Hindu activists oppose Quran recitation at Karnataka religious fair

    [ad_1]

Hassan: Ahead of the Assembly polls in Karnataka, Hindu activists have opposed the ritual of reciting the Quran during the historical Chennakeshava Rathotsava in Beluru town of Hassan district.

Hindu organisations have demanded that the ritual should not be observed as it is against the religion.

They have called for a bandh on Tuesday in this regard.

The historical religious fair is scheduled to be held on April 4 and the district administration is concerned with the developments taking a communal turn at the time of elections.

The architecture of the 12th-century Beluru Chennakeshava temple is considered to be a marvel. It was built over three generations and took 103 years to complete.

The temple is expected to get a Unesco heritage tag.

Despite opposition from Hindu activists, the Quran recital tradition was carried out during the religious fair last year.

The activists have claimed that the ritual of Quran recital was forcefully added in 1932.

Dr Ramesh, a doctor and author, has released a book in this regard and explained how it is unnecessary to carry out a Quran recital before the Hindu god Sri Channakeshava.

The Hindu activists are questioning if it is possible to recite Hindu prayers at mosques and dargahs. They claim that the ritual was forced upon Hindus as a part of appeasement politics.

The ‘Rathotsav’ ceremony is performed for two days, which is a rare phenomenon in the state.

The idol of Channakeshava will be embellished with gold and diamond jewels gifted by the erstwhile Kings of the Mysuru kingdom.

Lakhs of devotees gather during the temple fair.

Last year, the administrator of the temple had written a letter to the Muzrai department seeking clarification over the continuation of the ritual which has been carried over for years and symbolic of Hindu-Muslim unity.

Rohini Sindhuri, who was the Commissioner of Muzrai Department had given green signal for the continuation of the ritual.

She had stated that according to Section 58 of the Hindu Religious Act 2002, there should not be any interference in the rituals and traditions of the temple.

After the direction, the temple committee decided to carry out the ritual recital of verses from the Quran .

News reporters must not become activists with ‘vested interests’: Minister Jitendra Singh

    [ad_1]

Jammu: The news reporters must not become activists with vested interests, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Sunday as he called for showing the brighter side of the government which had taken many historical decisions for public good.

He also said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the COVID-19 adversity turned into an opportunity as world’s first DNA vaccine and nasal vaccine for the coronavirus was indigenously developed bolstering India as a vaccine development and manufacturing centre.

The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s office was speaking at two separate functions here.

“The media must show the brighter side of the government like the DoNER model of development in the North-East which has changed the development paradigms of the region, the ‘StartUp Stand-up’ revolution, historical decision of abolishing interviews for non-gazetted posts and the deep sea mission under the leadership of Modi,” said Singh, a former minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

“The socio-economic reforms made by this government like the family pension to the divorce daughter, family pension to the families of missing government employees especially in J&K and North East and the digital life certificate must be brought to the public by the media so that information is disseminated to the deserving,” he said at the launch of J&K chapter of Public Relations Society of India (PRSI) here.

He said the reporters must not become activists with vested interests as biases can creep in making news not newsworthy.

“Communication is emerging now as an institution and it becomes the responsibility of PRSI to place the institution above the individual for the welfare of the people,” the minister said.

He said the greater responsibility of PRSI is to fill the gaps in government communication in such a manner that the people are informed by the media according to the development communication models.

Calling Modi as the “best communicator in the world”, Singh said he has initiated new areas, laid the foundation of unexplored areas which were never in news, the best example being the ‘Swachhta’.

Attending Medicos Meet ‘Celebrating the Multi-faceted’, he said under Modi, the COVID-19 adversity turned into an opportunity in India when world’s first DNA vaccine and nasal vaccine for coronavirus was indigenously developed in India which has not only strengthened ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat’ but also bolstered India’s status as a worldwide vaccine development and manufacturing centre.

