With 2 ex-ministers in jail, AAP plans door-to-door campaign

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi is planning to launch a door-to-door campaign to reach out to the people after two of its former ministers — Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, have landed in prison for their alleged involvement in graft cases.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that all the party leaders, MLAs and workers will go to the public to seek their support.

Addressing the media after a party workers’ gathering, Kejriwal said: “It is enough now. Just like Indira Gandhi had once done too much, they (without mentioning any name) are also doing too much. We will now go door-to-door to reach out to the public. All the leaders will descend on the ground and will go among the people.”

“They are alleging that (his former deputy) Manish Sisodia took money from the liquor company. They raided Sisodia’s house, tore up the mattresses and broke the walls. They even raided Sisodia’s paternal house… but nothing was found.

“If there was any scam of crores of rupees, at least some lakhs of rupees must have been found at his residence. They investigated his bank account and even the locker, but nothing was found. If he had taken crores of rupees, where is that money?” Kejriwal questioned.

The Delhi Chief Minister further said that two persons who brought laurels to India have been jailed by the Prime Minister.

“The excise policy is just an excuse… there was no scam. PM (Narendra Modi) wanted to stop the good work in Delhi. Sisodia was arrested as he did good work in education. Satyendar Jain was arrested as he did good work on health,” the Chief Minister said.

Kejriwal further said: “If Manish Sisodia joins the BJP today, won’t he be released tomorrow? All cases will be withdrawn. If Satyendar Jain joins the BJP today, he will be released from jail tomorrow. The issue is not corruption but to stop work, and send CBI-ED after the opposition.”

The AAP convenor said that not only the party but the whole country is proud of Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain who did exemplary work in their field.

Sisodia presented the model of education while Jain gave the model of primary healthcare. But Prime Minister Modi put such people behind bars, Kejriwal said.

Meanwhile, he ‘assured’ the people of Delhi that despite the arrest of their ministers in ‘false’ cases, the progress and development of Delhi will continue.

Congress stages protest against AAP, seeks Kejriwal’s resignation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi unit of Congress on Wednesday staged a protest outside the office of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) here, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, alleging they were also party to the now-scrapped excise policy.

Delhi Congress President Anil Kumar said that the resignations of Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain prove that the Kejriwal government was neck-deep in corruption and scams.

The Congress alleged that under the Kejriwal government, Delhi has witnessed a Rs 10,000 crore liquor scam, Rs 4,288 crore DTC scam, premium bus service scam, class room construction scam, toilet complex construction scam, ration scam, oxygen scam during the Covid-19 pandemic, DJB scam and PWD scam.

Addressing the Congress workers, Kumar said that the resignations of his ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, which were quickly accepted by Kejriwal, were clear proof that Kejriwal was “the mastermind of the liquor scam and all other corrupt deals under the Delhi government”.

“Therefore, he should also resign as CM along with Kailash Gahlot, to enable a transparent probe into the liquor scam, to expose the entire corruption behind the liquor deal,” the Congress leader said.

The Congress alleged that Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot was involved in a Rs 4,288 crore DTC bus purchase and maintenance scam, about which Delhi Congress had submitted a 1,000-page complaint to the CVC (Chief Vigilance Officer) and CBI on July 13-14, 2021, seeking a probe, adding the CBI took cognisance of the Congress’ complaint to file a case.

He said that instead of removing Gahlot from the ministry, Kejriwal entrusted him with eight important departments, as “Gahlot was also a partner in Kejriwal’s various scams”.

  • Delhi court discharges AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan in rioting case

Delhi court discharges AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan in rioting case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday discharged AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan in a case of alleged rioting and stone pelting on police personnel in May 2022 while opposing a demolition drive being carried out by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Special Judge Vikas Dhull passed the directions on an appeal filed by Khan against a magisterial court’s order.

The metropolitan magisterial court had directed framing of charges against Khan and others under sections 147 (rioting), 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of his public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant).

The sessions court on Wednesday said the magisterial court’s order suffered from “grave illegality” and was not sustainable in the eyes of law.

The judge said that the magisterial court had placed heavy reliance upon the statement of witnesses, even though video recording was not supporting the allegations made by the witnesses, to come to a prima facie view that charge is required to be framed against the revisionist and other accused persons.

The judge said there were two views possible, one of which, based upon the statement of witnesses, raises a suspicion only that revisionist and other accused persons had committed the offence alleged by the witnesses.

However, the other view, which was made out from the video recording did not raise a grave suspicion that revisionist and other accused persons had committed the offence alleged by the witnesses in their respective statements, the judge noted.

“It is a settled principle of law that if two views are possible and one view raises a suspicion only, then accused needs to be discharged. In the light of above discussion, the impugned order suffers from grave illegality and is not sustainable in the eyes of law,” the judge said while discharging Khan.

The metropolitan magistrate had on January 20 ordered framing of charges against Khan and others.

