Amid cross-border tension, acting Afghan FM to visit Pakistan

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Tension is growing between Pakistan and the interim Afghanistan government with Islamabad pointing fingers at Kabul for being the facilitator and supporter of militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), whose continued attacks in different parts of Pakistan have spread a wave of terror, posing serious security threat to the armed forces.

Against this backdrop, Amir Khan Muttaqi, Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister, is expected to visit Islamabad and hold talks with the senior officials of the Pakistan government and its security forces.

The visit holds critical and crucial relevance in view of the persisting tensions between the two countries, which share a large porous border.

    MS Education Academy

As per sources in the know of things, Islamabad and Kabul are currently in touch with each other to finalise the date for the visit of the Afghan Taliban chief’s acting Foreign Minister.

“The visit is expected to take place in the coming weeks,” said a source.

This will be Mutaqqi’s second visit to Islamabad. He had previously come in November 2021, months after the Taliban took over the control in Afghanistan, ousting the Ashraf Ghani government, which fell in a span of 20 days after the withdrawal of NATO forces.

“Pakistan had hoped that the Taliban takeover would improve border security and more importantly, the issue of terrorist sanctuaries would be sorted out. But contrary to our expectations, the TTP-sponsored attacks have only increased, causing friction in bilateral ties,” said the source.

This happened after months long peace talks between the former Pakistan government of Imran Khan, the security agencies of the country and the TTP, which were facilitated by the Afghan Taliban in Kabul, but failed in the end.

Since then, TTP has amplified its attacks in Pakistan and has targeted security installations with suicide bombings, targeted attacks and killings, claiming lives of many security personnel.

Pakistan, during its recent high-level meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC), admitted that the peace talks with the TTP had only resulted in rise in terrorist activities.

“The government has now decided that it would not have any further talks with the Taliban and would counter their terror attacks with military level offensive,” said the source.

Pakistan has also repeatedly maintained that the Afghan Taliban have failed to take any action against TTP militants, who are moving freely in Afghanistan and using its soil to plan, coordinate and carry out terror attacks.

On the other hand, the Afghan Taliban have denied Islamabad’s claims, stating that they stand by their promise to not allow its soil to be used against any other country.

  • As delivery staff stress levels reach worrying highs, food delivery apps start acting

As delivery staff stress levels reach worrying highs, food delivery apps start acting

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Ajay (name changed), working as a delivery boy of a popular online-delivery platform, was rushing to deliver his order, but got stuck in peak-hour traffic and thus was late to deliver his order. He called up the customer to inform his situation.

Instead of being empathic, the customer called up his company to complain. Soon enough Ajay lost his job.

Hamid (name changed) accidentally pressed the doorbell of a house, he was abused. The list is endless.

In the world of instant delivery, every other day we hear stories where delivery boys are beaten, abused or assaulted. Often they have to traverse in the harsh sun, wind and rain; face longer hours of work and traffic snarls.

“There has been a consistent growth in consumer confidence for ordering online, steered by tech-led delivery networks. This, in turn, has unlocked the long-term potential of ready-to-eat food delivery,” Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group, CMR, told IANS.

“For food delivery startups seeking to attain sustainable and long-term market leadership, this market opportunity requires them to deliver not just on the instantaneous consumer delight, but rather the employee experience as well,” he added.

Owing to their tough workstyle, delivery boys often face a lot of stress, which can affect their mental health.

“Uncertainties of day to day life, life risks, long time periods, financial stress. It certainly impacts mental health. As a result they may engage in unhealthy coping mechanisms like consuming substances or other desperate measures to manage stress,” Mimansa Singh Tanwar, Clinical Psychologist, at Fortis Hospital, told IANS.

“To maintain positive mental health for them, it is important to improve the manager employee relationship where they practise values of empathy, integrity, gratitude and positive encouragement towards them,” she added.

Tanwar suggested that the delivery boys should be incorporated in the employee wellness programmes, and since there is also a connection between money and mental health, financial aids should also be there to support them.

Delivery boys should “focus on what they can control and engage in healthy stress mechanisms like building good support systems through positive family and peer relationships, and avoid engaging in unhealthy consumption of substances,” she noted.

In the movie ‘Zwigato’, helmed by Nandita Das, ace comedian and actor Kapil Sharma plays the role of a delivery boy, and showcases their struggles. Kapil shared that the character made him realise how tough life is for delivery boys, and that he has become more empathetic towards them.

“This movie made me realise the challenges that delivery boys face on a daily basis, and I have learned to appreciate their hard work and dedication even more. I am not saying tip them, but I am just saying that we can at least say a thank you with respect and that will make them happy,” Kapil said.

