BJP awaits PM’s visit to Kerala for major fillip in its outreach to minorities

    [ad_1]

Kottayam: The BJP in Kerala is looking forward to the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the state next week in hopes that it would give an impetus to its campaign aimed at bringing minorities into its fold.

The reason behind the expectation, according to BJP state president K Surendran, is the “flow” of people, especially from minority communities, to join the party.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Surendran said the BJP will begin a massive campaign to bring religious minorities into its embrace with Modi’s visit.

    MS Education Academy

He said the Prime Minister’s trip to Kerala would be a turning point for the party as even before his arrival, people have started flocking to join it.

The BJP leader said around 80 persons from prominent families belonging to minority communities joined the BJP in Kottayam district today.

More are expected to join the saffron party from Pathanamthitta district in the coming days, he added.

“Kottayam was the beginning. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kerala, there will be a huge influx to the BJP from the religious minorities,” he said at the reception held here for the new members who joined the party.

He also said the party has prepared a list of persons whom it wants to invite as members and these are people who are concerned about Kerala’s future.

Earlier in the day, Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs John Barla met Cardinal George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church at his residence.

After the meeting, Barla said in a Facebook post that it was “positive interaction”, where many national issues related to the Christian community were discussed along with the mission and vision of PM Modi.

During the day, he also met with Archbishop Kuriakose Mar Severios at the Knanaya Jacobite Archdiocese at Chingavanam and visited the St Kuriakos Elias Chavara pilgrim centre at Mannanam here.

Meanwhile, Surendran also said rubber rates will see some changes soon.

Recently, a senior Bishop — Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany — of the influential Syro-Malabar Catholic Church had said that if the Centre promised to increase the price of rubber procurement to Rs 300 per kilogram, BJP’s dearth of an MP from the southern state would be addressed.

His statement had created ripples in the political waters of the state.

On Tuesday, Surendran said the central government will take a stand favourable for rubber farmers and alleged that it was the state government which was lying to them.

He urged the ruling Left front to implement what it had said in the poll manifesto regarding rubber pricing and to indicate its stand on the issue of hiking the rubber price to Rs 300 per kg.

    fox dominion lawsuit 02521

“This is the dream case for any trial judge,” Hudson said, almost — but not quite — as if gushing at an opportunity that had fallen on the lap of a close friend.

After all, this was no run-of-the-mill civil matter. This was Fox News, the behemoth that has emerged as perhaps the most influential network in the American media landscape, facing a $1.6 billion lawsuit for spreading lies about the 2020 election, and in particular a voting-machine company called Dominion. During a key stretch of November and December 2020, when President Joe Biden’s election win was clear but former President Donald Trump’s acolytes couldn’t accept it, Fox broadcasted stories suggesting Dominion was essentially a tool of Hugo Chavez — and that its voting equipment was used to flip untold numbers of votes from Trump to Biden.

None of that was true, and now Fox brass were going to pay — and Hudson wanted in on it.

He had litigated his share of cases in front of Davis, he said, so he knew the judge was up to the job. Davis is a guy “you learn not to test,” Hudson said, repeating the phrase “no-nonsense” more than once.

The dozens of reporters in the scrum itching to get a good spot to hear opening arguments in a case set to feature testimony from Rupert Murdoch and Maria Bartiromo and Tucker Carlson got a taste of that for themselves.

Journalists were — politely! — warned by Davis not to type too loudly on their computers for fear of prejudicing jurors. Prohibitions against sending tweets or any kind of communication from inside the courtroom were emphasized — by Davis and his staff — almost to the point of absurdity, even as the judge quipped with jurors that he would let them have drinks inside the courtroom, just no alcohol. Someone was ejected for taking a picture.

Davis kept his cool during his brief time on the high altar of American media. When a juror threw up his hands and exclaimed “Your honor, I can’t do this,” late in the jury selection process Tuesday morning, he excused the man and replaced him quickly. He may have had literally dozens of attorneys in front of him, may have faced the prospect of every procedural move he made being scrutinized on cable channels and in appellate courts, but he was ready.

Hudson, too, was ready — and pleased to have snagged his spot at the front of the pack (where he met a New York Times columnist) for what were supposed to be opening arguments Tuesday afternoon.

Delaware is the hub of commercial litigation for the legions of companies (including both Dominion and Fox) that are incorporated in the state. But this case was different. “That’s the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen in a Delaware courtroom,” Hudson told me.

    Until it wasn’t.

The first sign that a settlement might be brewing was the sheer passage of time. Instead of opening arguments beginning as expected at 1:30 p.m., hordes of attorneys and journalists found themselves packed into a courtroom with no action. One hour. Then two.

