BJP should accept their defeat, says AAP leader Atishi on ruckus at MCD house

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi on Friday alleged that the newly elected mayor Shelly Oberoi was physically assaulted by a BJP male member in the Civic Centre.

She urged the BJP to stop the “goondaism” in the Civic centre and said that BJP should accept their defeat.

While talking to ANI, Atishi said, “Today BJP showed goondaism in the Civic centre. A standing committee election was going on. When counting started BJP realised they were losing & they created a ruckus. The mayor was attacked & physically assaulted by a BJP male member.”

She further stated, “What behaviour is this? This is shameful and condemnable. The country is seeing this. BJP should accept their defeat. I request BJP to stop their goondaism. Those who have attacked the Mayor will be sent behind bars.”

Meanwhile, Aam Admi Party (AAP) Councillor Ashok Kumar Maanu collapsed at Delhi Civic Centre minutes back and alleged that the ruckus had been caused by the BJP goons.

While talking to ANI, Maanu said, “They are so shameless that they attacked even women and the Mayor. BJP goons did this.”

On the other hand, BJP leader Harish Khurana blamed Aam Admi Party behind the ruckus. He said, “Election officers declare the election and say that votes declared invalid by Mayor are valid and three candidates each of AAP and BJP have won. But AAP does hooliganism here as instructed by Kejriwal. We won’t tolerate this goondaism & approach the Court.”

On Friday, Maanu collapsed at Delhi Civic Centre as clashes broke out here between AAP and BJP councillors.

Ruckus broke out at Delhi Civic Centre once again as AAP and BJP Councillors jostled, manhandled and rained blows on each other.

This is the third day of commotion in the House.

On Friday, amid political slugfest, the voting process to elect six members of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) took place at the Civic Center in the national capital

Ahead of the election of six members of the MCD Standing Committee, Delhi MCD House witnessed sloganeering by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors.

In a jolt to the Aam Aadmi Party two days after it won the polls for the mayor and deputy mayor in the MCD, Bawana councillor Pawan Sehrawat joined the BJP on Friday.

The switchover happened shortly before the polling to elect members of the MCD’s Standing Committee on Friday.

Earlier, on Thursday, the House was adjourned for the 13th time since it convened post the MCD polls in December 4, last year, after councillors of the ruling AAP and the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party came to blows over polling to elect members of the Standing Committee.

MCD House: BJP, AAP members exchange blows, hurl plastic bottles

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Several members of the BJP and the AAP on Wednesday night exchanged blows and hurled plastic bottles at each other in the chamber of the MCD House, on a day the city got its new mayor.

A few BJP members claimed that some of their fellow party councillors got hit with objects flung in the air, while Mayor Shelly Oberoi alleged that some BJP councillors tried to attack her during the proceedings to hold the election to pick the six members of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The incident took place around 11 pm. It happened during the time the newly-elected mayor had adjourned proceedings.

Raja Iqbal Singh, former North Delhi mayor said, “I got hit in the back with a bottle, and there were apples and other things being flung around in the air during the commotion. It was unimaginable.”

The whole incident was triggered by bitter argument between the the members of the two parties over the mode of conducting the election to the six members of the Standing Committee.

“We have been asking them to hold election afresh, since mobile phone was taken to the booth area earlier by members as the mayor had allowed it. Later, when she disallowed it after we protested, we had asked for starting the process afresh, but the mayor was adamant,” BJP councillor Shikha Rai alleged.

Oberoi, an AAP leader, alleged that many BJP councillors tried to “attack” her when she was conducting the election.

“The extent of BJP hooliganism is that they are trying to attack a woman,” she was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the AAP later tonight.

Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal reacting to it said its “absolutely shocking and unacceptable”.

AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that the BJP was not allowing the standing committee elections to take place.

“We want elections (to six members of Standing Committee). Despite the Supreme Court’s order, BJP is still creating ruckus and not allowing elections to take place, but the House will continue to function until the election process is over,” he tweeted in Hindi.

