BRS & AAP to boycott Prez address

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have decided to boycott the Presidential address on Tuesday to highlight the failure of the Union Government, while Leader of Opposition (LoP) Mallikarjun Kharge and several Congress leaders are stuck at Srinagar airport due to bad weather.

Sanjay Singh of the AAP said that the address is a bundle of lies and that the AAP will boycott it.

He said in a tweet, “Hon’ble President’s speech is a bundle of false promises and false claims by the Modi government. This address will not have President’s own words. Modi government has proved to be a failure on every front. @AamAadmiParty will boycott the President’s address…”

Congress MP and party General Secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh tweeted on Tuesday, “Due to delayed flights from Srinagar airport on account of inclement weather conditions, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, @kharge ji & many other Congress MPs will be unable to attend the President’s address to both Houses of Parliament at 11 am today.”

President Droupadi Murmu will address the joint sitting of Parliament for the first time since being elected to the post. She will outlay the government’s vision for the current year.

The Parliament Budget session will commence on Tuesday and the Finance Minister will table the Economic survey. She will present the Union Budget on Wednesday.

President Droupadi Murmu, in her first Republic Day eve speech, hailed India’s G-20 presidency, saying it is an opportunity to promote democracy and multilateralism, and also the right forum for shaping a better world and a better future.

“India holds the presidency of the Group of 20 nations. With our motto of universal brotherhood, we stand for the peace and prosperity of all. Thus, the G20 presidency is an opportunity to promote democracy and multilateralism and the right forum for shaping a better world and a better future. Under India’s leadership, I am sure, the G20 will be able to further enhance its efforts to build a more equitable and sustainable world order.”

She said the ultimate goal is to create an environment in which all citizens can — individually and collectively, realize their true potential and prosper.

  • AAP govt’s mega project to transform 1,400 kms Delhi roads to kick off from April 1

AAP govt’s mega project to transform 1,400 kms Delhi roads to kick off from April 1

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Repairing broken pavements, central verges and manholes, resurfacing roads and sprinkling of water on them on a daily basis — these are some of initiatives that will be undertaken as part of the Delhi government’s mega project to transform the city roads that will kick off from April 1.

Addressing a press conference, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said about Rs 4,500 crore will be spent on the project in the first year and then Rs 2,000 crore every year.

The Delhi government will also introduce deep scrubbing machines and litter picker machines, he said, adding that it will also hire over 100 mechanised road sweepers, over 150 sprinkler tankers and 250 anti-smog-guns-cum-sprinklers.

The chief minister said they will be transforming a total of 1,400 kms of roads that come under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Public Works Department.

He added that heavy penalties will be imposed on the contractor in case of any shortcoming in the project.

The entire system will be monitored remotely from a dashboard and there will be a centralised complaint system for citizens to reach out to the government, he said.

“The PWD has jurisdiction only on roads wider than 18m (45ft) across the national capital, and we will leave no stone unturned to transform them,” he said.

Kejriwal said all the footpaths and central verges along the roads will be repaired when necessary.

“This means that in contrast to the usual practice of replacing footpaths on the entire stretch as adopted by governments who want to spend away all public funds, in this project, we will take up spot-repairs.

“If one stone is missing, it will be replaced. If two are damaged, they will be repaired. We will not misuse public funds,” he explained.

Outlining the timeline for the project, he said the work orders will be issued by March 20 and the work will commence from April 1.

He said the repair work will be completed within six months and once it is complete, a 10-year maintenance contract will be put in place.

Roads will be resurfaced every five years while regular painting of roads, medians, central verges will be taken every three to six months, he said.

“All roads and footpaths will be washed in a daily basis or thrice a week,” he said.

He asserted that all central verges will be repaired along with damaged manholes, street furniture, railings, precast slabs, signages and electrical poles.

“In all the city subways, the railings and light fittings will be repaired, as will the foot over bridges. Beyond these, civil and electrical repairs, all potholes and cracks on roads will be repaired,” he said.

All railings, trees and plants around the roads will be washed as well, he said.

The government is also introducing deep scrubbing machines to thoroughly clean the roads of all dirt and litter picker machines to pick up all littered material and debris from the roads.

“We will hire over 100 mechanised road sweepers, over 150 sprinkler tankers and 250 anti-smog-guns-cum-sprinklers. There are 250 wards in Delhi and each ward will get one machine. The 150 sprinkler tankers will be deployed on the large PWD roads.
“But the 250 smog guns will be handy in cleaning the smaller roads and lanes in the city. These machines too will be engaged for 10 years. 10,000 kilolitres of water will be needed for this purpose. We will be using the water treated at Delhi Jal Board’s STPs for this purpose, instead of discharging it into the Yamuna,” he said.