There were plenty of plausible reasons the proceedings might be held up, only to proceed in all their glory. Perhaps Judge Davis was still fuming about a dispute with Fox over whether it had properly disclosed materials in the discovery process. Or perhaps the two parties were still beefing over who would say what in their opening statements, and what might be objectionable therein. Or maybe another juror had gone rogue.

The reporter sitting next to me started to grapple with the sick reality of coming so close to witnessing the media news equivalent of a unicorn — Tucker Carlson on a witness stand — before I did. “I’m getting settlement vibes,” he muttered mid-afternoon.

I frantically scanned Twitter — a surefire violation of courtroom rules — and saw a tweet from a CNN reporter indicating Fox and Dominion attorneys had been spotted exchanging notes, a theoretical sign of a deal.

But it couldn’t be, could it? The First Amendment stakes were too great, the implications for the future of libel law too abstract, for this just to be a matter of money. Legal scholars I’d been talking to seemed to think Dominion was in this for ethical reasons, not just financial ones — they wanted to humiliate Fox and send a message after some of their own employees had been made to fear for their lives.

Then Judge Davis made his move.

Finally reentering the courtroom at 3:54 p.m., he seemed to take a moment to revel in the scene. It was almost over before it began.

‘“All well?” he asked Justin Nelson, an attorney for Dominion.

    “Yes, your honor.”

Moments later, hopes were dashed — dreams torpedoed. “The parties have resolved their case,” Davis told jurors, before opining about the quality of the lawyering on both sides.

Shocked reporters gasped and raced for the exits. There were stories to file. And for Dominion attorneys, there was a press conference to hold, one in which they would be asked — and not answer — whether, in addition to the $787,500,000 payout they had won, Fox had agreed to apologize to them.

It soon became apparent that there was no apology coming — that Murdoch was not going to record a PSA about election theft mythology and the responsibility of news organizations. Liberal fantasies were toast.

Instead, Dominion took the money and ran. And Bruce Hudson had to make do with a brief spectacle, one he had seemed to anticipate might be too good to be true earlier Tuesday afternoon.

As he put it, “Six weeks is a long time for people to be available.”

Nepal President Poudel hospitalised for second time in April

    [ad_1]

Kathmandu: Nepal’s President Ramchandra Poudel was admitted to a hospital here on Tuesday for the second time within a month after he complained of shortness of breath, a senior leader of the Nepali Congress said.

Poudel, 78, was taken to the Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. According to Baikuntha Thapaliya, the hospital’s administration chief, President Paudel is undergoing treatment.

“We rushed him to the hospital after his oxygen level dipped. He has been taking antibiotics for 15 days but his situation has not improved,” one adviser to the president was quoted as saying by the Kathmandu Post newspaper.

    MS Education Academy

Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ visited the hospital to inquire about Poudel’s health condition.

This is the second time President Poudel has been hospitalised within a month. Last week, the president complained of pain in his stomach.

A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday decided to deploy a team of government officials to facilitate his treatment.

The team will assess the nature of the president’s illness and report to the government, a minister said. Further decisions on the president’s treatment will be taken after the team submits its report.

Poudel of the Nepali Congress was elected as the new president of Nepal last month, in a relief to the fragile coalition government headed by Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’.

Poudel, a common candidate of the eight-party alliance that included the Nepali Congress and Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’-led CPN (Maoist Center), received the vote of 214 lawmakers of Parliament and 352 provincial assembly members.

Sri Lanka’s ex-AG summoned over 2019 Easter Sunday attacks

    [ad_1]

Colombo: Sri Lanka’s former Attorney General (AG), who claimed that there was a ‘grand conspiracy’ behind the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, has been summoned to the police special investigation unit to record a statement.

Ex-Attorney General Dappula de Livera has been summoned to the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) to appear on Wednesday following a direction by Justice Minister Wijayadasa Rajapakshe to the present AG to record a statement from the former AG.

Few days ahead of his retirement in 2021, Livera had stated that there was a ‘grand conspiracy with regard to the 2019 April Attacks’.

    MS Education Academy

Speaking to the media, the former AG had stated that the foreign violent extremist religious ideology was imported to Sri Lanka at some point and it played a key role in carrying out the attacks.

Livera had also claimed that the investigations into the coordinated attacks, carried out on three Christian churches and four hotels on April 21, 2019, were focused on three people living overseas including Abu Hind in India, and Lukman Thalib and son in Australia for their connection to the attacks.

Indian security agencies, which had followed the extremist movement in Sri Lanka, National Thowheeth Jama’ath and its leader Mohammed Zaharan, had shared detailed information about the attacks well ahead of the disaster but Sri Lankan security had to act on the details provided.

