Twitter introduces 10K character long tweets amid fight with Substack

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Before deleting all legacy Blue tick marks on April 20, Twitter on Friday introduced a feature that allows posts with 10,000 characters for paid Blue subscribers.

Twitter now supports tweets up to 10,000 characters in length, “with bold and italic text formatting,” the company informed.

In February, the micro-blogging platform introduced 4,000-character-long tweets for Blue subscribers.

    MS Education Academy

“Sign up for Twitter Blue to access these new features, and apply to enable Subscriptions on your account to earn income directly on Twitter. Tap on ‘Monetization’ in settings,” said the Elon Musk-run company.

Musk on Thursday announced that ‘Subscriptions’ are now enabled on the platform — a way for people’s most engaged followers to help them earn money from Twitter for their contributions on the platform.

“We’re firing up creator subscriptions bigtime! Works for longform text, pics or video,” Musk posted.

The decision to introduce 10,000-character-long tweets comes as Twitter is embroiled in a fight with popular subscription newsletter platform Substack.

Substack hit back at Twitter for blocking the ability to like or retweet any posts containing the word ‘Substack’, saying the whole situation is “very frustrating.”

The company CEO Chris Best responded to Musk with a post on Substack Notes, saying Substack links have been obviously severely throttled on Twitter.

The Twitter move has become a huge problem for Substack writers, who use the Musk-run platform to promote their newsletters.

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Administration has nearly completed the appointment of 10,000 educated and young individuals from different villages across the Union Territory as Lumbedars and Village Guards (Chowkidars). This reformative measure, which began a few months ago, aims to strengthen the grassroots level of governance in the region.

The information was revealed during a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta, and attended by various officials including the DG, CID; Commissioner Secretary GAD; Commissioner Secretary IT & Information; Divisional Commissioners; Secretary PD&MD; Secretary, Revenue, and all Deputy Commissioners of the UT, either physically or virtually.

Dr Mehta commended both the Divisional and District Administration for achieving this feat in record time. He emphasized the need to provide training to these young individuals to sensitize them about their important role as frontline workers who must work for the welfare and well-being of their villages.

He urged authorities to ensure that these workers are given due respect and recognition as they will act as a bridge between the common masses and higher authorities. He advised the creation of a WhatsApp group for these workers to enable continuous communication between them and the District and Divisional Administration.

Dr Mehta noted that as these workers are educated and have a good reputation in their villages, their services will be authentic, genuine, and seamless with respect to ground level verification about the implementation of different welfare programs. He emphasized their role in reporting malpractices such as encroachment of state land and other incidents of laxity or unprofessional conduct on the part of government officials in their respective villages. Their reporting will be vital in taking action against the delinquents.

The Chief Secretary highlighted that these workers’ role during accidents and disasters in their areas would provide the Administration with instant information for early intervention and rescue operations. He also noted that they would act as a link between people and the administration to raise genuine grievances before the authorities for timely redressal.

The meeting revealed that there are 7,056 sanctioned posts of Lumbedars and 2,718 posts of Chowkidars in the UT. Out of these, 2,220 previously appointed Lumbedars and 1,165 Chowkidars were found eligible to continue working after verifying their character and antecedents. The process was initiated to replace the 4,832 Lumbedars and 1,553 Chowkidars who were found worth replacing as per the rules in vogue. All candidates, including the old continuing ones, were selected based on merit and their character and antecedents were verified by concerned authorities.

The meeting also discussed revamping the role and responsibilities of these workers as per the requirements of modern times. This will bring a change in the administration, transforming it towards a more responsive, responsible, transparent, and accountable entity in discharging its day-to-day affairs.(KNO)

Meta CEO fires 10K more employees, shuts 5K additional open roles

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday announced to sack an additional 10,000 employees via several job cut rounds in the coming months.

In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg said overall, “we expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven’t yet hired” in the company’s “year of efficiency”.

In a separate filing with the US SEC, Meta said the new job cuts will lower the high end of its expense guidance for the year by $3 billion.

Over the next couple of months, organisation leaders will announce restructuring plans focused on flattening the organisations, cancelling lower priority projects, and reducing hiring rates.

“We will let recruiting team members know tomorrow whether they’re impacted. We expect to announce restructurings and layoffs in our tech groups in late April, and then our business groups in late May,” the Meta CEO said.

In a small number of cases, it may take through the end of the year to complete these changes, he added.

“Our timelines for international teams will also look different, and local leaders will follow up with more details,” said Zuckerberg.

The fresh cuts come just four months after he laid off 11,000 employees, or 13 per cent of the company, in November last year.

Zuckerberg said that after restructuring, Meta plans to lift hiring and transfer freezes in each group.

“Other relevant efficiency timelines include targeting this summer to complete our analysis from our hybrid work year of learning so we can further refine our distributed work model. We also aim to have a steady stream of developer productivity enhancements and process improvements throughout the year,” he added.

In its ‘Year of Efficiency’, Meta will make the organisation flatter by removing multiple layers of management.

“As part of this, we will ask many managers to become individual contributors. We’ll also have individual contributors report into almost every level — not just the bottom — so information flow between people doing the work and management will be faster,” Zuckerberg noted.

San Francisco: Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Monday said that the micro-blogging platform will “soon” extend “longform tweets” to 10,000 characters.

When YouTuberA@ThePrimeagen, who posts videos related to coding, asked Musk, “the dev community and I were wondering if you could add code blocks to tweets?”

