Pratapgarh: Lovelesh Tiwari, one of the accused in the murders of gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, is active on the social media despite being lodged in the Pratapgarh jail.

The Banda police are said to have taken serious cognisance of the contents posted on Tiwari’s social media accounts over the last two weeks.

The posts are inflammatory and hateful in nature, according to the police.

One of the accounts with the name “Maharaj Lovelesh Tiwari ChuChu” has been locked.

SP Banda Abhinandan said the police were trying to look for the person handling Tiwari’s social media accounts.

“We have started an investigation. This is serious,” he said.

Tiwari is one of the three hitmen who eliminated the brothers, who were in police custody, on April 15 in Prayagraj.

One of the posts shared on April 19 asked if people supported Tiwari. The post elicited 326 votes, with 42 likes and six comments.

In another account, a picture of Tiwari with his parents was shared on April 24.

A similar picture was posted on April 19 in another profile that is locked.

On Monday, eight posts were updated in quick succession on what is said to Tiwari’s primary account.

    They were hateful in nature.

Officials said it appeared that others have access to Tiwari’s accounts and were posting on his behalf.

Tiwari is from Banda where his family lives.

  • UN group to tour Los Angeles jails accused of ‘squalid, inhumane’ conditions

UN group to tour Los Angeles jails accused of ‘squalid, inhumane’ conditions

    [ad_1]

A United Nations human rights group is touring Los Angeles county jails on Friday, bringing international scrutiny to a detention system criticized for overcrowding, mistreatment and abuse of people with mental illnesses, and conditions described by civil rights groups as “barbaric”.

A panel of experts appointed by the UN human rights council and formed after the murder of George Floyd is visiting LA as part of a two-week trip to cities across the US examining racial justice and police violence. In California, the investigators will meet with families of people killed by police and formerly incarcerated people. They will also enter the LA county jail system, the largest in the country, which is run by the LA sheriff’s department (LASD).

The jails, which house roughly 14,000 people, have been mired in scandals for decades, but have faced growing national outrage over reports of violence by guards, systemic misconduct and racism, medical neglect, preventable deaths, extended use of solitary confinement, unsanitary cells and other conditions that civil rights leaders say amount to torture.

Advocates for incarcerated people have repeatedly warned of a humanitarian catastrophe behind bars over the last year, even after a federal judge in September 2022 ordered the LASD to address civil rights violations and four US senators raised concerns about the “appalling” crisis.

In the summer of 2022, attorneys with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which has ongoing LA jail litigation dating back to the 1970s, visited the jail system’s booking facility, known as the inmate reception center (IRC), and documented that people with serious mental illnesses were chained to chairs for days and were forced to sleep sitting upright. Dozens were crammed sleeping head-to-foot on concrete floors. People were defecating in trash cans and had no access to showers or clean clothes for days. Detainees also lacked adequate access to drinking water and food, and people with serious health issues were not accessing medications or care.

In declarations from 23 people inside the jail in February, some said they were freezing without blankets, covering themselves with plastic bags to stay warm, going hungry, denied prescribed medications, suffering delusions and stuck in dirty living quarters. Photos from inside the IRC showed detainees lying on the ground, trash strewn about near them.

“The conditions are squalid, unsafe and inhumane,” said Corene Kendrick, ACLU National Prison Project deputy director, who has visited the jails. “It is incredibly difficult to see people suffering in such a way, and it’s just viewed as normal and acceptable … We’re glad the United Nations is coming in to see the human rights violations that are occurring every day.”

The UN will probably pay close attention to the racial disparities in the jails. LA county is 8% Black, while the jail population is 29% Black. Kendrick noted: “You can draw a straight line back to the racist police practices and LA county law enforcement’s disproportionate focus on communities of color.”

The LASD has also faced criticisms over a jail complex called Twin Towers, which houses people with mental illnesses and which the department says is the “largest mental health facility” in the US. Alex Sherman, a lawyer and county-appointed commissioner on an oversight group that inspects the jail, described observing a grotesque scene earlier this year with cells covered in human waste and infested with bugs: “The international attention these facilities receive could cause a lot of embarrassment to the county.”

This isn’t the first time LA advocates have sought intervention from watchdogs outside the US. In 2014, Dignity and Power Now, an LA nonprofit group that has fought for alternatives to incarceration, submitted a report on violence against Black people with mental illnesses in the jails to a UN convention. “A decade later, the dynamics of racial discrimination have not changed, and that’s one of the most damning components,” said Mark-Anthony Clayton-Johnson, co-executive director of the group and chair of the county’s jail oversight commission.