On the occasion, the latest 2023 edition of the RSSDI Text Book of Diabetes Mellitus for postgraduate students was released. The book has the foreword and an exclusive chapter by Singh, who is also a nationally known diabetologist and Professor of Diabetes and Medicine.

“The path breaking decisions by the Modi-led government will be written in the golden words in history not done from the last 70 years, be that the done away with the attestation by a gazetted officer,” he said.

  • A few retd judges, some activists want judiciary to play role of Opposition: Rijiju

A few retd judges, some activists want judiciary to play role of Opposition: Rijiju

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday claimed that a few retired judges and some activists who are “part of the anti-India gang” are trying to make the Indian judiciary play the role of the opposition party.

He again criticised the collegium system to appoint judges, saying it is a result of the “misadventure” of the Congress party.

The minister was speaking at the India Today Conclave, where Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud later defended the collegium system, saying “not every system is perfect but this is the best system we have developed” and the “object was to protect the independence of the judiciary, which is a cardinal value”.

Rijiju also hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks in London on democracy in India, saying the person who speaks the most says he is not allowed to speak.

“Anti-India forces in India and outside India, they use the same language – democracy is in danger, human rights are non-existent in India. What this anti-India gang says, the same language is used by Rahul Gandhi,” the minister alleged.

Whatever Rahul Gandhi says is publicised with a “louder voice” by the “same ecosystem”, he said.

“The same ecosystem is working in India and outside India. We will not allow this ‘tukde-tukde gang’ to destroy our integrity, our sovereignty,” Rijiju asserted.

The minister said at a recent seminar in Delhi, where some retired Supreme Court judges and some senior lawyers were present, the topic was accountability in judges’ appointment.

“But the discussion the whole day was how the government is taking over the judiciary,” he said.

The minister said he shares an excellent relationship with the chief justice of India, the present one, the last one and all the judges of the Supreme Court.

“It is a few of the retired judges – maybe three or four – a few of those activists, part of the anti-India gang, these people are trying to make Indian judiciary play the role of the opposition party.

“Some people also go to the court and say please rein in the government, please change the policy of the government. These people want the judiciary to play the role of the opposition party, which cannot happen,” Rijiju said.

The judiciary, he asserted, is neutral.

The minister’s remarks were criticised by Congress general secretary communications Jairam Ramesh.

“A Law Minister talking like an Outlaw. A Minister of Justice propagating Injustice. If this is not a threat to freedom AFTER speech what is?” Ramesh tweeted.

Rijiju said, “Judges are not part of any group or political affiliation. How can these people openly say that the Indian judiciary must take head-on with the government. What kind of propaganda is this.”

Asked whether any action was being taken against just elements, he said, “Actions will be taken, actions are being taken as per law. Nobody will escape.”

On the issue of the appointment of judges, Rijiju said there is no role of the judiciary as such to initiate and to give finalisation to the appointment of judges.

“It was only later due to the misadventure of the Congress party, the Supreme Court started acting, which some people describe as judicial overreach. Then the collegium system came into existence”.

But right now, the position of the government is very clear that the collegium system is in place.

“As long as a new system is not introduced, we will follow the collegium system but the appointment of judges cannot be done by a judicial order. It is purely administrative,” he said.

Kerala: Journalists’ bodies condemn SFI activists’ barging into Asianet office

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A day after a group of SFI activists allegedly barged into the Kochi office of Asianet News and intimidated channel staff over a news report, journalists’ bodies condemned the incident and called it yet another example of growing attacks against media and scribes.

Barging into media offices is “illegal” and should be considered as “an attack on press freedom”, the Press Club of India, Indian Women’s Press Corps, Delhi Union of Journalists and the Kerala Union of Working Journalists said in a joint statement.

“We expect the Kerala government to take strict action against those who attacked Asianet,” they said.

A group of Students’ Federation of India (SFI) activists allegedly trespassed into the office of Malayalam news channel Asianet News in Kochi on Friday and intimidated the staff over a report about the sexual assault of a girl, according to Kerala Police.

