Karnataka polls: Family members of leaders in BJP’s 3rd list, resentment still brews

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The BJP on Monday released a third list of candidates for the May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls, accommodating the family members of three senior leaders amid the resentment and rebellion in the state unit.

However, senior leader S.A. Ramdas, miffed with the denial of ticket from Krishnaraja constituency in Mysuru city, stated that he will announce his decision on future course of action on Tuesday.

The BJP has announced candidates for 10 constituencies, thus finalising 222 candidates of the total 224. The party is yet to announce candidates for Shivamogga constituency represented by former minister K.S. Eshwarappa and Manvi constituency.

The party has announced state General Secretary Mahesh Tenginakayi as its candidate for Hubballi-Dharwad Central constituency represented by former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, who had joined the Congress after being denied a ticket by the BJP.

The party has allotted ticket to senior leader Karadi Sanganna’s daughter-in-law Manjula Amaresh for Koppal constituency, former minister Arvind Limbavali’s wife Manjula Arvind Limbavali from Mahadevapura reserve constituency in Bengaluru, and Katta Jagadish, son of senior leader Katta Subramanya Naidu, from Hebbal constituency in Bengaluru.

The party has chosen Srivatsa, its Mysuru district President from Krishnaraja constituency in Mysuru instead of senior leader Ramdas, who did hectic lobbying and is now irate.

Israel voices ‘concern’ over conflict in Sudan

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israel has said it was “following with concern” the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan.

“Israel wants stability and security for Sudan,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lior Haiat wrote on Twitter, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Israel calls on all parties to refrain from violence and to return to the path of internal reconciliation, in order to conclude the process of governmental transition with a large consensus,” the spokesman wrote.

    MS Education Academy

The armed clashes that erupted in Khartoum on Saturday left at least 97 people dead and hundreds of others injured.

The conflict is expected to postpone the signing of a deal to normalize ties between Israel and Sudan, which is expected to take place after the transfer of power in Sudan to a civilian government, according to commentators on state-owned Kan TV news.

Sudan first agreed to normalise ties with Israel in 2020. After paying a visit to Sudanese capital of Khartoum in February, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said the final normalization deal is expected to be signed by the end of 2023.

  • NIA takes over probe into attack on Indian mission in London

NIA takes over probe into attack on Indian mission in London

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Nearly a month after the national flag at the Indian high commission in London was pulled down during a protest by pro-Khalistan activists, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case to investigate the matter, sources said.

According to inputs, the case was handed over to the NIA by the Counter Terrorism and Counter Radicalization (CTCR) division of the Ministry of Home Affairs a few days back.

The anti-terror agency registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on the orders of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and began its probe.

    MS Education Academy

The agency took over the case from Delhi Police, which registered an FIR in the matter under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and is currently investigating it.

The MHA took the decision to hand over the case to the NIA following a meeting with UK representatives last week, the sources indicated.

It is learnt that a special team of the NIA, including a Deputy Inspector General rank officer, may visit London “very soon”, said a source privy to the development.

A tricolour flying atop the Indian High Commission in London was grabbed at by a group of protesters waving separatist Khalistani flags and chanting pro-Khalistani slogans on March 19.

The national flag was pulled down during the protest by pro-Khalistani elements. Videos of the incident showed several protesters carrying the yellow and black Khalistan flag and calling for radical Sikh preacher and Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh to be “freed”.

The videos showed one of the protesters clambering onto a balcony and pulling down the Indian flag from a pole at the front of the high commission to cheers from the other men. British policemen arrived on the scene and prevented the protestors from approaching an entrance of the Indian high commission. The protesters shouted slogans and abused Indian officials within, the videos showed.

Centre amended the NIA Act in August 2019, empowering the agency to investigate terror activities against Indians and Indian interests abroad apart from cyber crimes and human trafficking.

In the fifth India-UK Home Affairs Dialogue held on April 12, India raised concerns on the misuse of the UK’s asylum status by the Pro-Khalistani elements aid and abet terrorist activities here and requested better cooperation with the UK and increased monitoring of UK based Pro-Khalistan Extremists and take appropriate proactive action.

India also pointed out its concerns over the breach of security of the Indian High Commission.

Both sides reviewed the ongoing cooperation and identified further steps that can be taken to explore opportunities and synergies in advancing cooperation in counter-terrorism, cyber security and global supply chains, drug trafficking, migration, extradition, and anti-India activities in the UK including Pro-Khalistan Extremism among other issues.