According to police, Khan, who was the area MLA, along with his supporters, had formed unlawful assembly and pelted stones on Delhi police personnel, besides damaging public property while opposing a demolition drive being carried out by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation in Kalindi Kunj area on May 12, 2022.

Reasonable force had to be used at the spot to curtail the crowd, police said, adding that several police officials got injured in the stone pelting.

The unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had formally come into existence on May 22 last year. It was reunified by merging three civic bodies – North, South and East municipal corporations or NDMC, SDMC and EDMC.

AAP is synonymous with ‘cut, commission and corruption’: BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Targeting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after the Supreme Court declined to entertain a plea filed by Manish Sisodia challenging his arrest by the CBI in connection with the 2021-22 Delhi liquor policy case, the BJP alleged on Tuesday that now the AAP has become synonymous with “cut, commission and corruption”.

The BJP will now raise the issue of corruption by AAP across the country and tell the people that AAP leaders have not got any relief in the matter from the Supreme Court.

Addressing the media at the party headquarters here, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the Supreme Court did not give any relief to Anna Hazare’s ‘great disciple’ Manish Sisodia in connection with the liquor policy case, which he termed as a ‘text book’ case of corruption.

“These people had claimed to fight corruption before coming to power in Delhi. But after assuming charge of the government, these same people worngfully gave away liquor contracts, reduced the drinking age and made a profit of Rs 100 crore. These people made people drink liquor by promising to open schools,” Prasad said.

Prasad also said that Sisodia and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had claimed that they are the torch-bearers of transparency in the country, but now they have maligned the legacy of Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement.

Holding Kejriwal directly responsible for the liquor policy case, the BJP leader said: “Can any minister dare to work in the Delhi government without asking Kejriwal? Now even the Punjab government functions only on his directions.”

Launching a scathing attack against AAP, Prasad said that he used to think that ‘cut and commission’ is the legacy of only one party, but today it has to be said that ‘3Cs’, i.e., ‘cut, commission and corruption’ are also synonymous with Kejriwal’s party.

“Sisodia must disclose why he changed 16 phones, why did he destroy evidence,” Prasad said.

The BJP leader also accused Kejriwal of lying repeatedly, adding that Kejriwal’s ministers, who had levelled allegations against the CBI and the Central government, are currently lodged in jail.

Arrested AAP ministers Sisodia, Satyendar Jain quit Delhi cabinet

    [ad_1]

Delhi ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain on Tuesday resigned from their posts in the state cabinet.

According to a report by ANI, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal accepted their resignation.

Manish Sisodia has been in control of 18 ministries, including Satyendar Jain’s health portfolio, who has been in jail for 10 months.

The resignations followed as the BJP questioned why arrested leaders remained in the Delhi administration.

The Delhi cabinet currently has five ministers, including Kejriwal.

This comes very soon after the Supreme Court’s decision to decline a plea by arrested Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia challenging his arrest by the CBI in an alleged case of corruption in the now-withdrawn Delhi liquor policy.

    [ad_1]

Jammu: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday staged a protest outside the BJP office here to protest against the arrest of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia by the CBI in connection with alleged corruption in the now-scrapped excise policy.

Several AAP leaders and workers from different parts of Jammu province gathered outside the BJP office at Trikuta Nagar and held a demonstration against the Central government, a party spokesman said.

“The BJP government at the Centre is arresting opposition leaders through various agencies by implicating them in various scams so that pressure can be put on them to suppress their voices,” AAP leader Amit Kapoor told reporters.

Demanding immediate release of Sisodia, he said his arrest is a “black chapter” in the democracy as he is innocent and making constant efforts to provide better education to children of poor families.

“AAP workers will not tolerate such kind of actions and will start a big movement against the BJP-led government,” he said, calling upon the party workers to unite to oppose such “anti-people and anti-democratic” steps.

CBI acting lawfully against corrupt, AAP does not believe in Constitution: BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party over its street protests against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s arrest, asserting that the CBI is acting lawfully against the “corrupt” but the city’s ruling party does not seem to believe in law, Constitution and people.

With its “drama” and show of “anarchy”, the AAP has signaled that it will not let probe agencies do their work which amounts to obstructing the process of justice and contempt of court, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told reporters after Sisodia was sent to the CBI remand till March 4 in the case of alleged irregularities and corruption in excise policy, now withdrawn.

The BJP leader described the AAP as the “Arajak Apradh Party” (anarchic, criminal party) and said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seems to have taken oath on the Constitution to destroy it, he alleged.

Neither does Kejriwal abide by the law nor he sacks his ministers involved in corruption, he said, noting that Satyendar Jain is behind bars for months in a money laundering case.

Jain has not received bail yet because courts believe that the charges against him are serious, the BJP leader said.

A special CBI court on Monday remanded Sisodia in five-day custody of the central probe agency till March 4, a day after his arrest in the excise scam case.

Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers held protests in several states against the arrest in connection with alleged corruption in the now-scrapped excise policy relating to the sale of alcohol.

For second day, AAP protests in Mumbai against Delhi Dy CM’s arrest

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: For the second consecutive day, the Aam Aadmi Party protested against the arrest of Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia by the Central Bureau of Investigation in an alleged corruption case, here on Monday.

On Monday, hundreds of AAP workers staged noisy demonstrations near Churchgate station, after a similar protest outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Sunday.

Incidentally, Sisodia’s arrest on Sunday came two days after the AAP’s Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had come for a high-profile meeting with the President of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra ex-CM Uddhav Thackeray in Mumbai (February 24), to discuss a common platform to fight the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Addressing the gathering near Churchgate on Monday, AAP Mumbai President Preeti Sharma-Menon said that this is a state of ‘undeclared emergency’ in the country and the party would not be cowed down by Sisodia’s arrest and said he was being targeted by the CBI without a base.

“We were born on the streets of India, protesting against corruption and injustice… If one Manish Sisodia is arrested, crores more like him will emerge,” thundered Sharma-Menon.

She alleged that on one hand there is Gautam Adani who scammed Indians of lakhs of crores of rupees and there is no action against him by the CBI, and there were many scandals by the Congress during the UPA regime, but the CBI did not act against any of its leaders.

“On the other hand, Sisodia, who is the architect of Delhi government’s education revolution is being unnecessarily hounded in a fake case… This is an attack on the excellent world-class education being imparted to millions of students by the Delhi administration,” she said.

Other leaders said that the BJP fears only APP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scared of only Arvind Kejriwal, and they are being targeted as AAP is the country’s fastest growing political party with the capacity to take on the BJP.

The Mumbai Police had deployed tight security around Churchgate and detained a large number of the protestors.

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party to hit roads and stage protests across the country on Monday against the arrest of Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor excise policy case.

AAP’s national General Secretary Sandeep Pathak said that they will protest across the country on Monday.

Taking to Twitter, Pathak on Sunday said, “The great Education Minister Manish Sisodia, who has shaped the future of lakhs of children of the country, has been arrested in a fake case. Against this, the Aam Aadmi Party will protest across the country tomorrow.”

The party will also stage protests at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Headquarters at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg in the national capital at around 12 pm om Monday.

It is believed that the party will also hold protests in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar, Haryana’s Rohtak, Noida, etc.

Sisodia was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation after eight hours of questioning in the now-scrapped excise policy case.

Shortly before arriving at the CBI office for questioning, the Deputy Chief Minister said false cases are being lodged against leaders of the party as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “afraid” of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

“Conspiracies are being hatched by the CBI and ED and false cases being lodged against our party leaders because PM Narendra Modi is afraid of CM Arvind Kejriwal’s rising popularity. As AAP grows further, BJP will continue to slap false cases on us. We are not afraid of the CBI, ED and their false cases,” Sisodia said, claiming that people were starting to regard the AAP as an alternative to the BJP.

Sisodia also visited Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial Rajghat before his arrest.

Reacting to the development his political aide and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal termed the arrest as “dirty politics” and claimed that he is innocent.

Taking to Twitter, Kejriwal said, “Manish is innocent. His arrest is dirty politics. There is a lot of anger among the people due to the arrest of Manish.”

“Everyone is watching. People are understanding everything. People will respond to this. This will boost our spirits further. Our struggle will get stronger,” he added in the tweet (roughly translated from Hindi).

Ahead of Sisodia’s CBI questioning, AAP leaders allege house arrest

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Ahead of the questioning of Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the excise policy scam by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday alleged that its leaders were being put under ‘house arrest’.

The Delhi Police have made elaborate security arrangements to stop all untoward incidents.

The AAP leaders, however, alleged that they “have been kept under house arrest by the police”.

The Delhi Police have put barricades at Lodhi Colony roads which leads to the CBI headquarters and no one is being allowed to go that side. Apart from this, the police have also put barricades outside Sisodia’s house and office and have deployed extra force to stop people going on that side.

At Lodhi Colony even the media was stopped by the police personnel posted over there.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has called it a tactic of the agencies to arrest Sisodia.

Sanjay Singh, the Rajya Sabha MP of AAP, has alleged that at the instructions of the Centre, agencies want to arrest Sisodia.

AAP MLA Atishi said that the BJP was trying to stop them, and that the allegations levelled on Sisodia were vague.

“Our leaders have been stopped at their house by the Delhi Police. Our leaders are in house arrest. We can’t come out of our houses. Delhi police are being misused by the Centre,” said Atishi.

Sisodia was earlier asked to appear before the CBI on February 19, but he sought a deferment by one week as he was giving final touches to Delhi’s budget.

The CBI accepted his request and issued him a second notice to join the probe on February 26.

He is likely to reach CBI headquarters by 11 a.m.
