Apple unveils Apple Card’s savings accounts with 4.15% interest rate

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Apple has launched a new high-yield savings account for Apple Card users that will come with a 4.15 annual percentage yield (APY).

Apple Card users can now choose to grow their Daily Cash rewards by automatically depositing their Daily Cash into a high-yield Savings account from Goldman Sachs.

“Starting today, Apple Card users can choose to grow their Daily Cash rewards with a Savings account from Goldman Sachs, which offers a high-yield APY of 4.15 per cent — a rate that’s more than 10 times the national average,” said the company.

    MS Education Academy

With no fees, no minimum deposits, and no minimum balance requirements, users can easily set up and manage their Savings account directly from Apple Card in Wallet.

“Savings helps our users get even more value out of their favorite Apple Card benefit ‘Daily Cash’ while providing them with an easy way to save money every day,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.

“Our goal is to build tools that help users lead healthier financial lives, and building Savings into Apple Card in Wallet enables them to spend, send, and save Daily Cash directly and seamlessly ‘all from one place’,” Bailey added.

Once a Savings account is set up, all future Daily Cash earned by the user will be automatically deposited into the account.

To build on their savings even further, users can deposit additional funds into their Savings account through a linked bank account, or from their Apple Cash balance.

“Users will also have access to an easy-to-use Savings dashboard in Wallet, where they can conveniently track their account balance and interest earned over time,” Apple said late on Monday.

Users can also withdraw funds at any time through the Savings dashboard by transferring them to a linked bank account or to their Apple Cash card, with no fees.

  • Anti-CAA stir: SC grants bail to Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi

Anti-CAA stir: SC grants bail to Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to independent Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi in connection with a case related to anti-CAA protests and suspected Maoist links.

A bench of Justices V Ramasubramanian and Pankaj Mithal, however, affirmed a Gauhati High Court order which had set aside Gogoi’s discharge in the case.

The lawmaker, who has allegedly been vocal against the Central government during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests, had moved the top court against the February 9 order of the high court allowing the special NIA court in Assam to proceed with the framing of charges against him in one of the two cases.

    MS Education Academy

Earlier, the high court had permitted the NIA to seek framing of charges in the special court against Gogoi and three of his associates in connection with anti-CAA protests and suspected Maoist links.

The high court’s order had come on an appeal of the NIA challenging the order of a special NIA court giving clean chit to the four.

A high court division bench comprising Justices Suman Shyam and Malasri Nandi had asked the agency to go ahead with framing charges after reopening the case.

The MLA has come to the apex court against the order.

The other three accused were Dhaijya Konwar, Bittu Sonowal and Manash Konwar, all of whom got bail in the NIA case and were released from jail.

Gogoi was the only one whose bail was rejected by the court and he was released after spending 567 days in jail once Special NIA Judge Pranjal Das cleared him along with the three others of all charges.

The NIA is investigating two cases against Gogoi related to anti-CAA protests. In one of those, the special NIA court had granted him bail, which was upheld by the Gauhati High Court too in April 2021 after the probe agency challenged it.

The RTI activist continued to be in judicial custody as he was rejected bail in the second case related to anti-CAA violence and was being investigated by the NIA.

Later, the special NIA court on July 1, 2021 released Gogoi and his three associates for their alleged role in the violent anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act stir in the state in December 2019 and observed there was nothing to indicate that the “talk of blockade” threatened the country’s economic security or was “a terrorist act.”

The NIA then moved the Gauhati High Court appealing it to allow the agency to frame charges under various sections, including sedition, of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

SC approves hearing petition to probe Atiq Ahmed killing

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a plea seeking a probe into the killings of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf.

The plea sought a direction for setting up of an expert committee headed by a former apex court judge to investigate the killings. The case will be listed for hearing on April 24.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari moved the apex court seeking an independent expert committee and also sought an inquiry into the 183 encounters that have taken place in Uttar Pradesh since 2017.

    MS Education Academy

Ahmad and his brother were shot dead by three assailants, posing as journalists, while they were being escorted by police personnel to a medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj for a check up on Saturday night.

The plea sought guidelines to safeguard the rule of law by constituting an independent expert committee under the chairmanship of a former Supreme Court judge and also to inquire into the 183 encounters which had occurred since 2017 as stated by Uttar Pradesh Special Director General of Police (Law and Order).

The petitioner also sought a probe into the murder of Ahmad and his brother under police custody and stressed that “such actions by police are a severe threat to democracy and rule of law and lead to police state”.