The Indian delegation was led by Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the UK delegation was led by Permanent Secretary, of Home Office, Sir Matthew Rycroft. The meeting was also attended by other senior officials of both countries.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) last month summoned the UK deputy high commissioner after pro-Khalistan protestors took down the Indian flag at the high commission in London. The pro-Khalistan groups were protesting against the Punjab police’s crackdown on Sikh hardliner Amritpal Singh.

WHO urges vigilance in Europe over mpox

    [ad_1]

Copenhagen: Nearly a year after the mpox (monkeypox) outbreak in the European region of the World Health Organization (WHO), the agency has urged vigilance in Europe over mpox ahead of the festival season.

A new campaign is launched as Europe heads into the spring and summer months when a number of Pride festivals are set to take place across towns and cities, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a press release issued by the WHO Regional Office for Europe.

The aim of the campaign is to reinforce the message that “monkeypox remains with us and that continued vigilance is still needed”.

    MS Education Academy

The “Ready for It” campaign was launched despite a significant decrease in the number of mpox cases in recent months, due to WHO Europe concerns that “the possibility of further re-introductions from outside the region, either from endemic areas or newly affected countries, is likely”.

The campaign urges the most vulnerable groups and the sexually active who will attend the events and festivals across Europe this spring and summer “to be aware of the symptoms of mpox, to get tested, and to abstain from sexual activity if they develop symptoms.”

To support the campaign’s message, WHO Europe is planning to release a catalogue of resources on mpox mass gathering and large event preparedness, including updated guidance and information for authorities and event organizers in preparation for this year’s festival season.

According to WHO Europe, the campaign will coincide with the publication of a new mpox strategy, which outlines the steps that member states in the region must take to prepare for the spring and summer seasons, as well as the medium to long-term measures necessary to stop the sustained transmission of mpox from person to person.

An atypical outbreak of mpox was declared in May 2022 in the WHO European region. Patients, mainly men who have sex with men, were identified in sexual health clinics, but anyone can catch mpox through close contact, according to the WHO.

  • Biden DOJ wins transfer of lawsuit challenging student loan rule away from conservative Texas court

Biden DOJ wins transfer of lawsuit challenging student loan rule away from conservative Texas court

    [ad_1]

Critics have accused conservative opponents of Biden policies of filing their lawsuits in particular divisions in the district, seeking to guarantee they’re heard by a sympathetic judge. The Biden administration, for example, has accused Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton of “judge shopping” in recent cases he’s filed in the district challenging various administration policies.

The lawsuit that Pittman agreed to transfer on Monday was brought by a for-profit college trade association that wants to block a new Biden administration policy that makes it easier for student loan borrowers to have their debts forgiven when they are misled or defrauded by their college.

Career Colleges & Schools of Texas, which filed the case in February, is trying to block the Education Department’s rewrite of federal standards — known as “borrower defense to repayment” — that govern when the agency discharges a student loan based on a college’s misconduct. The group argues that the policy, which is set to take effect July 1, is an illegal and unfair effort by the Biden administration to provide more loan forgiveness to borrowers while sticking colleges with the bill.

In a six-page decision, Pittman rejected arguments by the Austin-based association that it should be able to pursue the case in the Fort Worth division of the Northern District of Texas on behalf of member schools in that area that would be affected by the new policy even though the group itself doesn’t have any office or employees there.

Pittman ruled that connection to the district was too far removed. Career Colleges & Schools of Texas “may have an interest in assisting various burdened parties in the division, but it does not have any presence,” Pittman wrote, concluding that “venue is improper” in his district.

The Biden administration had asked that the case be moved either to Austin where the college group is based or federal district court in Washington, D.C. Pittman ruled that Austin would be the “more appropriate” venue because it still “affords some ‘respect’ to Plaintiff’s original choice of forum — even though it was an incorrect one.”

The Justice Department declined to comment. An attorney representing Career Colleges & Schools of Texas said that the organization would not comment on pending litigation.

The Northern District of Texas is widely seen a one of the nation’s most conservative with GOP appointed judges who have demonstrated a willingness to strike down major Democratic policies.

Pittman, for example, was the judge who first blocked Biden’s sweeping student debt relief program last fall. His colleague Judge Reed O’Connor is a George W. Bush appointee who notably struck down the Affordable Care Act in 2018.

More recently, another judge in the district, Matthew Kacsmaryk, a Trump appointee, authored the controversial ruling earlier this month that overturned the Food and Drug Administration’s decades-old approval of a common abortion pill. That decision is on pause while the Supreme Court hears an emergency appeal.