Senior BJP leader Vijender Gupta held a press conference past midnight and slammed the AAP and Kejriwal for the incident today.

AAP won the election to the posts of both the mayor and deputy mayor.

The Standing Committee members’ election was held over an hour after the deputy mayor was elected.

During the brawl that took place around 11 pm, several members of both the parties, exchanged blows, hurled plastic bottles and lobbed fruits at each other in the chamber of the municipal House.

Around 10.20 pm, Shikha Rai and several of her party councillors climbed onto the dias while the mayor was still in the chair and pushed for their demands, following which Oberoi adjourned the House.

The House proceedings began around 11:30 am and business was conducted smoothly as AAP’s Oberoi emerged victorious in the mayoral poll, defeating BJP’s Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes.

After the mayoral election, the House was briefly adjourned and then it resumed to elect the deputy mayor, again AAP’s Aaley Mohammed Iqbal winning the election, defeating BJP’s Kamal Bagri

Mayor Oberoi then adjourned the House for an hour.

However, as the session didn’t resume after one hour, BJP councillor Shikha Rai told the municipal secretary that it was getting late and that the mayor be asked to come back to the House.

Meanwhile, many BJP members chanted ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ for several minutes, awaiting resumption of the House.

The session finally resumed around 6:15 pm and the proceedings to elect the six members of the MCD panel began.

As the mayor permitted carrying mobile phone to the booth area, BJP members opposed it.

Many of them later trooped to the Well of the House, and chanted anti-Arvind Kejriwal slogans.

“People who don’t maintain order in the House, will be thrown out,” the newly-elected mayor said.

Carrying of mobile phone and pen was not permitted during the proceedings of the election for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor. The BJP members were opposing the decision to allow it.

The mayor adjourned the House around 6:35 pm. Many members had already voted by then.

Seven candidates are in the fray for the six members of the standing committee.

Aamil Malik of Sri Ram Colony ward, Raminder Kaur from Fateh Nagar ward, Mohini Jeenwal of Sundar Nagari ward and Sarika Chaudhary of Daryaganj ward, are AAP’s candidates.

Kamaljeet Sehrawat from Dwarka-B ward and Pankaj Luthra from Jhilmil ward are BJP’s candidates.

Independent councillor Gajender Singh Daral, who later joined the BJP, is also a candidate.

At about 7:40 pm, the mayor asked members who had ballot papers with them, to return it, and that only then she would take a further decision.

BJP members then started chanting, “tanashahi nahi chalegi” (dictatorship will not be allowed).

A group of BJP members again trooped to the Well of the House, chanting, ‘Ek sadan mey do kanoon, nahin chalenge’.

BJP members also chanted ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’ to lodge their protest.

The mayor asked the protesting members to go back to their seats.

The House was then adjourned again around 8 PM, for 15 minutes. However, the House resumed around 9:30 pm, but BJP members continued to protest, asking the process to be started afresh.

The proceedings during the exercise to hold the election of six members of the MCD panel, were adjourned for nine times, the ninth one being at about 11:35 pm.

The brawl took place after the adjournment that took place for the eight time.

Even past midnight, it was still uncertain as to the finality of the election to pick the of six members of the panel.

On February 17, the Supreme Court had ordered issuing of a notice within 24 hours for convening the first meeting of the MCD to fix the date of elections for the mayor, the deputy mayor and the members of the standing committee of the civic body.

AAP slams EC ruling on Shiv Sena factions, calls it part of BJP’s ‘Operation Lotus’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday condemned the decision of the Election Commission of India to recognise the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the real Shiv Sena and said it was an extension of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “Operation Lotus”.

“Operation Lotus” is a term used by opposition parties alleging foul play on the part of the BJP to topple governments in states by poaching legislators and bringing about splits in ruling parties.

The Election Commission (EC) on Friday allotted the name ‘Shiv Sena’ and its poll symbol ‘bow and arrow’ to the group led by CM Shinde, in the process delivering a big blow to Uddhav Thackeray, whose father Bal Thackeray founded the outfit in 1966.

