Ukrainian investigators are searching the home of Metropolitan Pavel Lebed, an Orthodox Church leader, who they accuse of justifying Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and inciting inter-religious hatred.

Ukraine’s security service (SBU) confirmed on Saturday that Pavel, who runs Ukraine’s most important monastery, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, is suspected of violating the country’s criminal code.

Pavel “in his public speeches repeatedly insulted the religious feelings of Ukrainians, humiliated the views of believers of other denominations and tried to form hostile sentiments towards them,” said the SBU, which also published what it alleges are phone intercepts from Pavel’s sermons. He also “made statements that justified or denied the actions of the aggressor country,” according to the service.

“Today, the enemy is trying to use the church environment to promote its propaganda and split Ukrainian society,” the SBU’s head Vasyl Malyuk said.

Pavel’s branch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was previously under control of Moscow clergy, but declared its independence in May last year.

But Kyiv argues that the church needs to be closed down due to its pre-war ties to Moscow and has been trying to evict Pavel and his fellow worshippers from his monastery.

Pavel has denied the allegations, arguing that Kyiv has no legal grounds for the eviction, according to the BBC. During a court hearing on Saturday, he said he has “never been on the side of aggression,” describing his current status as “house arrest.”

The SBU has arrested dozens of clerics, accusing them of collaboration with Russia. Last year, the service raided the Lavra monastery and other buildings belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The church denies that there is evidence to support the charges.

Irani accuses West Bengal CM of protecting those who pelted Hindu procession with stones

    [ad_1]

New Delhi Union minister Smriti Irani on Friday hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the violence during a Ram Navami procession in Howrah and accused her of protecting those who pelted it with stones.

In a statement, the BJP leader said it was not the first time that such an “attack” happened on a religious exercise of Hinduism and alleged a similar attack had taken place during Lakshmi Puja.

“Even then Mamata Banerjee could not protect the Hindu community,” Irani said.

“Instead of delivering justice, CM Mamata protected those who took law in their hands and attacked the Shobha Yatra of Ram Navami. She instead put those who took out the yatra in the dock and gave a clean chit to those who pelted the procession with stones,” the Union minister said.

Banerjee on Friday asserted that neither Hindus nor Muslims, but the BJP and other right-wing organisations were behind the violence in Howrah’s Kazipara area during a procession on Ram Navami.

She also appealed to the people of both communities to maintain peace and law and order in the area.

  • Pak PM Sharif accuses President Alvi of following dictates of Imran Khan’s party

Pak PM Sharif accuses President Alvi of following dictates of Imran Khan’s party

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday hit back at President Arif Alvi, accusing him of being partisan and following the dictates of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party instead of remaining neutral as the head of the state.

His comments came two days after President Alvi in a letter on Friday accused the premier of using disproportionate force against politicians, political workers and journalists in recent clashes with former prime minister Imran Khan’s PTI.

The president, who was a member of Khan’s party before assuming the office, had also asked Sharif to direct all authorities to assist the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in holding the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elections as per the orders of the Supreme Court.

In his five-page letter to President Alvi, Sharif said that he was writing to “set the record of the government straight” and bring the latter’s “partisan attitude” on record.

He said Alvi’s communication in parts read like “a press release of the opposition political party PTI whose one-sided, anti-government views you continue to openly espouse, notwithstanding your constitutional oath/office of President ”.

He said that the president on several occasions violated his oath, including the order of the dissolution of the National Assembly in April last year on direction of then prime minister Imran Khan, and also his failure to discharge his constitutional duty to give oath to Sharif on his election as the prime minister.

“Despite the foregoing and several other instances, where you actively worked towards undermining a constitutionally elected government, I have made all-out efforts to maintain a good working relationship with you. However, the contents of your letter, its tone, and language have compelled me to respond to it,” he stated in the letter.

Sharif said that actions by the law enforcement agencies were in accordance with the law.

“Regrettably and ostensibly due to your party allegiance, you have failed to note the sheer violation of laws, contumacious disregard of court orders, attacking the law enforcement agencies, damaging public property, attempts to create chaos, civil and political unrest, and in short, to bring the country to the brink of economic default and civil war by PTI,” he said.

He said the PTI’s complete disregard of law tarnished the image of Pakistan in the international community and cast negative repercussions on the future of democracy and state of human rights.

He also complained that Alvi as president had not once said anything regarding the conduct of Khan for his “aggressive, rather militant, attitude of a political order in complete defiance of court orders”.

“Regrettably again, you never raised your voice or shared your concerns in the manner that you have in your letter, in the past while the PTI was in power,” he said.

He further stated that Alvi’s reference regarding meaningful consultation between the president and prime minister was “out of place”.

“Mr President, in the exercise of your functions, you must act on and in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet or the Prime Minister under clause (1) of Article 48,” he wrote.