“There is a longstanding culture that is very self-aware of its ability to evade accountability, to act with impunity and to dehumanize people in the jails, particularly Black people,” he added.

    skip past newsletter promotion

An LASD spokesperson said in an email on Thursday that the visit would include stops at Twin Towers, Men’s Central and the women’s jail, but did not offer further details. In court last week, county officials admitted that the department had not complied with an injunction ordering it to clean the jails, and a judge has called for a hearing to decide whether the county is in contempt of court, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Salimah Hankins, director of the UN Antiracism Coalition, which is coordinating civil society group meetings with the UN experts, noted that there is a long history of Black activists, including Malcolm X, appealing to the UN and similar entities. “There’s this understanding that the LA jail system is serving the purpose of the subjugation particularly of Black bodies … It’s really important from an advocacy perspective for people to see that the world – and the UN represents that – has its eyes on what’s happening in jails and detention centers.”

Hankins said there was much less visibility to brutality behind bars compared with police violence on the street caught on cellphone cameras, and that she hoped the UN trip would give a voice to those incarcerated. “This is just one way we can tell folks inside, ‘We love you, we have not forgotten about you, we are pushing for you,’” she said.

The UN panel also has stops in Atlanta, Washington DC, Chicago, Minneapolis and New York City.

Will continue protest until accused is punished: Sangeeta Phogat

    [ad_1]

Delhi: Sangeeta Phogat, a rising Indian wrestler and Bajrag Punia’s wife, on Friday said that the wrestlers will continue to protest and fight for justice.

Indian wrestlers are protesting at Jantar Mantar in the national capital against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment.

Top Indian grapplers such as Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and many other wrestlers are involved in the protest against the WFI chief.

    MS Education Academy

“We didn’t get justice earlier. We were fighting for justice earlier and we are fighting for justice now. We will continue to do so until the accused is punished. So we will continue to protest here.

The girls have blamed him for sexual harassment so an FIR should be registered and he should get punished according to the acts. As you can see nobody came to us we didn’t receive a phone call nobody has told us that we will get justice,” Sangeeta Phogat said.

Commonwealth Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat also expressed her frustration on Thursday with Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha’s comments on the wrestlers’ protest against the WFI and its president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.

Earlier, PT Usha said on Thursday that the wrestlers should have approached the IOA instead of going out in the streets against the WFI and its president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, who the wrestlers accused of sexual harassment and mismanagement of athletes.

“Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is having a committee for sexual harassment, instead of going to the streets they (protesting wrestlers) could have come to us earlier but they did not come to IOA. It is not good for sports not only for wrestlers, they should also have some discipline,” said Usha to the media.

Wrestlers have expressed disappointment with Usha’s comments.
“Being a woman athlete, she (PT Usha) is not listening to other women athletes. We have followed her since childhood and got inspired by her. Where is indiscipline here, we are sitting here peacefully..” Sakshi Malik told mediapersons.

Vinesh Phogat, the CWG and World Championships medalist also called Usha’s comments “insensitive”.
“We live as per the constitution and are independent citizens. We can go anywhere.

If we are sitting out in the streets, there must be some reason, a reason that nobody listened to us, be it IOA or Sports Ministry. Her saying this is insensitive. I even called her, but she did not pick up my phone,” said Vinesh.

Bajrang Punia, the Olympic medalist also said, “You feel sad when she says these things because she is the IOA Chief and a woman herself, she cried for her academy in front of the media. She wants us to approach IOA, but we went there three months back, but no justice was given.”

  • Telangana HC cancels bail of key accused in Viveka murder case

Telangana HC cancels bail of key accused in Viveka murder case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Thursday cancelled the bail of Yerra Gangi Reddy, the prime accused in the murder case of former Andhra Pradesh minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy.

It directed him to surrender before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court by May 5.

The court also clarified that if the accused failed to surrender, the CBI may arrest him.

    MS Education Academy

It ruled that as the CBI is scheduled to complete the hearing on June 30, Gangi Reddy may be granted bail on July 1 on a personal bond of Rs 1.50 lakhs.

The Supreme Court had recently extended the deadline for completing the investigation into the sensational case till June 30.

The CBI sought the cancellation of the bail on the ground that Gangi Reddy is the main accused and has been influencing key witnesses in the case.

The probe agency’s counsel had argued that Gangi Reddy is having political backing and is trying to put pressure on the witnesses through his connections.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Andhra Pradesh Police, which was then investigating the murder case, arrested Gangi Reddy on March 28, 2019.

Gangi Reddy was granted default bail by a local court at Pulivendula on June 27, 2019, as the SIT had failed to file charge sheet in the specified period.

After the CBI took over the investigation and filed its charge sheet, it had approached the court to cancel his bail. The court had dismissed the CBI petition. Later, the Andhra Pradesh High Court also upheld the decision of the lower court.