Meanwhile, several food companies have started several initiatives for its workers. Food delivery platform Zomato recently launched ‘the Shelter Project’ under which the company has set up public resting points where delivery persons can take a break from their exhausting routine and use amenities like the washroom, internet, and phone-charging stations.

In August 2020, Zomato also introduced period leaves of 10 days in a year for its women employees (including transgender people).

Swiggy has rolled out ambulance service for delivery executives and their dependents in the case of emergencies.

    senate aviation 37688

“A point I would like to make to my Democratic colleagues on this committee, do you think Phil Washington could come anywhere close to Acting Administrator Nolen’s knowledge? I think the answer is no,” Cruz said, after asking Nolen to spell out his long career as a pilot. “I think it’s clear that Phil Washington is not going to have the votes. I think a nominee like Acting Administrator Nolen would receive widespread bipartisan support and could get confirmed quickly.”

At one point during the hearing Nolen made it clear that he isn’t angling for the job.

“I do believe that Phil Washington is fully qualified, I support the president and I support the nomination,” Nolen said.

Beyond Cruz, some Democrats on the Commerce Committee are not fully convinced. Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) said she hasn’t yet decided on the nomination and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) also raised concerns about Washington’s experience during his nomination hearing last week. While some Republicans vocally oppose Washington, not everyone agrees with Cruz. Aviation Subcommittee ranking member Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) said he’s also undecided.

Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) argued on Wednesday that Washington’s lack of ties to the aviation industry will assist ongoing congressional efforts to ensure that the FAA is fully independent from the airlines and aircraft manufacturers it regulates, particularly after the Boeing 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019.

“I think this notion of running a large organization with transportation background is really important because there’s some things here you’re trying to change culturally,” Cantwell said. “I definitely think he doesn’t represent the status quo and sometimes you get people with very long aviation careers and they’re the ones who basically go along with the system we’re trying to change.”

Cantwell hasn’t announced a committee vote on Washington’s nomination, a sign that Democrats may not be aligned.

Senate Democrats largely did not weigh in on Washington’s nomination last Congress, when he faced questions over lawsuits and search warrants related to his time leading the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. But after the White House renominated Washington in January, Cantwell announced her support and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Washington’s confirmation a priority after a FAA computer system meltdown led to the first nationwide grounding of flights since September 11, 2001.

“With recent events, including airline troubles and last week’s tech problem, this agency needs a leader confirmed by the Senate immediately,” Schumer said in January.

  • BJP says CBI acting lawfully against corrupt, demands Kejriwal’s resignation

BJP says CBI acting lawfully against corrupt, demands Kejriwal’s resignation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party over its street protests against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s arrest, asserting that the CBI is acting lawfully against the “corrupt” and demanding CM Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation for the arrest of two of his ministers in cases of alleged corruption.

The law is taking its own course and probe agencies are working lawfully, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told reporters after Sisodia was sent to the CBI remand till March 4.

The “kattar beimaan party” (hardcore dishonest party) respects neither courts, nor laws or people, he claimed, accusing Kejriwal of orchestrating the anarchic protests against Sisodia’s arrest.

If the AAP believes that the CBI’s action is driven by political malice as it has alleged, then it should have gone to court as the probe in the suspected corruption in the framing of excise policy had been going on for months.

Neither does Kejriwal abide by law nor he sacks his ministers involved in corruption, he said, noting that Satyendar Jain is behind bars for months in a money laundering case.

Jain has not received bail yet because courts believe that the charges against him are serious, the BJP leader said.

Two of his six ministers are now behind bars in corruption case, he noted and said Kejriwal should take moral responsibility and tender his resignation immediately. After all the chief minister is the first among equals and leads the Cabinet, he said.

With its “drama” and show of “anarchy”, the AAP has signalled that it will not let probe agencies do their work which amounts to obstructing the process of justice and contempt of court, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told reporters after Sisodia was sent to the CBI remand till March 4 in the case of alleged irregularities and corruption in excise policy, now withdrawn.

The BJP leader described the AAP as “Arajak Apradh Party” (anarchic, criminal party) and said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seems to have taken oath on the Constitution to destroy it, he alleged, claiming that the “liquor scam” was perpetrated to fill his coffers.

A special CBI court on Monday remanded Sisodia in five-day custody of the central probe agency till March 4, a day after his arrest in the excise scam case.

Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers held protests in several states against the arrest in connection with alleged corruption in the now-scrapped excise policy relating to the sale of alcohol.

Bhatia said Sisodia’s alleged silence before his interrogators in the CBI custody speaks loudly that a scam has been perpetrated. They (AAP leaders) are in panick because the law’s long arms have caught hold of their corruption, he claimed.