Talking about the election in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, he said that the federal government provided every support to the ECP which is an autonomous body and free to decide about election.

Sharif also said that he was “fully aware” of his duties, asserting that his government was fully committed to preserving, protecting, and defending the Constitution but would not allow anyone to violate the law or create unrest.

Gurugram: Woman, 26, accuses live-in partner of rape, shooting private video

    [ad_1]

Gurugram: A 26-year-old Delhi woman here has accused her live-in partner of raping her several times and shooting her private photos and videos without her consent, police said on Saturday.

The accused also kept her legal documents with him and refused to give them back, they said.

The victim moved to police when the accused sent her private photos to her parents.

According to her complaint, the woman said she was living with Amul Thakur, the accused, in a live-in relationship, having met him first in May 2022. After a few months, she returned home.

“He made my objectionable photos and videos without my consent while having sex saying he will marry me soon. When I left his house, he threatened me to come back to him. When I refused, he sent my objectionable photos to my parents and threatened them too. He also threatened to shoot me,” the woman said in her complaint.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against Thakur under sections 376 (2) N (raping repeatedly the same woman), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and sections 67 and 67 A of the IT Act at Sector 40 Police Station on Friday.

“An FIR has been registered and we are verifying the facts. Action will be taken as per the law,” said Inspector Satish Kumar, SHO, Sector 40 Police Station.

Cong MP writes to LS Speaker, accuses govt of disrupting House’s functioning

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accusing the government of disrupting the functioning of the House.

Chowdhury said in the letter that the parliamentary disruptions are government-sponsored and Opposition must get an opportunity to put forward its views in the House.

“With a heavy heart and deep sense of anguish, I am writing this second letter to you regarding the government-sponsored disruption in the House. As you may recall, I had categorically mentioned in my first letter the details of the procedures and rules that are outlined in the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House, which not only guide in conducting the Business of the House but also provide ample guidance for conduct of Members inside the House,” the Congress MP mentioned in the letter.

He further claimed there is a “well-hatched conspiracy on the part of the party in power to tarnish the image of Rahul Gandhi”.

“What is more disturbing for me to observe is that even the Ministers themselves vociferously take the lead to disrupt the proceedings. The voice of the leaders of Opposition parties is not being heard at all,” Chowdhury said.

“The disruption by the Treasury Bench Members, the lead role being played by the Ministers in disrupting the House, silencing of all the mikes of opposition members goes on to amply substantiate the views expressed by Rahul Gandhi that ‘Mikes of the opposition members are often muted’,” he said.

He further appealed to ensure that the Opposition members get an opportunity to ventilate their view points in the House, in a fair manner and enjoy the basic political right as an elected representative.

  • US accuses Russia of downing drone over Black Sea

US accuses Russia of downing drone over Black Sea

    [ad_1]

Moscow: A US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drone was brought down over the Black Sea, after what its European Command (EUCOM) described as “an unsafe and unprofessional intercept” by two Russian jets, media reports said.

The “Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance” platform was “operating within international airspace” when the airplanes approached, EUCOM said in a statement. One of the Su-27s “struck the propeller of the MQ-9”, so the operators ditched the drone into the sea.

“Several times before the collision, the Su-27s dumped fuel on and flew in front of the MQ-9 in a reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional manner,” the US military complained, accusing the Russians of “a lack of competence”, RT reported.

General James Hecker, the commander of US Air Forces in Europe and Africa, said the drone was “conducting routine operations in international airspace” and that the crash had resulted in a “complete loss” of the MQ-9.

EUCOM said the US “routinely” operates drone flights in international airspace to “bolster collective European defence and security” and “support Allied, partner, and US national objectives”. Hecker said the flights would continue, calling on the Russians “to conduct themselves professionally and safely”.

The Kremlin and the Russian Defence Ministry have yet to comment on the alleged incident.

The US has admitted to providing Ukraine with intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information in the conflict against Russia, while insisting it is not a party to the hostilities. US and NATO spy aircraft routinely fly over the Black Sea and approach Crimea, sometimes just before Ukrainian forces launch attacks on the Russian peninsula, RT reported.

Last week, a US strategic bomber flew a practice run for a missile attack on St. Petersburg, while staying in international and NATO airspace.

  • Kapil Sibal accuses ED of selectively targeting Opposition-governed states

Kapil Sibal accuses ED of selectively targeting Opposition-governed states

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Saturday accused the BJP-led government of misusing probe agencies, saying that the Enforcement Directorate sees the Indian map in a different way, targeting only Opposition-ruled states.

The former Union minister and eminent lawyer, while addressing a gathering at Jantar Mantar to lay down the agenda and a new vision for the country with his newly-launched platform ‘Insaaf’, referred to the raids on properties related to former Bihar chief minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family members, and said it was BJP’s reaction to losing power in Bihar.