Musk replied: “As an attachment? How many chars? We are extending longform tweets to 10k soon.”

Several users expressed their thoughts on Twitter CEO’s post.

While one user said, “You’re a crazy man lmao,” another commented, “!! Wow! That’s really good news. Actual microblogging!”

Last month, the company had announced that Blue subscribers in the US can post long tweets of up to 4,000 characters on the platform.

Only Blue subscribers can post longer tweets, but non-subscribers can read, reply, retweet and quote tweet to them.

Earlier, tweets were limited to only 280 characters, which still applies to non-subscribers.

Meanwhile, Musk had said that the micro-blogging platform is “spinning up subscriptions” so that users can “charge” their followers for specific content.

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is planning to mobilise 10,000 people from each Assembly segment in Greater Hyderabad for its upcoming public meeting on February 17.

Chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao will address the meeting planned at Parade Ground after inaugurating the new Secretariat complex.

BRS working president KT Rama Rao held a preparatory meeting with public representatives from Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts here on Thursday to prepare the party leaders and cadre for the big event.

While reminding that the new Secretariat complex was named after the architect of the Constitution of India Dr BR Ambedkar, KTR suggested the BRS leaders organise special programmes in every constituency on the day of the inauguration, which also remarked the birthday of CM KCR.

  • Being single has a lot going for it, but £10k a year seems too high a price for the privilege | Emma John

Being single has a lot going for it, but £10k a year seems too high a price for the privilege | Emma John

    [ad_1]

Some claim that the first day in the third week of January is the most depressing one in the calendar. This year, Blue Monday arrived with added cruelty – for those of us who happen to be single, at least. A financial services firm chose just that miserable moment to reveal how much more expensive it is to live on your own than in a couple.

If you’re currently alone, and the post-holiday slump already has you feeling down about it, you may want to look away now. According to the brokers Hargreaves Lansdown, the cost of living premium for being single comes in at an average £860 a month, factoring in typical expenses from rent and energy bills to groceries, wifi and TV subscriptions.

That’s a whopping figure in isolation – an additional £10,000 a year in outgoings – and it wounds even deeper when you compare it with what your partnered friends are paying. The average couple spend £991 per person, so if you’re living alone you’re spending nearly twice the amount they are on the exact same goods and services. For those who didn’t choose their solo state, it’s adding impecuniousness to injury.

As a long-term single, I’ve become inured to the injustice of the single supplement – the one that demands I pay extra for eating less breakfast and soiling fewer towels. I scoff at the misleadingly titled “discount” I receive from the council, which taxes me 75% of the married rate for using only 50% of the services (and arguably less, because I’m childless).

Still, I’ve rarely wasted much time wondering how life without a partner affects my finances. That’s not because I’m comfortably cushioned by personal wealth (which would be nice) but because I have always assumed these things even out overall. Since I don’t share my worldly goods with another person, I have never watched my bank account being depleted by someone making purchases I neither want nor need. Nor have I copped the eye-watering expense of raising children or had to stump up the galling legal fees and potentially lifelong financial commitments of a divorce.

There is another reason I’ve resisted contemplating the economic disadvantages of living alone. Women are already conditioned to perceive the unpartnered life as one of lack or absence, if not downright misery. Challenging that Bridget Jones default can be hard work and a poor-me mindset doesn’t help. As someone who always pictured herself married, I have learned the hard way not to fixate on the negatives of singlehood.

Today’s climate of uncertainty, inequality and inflation is making the issue impossible to ignore. Much as I’ve loved Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters, I can’t watch Sharon Horgan’s Eva living alone in an enormous family home without wondering how she affords to heat it. Seeing last week’s figures in stone cold print has finally shaken me out of my state of denial. An extra 10 grand a year? The comparative financial benefits of singledom and coupledom aren’t swings and roundabouts at all, they’re snakes and ladders.

More noteworthy than the vast disparity itself, one that the majority of single people have long intuited, is how we respond to it. Whatever sympathy the news may elicit for ourselves or our single friends is soon followed by a sense of impotence or even outright ambivalence. This isn’t the kind of inequality we feel compelled to challenge or change. Maybe it’s because we see singleness as a temporary status. Or maybe because we can’t shift the suspicion that a solo life is a self-indulgent one.

In the 18th century, social commentators in Britain argued for a tax on bachelors and spinsters, who were considered to contribute nothing concrete to the productivity of the nation. Frances Brooke, writing a series of articles as “Mary Singleton”, proposed that unmarried men over the age of 30 pay a shilling in the pound and unmarried women sixpence. “The very circumstance of having no burden upon their fortunes, but what merely concerns themselves, makes them of all others, the fittest to be assessed extraordinarily,” she wrote, adding that she would herself pay such a due “with the greatest pleasure”.

Living alone is a privilege, but it can also be a burden. In her brilliant book about spinsterhood, She I Dare Not Name, Donna Ward argues that “the crucial conversation to have is about the reality of this life – the social, psychological and financial implications of it and the way legislators, friends, family and neighbours can support those living it”. Most single people are living on one income in a dual-income economy – and one whose lawmakers make the fallacious assumption that they have more disposable income than their coupled counterparts.

The American social psychologist Bella DePaulo has long campaigned for more awareness of the way that society invisibly discriminates against those without partners – expecting more of them in the workplace, for instance, then robbing them through a tax system that prioritises married and family units. Maybe it is time to make a fuss about that single supplement.
