge said.

He added that all the issues to be raised in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls will be discussed at an appropriate time.

Meanwhile, BRS leader and Rajya Sabha MP K. Keshava Rao said that though his party has been politically distant from the Congress, it is with the main Opposition party on certain issues.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has also said that he is waiting for the Congress to take the initiative to bring the Opposition together.

On Pawar saying that a Supreme Court monitored probe is enough on the ongoing Adani row, the Congress was quick to respond that it is his personal opinion and the entire Opposition wants a JPC.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “The NCP may have its view, but 19 like-minded Opposition parties are convinced that the Adani Group issue is real and very serious. But the Opposition is united and will be together in saving the Constitution and our democracy from the BJP’s assaults and in defeating the BJP’s divisive and destructive political, social and economic agenda.”

The Shiv Sena was also quick to say that Pawar’s statement will not cause any harm to the MVA in Maharashtra.

Although the first step has been taken for Opposition unity, there are still miles to go.

Nitish refuses to join issue with Pawar on Adani

    [ad_1]

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday refused to join the issue with NCP president Sharad Pawar, who has caused a flutter with a contrarian stance on the opposition’s demand for a JPC probe into allegations against the Adani Group.

The JD(U) supreme leader, whose party, in Parliament, has been supporting the demand for a joint parliamentary committee probe, however, did not seem impressed with the Maratha strongman’s preference for an investigation by a “Supreme Court-appointed Committee”.

“I learnt about it from the media”, quipped the Bihar CM when he was asked about the stance adopted by Pawar, whom he had met last year as part of efforts to galvanize parties opposed to the BJP.

    MS Education Academy

“It is for him (Pawar) to elaborate on what he has said. Different people have different opinions”, added Kumar, who had by his side JD(U) national president Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan, the Munger MP who was among those in news for outbursts on the Adani issue during the recently held Parliament session.

In an interview with NDTV, Pawar came out in support of the Adani Group and criticised the narrative around the US-based Hindenburg Research’s report on the conglomerate.

Pawar said he favoured a Supreme Court committee to probe allegations against the Adani Group, since the ruling party would have a majority in the JPC based on numerical strength in Parliament and this would lead to doubts on such an investigation.

The Adani Group has denied the fraud and manipulation charges made by Hindenburg Research against its companies that triggered an unprecedented stock crash.

Kumar, who was attending an ‘Iftar’ hosted here by his party, was also asked about the recent communal riots in Sasaram and Bihar Sharif towns.

“The administrative machinery is at work in both places. Those who have suffered losses of any type will be provided help and relief,” Kumar said.

Congress accuses Adani Group of having links with Chinese firm

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday accused the Adani Group of having business links with a Chinese company in all its infrastructure projects in roads, railways, ports and airport sectors, saying it posed a threat to national security.

The remarks prompted Law Minister Kiren Rijiju to hit back at the opposition party.

Responding to a tweet by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Rijiju said, “Do not comment on sensitive matters. The Congress has no moral right to speak about Arunachal Pradesh.”

    MS Education Academy

Ramesh had alleged that business tycoon Gautam Adani has business links with Chinese citizens. He wondered whether it was compromising national security.

The law minister also shared a video in which the then defence minister A K Antony is purportedly telling Lok Sabha that for long India had a policy not to develop borders as an undeveloped border was safer than a developed border.

“First respond to this reality,” Rijiju, who represents Arunachal Pradesh in the Lok Sabha, said.

Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the company, fully owned by a Chinese national — Chang Chian Ting — was a subcontractor for the Adani Group and is a partner of Adani’s brother.

The Adani Group has not made any comments on the charges made by the Congress yet.

The firm had earlier denied indulging in wrongdoing.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also cited a media report and said on Twitter, “PMC Projects – Pradhan Mantri Chinese’ Projects?”

“Why are India’s critical ports, airstrips, railway tracks and electricity lines being built and controlled by a Chinese company?” he asked.

Shrinate said China made several transgressions along the border on the Indian side and killed 20 of our soldiers.

It changed names of places in Arunachal Pradesh thrice, but the links that a Chinese-owned company has with the Adani Group shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special relationship with China. “This is totally anti-national,” she said.

“If this is not a threat to national security, then what is?” she added.

The Congress spokesperson further alleged that Modi gave a clean chit to China because of “this relationship” and that is why, he has not broken his silence yet on either China or the Adani issue.

“The veil now stands lifted,” she said, and asked, “When will the government hold a probe into the Chinese company?”

Shrinate also asked the government to find the source of Rs 20,000 crore alleged to have been found deposited in “shell companies” of the Adani Group.

AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, “Everyday the reason for the PM’s eloquent silence on Chinese is becoming evident. This is largely because of Adani’s intimate links to China. We had mentioned this first on March 3 in the ‘Hum Adanike Hain Kaun’ series and today there are further revelations.”

Congress leader Amitabh Dubey also said the Congress has asked several questions on China and the Adani issue, but the government is yet to break its silence.

“Now this is an issue of national security and they will have to reply,” he said.

The Karaikal Port was acquired by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) by submitting a resolution plan which was approved by the Committee of Creditors of the former and by the National Company Law Tribunal, Chennai Bench, Adani Ports said.

As per the Resolution Plan, APSEZ will infuse Rs 1,485 crore for upfront payment to financial creditors.

Pawar favours SC-appointed panel over JPC for probe into Adani issue

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday put his weight behind the Supreme Court constituted 6-member committee, appointed by the Chief Justice of India to probe the alleged stock manipulation issue by the Adani Group, saying it would be more effective than the Joint Parliamentary Committee, (JPC) demanded by the Congress-led Opposition.

Justifying his stand, Pawar said: “It is a common sense that the JPC will have more members from the ruling party (BJP) since it has an overwhelming majority in Parliament. Hence, in terms of effect, the JPC would not be a balanced panel as against the Supreme Court appointed committee which has independent experts.”

On the controversy around Veer Savarkar, he said “at this juncture, it is not a national issue”.

    MS Education Academy

“Moreover, late Savarkar was more science-oriented with progressive thoughts. He built a temple in which he appointed a Dalit as a priest in Ratnagiri,” he said, adding Savarkar also had a scientific stance on the cow slaughter issue.

Refusing to comment on clashes that took place at Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) in Maharashtra on the occasion of Ram Navami, he said “it would not be proper to debate on the matter, and now, the priority should be to establish normalcy there”.

Asked about the possibility of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha along with the Maharashtra Assembly in 2024, the former Union Minister said “there was no basis for such speculations”.

On the Opposition unity, he said that all non-BJP parties held a meeting recently and are likely to meet soon to speed up a joint alliance against the ruling BJP for the next general elections.

Pawar said another meeting is being convened within the next 10 to 12 days as per the convenience of other political parties to chalk out a strategy for the 2024 elections.
