Nobody taking action against hate speeches despite our orders, laments SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday lamented that nobody was taking action against hate speeches despite its orders, and observed that the top court will be left “embarrassed again and again” if it is asked to give further directions to curb such statements.

The court’s strong observations were made by a bench comprising Justice K M Joseph, Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Hrishikesh Roy when a plea seeking to prohibit an event scheduled to be held on February 5 by the Hindu Jan Akrosh Morcha in Mumbai was mentioned for an urgent hearing.

The bench agreed to hear the plea on Friday subject to instructions and approval from Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on the administrative side.

“We are with you on this, but understand that the Supreme Court cannot be triggered every time there is a rally notified. We have already passed an order which is clear enough. Just imagine rallies happening all across the country. Every time there will be an application before the Supreme Court. How can that be feasible?

“You ask us to be embarrassed again and again by getting an order. We have passed so many orders yet nobody is taking action. The Supreme Court should not be asked to pass an order on an event to event basis,” it observed.

The observation came after a lawyer mentioned the matter, saying the issue needs urgent hearing against holding of the Mumbai rally.

She submitted that a similar rally was organised a few days ago in which 10,000 people participated and allegedly gave a call to boycott Muslim communities economically and socially.

On continuous persistence of the lawyer, the court asked her to serve a copy of the application to the counsel for Maharashtra.

“Serve a copy on the State, we will list it tomorrow subject to orders of the CJI. Only this case, not the entire batch,” the bench said.

Holding that the Constitution of India envisages a secular nation, the top court on October 21 last year directed the Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments to come down hard on hate speeches, promptly registering criminal cases against the culprits without waiting for a complaint to be filed.

It had also warned that any delay on the part of the administration in taking action on this “very serious issue” would invite the court’s contempt.

  • Biggest day of industrial action in Britain as teachers, workers strike over pay

Biggest day of industrial action in Britain as teachers, workers strike over pay

    [ad_1]

London: Britain on Wednesday faced what has been dubbed the biggest industrial action in a decade as teachers, university lecturers, train and bus drivers and public sector workers went on a strike to demand better pay conditions.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s official spokesperson admitted that the mass strike action will prove “very difficult” for the public.

Teachers in England and Wales who are members of the National Education Union (NEU) are staging walkouts, affecting an estimated 23,000 schools. Estimates suggest around 85 per cent of schools in the regions will be fully or partially closed, impacting working parents over childcare.

UK Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has insisted that “inflation-busting” pay rises are impossible even as talks remain ongoing.

“I am disappointed that it has come to this, that the unions have made this decision. It is not a last resort. We are still in discussions,” the minister said.

Train drivers from the RMT and Aslef workers’ unions are staging a strike in their long-running dispute over pay and conditions, including bus drivers in London. Around 100,000 civil servants employed in 124 government departments and other public sector bodies are also on strike in a dispute over better pay and working conditions.

Workers’ unions have argued with employers for higher pay rises to combat record-high inflation and real-term cuts in income over the past decade.

But ministers continue to insist increasing wages to higher levels would only fuel the cost-of-living crisis and hamper the Sunak-led government’s top priority of cutting down soaring inflation over the coming weeks and months.

Further health sector strikes are planned next week, when nurses and ambulance workers take another round of strike action from February 6 over better wages and working conditions.

Muslim leader questions delay in action against Mahant Raju Das

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat President Navaid Hamid on Monday questioned the delay in action against Mahant Raju Das who has announced a reward for beheading SP leader Swami Prasad Maurya.

In a tweet, Hamid said: “The government announces reward on those who proclaim ‘Sar tan se juda’ so why is action not being taken against others who have made similar proclamations? Will any legal action be taken against Mahant Raju Das and others like him?”

“By the way these people (Mahant Raju Das and others) are not Muslims and that probably explains the delay”, he added.

The UP DGP has been tagged in the tweet.

Rajinikanth issues public notice on infringement of rights, warns legal action

    [ad_1]

Chennai: South Indian Superstar Rajinikanth has issued a public notice on the infringement of rights, and warned of legal action against those who commercially exploit the actor’s name, image, voice, etc., without taking his consent.

His advocate S. Elambharathi issued a public notice warning civil and criminal proceedings against those who infringe upon the actor’s personality, including his voice, image, name, and other unique behaviour of his.

The notice issued on Saturday stated that only the actor has the control over the commercial utilization of his personality, name, voice, image, etc.

The notice also said that several mediums, platforms, product manufacturers were misappropriating his name, image, voice, caricature image, and artistic image, and AI-generated images to create confusion among the public and to entice them to buy certain products or to access the medium through which the actor’s manners were misused.

The notice said, “His charisma and nature as an actor and human being has earned him the title of ‘Superstar’ called by millions and millions of his fans across the world. The sheer proportion of his fan base and his respect across the film industry is unmatched and indisputable. Any damage to his reputation or personal life would entail a great loss to our client.”

  • BBC documentary screening: Cops’ action against students wrong, says Chirag

BBC documentary screening: Cops’ action against students wrong, says Chirag

    [ad_1]

Patna: Former Lok Janshakti Party president Chirag Paswan on Saturday voiced disapproval of police action against students in Delhi over attempted screening of the BBC documentary on the communal riots that took place in Gujarat two decades ago.