A case was later registered against 30 SFI activists, the students’ wing of the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala, on the basis of a complaint lodged by the channel.

Condemning the incident, the journalists’ bodies said, “We protest the attack on the TV channel Asianet News’ office in Kochi by the activists of the Students Federation of India.”

“This is yet another example of the growing attacks against media organisations and journalists in the country.”

The journalists’ bodies said Asianet News had used “a mock video” to bring out the issue of drug and sexual abuse of a young girl in Kerala.

“Stamping such a programme as fake news suggests ignorance of the professional ways used by news organisations to protect the identity of victims of sexual assault,” they said, adding, “There are methods and platforms to raise complaints against any news item in a legal manner.”

The journalists’ bodies noted that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made it clear in the Assembly that the police were looking into a complaint against the news report in question.

“Barging into media offices is illegal and should be considered as an attack on press freedom. We expect the Kerala government to take strict action against those who attacked Asianet,” they said.

“We condemn the attempts by certain political outfits, organisations and social media influencers in Kerala to instill media phobia by labelling all news and views as fake if they disagree with it,” they said, adding, “Demonising or undermining the media often protects vested interests.”

Male activists in Bangalore organise special ‘puja’ for Elon Musk

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: A group of male activists from the Save Indian Family Federation (SIFF) NGO, which fights for men’s rights, organised a special ‘puja’ here for Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk and thanked him for purchasing the micro-blogging platform “allowing men to express their views against the oppression of authorities”.

The video of the incident that took place in the city’s Freedom Park has gone viral on social media.

In a Twitter post on Monday, the NGO said that “men’s Activists of SIFF used to be often shadow banned from Twitter by previous woke admins of the company”.

“After Elon Musk fired them, the MRAs have got back their right to free speech.”

The “special worshipping” was done on the sidelines of a protest against PILs on marital rape in the Supreme Court.

The post by the activists stated “SIFF members are worshipping guru Elon Musk in Bengaluru, India for purchasing Twitter and allowing men to express their views against the oppression of authorities”.

The activists were seen in the video with banners that read “mens lives matters” and “men have a right to peaceful existence”

The members lit incense sticks before a portrait of the tech billionaire and chanted “Elan Muskaya Namaha”, “Elon Musk ki Jaia, “Elon Musk se kuch seekho Adani, Ambani”.

SIFF members maintained that laws on rape, domestic violence and dowry are biased against men which are leading to lodging of false cases against them.

“The law is twisted to create fear among men rather than delivering justice to the victims. The members clarified that at the same time they are not against the laws relating to sexual violence in marriage or relationship, they are concerned with the abuse of laws,” they added.

“Witch hunt” on climate activists? A custom fuels anti-Last Generation sentiment. You feel threatened.

Vandans/ Vienna (Austria) – For some, the climate activists from organizations like “The Last Generation” or “Ende Gelände” are heroes. For the others they are “climate glue“, which disturb everyday life and provoke pointlessly with their actions. A custom from Austria, which was converted to climate activists, is now causing an uproar on social networks. The organization itself is concerned.

In February, traffic in Vienna was disrupted for two weeks by the organization “Last Generation”, supported by other organisations. The aim of the protest: stop new oil and gas drilling and introduce a 100 km/h speed limit on the freeway. How OE24 reported, various protesters were temporarily detained more than 80 times in total.

There were arguments between passers-by and demonstrators: “Something hacked, you oaschholes,” an angry man called out on Friday (February 24). By “hacking” was meant “working”. An activist then replied: “I have a job anyway, I took extra time off today.” The organization recently published pictures of demonstrators walking on the street being pulled off the street by the police on Monday morning (February 27).

“Witch hunt” on climate activists? How a custom from Austria heats up the mood

Support, incomprehension, concern – a custom from Vorarlberg drives the polarization surrounding climate activists to the extreme. It is a tradition in Vorarlberg to burn a straw doll on a large pile of wood at the beginning of Lent. The so-called “spark witch” is supposed to drive away the winter with her burning.