The chief minister said all posters, banners and other material stuck on roadsides will be removed on a daily basis, with the government taking up tree plantation on a very large scale on the roadsides and central verges.

“A 10-year contract will be awarded for daily maintenance, washing, trimming, soil upkeep and watering of such plants. This project also needs rigorous monitoring, so we will deploy a third party monitoring system.

“Camera-enabled vehicles will go around Delhi throughout the day and record the live situation of the roads and maintenance work,” he said.

  • Karnataka AAP demands transparency in probe into ‘Santro Ravi’s’ Case

Karnataka AAP demands transparency in probe into ‘Santro Ravi’s’ Case

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Karnataka unit of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has posed several questions to the ruling BJP government in Karnataka about the investigation in power broker ‘Santro Ravi’s’ case.

K.S. Manjunath, also known as ‘Santro Ravi’, was nabbed by the Gujarat Police earlier this moth. The alleged human trafficker was on the run for the past 11 days. Ravi was in the eye of a political storm over his alleged role in police transfers and links to several politicians. He has at least 21 criminal cases lodged against him related to human trafficking, murder, fraud, and kidnapping.

Speaking to the press at the party office here, AAP’s communication in-charge for Karnataka, Brijesh Kalappa, said, “It has been over two weeks since the arrest of Santro Ravi, but the government has not goven any information about the investigation. Are they trying to shield him or do away with him?”

Kalappa asked several pointed questions to the government, including why Ravi was apprehended in Gujarat and not in Karnataka, what was the reason for his visit to Gujarat, and who were the people with whom Ravi had business dealings.

He also questioned the government’s lack of action against those who may have helped Ravi amass a wealth of Rs 1000 crore, and asked why the ED, CBI, or the Income Tax department are not probing how Ravi acquired so much money.

In response to a question about ADGP Alok Kumar’s comment that the investigation only pertains to the harassment complaint filed by Ravi’s wife, Kalappa said, “Why is the ADGP not investigating the links of this white-collar criminal with the politicians? Alok Kumar should not give in to political pressure. If he is working on the behest of politicians, he is incompetent to hold to his post.”

Kalappa also asked who helped Ravi stay in the Kumara Kurpa government guest house and questioned the reported overdose of drugs found in Ravi’s system. He compared the lack of information about Ravi’s case to that of Ajmal Kasab, pointing out that the public had more information about Kasab’s whereabouts and daily activities.

“Of the three political parties, both Congress and JD(S) have fallen silent on the issue of Santro Ravi, after Ravi himself said that he has provided his services to all the three political parties. They are hand-in-glove in both Santro Ravi and Shirki’s case and are happy with the government’s inaction against these criminals,” the AAP leader said.

AAP appoints Chaitar Vasava as Gujarat legislature party leader

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday appointed tribal MLA Chaitar Vasava as its legislature party leader in Gujarat and Hemant Khava as the deputy leader, it said in a release.

Vasava represents the reserved Dediapada assembly constituency in Narmada district, while Khavais is an MLA from Jamjodhpur in Jamnagar district.

A legislature party comprises the members of a particular party in the House.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led party had contested in 181 of Gujarat’s 182 constituencies in last year’s assembly elections but could win only five seats despite claiming to be the main contender to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

The BJP, on the other hand, registered a historic victory by winning a record 156 seats.

Despite the defeat of its top leadership, the AAP polled 12.6 per cent votes. Four of its candidates won seats in the Saurashtra region, and one in a tribal seat of south Gujarat.

Other than Vasava and Khava, the other winners were Umesh Makwana from Botad, Sudhir Vaghani from Gariadhar, and Bhupat Bhayani from Visavadar.

  • AAP urges EC to curb ‘allurements’ by politicians in Karnataka

AAP urges EC to curb ‘allurements’ by politicians in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has submitted a complaint to the State Election Commission of Karnataka, seeking “severe punishment” against political parties that are enticing voters with incentives such as cookers, sarees, bangles, and silver Ganesha idols.

“It is challenging to identify when and where corrupt politicians distribute items such as cookers and sarees to voters,” AAP’s Karnataka unit working president Mohan Dasari said while addressing the media on Friday.