Paswan, who now heads a splinter group of the party founded by his late father Ram Vilas Paswan, however, qualified his statement by adding that the Centre’s decision to proscribe the documentary should also be “respected”.

“I believe that the police action against Delhi University students was wrong. However, once a decision has been taken by the Centre, that should also be respected”, he told reporters.

The 38-year-old leader was asked about what he thought of the controversy surrounding the documentary on the communal conflagration of 2002 which had led his late father to resign from the Union cabinet in protest.

Paswan senior, however, realigned with the BJP, which ruled Gujarat as well as the Centre when the riots took place.

The late leader also remained a member, till death, of the Union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2002.

Chirag Paswan, who represents Jamui Lok Sabha seat in Bihar, was also asked about turmoil in the ruling ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in the state.

“My view is that coalitions formed solely with electoral arithmetic in mind always tend to be shaky. Alliances must always be based on principles”, said Paswan, who is accused by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) of having been part of a “BJP conspiracy” in the 2020 assembly polls.

Training his guns at Kumar, the young leader said the longest serving CM of Bihar had “no vision” for the development of the state and challenged the veteran leader for an open debate.

Paswan also claimed that people of the state were paying more for electricity than residents of other parts of the country since power was purchased by the government at “inexplicably higher rates, thanks to a powerful nexus the CM also cannot break”.

Notably, the CM has been pressing for a “one nation one tariff” policy, claiming that under the current system impoverished Bihar was being compelled to cough up more than other states to get its quota of electricity.

Paswa also slammed Kumar for failure to attract investors and asked the Bihar CM to take a leaf out of the book of PM Modi who used to hold “investor summits” in Gujarat when he ruled the state.

  • Hyderabad: Baby loses life to hospital negligence but there is no punitive action

Hyderabad: Baby loses life to hospital negligence but there is no punitive action

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: One of the most lucrative businesses is in the field of health management.  If you have money or the capacity to raise money open a hospital.  The caliber of the hospital is immaterial.  The owner can make claims about the specialty departments he has and run his or her business without fear of any action from the government.

Because the owner is hand in glove with the inspecting authorities who shut their eyes to areas that are of utmost importance for the lives of the patients.

We have come across with an incident that had a chilling effect on our spine.

A few weeks ago a pregnant woman was taken to a well-known hospital in Nanal Nagar.  The doctors taking care of the patient said that there appears no reason for any worry because the mother and baby inside the womb are in good health.

After a few hours of pains, the woman from the Old City gave birth to a male baby. But there came a shock.  The baby had a weak heart. He needed Level Three treatment. The doctors said the hospital does not have the facilities for that level of treatment.  They could treat up to Level One deficiency at the hospital.

Announcing this the doctors should have offered an alternative medical facility but they did not. The father said he was ready to pay for whatever expenses required.

But the hospital left the father to fend for himself.  He ran from pillar to post to make arrangements for an ambulance to take the baby to the hospital identified by the doctors. There were three ambulances parked in the hospital.  If the doctors had taken interest they could have immediately arranged an ambulance.  But they said it was the responsibility of the father to find the vehicle and take the baby.

When the father went to get the ambulance, he was shocked to know that none of the ambulances have a driver.

On making frantic phone calls and pleading with the management one of the drivers came in about half an hour.

The ambulance did not have the facility required to transport such a critical patient.  However, the patient was taken to a hospital in Banjara Hills area where the father was informed that he has brought a dead baby.

There was ruckus at the Nanal Nagar hospital when the baby’s lifeless body was taken back to that hospital.  Except for a shouting match between the management and the relatives of the baby nothing came off.

One other strange part of the story is that the baby’s father was made to pay Rs 63,000 before allowing the distraught mother to go home.

While the entire fault lies with the hospital and its management, the father cannot shirk his responsibility.  He did not report the case of utter negligence that time or later against the hospital. He could have gone to the police and also the medical department authorities.

The hospital is still running and maybe minting money daily.

When this writer spoke with the father, he said God had given his child only that much life.  He confessed that he was trying to recover from the tragedy but the condition of his wife still bad.

Is there a way to handle such cases?  Are there any organisations that would take cases of gross negligence and get such hospitals penalized?

Adani evaluating remedial and punitive action against Hindenburg Research

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The maliciously mischievous, unresearched report published by Hindenburg Research on January 24 has adversely affected the Adani Group, our shareholders and investors, the Adani Group said in a statement on Thursday.

“The volatility in Indian stock markets created by the report is of great concern and has led to unwanted anguish for Indian citizens”, Jatin Jalundhwala, Group Head, Legal, Adani, said.

“Clearly, the report and its unsubstantiated contents were designed to have a deleterious effect on the share values of Adani Group companies as Hindenburg Research, by their own admission, is positioned to benefit from a slide in Adani shares,” he said.

“We hold short positions in Adani Group Companies through US-traded bonds and non-Indian-traded derivatives, along with other non-Indian-traded reference securities”, Hindenburg Research had disclosed.

“We are deeply disturbed by this intentional and reckless attempt by a foreign entity to mislead the investor community and the general public, undermine the goodwill and reputation of the Adani Group and its leaders, and sabotage the FPO (Follow-on Public Offering) from Adani Enterprises. We are evaluating the relevant provisions under US and Indian laws for remedial and punitive action against Hindenburg Research,” the Adani Group said.