Institutions like the EC are acting as though choreographed to singularly benefit the BJP, whose culture is one of naked power grab through any means, AAP Mumbai president Preeti Sharma Menon said in a statement here.

“The conduct of EC will even put the proverbial ‘caged parrot’ to shame. Under BJP rule, institution after institution has been destroyed and have been reduced to mere ‘puppets’ and ‘rubberstamps’. The Election Commission is no exception. We have regressed as a democracy,” she alleged.

“The EC order is an extension of Operation Lotus,” she said, adding the Modi government at the Centre and the (state) governor were dubious in their conduct to give an illegal defection (rebellion by Shinde) the colour of a party takeover.

These dangerous acts strike at the very foundations of federalism of our Constitution, she said, adding the BJP’s undemocratic nature is reflective of the RSS’ anti-constitutional psyche.

Meanwhile, the party’s national joint secretary and working president Ruben Mascarenhas said the lotus blooms in dirt and Operation Lotus succeeded with the Congress and Shiv Sena “because there was dirt there”.

He said it did not succeed with the AAP as it is clean and has a playbook to defeat the BJP.

AAP ‘frustrated’ with defeat in Delhi Haj Committee election: BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi BJP has said that the AAP is “frustrated” after its defeat in Delhi Haj Committee election.

“It is strange that the Delhi Haj Committee was constituted by the Lt. Governor of Delhi on January 6 and Ms Atishi has today – after 40 days – reacted on it, calling the constitution of the Committee illegal,” Delhi BJP spokesperson Syed Yaseer Jilani said.

“The problem with AAP is that it can never digest defeat, and that too at the hands of a woman,” he added.

The BJP spokesperson further said that Arvind Kejriwal “does not believe in giving any position of authority to women, and he and his party are shocked to see that the BJP has given an opportunity to a woman to serve at Delhi Haj Committee”.

Jilani asserted that there is widespread “joy” amongst Muslim community especially the youth after the election of young Kausar Jahan as Chairperson of Delhi Haj Committee and “this is bothering AAP leaders”.

  • After DDA demolition drive stops, AAP seeks compensation for victims from L-G

After DDA demolition drive stops, AAP seeks compensation for victims from L-G

    [ad_1]

Delhi: After the much disputed DDA demolition drive in Mehrauli was stopped on Lt Governor VK Saxena’s direction, the Aam Aadmi party on Wednesday sought compensation from him for the victims of the area.

In a letter to the L-G, AAP MLA Somnath Bharti said, “Direct the concerned to assess the damages already caused to many houses by the said demolition and do the needful, including appropriate compensation and to get them reinstated at the locations from where they have been uprooted without any further delay”.

The AAP leader further said that till the time it takes place, please direct the concerned to put some makeshift arrangements like tents etc.

Bharti also sought the investigation into the issues, calling it “serious breach of transaction of business rules, Govt. of NCT of Delhi Act, Constitution of India and various judgments of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India” and has urged to punish the officials guilty of this severe dereliction.

“When it became apparent after making enquiries with District Magistrate (South) Office that the demarcation which became the basis of demolition, in Mehrauli, by DDA was neither in the knowledge of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal nor Revenue Minister Kailash Gehlot ji, then why the press release released from your office attributed the flawed demarcation to the Aam Aadmi Party Government? the letter reads further.

Such an attempt was surely political from the L-G office with the sole intent to malign the clean image of Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party government, he said.

“On 14.02.2023, the reason issued by your esteemed office for stopping the massive and inhuman demolition exercise being carried out by DDA in Mehrauli was the same which we have been agitating since day one under the leadership of Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal i.e. the flawed demarcation report.

“Had you agreed on this most important flaw brought out to you/your officers’ notice by us on day one of the demolition exercise which rendered many people, including old people, women and children homeless then such a massive tragedy would have been avoided”, the AAP MLA stated in the letter.

