J&K Waqf Board property damaged in massive fire in Srinagar

    [ad_1]

At least seven residential houses including a ‘U-shaped’ shopping complex were damaged after a massive fire broke out in a multi-storeyed shopping complex opposite Sir Syed Gate of the University of Kashmir in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar on Monday.

According to the reports several structures damaged in the incident belong to the J&K Waqf Board’s property.

Dr Darakshan Andrab, Chairperson of the J&K Waqf Board, told that she will evaluate the veracity of these claims. “I will visit the site in a while to assess things,” she was quoted by Global News Service (GNS).

    MS Education Academy

According to GNS, a fire broke out inside a shop and soon spread to adjacent outlets as well as residential houses.

Confirming it, a Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) department official told GNS that it took them several hours to contain the fire.

The official rued the uncalled attitude of motorists who blocked the road despite sirens made by fire tenders to pave the side for their movement.

At least seven residential homes and many shops, including the food outlets Hattrick and Amigos have been reported damaged.

“The fire mainly caused damage to the attic, roofing and ceiling of the structures. Its cause is not yet ascertained. However, a nearby gas cylinder blast triggered the flames further,” the official said.

‘Govt forcing police to deny hunger strike’, YSRTP to knock court doors

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YSR Telangana party on Monday said that it would knock on court doors to get permission for Telangana Students’ Action for Vacancies and Employment’s (T-SAVE) day-long hunger strike at Indira Park, which was refused by the city police earlier.

Addressing the media after the political affairs committee meeting, YSRTP official spokesperson Gattu Ramachandra Rao said, “This is completely shocking and a sorry picture where YS Sharmila is repeatedly being targeted because chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao is now scared of her fight and commitment towards Telangana”.

The YSRTP spokesperson said that the CM KCR’s treatment of those who raised their voices against his failures and fake promises was atrocious and dictatorial. Rao claimed that the state government is forcing the Hyderabad police to refuse permission to a T-SAVE hunger strike.

    MS Education Academy

He said that the party is tirelessly fighting for the cause and the rights of the unemployed. “Not only is the state government silent and arrogant, but they are also depriving us of our right to fight and protest,” alleged Rao.

He said that it is shameful that a democratic setup does not let the partymen enter their own party office.

“T-SAVE was proposed as a common platform and we had decided to conduct a hunger strike, for a day near Indira Park. This plea was rejected by the city police. Is this fair on KCR who owes his party’s emergence and existence to public movements and people’s protests?” he added.

“Didn’t KCR also conduct protests at Indira Park? Why different rules for Bharat Sashtra Samithi (BRS) and other parties?” added Ramachandra Rao.

He said that the YSRTP will approach the court to obtain permission to conduct the day-long hunger strike. “We have the support of 39 social organisations and other political parties as well. When BRS can carry out dharnas in Delhi, why does it pose obstacles for other parties in Telangana? Isn’t it because they are scared?” said the party spokesperson.

The hunger strike was announced at T-SAVE’s inaugural roundtable meeting on April 10. YSRTP leader Sharmila had announced that her party will stage a hunger strike for a day at Indira Park to “bring this government to task” and put pressure and force it to deliver justice to the youth.

The official said the transfer was done on administrative grounds.

The assailants — Mohit alias Sunny (23) of Hamirpur, Lavlesh Tiwari (22) of Banda and Arun Maurya (18) of Kasganj — were arrested soon after the dramatic shootout outside the Prayagraj hospital where policemen were escorting the brothers for a medical check-up Saturday night.

  • Macron doubles down on French ‘independence’ amid pension reform crisis

Macron doubles down on French ‘independence’ amid pension reform crisis

    [ad_1]

    france macron speaks 53659

PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron drew a connection between his country’s pension reform and Europe’s independence from other countries, during a televised address Monday evening.

“We are a people who intend to control and choose our destiny, who do not want to depend on anyone, neither on the forces of speculation, nor on foreign powers, nor on wills other than our own, and we are right,” Macron said during the 15-minute speech.

The French head of state’s TV appearance was the first time he has addressed the nation since he signed his contentious pension reform — which raises the retirement age from 62 to 64 — into law amid a prolonged political and social crisis.

The president’s reference to independence from “foreign powers” echoed controversial comments he made earlier this month in an interview with POLITICO and French daily Les Echos. On his way back from China, the French president created a stir by saying Europe should avoid being the United States’ follower — including on the matter of Taiwan’s security.

“One cannot declare its independence: It is built through ambitions, efforts at the national and European level, in terms of knowledge, research, attractiveness, technology, industry, defense. And it is also financed collectively through work,” Macron said Monday.

European and French independence, he added, is what will “allow us to obtain more justice” and decrease inequalities.

The bill was greenlit by the country’s top constitutional court on Friday, crushing hopes of opposition parties and unions that the reform could still be stopped.

The French president, who faces the prospect of a gridlocked parliament, said his government would focus on labor, law and justice, and “progress” in the coming months, with Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne expected to present a more detailed roadmap next week.

  • Angela Merkel receives Germany’s highest honor

Angela Merkel receives Germany’s highest honor

    [ad_1]

    germany merkel 60858

BERLIN — Former Chancellor Angela Merkel received Germany’s highest federal decoration on Monday, an honor bestowed on only two other former leaders before her, though some within her own party questioned whether her legacy matches up.