The multiple attacks killed nearly 270 people including foreigners and injured over 500.

Arithmetic of PM’s success has spoiled mathematics of ‘Modi bashing brigade’: Naqvi

    [ad_1]

Bharatpur: Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday said the arithmetic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s success has spoiled the “mathematics of the Modi bashing brigade”.

Speaking at an iftar event here, the former Union minister, without naming anyone, said some people are distressed over the continued failure of the disinformation drive against the prime minister.

“The arithmetic of PM Narendra Modi’s stupendous success has spoiled the mathematics of the Modi bashing brigade,” Naqvi said.

    MS Education Academy

Targeting the Opposition, he said the Congress and its allies are suffering from the “obstinacy of opposing” each and every policy of the Modi government.

The people of the country are intelligent and they understand that the “clan of corrupt and criminals” is trying to create speed breakers in the path of the country’s prosperity.

The prime minister is demolishing every speed breaker with the power of “inclusive empowerment”, he said.

The iftar event was organised by Ajmer Dargah Committee member Amin Pathan. A large number of religious leaders and other prominent personalities attended the event.

  • BJP sharpens attack on Congress in Karnataka

BJP sharpens attack on Congress in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: With the political temperature rising in Karnataka for the May 10 assembly polls, the BJP has sharpened its attack on the Congress with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stating that the opposition party has shown special love for Lingayat community after the elections were announced and pursued “divide and rule policy”.

BJP president JP Nadda, who was in Karnataka, also attacked the Congress and accused its leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of being “patron” of PFI.

“Former CM Siddaramaiah from Congress party withdrew cases against PFI, released 1,700 PFI activists from jail…Siddaramaiah is their patron…,” Nadda said in Hubballi. The Centre banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) in September last year.

    MS Education Academy

The Congress on Tuesday announced its candidate against Chief Minister Bommai from Shiggaon. The party has fielded Mohammed Yousuf Savanur from the seat. The party announced seven candidates on Tuesday and fielded former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar from Hubli-Dharwad-Central.

Jagadish Shettar’s resignation from BJP and his joining Congress on Monday has made Hubballi-Dharwad Central a key battle in the assembly polls. Shettar, a six-time MLA, represented the seat in the outgoing assembly and was keen to be given a ticket from the constituency.

He is the second senior leader from the Lingayat community to leave the ruling BJP and join Congress in less than a week. Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi had joined the Congress on Friday.

Basavaraj Bommai said voters from the Lingayat community “are vigilant and “have taken right decision when required”.

“Lingayat voters in Karnataka are vigilant and they have always taken the right decision when required. Congress Party has shown special love for them (Lingayat) after the Assembly elections were announced but it’s the same party which tried to divide the Lingayats and Veerashaivas. The people have not forgotten the divide-and-rule policy of the Congress party,” Bommai told reporters.

“All those leaders who joined Congress during the election would not make any impact on the BJP’s prospects. This time, the BJP will win more seats than in the 2018 Assembly polls,” he added.

Nadda, who also interacted with intellectuals in Dharwad, slammed the Congress saying that the party that “divided the country for seven decades is now itself divided”

“In the 70 years of Congress (rule) there was division, division, division and only division. Divide society as much as you can– north-south, language, caste, creed, religion. The fact is, by dividing and dividing, they themselves are divided now. BJP is unity in diversity,” Nadda said.

“In Tamil Nadu, 60 years back, they (Congress) were uprooted, till then they haven’t returned in the State. In kerala, they used to rule, but now they have shrunk from there too. In Karnataka, the fight is going on,” Nadda said.”You (Congress) were (in government) in Andhra Pradesh, in Telangana, you ruled both the States and now you have been wiped out from both the States,” he added.

He also spoke of the country’s development and foreign policy under the Modi government and referred to the de-hyphenation of India and Pakistan.

“Whenever any country spoke of India, it used to say ‘India-Pakistan’ together. Today, none of the countries mentions Pakistan, when it speaks of India. It’s because India moved ahead and Pakistan remained where it was,” he said.

BJP’s chief is on a two-day visit to the southern state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will embark on a visit to Karnataka from April 21. He will be in Davanagere on April 21 and in Devanahalli on April 22.

Shah is expected to attend Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organisational meetings in the run-up to the polls. Sources said Shah will meet the top BJP leaders in the state and hold a core group meeting.

Shah will also chair a meeting of the Election Campaign Committee and give his inputs to the team. He is also likely to chair a meeting of the Election Management Committee.

Meanwhile, former Congress MP B V Nayak has quit the party, after being denied a ticket to Devadurga constituency. Ticket has been given to his brother’s wife.