“Our honest volunteers were able to investigate and uncover such instances. Despite the difficulties, we were able to convince voters to return the items and bring them to light. It’s concerning that politicians are giving away items like silver Ganesha idols, leading to questions about the fairness of the election. The Election Commission needs to take immediate action against these practices,” he added.

“The BJP, Congress, and the JD-S are undermining the principles of democracy by offering gifts to voters,” Dasari said.

Stating that voters should make their decisions based on the background, ideology, accomplishments, and promises of politicians, not by the gifts they receive, the AAP leader said: “These politicians are using the tax money of the public, which they have looted during their tenure, to bribe voters. The public should not be swayed by such tactics and instead vote for honesty and integrity.”

“Politicians are taking advantage of the fact that the model code of conduct is only enforced once the election process begins. They are offering bribes even before the code of conduct is in place.

“To ensure a fair election, the Election Commission should take action to stop these bribes before the model code of conduct comes into effect. There should be an investigation to reveal the source of the funds used to make these lavish offers,” he added.

  • AAP moves SC seeking time-bound mayoral polls in Delhi

AAP moves SC seeking time-bound mayoral polls in Delhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party has moved the Supreme Court over the repeated adjournments of mayoral polls in Delhi.

In its suit, the AAP has demanded time-bound urgent mayoral elections and has also sought the prohibition on voting by aldermen as per law.

“People of Delhi gave majority to the Aam Aadmi Party in the MCD but BJP is not allowing us to form a government in the MCD. Aam Aadmi Party has moved the Supreme Court through its Leader of the House and Mayor candidate (Shelly Oberoi). We have placed two major demands in the Supreme Court, the first is to elect the Mayor in a time-bound manner and form the government in the MCD. Second, as aldermen do not have the right to vote under Article 243R of the Constitution and Section 3 of the DMC Act, they should be prohibited from casting votes,” said AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj.

Noting that the BJP’s MCD tenure ended in March 2022 itself, he said that “they have no moral right to capture and illegally control the MCD for so long”.

The MCD was put under the Central government on the pretext of unification and delimitation works, he said.

“Now the people of Delhi have given a majority to the Aam Aadmi Party in the MCD and elected 134 councillors of the AAP. Despite that, the BJP is not allowing the Aam Aadmi Party government to be formed in the MCD due to its conspiracy and dirty politics. Despite many efforts, they are not allowing the election of the Mayor and the formation of the government to take place,” he said.

“The court should complete this process as soon as possible. Because the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Central Government will not allow to complete this process. The Aldermen, in principle and in law, are unelected nominees and do not have the right to vote under Article 243R of the Constitution and Section 3 of the DMC Act. But the BJP wants to get them to vote by committing hooliganism. The Supreme Court should also give strict orders in this matter to the Central Government and the administration of MCD in this regard.”

The Mayoral election was first scheduled for January 6, but the House was adjourned following scuffle between the councillors of the BJP and the AAP. Then a session was convened on January 24 to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and members of the Standing Committee.

However, after all the 250 newly-elected MCD councillors and 10 nominated members (aldermen) took their oath, the House was again adjourned until the next date after a ruckus created by the councillors of AAP and BJP.

The results of the MCD elections were declared on December 7, wherein out of the 250 seats, the AAP got majority by winning 134 seats, followed by BJP (104), Congress (nine) and Independents (three).

AAP to launch foray into Rajasthan with massive membership drive

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The AAP is set to roll out a massive membership drive in Congress-ruled Rajasthan on Friday as part of its preparations for the assembly polls, likely to be held later this year.

The membership drive will be launched in Jaipur by AAP National General Secretary (Organisation) Sandeep Pathak.

Vinay Mishra, the AAP’s election in-charge for Rajasthan, will also be present.

“The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) National General Secretary Sandeep Pathak and Rajasthan Election In-charge Vinay Mishra will launch a massive membership drive in Rajasthan on January 27,” a senior AAP leader told PTI.

The membership drive will be rolled out at Biyani Group of College in Jaipur, the AAP leader said.

“All the leaders and workers of the AAP’s Rajasthan unit will be present on the occasion,” the leader added.

The move comes within a month of AAP poll strategist Pathak, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, holding a crucial meeting with the party’s Rajasthan unit leaders and volunteers in the national capital. During the meeting, he asked them to pull up their socks to make the party’s foray into the Congress-ruled state a success.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led party set its eyes on Rajasthan soon after it stormed to power in Punjab, crushing the ruling Congress in the assembly polls last March.

The party, which could not open its account in its maiden foray into Rajasthan in the 2018 assembly polls, has decided to field candidates in all 200 seats this time.

