No freedom for Islamic activities in any country like that in India: Muslim scholar

Representational photo Kozhikode: An Islamic scholar in Kerala on Saturday said there is no other country in the world where Islamic activities can be done freely like that in India and such kind of operational freedom is absent even in the so-called Muslim countries.
Speaking at a programme in this northern district, he asked whether there was any other country which grants operational freedom for Muslim outfits like in our country.
The statement of Ponmala Abdul Khader Musliyar, who belongs to the Muslims scholars’ body “Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama” (Samastha), came at a time when discussions are raging about religious freedom of minority communities in the country.
“When you look at the world nations, (you can find that) there is no other country where Islamic activities are being done like that in India. In which countries are these organisational activities possible?” he said.
Even among the familiar Gulf nations like UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia or in eastern countries like Singapore, Malaysia and so on, there is no other country suitable for our (Islamic) activities, he explained.
Musliyar said in India, the Islamic outfits can operate from the grassroot level to any extent and it is not possible even in countries like Qatar, UAE or Saudi Arabia.

WFI general body meet in Ayodhya cancelled as govt suspends body’s activities

(PTI Photo) New Delhi: The general body meeting of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), scheduled to take place in Ayodhya on Sunday, has been cancelled after the Sports ministry suspended all the ongoing activities of the federation and appointed an Oversight Committee to take over the day-to day functioning.
The committee will probe the allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The WFI chief will step aside until the probe is completed.
“The Ministry of Sports has communicated to the Wrestling Federation of India on Saturday that in view of the Government’s decision to appoint an Oversight Committee to investigate the various allegations raised by athletes against the Federation, WFI will suspend all ongoing activities with immediate effect, unless the Oversight Committee is formally appointed and takes over the day-to-day functioning of WFI,” the ministry said in a statement.
“In view of the direction to suspend all activities immediately, the Sports Ministry has asked WFI to also cancel the ongoing Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP. The Ministry has directed WFI to return the entry fees charged to participants for the ongoing event,” the statement read.
Notably, the protesting grapplers called off their protest after a meeting with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and getting an assurance of a detailed probe into the allegations.
Top Indian wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and other grapplers on January 18 staged a protest against the WFI. The 28-year-old Phogat alleged that Brij Bhushan Sharan had been harassing female wrestlers.

UN peacekeepers warn against sensitive activities on Lebanese-Israeli borders

Photo:(Twitter) Beirut: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has warned against conducting any works or activities that could lead to tension near the Lebanese-Israeli borders, state media reported.
The UN agency’s Spokesperson Andrea Tenenti on Friday said that “UNIFIL peacekeepers are on the ground at the works site to monitor if there is any violation of the Blue Line, reduce tension and prevent misunderstandings”.
“We are in constant contact with both parties and stress the sensitivity of any works or activities close to the Blue Line,” he added.
Tennent’s remarks came two days after rising tensions on Lebanon’s southern border as an excavator from the Israeli side crossed the demarcation line between the two countries, prompting the Lebanese army to halt Israeli military engineering work, Xinhua news agency reported.
The border has been mostly quiet since Israel fought a 2006 war against Hezbollah, except for some tensions on the border caused by Palestinian factions in Lebanon occasionally firing on Israel in the past.
