  • Saudi Aramco overtakes Microsoft as world’s 2nd largest company by market value

Saudi Aramco overtakes Microsoft as world’s 2nd largest company by market value

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: Saudi oil giant Aramco has displaced American technology giant Microsoft to become the world’s second-largest company by market value at 7.92 trillion Saudi Riyals (2.11 trillion dollars) as the company’s stock prices hit 36 Saudi Riyals (9.60 dollars) on Wednesday, local media reported.

Apple still holds the top of the ranking, with a market value of approximately 2.6 trillion dollars, followed by Aramco at 2.11 trillion dollars, then Microsoft at 2.05 trillion dollars.

According to Arabic daily Al-Arabiya.net, the rise in Saudi Aramco’s shares came after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced, this month, the transfer of 4 per cent of its shares to Sanabel Investment Company, which is wholly owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF).

    MS Education Academy

Aramco achieved, in 2022, the highest profits since the listing, up by 46.5 per cent, to reach 604 billion Saudi riyals, compared to 412.4 billion Saudi Riyals in 2021.

It is noteworthy that “Aramco” is the most profitable company in the world, as its profits for the year 2022 exceed the profits of “Apple”, “Microsoft” and “ExxonMobil” combined, according to the classification of the “companies market cap” website.

The rise of Aramco’s shares also coincided with the rise in crude oil prices, the increase in the company’s sales volumes, the significant increase in profit margins from the refining and chemicals business, as well as the decline in US crude stocks, despite the pessimistic global economic outlook.

  • Viveka murder case: CBI questioning Kadapa MP for 2nd straight day

Viveka murder case: CBI questioning Kadapa MP for 2nd straight day

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was questioning Kadapa MP Y S Avinash Reddy for the second consecutive day on Thursday in former minister Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case.

Avinash Reddy, who was grilled for about eight hours on Wednesday, appeared before the agency at its regional office here at 10.30 a.m.

The CBI officials were also questioning Avinash Reddy’s father Y. S. Bhaskar Reddy and another accused Uday Kumar Reddy for a second day. The duo was brought from Chanchalguda Jail to the CBI office.

    MS Education Academy

On the first day, the CBI officials had questioned them separately and it is not clear if Avinash Reddy will be questioned in the presence of his father and Uday Kumar Reddy.

The CBI team is gathering information from the accused about the reasons for the murder, events of the day when the crime was committed and their movements on the day.

Avinash Reddy, cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, has to appear daily before the CBI till April 25, as per the direction of the Telangana High Court.

This was the fifth time that the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MP appeared before the CBI.

The Telangana High Court had on Tuesday directed the CBI not to arrest Avinash Reddy till April 25.

In its interim order on anticipatory bail petition of the MP, the court directed him to appear before the CBI daily till April 25.

The CBI had summoned Avinash Reddy for questioning on April 17 but the agency twice deferred the questioning due to hearing of his anticipatory bail petition.

The final order on the anticipatory bail plea will be delivered on April 25.

On Tuesday, the CBI sent Bhaskar Reddy and Uday Kumar Reddy to CBI custody for six days. They will be questioned every day between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Bhaskar Reddy was arrested by the CBI on April 16 while his follower Uday Kumar Reddy was arrested on April 14 in Pulivendula town of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. Both were brought to Hyderabad where a court sent them to judicial custody.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and uncle of Jagan Mohan Reddy, was murdered at his residence in Pulivendula on March 15, 2019, a few days before the elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The Supreme Court transferred the case to Hyderabad in November last year after Suneetha Reddy raised doubts about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh.

With the Supreme Court setting April 30 as the deadline for the CBI to complete its investigation, the agency has expedited the probe with the arrest of Bhaskar Reddy and Uday Kumar Reddy and questioning of Avinash Reddy.

  • ‘2nd largest Muslim population..’: Sitharaman denies violence against minorities

‘2nd largest Muslim population..’: Sitharaman denies violence against minorities

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday slammed the reports appearing in Western media about violence against minorities in India, especially Muslims, saying that those commenting on such issues should come and see the reality on the ground as India has the second largest Muslim population in the world and the minorities are not only growing exponentially, they have been incentivised and doing their business in the country.

In an interaction with Adam Posen of the Peterson Institute of International Economics in Washington DC, during her ongoing tour of the US, the finance minister gave Pakistan’s example, saying that it was created as an Islamic country which had promised to treat minorities equally, however there the minorities and even several Muslim sects, which don’t agree with the majority community, have been “decimated and diminished in numbers”.

“In sharp contrast, minorities in India have only grown in numbers since 1947 and have been doing their businesses comfortably…They have been getting scholarships. India has the second largest Muslim population in the world. The answer also lies in the fact that investors have been coming to India. I will say that please come and see for yourself the reality, rather than listening to those who haven’t even seen what is happening on the ground,” she said during the interaction, which focussed on “resilience of the Indian economy amid tightening of Indian conditions”.

    MS Education Academy

She was responding to a question by Posen on violence against Muslims in India as reported by Western media and also opposition MPs losing their status (referring to Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Parliament).

Meanwhile on the Indian economy’s resilience, the finance minister said that “it is due to the enterprising nature of Indians. Despite suffering and loss of lives, we took up Covid-19 as a challenge and helped each other. The government extended support to people through targeted approach and undertook humanitarian steps.”

Speaking on supply chain disruptions, the finance minister said, “Given the shocks witnessed due to supply chain disruptions, MNCs have become prudent and are diversifying. India is poised for a more important role in the global value chains. India is attractive because of its skilled youth and large domestic market.”

Highlighting India’s future goals, Sitharaman said, “Today, we are reaching saturation in providing basic facilities to citizens such as houses, electricity, transport, etc., and are empowering them. Emphasis is there on financial inclusion so that all have bank accounts and benefits reach them directly. Going forward, we are focusing on skilling and digitisation so that there’s greater ease of living, transparency and formalisation of the economy.”

On emerging markets and G20, she noted that India is carrying forward agendas of earlier G20 Presidencies, bringing issues on table that India considers important and also making way for the future G20 Presidencies to build upon the legacy of India’s G20 Presidency.

“Emerging Markets have G20 Presidencies for three consecutive terms from Indonesia in 2022, India in 2023 and Brazil next year. This will bring views of the Emerging Markets to the front and also the voice of the Global South on to the G20 table,” Sitharaman added.AA

She further said that the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) are also holding a roundtable on Global Sovereign Debt.

“Initial discussions happened at the first G20 FMCBG in Bengaluru. India’s G20 presidency will create discussion and sharing of information on this issue and it will be taken forward positively,” the finance minister added.

On the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Sitharaman added that it should be more open about issues.

“WTO has to be progressive and fair to all members. It has to give voice to all and not just hear but also heed. There’s a continuation of a moratorium since 1998 on electronic transmissions despite evolution to the digital age. Shouldn’t there be a change in WTO policy in terms of a moratorium? We don’t have to reverse the benefits of globalisation but make it more transparent,” she emphasised.