Josh Gerstein contributed to this report.

Atiq murder case accused have no connection with VHP or Bajrang Dal: Alok Kumar

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday said none of the three accused arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police for killing gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf has any link with it or its youth wing, Bajrang Dal.

Dismissing allegations regarding the Bajrang Dal’s involvement in the killing of Ahmad, a former Samajwadi Party (SP) MP, and Ashraf, VHP working president Alok Kumar said his organisation and the Bajrang Dal work “under the framework of laws and the Constitution”.

“We have enquired properly. None of the three accused has any connection with the Vishva Hindu Parishad or the Bajrang Dal. What is being spread is false,” Kumar said when asked about the allegations.

“Taking law in our own hands has never been our thought. We are confident that the truth will come out during the investigation,” he added.

Ahmad (60) and Ashraf were shot dead at almost point-blank range by three men posing as journalists on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj for a checkup.

  • Brace for debt-limit whiplash. The ‘when’ gets risky for a split Congress.

Brace for debt-limit whiplash. The ‘when’ gets risky for a split Congress.

    [ad_1]

    hp debt ceiling

After the U.S. technically reached the $31.4 trillion debt limit in late January, the Treasury Department started taking “extraordinary measures” to keep the country from defaulting. That wonky process, which involves accounting maneuvers that reduce certain types of government debt, gave the nation a borrowing cushion of about $800 billion at the beginning of February.

But the government has many bills to pay, including sending out money to support Medicare providers, veterans benefits, Social Security checks and assistance to state and local governments.

Federal taxes come due in April, sending billions into government coffers and ensuring the country is safe from default through most of the spring. The day when the country can no longer meet its financial obligations, known as the X-date, is heavily dependent on whether those tax receipts meet, exceed or fall short of expectations.

Predicting how much cash the government will bring in during tax season is always difficult. Last year, for example, estimates from Congress’ nonpartisan budget office lowballed by about $500 billion what turned out to be record-setting revenue. This year, a difference of a few hundred billion dollars could buy — or cost — the country several months of leeway.

By late spring, the pendulum typically shifts to the spending column. If tax revenue comes in low, the nation could come extremely close to defaulting. If tax season is particularly fruitful, the extra money could keep the U.S. from defaulting until late summer or early fall — and likely keep markets rosy in the meantime.

On June 15, quarterly tax payments are due, an influx that could help buoy the nation’s cash through July. While that revenue bump is smaller than the regular tax season, quarterly payments usually bring in tens of billions of dollars as corporations, self-employed people and some other taxpayers hand over their estimated dues.

On June 30, the Treasury Department is allowed to extract about $140 billion in borrowing power from a key federal retirement fund. The accounting maneuver doesn’t affect any workers’ savings or prevent any retirees from getting their cash.

The federal government tends to run a deficit in late summer. And, by all estimates, the U.S. is most likely to reach the brink of default in August or September.

That’s an unfortunate timeframe for Congress’ 535 lawmakers, who want to escape Capitol Hill for their scheduled August recess but also historically seem incapable of reaching a bipartisan deal well in advance of a hard deadline.

More quarterly tax payments roll in on Sept. 15. If the U.S. hasn’t run out of borrowing power by then — and if Congress still hasn’t raised the debt limit or passed a short-term patch — that mid-September revenue bump will add billions of dollars to whatever borrowing authority the country has left.

With no substantial revenue coming in during October, available cash will wane quickly at this point, if it even lasts that long.

The timeline is uncertain, highly subject to the whims of federal cash flow. Despite those dangers, congressional leaders and the White House are virtually nowhere in their discussions to lift the borrowing cap.

Yarl was released from the hospital Sunday and has since been recovering at home.

The White House said Biden “shared his hope for a swift recovery.”

Attorneys for Yarl’s family, Ben Crump and Lee Merritt, said Biden called Yarl and his family shortly before they learned of the charges being brought against Lester. The president “offered his prayers for Ralph’s health and for justice,” they said in a statement Monday evening.

“Gun violence against unarmed Black individuals must stop,” the lawyers said. “Our children should feel safe, not as though they are being hunted. While this is certainly a step in the right direction, we will continue to fight for Ralph while he works toward a full recovery.”

Vice President Kamala Harris voiced outrage over the shooting.

“Doug and I are praying for Ralph Yarl and his family as he fights for his life,” Harris wrote on Twitter on Monday. “Let’s be clear: No child should ever live in fear of being shot for ringing the wrong doorbell. Every child deserves to be safe. That’s the America we are fighting for.”