The AAP contested from 142 assembly seats in the 2018 Rajasthan polls but failed to win a single one.

Buoyed by its electoral success in the assembly polls in Punjab, Goa and Gujarat last year that paved the way for it to earn national party status, the AAP is hoping to gain some toehold in Rajasthan this time.

While the Kejriwal-led party recorded a stupendous victory in the Punjab polls, it managed to breach the BJP’s Gujarat bastion, winning five seats and securing 13 per cent of the vote share in the assembly elections held in two phases in December.

Earlier last year, it won two seats in the Goa assembly polls.

  • AAP accuses Delhi BJP leaders of amassing disproportionate assets

AAP accuses Delhi BJP leaders of amassing disproportionate assets

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday accused former Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta and its ex-national vice president Shyam Jaju of amassing properties worth crores disproportionate to their known sources of income when the former was the mayor of the erstwhile North Delhi civic body.

Gupta, however, termed the allegations “false and politically motivated”.

AAP leader Durgesh Pathak said the BJP should cancel the primary membership of Gupta and Jaju within two days, failing which the Aam Aadmi Party will take to the streets and gherao the BJP headquarters.

“The former state president and in-charge of the BJP got a company (promoted by their sons) registered on the address of the party office… They own 40 to 45 properties in Delhi and neighbouring areas. The Lokayukta has sent them three notices but they have not replied yet,” he alleged.

Demanding that both the BJP leaders reveal the source of their income within two days, Pathak said there should be a thorough investigation to ascertain if they had the backing of senior leadership of their party.

There should be a probe to find out if there is a link between the rise of the two leaders and the “downfall” of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, he said.

The AAP’s chief spokesperson and MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj said the Lokayukta is conducting a probe into the allegation of disproportionate assets against Gupta.

“Despite the Lokayukta issuing notices multiple times, Adesh Gupta did not declare his source of income. The company promoted by the sons of Gupta and Jaju is under the scanner for allegedly using as it a vehicle to aid financial wrongdoings,” he claimed during a press conference.

Bhardwaj claimed that a complaint with the Lokayukta has claimed that Gupta got the company incorporated while he was the North Delhi MCD mayor and his earnings are disproportionate to his declared sources of income.

Delhi Lokayukta Justice H C Mishra (retired) issued notices to Adesh Gupta from August 2022 to January 2023 asking him to declare his assets and sources of income, but he has not provided any information to date, he claimed.

“The Lt Governor should write a letter to the Anti-Corruption Branch and CBI about how these properties were bought and sold. The centre should take up a detailed investigation of the case to prove whether it believes in the principle of anti-corruption or not,” he said.

Reacting to the allegations, Adesh Gupta said, “I will file a defamation case against Saurabh Bhardwaj. They have a history of making false allegations and then apologising to BJP leaders following defamation cases. Bhardwaj should also be prepared for this.

“I respect the Lokayukta and will share all the details. Every year, I share details of my assets with the government. I am a dedicated BJP worker and have been exposing corrupt acts of the AAP and they are targeting me and my family to suppress my voice,” he claimed.

DCW chief molestation case: Accused AAP member, sting done to defame Delhi Police, claims BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP on Friday raised questions over DCW chief Swati Maliwal’s molestation claims, alleging that the person she accused is an AAP member and her “drama” was part of a conspiracy which has now been “exposed”.

Several BJP leaders hit out at Maliwal, an Aam Aadmi Party appointee.

An immediate reaction was not available from the AAP on the issue.

Maliwal, chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, had alleged that she was molested by a drunk man while on an inspection at night and dragged for 10-15 metres by his car outside AIIMS with her hand stuck in the vehicle’s window. The accused, a 47-year-old man, was arrested.

BJP leader Shazia Ilmi tweeted that Maliwal’s “drama” has been exposed.

“@AamAadmiParty and… did a sting to defame Delhi and its police and serious questions arise on its credibility. Is cheap politics legitimate on the serious issue of women safety? she asked.

Former DCW chief Barkha Shukla Singh said by indulging in such drama, Maliwal should not weaken women.

Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva said Harish Chandra Suryavanshi, who was accused of harassing Maliwal, is actually a prominent activist of the Aam Aadmi Party in Sangam Vihar.

Sachdeva released a photo in which the accused is seen campaigning with AAP MLA Prakash Jarwal.

Sachdeva said with the revelation of the photo and Suryavanshi’s background, “it has become clear that the incident was a conspiracy of AAP to defame Delhi internationally by showing the city as an unsafe city for women”.