Subsequently, the CBI had approached the Supreme Court, challenging the order of the High Court.

The Supreme Court in November last year transferred the trial in the murder case from Andhra Pradesh to CBI court in Hyderabad.

Consequent to this, the apex court asked the CBI to approach the Telangana High Court for cancellation of bail of Gangi Reddy.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was murdered at his residence in Pulivendula of Kadapa district on March 15, 2019, weeks before elections.

The 68-year-old was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The Supreme Court transferred the case to Hyderabad while observing that doubts raised by Suneetha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

Thai police investigate 10 deaths as woman accused of poisoning friend

    [ad_1]

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of premeditated murder after she was accused of poisoning a friend using cyanide in Ratchaburi, central Thailand, with police saying they are also investigating the circumstances of nine further deaths.

The accused, identified in Thai media as Sararath Rangsiwutthiporn, or Am, had travelled with her friend, Siriporn Khanwong, known as Koi, to make merit by releasing fish at a pier in Ratchaburi on 14 April.

Police said an autopsy had found cyanide in the victim’s body. They are investigating the deaths of nine more people known to Sararath.

Sararath, who was arrested on Tuesday morning, has not commented publicly on the accusations. Her lawyer told the broadcaster Channel 3 that such allegations were serious, and that evidence must be seen.

Surachate Hakparn, the assistant national police chief of the royal Thai police, said the accused was known to all of those who died, and that it was possible she had targeted them for financial reasons.

Surachate said police had identified 11 victims in total, including one person who survived. The survivor had gone to eat food with the defendant, he said. “The victim vomited and fainted, but she survived,” he said.

Surachate said the defendant denied all the charges. Autopsies had been carried out on three of the bodies, he said.

A report by Thai media said that items had been stolen from Siriporn, including two phones, two bags and money.

Recovering evidence from previous deaths that were considered suspicious would be challenging, Surachate said. “As no case was filed [at the time of such deaths] there wasn’t any investigation of crime scenes, or anything,” he said.

Surachate said police were not aware of any accomplice but that investigations would continue. Affected families were in contact with police, he said. “Some of them thought that their beloved died of natural causes. We will talk and find more links today,” he said.

  • Trump’s civil rape case: what is he accused of and what happens next?

Trump’s civil rape case: what is he accused of and what happens next?

    [ad_1]

The rape case brought in New York against Donald Trump by the famed advice columnist E Jean Carroll has caught the attention of America as the latest legal drama to involve the former US president.

The case is so far the only one to come to court among more than a dozen allegations of rape, groping and other sexual assaults made against Trump.

What does Carroll accuse Trump of?

Carroll has filed two separate lawsuits against Trump. The first accuses him of defamation after he accused her of lying in her book, What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal, in which she accuses Trump and other men of abusing her.

Carroll brought the second lawsuit after New York passed a law last year giving adult victims of sexual assault a window of one year to file civil actions against their assailants where the statute of limitations has expired. She is seeking damages after accusing Trump of assaulting her in a department store changing room in the mid-1990s.

The first lawsuit is on hold amid legal wrangling about whether the Trump can be sued for comments he made while president.

What was Trump’s response to the accusations?

Trump denied the allegations with his usual vigour, at various times saying that Carroll was “totally lying” and calling her a “nut job”. He also claimed that he would never have assaulted her because she was “not my type”.

Trump also claimed never to have met Carroll, even though they were photographed together with their spouses in 1987.

He said: “I’ve never met this person in my life. She is trying to sell a new book – that should indicate her motivation. It should be sold in the fiction section.”

Why is the US justice department siding with Trump in Carroll’s defamation lawsuit?

The justice department asked to move the defamation case from state to federal court on the grounds that Trump’s public statements in 2019 denying rape were made as part of his job as president. The administration then argued that Carroll is not suing Trump as an individual but as an employee of the US government, and that therefore the government should be substituted for Trump as the defendant.

“The government thus asserts that this case is virtually identical in principle to a lawsuit against a Postal Service driver for causing a car accident while delivering the mail,” said the judge in considering the position.

The judge rejected the claim that the president is just another government worker and said that, in any case, his statements about Carroll were not within the scope of his employment.

The issue is due to be considered by the Washington DC appeals court.

What will happen if Trump loses the sexual assault case?

If the jury finds that Trump did rape or otherwise assault Carroll, it is likely to order him to pay damages. It will also mean that for the first time in US history, a jury will have found a former president is a rapist.

Political scientists say it is unlikely to do much damage to Trump’s run for the Republican presidential nomination next year because his more ardent supporters regard the various legal cases against him as a conspiracy.

But it will add to his already considerable political baggage in the general election and prove a further obstacle to re-election as president.
