SRINAGAR: The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has recently launched a new “Syllabus cum Academic Calendar” for the upcoming academic session 2023-24. The syllabus is intended for the foundational stage and classes 1 to 8 of the schooling system in Jammu and Kashmir. This comprehensive document was developed in collaboration with experts from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 to improve the quality of education in the region.

The syllabus aims to shift the focus from rote learning to competency and experiential-based learning, thereby enhancing the quality of education. The syllabus is aligned with the latest guidelines and instruction manuals issued by NCERT, New Delhi, and maps the learning outcomes with the contents of the prescribed textbooks of J&K Board of School Education.

The syllabus also emphasizes the importance of inclusive education and provides teachers with the knowledge and skills to create an inclusive classroom environment. Additionally, it provides resources such as tactile diagrams/maps, talking books, audio-visual materials, Braille, etc., to support children with special needs.

The document is available in parts on the website of the SCERT for easy access by teachers, students, and parents. With the launch of this new syllabus, Jammu and Kashmir has become the first Union Territory to create such a comprehensive document, outpacing all other states and union territories in the country. It is expected that this new syllabus will enhance the quality of education in Jammu and Kashmir and help students develop the skills and competencies needed for success in the 21st century.