In Vandans, however, the “spark witch” was disguised as an activist with a safety vest. “I’ll push it into you, I’ll stick myself to the top of the pyre,” says the Vorarlberg dialect on the sign that the straw doll is holding in his hand, like the one among others ORF reported.

“This is how a society that is dependent on fossils reacts: Literal witch hunts on those who peacefully point out and protest for what, according to scientific findings, must finally be decided,” writes the “Last Generation Austria” in a response on Twitter . According to ORF, Marina Hagen-Canaval, press spokeswoman for “Last Generation”, also spoke of a “witch hunt”. The Twitter users reacted with support for “The Last Generation”, but others also saw the action as a justified warning to the “interferers”.

Austria: accusation of witch hunts by climate activists – this is how the radio guild reacts

“I cannot influence what others interpret into a warning vest,” said the chairman of the “Funkenzunft”, Markus Pfefferkorn, to the ORF. His guild competed with the witch in the election for the most beautiful spark witch in Vorarlberg’s Montafon valley. The disguise is only satire, with which one does not want to incite hatred or defame climate activists.

He was asked by the “Last Generation” by email to take the witch from the Funkenturm. However, the request will not be complied with, as they want to stick to the customs. Instead, he suggested to the ORF that the climate activists should be told what it was all about. He cannot understand the allegation of witch hunts. He also cannot understand the excitement about the inscription “She deserves it”. “The witch is supposed to explode on the spark and thus keep disease and mischief away from the village,” says Pfefferkorn, “that’s why she deserves it”.

Who is behind the “Last Generation” and where does the anger at climate activists come from?

The climate activists are repeatedly accused of impeding traffic safety with their actions. An argument that led the voluntary paramedic Gerald Bäck to join the “last generation” in Austria. His missions are repeatedly hindered, but: “It’s not the fault of any glued-on people, but the normal madness about parking and traffic! The causes being championed by ‘The Last Generation’ are more than valid,” he writes on the Last Generation website.

Are climate activists being made into “scapegoats” – which would actually be reminiscent of medieval witch burnings? Yes, says the ethicist Prof. Dr. Opposite Andreas Lob-Hüdepohl nv. In connection with the death of a cyclist parallel to climate protests, he said: “The general public knows and basically also wants that something should change radically in favor of the climate. However, far too few are willing to change their own actions in everyday life or to support corresponding political guidelines. That is why the blockers touch the deep bad conscience of many people, especially political actors.”

He said: “You can distract yourself from your own inability to act consistently by scapegoating others.” For March 3, Fridays for Future has called for a global protest that can do without disrupting traffic. The fact that climate activists are radicalizing is met with understanding from other climate activists – radicalization is a sign of powerlessness. (cat)

National Archives offers personal tours to anti-abortion activists who sued

The Archives issued a statement last week apologizing for the incident.

“Early indications are that our security officers quickly corrected their actions,” the statement said, acknowledging the irony of the activists being told to cover up their protest garb while touring documents proclaiming free speech and freedom of religion.

Another group of young attendees at the annual March for Life filed a similar lawsuit last week against the Smithsonian Institution, alleging that during a visit to the National Air and Space Museum on the same day, they were harassed and told to take off matching ski hats reading “Rosary PRO-LIFE.”

The interim deal filed with the court on Tuesday in the Archives case will not resolve that lawsuit, but offers the plaintiffs a preliminary injunction similar to the one they planned to seek from the court, court papers say. The agreement needs approval from the judge assigned to the case, Timothy Kelly, an appointee of former President Donald Trump. According to a footnote, the deal is not intended to affect the Archives’ ability to regulate “clothing containing profanity.”

No similar agreement has been filed in the suit stemming from the events at the National Air and Space Museum, but the Smithsonian has apologized for its guards’ actions and promised retraining.