“You can see what is happening in Bihar. They felt Tejashwi and JD-U are coming together… It’s been years since Lalu ji left the post of CM. They came to remember the case all of sudden,” he said.

“The ED sees the Indian map in a different way. They see only opposition ruled states, they don’t go to BJP states,” he said.

Congress MP from Rajya Sabha Vivek Tankha was also present at the dias with Sibal. Both Tankha and Sibal were a part of the rebel group of Congress leaders which came to be known as the ‘G-23’.

“Every political party has their own ideology, but when you read the preamble of the Indian Constitution, the basis of the Constitution is justice,” said Sibal.

Accusing the BJP of “buying” MLAs, and destabilising Opposition governments in states, he demanded stricter anti-defection laws.

“What kind of politics is this? Defectors become Ministers! Those who defect from their party should be banned from becoming ministers or fighting elections for five years” he said.

He also pitched for Rs 50,000 salary for school teachers, free education for women, and cheap healthcare among other things, as part of his new vision.

Tankha, meanwhile, said ‘Insaaf’ will become the voice of 130 crore people of India.

“Everyone wants justice, but there are a very few who can fight for it. This will become the voice of 133 crore Indians. We hope that it will transform transform into a people’s movement,” he said about the portal.

Several opposition leaders, including Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, have expressed support for Sibal’s platform to fight against justice.

At a press conference last week, Sibal had launched the platform against the “injustice prevailing in the country” calling on chief ministers and leaders of opposition parties to support him in his effort.

Sibal, who had been a Union minister during the UPA I and II, had quit the Congress in May last year and was elected to Rajya Sabha as an independent with the support of the Samajwadi Party.

Earlier, Sibal had announced that a website ‘insaafkesipahi.co.in’ has been set up to fight injustice and anyone could register on it.

The non-electoral political platform is called ‘Insaaf’ while anyone who registers on the website to fight injustice would become an ‘insaaf ka sipahi’.

This will be a national level platform where lawyers will be at the forefront, he had said.

Pulwama widows protest: Raj CM accuses BJP of politicising issue

    [ad_1]

Following Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirodi Lal Meena’s arrest on Friday, chief minister Ashok Gehlot accused the former of politicizing the issue regarding the demands brought up by widows of Pulwama attack martyrs.

On Saturday BJP workers thronged Ghelot’s residence. They threw stones at police barricades which were retaliated by lathi-charge by the cops.

The Pulwama widows protests have been going on for the last two weeks. The widows are demanding that the State grant government jobs to extended family members along with immediate ones on the basis of compassionate grounds.

Their other demands include construction of roads and installation of statues of the martyrs in their villages.

When asked about the lathicharge, senior BJP leader Sachin Pilot the issue needs to be dealt with sensitivity.

“There should not be a false message going outside that the government is not ready to listen to the widows of our martyrs. Demands such as construction of roads, erecting houses, and installing statues are doable. However, it is another thing that we accept all their demands,” Pilot said.

On Friday morning, the widows were shifted to nearby hospitals when they started protesting in front of Pilot’s residence in Jaipur.

  • AAP accuses CBI of mentally torturing Sisodia in its custody

AAP accuses CBI of mentally torturing Sisodia in its custody

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Sunday accused the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of mentally torturing former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and forcing him to sign a false confession paper in custody.

The former deputy of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI on February 26 in connection with the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.

Speaking at a press conference here, Atishi questioned the CBI’s actions while highlighting “the agency’s failure to prove any corruption charges against Sisodia”.

The AAP legislator from Kalkaji constituency asserted that despite thousands of hours of investigation, the full-time involvement of over 500 officers, thousands of pages of chargesheets, and over 50 hours of raids, “the investigation agencies have not been able to prove the corruption of even one rupee against Sisodia”.

She said that stories of torture in police custody, putting pressure, and forcing people to sign false confessions are often heard.

“If this could happen to Delhi’s former Deputy Chief Minister, it is a matter of great concern for the entire country, and there is a possibility that it could happen to anyone in the future,” she said.

Atishi further said that Sisodia was neither named in the CBI’s first chargesheet, nor was his name mentioned in the probe agency’s supplementary chargesheet.

“Then it was predicted that his name might appear on the ED’s chargesheet. However, Manish Sisodia was not even named in the chargesheet submitted by the ED,” she said, adding his name did not appear on any of these chargesheets, as neither the CBI nor the ED has any evidence against him.

The AAP legislator also accused the CBI of arresting Sisodia without any evidence “to please its political masters”.

“He was arrested on the basis of a false charge of non-cooperation and that his arrest was not made on the basis of any evidence or documentary proof,” she said.