Merkel, who led the country for over 16 years as one of its longest-serving chancellors, received the top Grand Cross of the Order of Merit for special achievement from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, her former vice chancellor and foreign minister.

Steinmeier praised Merkel as an “unprecedented politician” who successfully steered Germany through difficult times, including the 2008 financial meltdown and the 2015 refugee crisis.

“You have helped our country achieve economic success anew under unprecedented challenges. We look back on 16 years of almost uninterrupted economic growth, during which the scourge of unemployment increasingly lost its horror for most Germans,” Steinmeier said. “At a time when our continent threatened to break apart, you held together the center and the periphery, the north and the south, the east and the west.”

While Steinmeier spoke for half an hour, Merkel kept her acceptance speech to a much shorter 5 minutes.

“I just want to say thank you for having me here today because it has something to do with your decision,” Merkel told Steinmeier. “In that sense, the people who are being introduced now represent not just tonight, but they represent that a whole lot of people are part of being chancellor for 16 years,” she added.

“People often talk about what a snake pit politics is. I may say I wouldn’t have survived it if there wasn’t the other side of politics. And that’s why I’ve always been able to enjoy it.”

The two other chancellors who received this honor were Konrad Adenauer, West Germany’s first post-war chancellor, and Helmut Kohl, who oversaw the end of the Cold War, as well as German reunification and the creation of the European Union.

Some within Merkel’s center-right CDU/CSU political family took issue with Merkel joining the ranks of the two fellow Christian Democrats so soon after her leadership ended in December 2021, especially amid Russia’s war in Ukraine, which some have blamed in part on her soft approach toward Moscow.

“I think it’s a mistake to award Angela Merkel this Grand Cross now, a year and a half after the end of her term,” Andreas Rödder, head of the CDU’s so-called Fundamental Values Commission, told broadcaster ZDF. He added that Merkel’s stance toward Russia has been called one of the country’s worst foreign policy mistakes, and also criticized her energy, migration and nuclear phase-out policies.

Wolfgang Schäuble, Merkel’s longtime finance minister and ally in the CDU, also previously told the Handelsblatt newspaper that it was too early to make a final assessment of whether Merkel should be ranked among the “great” chancellors.

Still, others defended Merkel, including Peter Altmaier, her former chief of staff and later economy minister. Altmaier told broadcaster RTL that “I was pleased to see Angela Merkel receive the award because she has worked with all her might in German politics over the past 30 years,” adding that “whoever does politics also makes mistakes.”

Monday’s ceremony had a small audience of about 20 guests, including Merkel’s successor Olaf Scholz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who each held Cabinet positions under Merkel. As Stern magazine first reported, no one from the current CDU leadership, including party leader Friedrich Merz, nor from the CSU or liberal FDP had been invited.

‘Shocking’: Putin critic handed 25 years in prison

    [ad_1]

    russia putin 65259

MOSCOW — A Russian court on Monday slapped opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza with 25 years in prison for treason and other claimed offenses.

Moscow City Court sentenced Kara-Murza to a penal colony for spreading “fake news” about the army and “cooperation with an undesirable organization,” as Russian President Vladimir Putin steps up his crackdown on dissent and Russian civil society. But the bulk of his sentence had to do with another, third charge: treason, in the first time anyone has been convicted on that count for making public statements containing publicly available information.

On the courthouse steps, British Ambassador Deborah Bronnert called the sentence for Kara-Murza, who holds both Russian and British citizenship, “shocking.” Her U.S. counterpart said the verdict was an attempt “to silence dissent in this country.”

The U.K. summoned the Russian ambassador after the conviction, with Foreign Secretary James Cleverly calling for Kara-Murza’s “immediate release.”

Upon traveling to Russia in April 2022, Kara-Murza was detained for disobeying police orders. From that moment the charges piled up: first for spreading “fake news” about the Russian armed forces, then for his participation in an “undesirable organization,” and last for treason, on account of three public speeches he gave in the U.S., Finland and Portugal. The charges, all of which Kara-Murza denies, were expanded to treason last October.

A close associate of the late opposition figure Boris Nemtsov, who was assassinated near the Kremlin in 2015, Kara-Murza was one of the last remaining prominent Putin critics still alive and walking free. But over the years he has ruffled many feathers as a main advocate for the Magnitsky Act, which long before the war called upon countries to target Russians involved in human rights violations and corruption.

The defense’s attempts to remove the judge — who is also on the Magnitsky list — were dismissed.

Kara-Murza continued to speak out against the Kremlin despite mounting personal risks, including what he described as poisonings by the Russian security services in 2015 and 2017, where he suddenly became ill, falling into a coma before eventually recovering.

Neither journalists nor high-ranking diplomats were allowed into the courtroom to witness the ruling and instead followed the sentencing on a screen.

Kara-Murza was in a glass cage, dressed in jeans and a gray blazer, with his mother and his lawyer standing outside of the cage. He smiled when the sentence was read out.

After the verdict Oleg Orlov, the co-chair of Russia’s oldest human rights group, Memorial, who himself is facing charges for “discrediting the Russian army,” drew a parallel with the Soviet Union, when “people were also jailed for words.” Kara-Murza compared the legal process to Stalin-era trials, in his appearance at court.

Kara-Murza’s lawyer Maria Eismont said the sentence was “a boost to his self esteem, the highest grade he could have gotten for his work as a politician and active citizen,” but added that there were serious concerns about his health.