The plea said extra judicial killings or fake police encounters do not have a place under the law and further argued that in a democratic society the police cannot be allowed to become a mode of delivering final justice, as the power of punishment is only vested in the judiciary.

  • Pension scheme in India: A timeline

Pension scheme in India: A timeline

    [ad_1]

    OU Nizam
    Dr. Dhrubash Karan Mathur

It is an established fact that the Central Government has been paying 50 percent of the last pay drawn, after fulfilling required conditions, as pension to their employees who retire from service on attaining the age of superannuation before 1st April 2004. It was at the age of 55 years, gradually raised to 58 years, extending to 60 or 62 years in specific cadres by Central / State Governments. At the same time, it was felt that in the long run, the existing pension structure was highly disadvantageous to pensioners as the pension for them was not revised as and when the pay scales for in service Government employees were revised. Keeping in mind the fact that money has been reducing its value very fast year after year with the addition of old age problems of senior citizens, a frequent upward revision of pension was essential and inescapable.

Not caring for pensioners’ requests/ demands for revision of their pension the Government deliberately omitted it in the terms of reference of I, II and III Central Pay Commission (CPC). Not finding any positive response from the Government a bold step for justice was taken by one NAKARA after he retired as Financial Advisor to the Ministry Of Defence. He filed a writ petition in Supreme Court (SC) for revision of pension and payment from retrospective effect. The Government of India (GOI) was compelled to ask IV CPC to take up the problems related to CG retirees also with its terms of reference.

The landmark judgement delivered by the Constitution Bench of SC, headed by the then Chief Justice (CJ) Y.V.Chandrachud on 17th December 1982 is the beginning of the evolution of pension structure for the past pensioners and in the history of pensioners movement. It gave the pensioners a new lease of life. In the judgement the SC has affirmed that:

    MS Education Academy

“State’s obligation to provide security in old age, as an escape from undeserved want, is recognised. As a first step, pension is treated not only as a reward for past services but with a view of helping the employee to avoid destitution in old age. The QUID PRO QUO was that when the employee was physically and mentally alert, he rendered the best unto the master expecting the master to look after him in the evening of his life. A pension on retirement therefore exists solely for the purpose of providing benefits. Pension is not the nature of alms being doled to beggars. Pension is therefore deferred wages. Pension is their statutory, inalienable and legally enforceable right and it has been earned by the sweat of their brow. The senior citizens need to be treated with dignity and courtesy befitting their age.”

The court, therefore, held that pension is not a bounty nor a matter of grace depending upon the sweet will of the employer. It is not an ex-gratia payment, but a payment for past services rendered. It is a social welfare measure , rendering socio economic justice to those who in the heydays of their life, ceaselessly toiled for their employers on an assurance that in their old age , they would not be left in lurch, The court finally decided in favour of pensioners dictating the following. “A pension scheme consistent with available resources should therefore provide pension so that the pensioner should be able to live (i) free from want, with decency, independence and self respect and (ii) at a standard of living equivalent at the pre-retirement level.”

Subsequently, the V CPC constituted in April 1994 with justice Ratnavel Pandian as

    Chairman stressed that:

“Pension is not the nature of alms being doled out to beggars. The senior citizens need to be treated with dignity and courtesy befitting their age. Pension is their statutory, inalienable and legally enforceable right and has been earned by the sweat of their brow. As such it should be fixed, revised, modified and changed in ways, not entirely dissimilar to the salaries granted to the serving employees.”

The sudden twisted decision of the Government to dispense with the pension scheme itself through a bill passed in the Parliament and implemented from 1st April 2004 came as a rude shock to the then newly appointed Government employees. However, the employees appointed earlier that cut off date were not affected and continued to draw pensions under the OLD PENSION SCHEME (OPS) with Government funds. A new pension scheme with 10% contribution of employees’ salaries under the name NEW PENSION SCHEME (NPS) / NATIONAL  PENSION SCHEME  was introduced which was not at all beneficial in any way to employees and much against the observations made by SC and the Chairman of V CPC way back in 1982 and 1994 respectively. Moreover refunding the highly diluted money with some additional benefits is beneficial to pensioners to maintain dignity, a reasonably good standard of living, and independence in the evenings of their lives.

The employees under the NPS have been pleading with the Government to revert back to OPS. While a few State Governments have responded positively, the Central Government seems to be not in its favour because of huge recurring expenditure involved costing heavily the ex- chequer. Consider it as a social welfare scheme to provide socio economic justice to senior citizens who are in the evenings of their life facing old age problems clubbed with ever increasing prices of essentials of daily life.