The letter reads, “Since in the urbanised villages applicability of Delhi Land Reforms Act ceases and hence the demarcation work should be carried out directly by DDA following the due process, which requires the demarcating agency to invite objections from the people who at present are residing on the land being demarcated and ensure their full participation before finalizing the demarcation report or if you still wish to go ahead with the Revenue Office of Delhi government then it is urged that offices of Chief Minister and Revenue Minister must not be bypassed”.

  • Centre threatening fourth pillar of democracy by raiding BBC: AAP

Centre threatening fourth pillar of democracy by raiding BBC: AAP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central government of threatening the fourth pillar of democracy by raiding the BBC.

Lashing out at the government over its actions, AAP leader Atishi said: “The BJP wants to suppress every word spoken or shown against the government. The Income Tax Raid on the BBC is an attack on the democracy of India. Media is the most important pillar of democracy, today the BJP Central government is trying to break the fourth pillar of democracy.”

Addressing the media, she said that this is a message to the entire media fraternity that if they show anything against the BJP and the PM, they will meet the same fate. Raising questions about the Centre’s intentions behind the action, she said: “BJP banned the documentary made by BBC to prevent the country from seeing these allegations unfold. India is at number 150 out of 180 countries in the Global Index of Press Freedom, today the whole world is questioning India’s democratic status.”

“Why has the BBC been raided? Because today, not only India but the entire world is discussing the BBC documentary. First of all, the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Central government got that documentary banned and removed from websites and social media so that no one in India is able to watch it. This was the first act of censorship by the BJP-ruled central government after the BBC’s documentary on Narendra Modi.”

And with today’s income tax raid, she alleged, that the BJP-led central government “is threatening all of us and asserting that no one, not even a globally famous organisation like the BBC can say, write, or show anything that is critical of their administration”.

Atishi asked the BJP to explain what image of India does it want to present to the whole world.

“History is witness that you can suppress the voice of the people for some time but you cannot suppress the voice of every person forever,” she said, appealing to the BJP to not intimidate the media like this, and stop tarnishing India’s image in front of the world.

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday staged a protest here, demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the allegations of malpractices against the Adani group in the Hindenburg Research report.

Workers of the party tried to march towards the Assam BJP headquarters on National Highway-27 in the Basistha area but were stopped by the police around 50 metres away from the place.

“We picked up many protesters and took them in a bus to the designated dharna site at Chachal. They were released there,” a senior police officer said.

“We demand a JPC probe into the latest allegations of malpractices in Adani stocks,” an AAP member said.

The protesters also raised slogans against the ruling BJP and billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani.

Adani Group stocks had taken a beating on the bourses after the US-based Hindenburg Research made several allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation.

The Gautam Adani-led group has dismissed the allegations.

The opposition parties have alleged that the meltdown in Adani Group shares is a scam that involves common people’s money as “LIC and SBI have invested in them”.

These parties have also been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the issue.

Adani row: Water cannon used against protesting AAP workers in Chandigarh

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police on Sunday used water cannon to prevent AAP workers from moving towards the BJP office here as part of their protest against the Centre over the Adani issue.

Aam Aadmi Party workers, gathered from various parts of Punjab, wanted to “gherao” the office of the Punjab BJP in Sector 37 here to register their protest against the party-led central government.

Barricades were put up and a heavy deployment of police was made to prevent the protesters from heading towards the Punjab BJP office.

Police used a water cannon when AAP workers tried to force their way towards the BJP office, said officials.

Carrying party flags, AAP workers shouted slogans against the BJP government over the Adani issue.

AAP MLA from the Jalalabad constituency Jagdeep Kamboj slammed the BJP alleging that it has failed on all fronts.

Later, police detained several party leaders and workers.

Earlier speaking to reporters at the party office, AAP leader Harchand Singh Barsat alleged that the Adani Group’s fortunes rose under the BJP rule.

Another AAP leader, Sunny Ahluwalia, said the party will continue to raise its voice over this issue.

Adani Group stocks had taken a beating on the bourses after US-based activist short-seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation, against the Gautam Adani-led group, which has dismissed the allegations as lies.

Opposition parties have been demanding a joint parliamentary committee probe into the issue.
