How ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ got Sobhita Dhulipala to ‘do something different’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Sobhita Dhulipala, who’s best known for her part in “Raman Raghav 2.0”, talked about her transition to Tamil cinema and the portrayal of women in celebrated director Mani Ratnam’s period spectacle, “Ponniyin Selvan-2”.

Speaking with interaction with the media in the Capital on Tuesday evening, Dhulipala said: “This is my first Tamil film and the experience has been so exciting. I got a chance to work with Mani Ratnam sir and the amazing cast of the film. I relished every moment of it.”

She added: “The kind of work I did in this movie is very different from the previous ones. As actors we always want to do something different and this is what I got to do in this film.”

In the film, Dhulipala plays the character of Vaanathi, Princess of Kodumbalur. She is a shy but playful princess who is devoted to Ponniyin Selvan, or Rajaraja I, and wants to marry him.

Dhulipala pointed out that the film shows woman in a different light — women “who are soft yet strong and decision-makers too”. To this, her cast mate Trisha added: “Women in ‘PS-2’ are going to be stronger than they were in ‘PS-1’.”

Mutton Crazy Kashmir consumes over 800 truckloads of sheep this Ramdhan

*30-35 trucks arrive valley on daily basis, number to go up to 160 trucks ahead of Eid, says Mutton Dealers Association; People complain mutton sold at Rs 650 Rs 700 per kg*

    Raja Syed Rather

Srinagar, Apr 18 (KNO): Amid fluctuation in mutton rates, the demand of mutton has increased in the Valley as over 800 truckloads of sheep were consumed in the holy month of Ramdhan so far.

“Nearly 30-35 trucks loaded with sheep arrive in Kashmir on a regular basis in the past 27 days of Ramadan,” Mehraj ud Din, General Secretary of Mutton Dealers Association told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

He said there is no shortage of mutton in Kashmir, adding that the shortage of mutton would be possible in case the highway is closed for vehicular movement amid the prevalent weather conditions.

The General Secretary of the association further informed that so far a total of 811 trucks loaded with Sheep arrived in Kashmir since the beginning of Ramadan. “30-35 trucks arrive in Kashmir on a daily basis. The number of trucks ahead of Eid will go up to 160 a day,” he said.

Moreover, the consumers continue to complain that the mutton is being sold at Rs 650-700 per kg, adding that there has been no proper check on the ground as it seems that the mutton dealers and butchers have been let loose to loot the public as per their will.

“One fails to understand the need of issuing a rate list when it is not being implemented on the ground. It seems that the authorities concerned are reluctant to act against the mutton dealers and have been maintaining silence over the issue,” a consumer said.

He further said that a few months back, the concerned officials started a drive to act tough against the mutton dealers, but all in vain as the step has not yield any results for the consumers—(KNO)

Kedarnath Yatra: Maximum 13,000 pilgrims to visit Himalayan shrine every day

    [ad_1]

Rudraprayag: A maximum of 13,000 pilgrims can visit Kedarnath per day when the annual pilgrimage to the Himalayan temple in Uttarakhand begins on April 25.

The government has set the daily limit this time and a token system has also been introduced for the convenience of the pilgrims, Rudraprayag District Magistrate (DM) Mayur Dikshit told a press conference here on Tuesday.

These are meant for a smooth conduct of the yatra, the DM said.

    MS Education Academy

Dikshit and Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishakha Ashok Bhadane, who reviewed the arrangements for the forthcoming yatra, held a joint press conference.

The pilgrims will get better medical care this time with the deployment of 22 doctors and an equal number of pharmacists along the yatra route.

There will be three physicians and two orthopaedic surgeons among them, Dikshit said, adding that 12 medical relief points have also been set up along the route.

Six ambulances have been deployed along the route, of which three have been kept in reserve, and an air ambulance has also been arranged by the government for any emergency.

Sulabh International has been given the responsibility of keeping the yatra route clean, while the Kedarnath Nagar Panchayat has been assigned the task of keeping the temple premises clean.

Permanent toilets are being built by Sulabh International and for waste management, a QR-code system is being implemented for plastic and water bottles. Health examinations of horses and mules are also being conducted by the animal husbandry department along the yatra route.

Jal Sansthan has installed nine water purifiers from Sonprayag to Kedarnath Dham to provide pure drinking water to the pilgrims.

The DM said 2,500 people would be accommodated in Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) guesthouses from Guptkashi to Badi Lincholi.

Besides, two tent colonies with 80 beds each are being set up at New Ghoda Padav and Himlok Colony in Kedarnath Dham, which will accommodate 1,600 people.

The SP said 450 police officers and employees have been deployed to conduct the yatra in an orderly manner and arrangements for 150-200 police personnel from outside the state are being made.

A lost-and-found centre will also be operated during the yatra. Along with this, signboards have been prepared in different languages for the pilgrims coming from various states.

Additional parking lots have been identified to deal with the frequent traffic snarls during the pilgrimage, the officials said.

Talking to ANI, Prabhakar said, “The national awards for gram panchayats have been announced. Telangana, Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh are some states that bagged these awards. These awards have been given for the proper implementation of central government schemes in rural areas. This award is not given to the KCR government. This is not for the activities or schemes they (state government) have brought in.”

“It has been given for the work of the gram panchayats in regard to individual toilets, cleanliness, the Swatch Bharat project and others. • New Zealand inks pact with IIT Delhi

New Zealand inks pact with IIT Delhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Demonstrating its overall commitment to India, New Zealand on Tuesday announced an investment of 400K NZ dollars towards internationalisation and student mobility initiatives. These include further engagement with the New Zealand Centre at IIT Delhi to include fellowship grants and the re-launch of the partial scholarships under the New Zealand Excellence Awards. Around 10 different projects are currently going on at the IIT Delhi’s New Zealand centre.

The announcements were made at a roundtable session hosted at the New Zealand High Commission in the presence of David Pine, the New Zealand High Commissioner to India.

Speaking about the several initiatives taken to strengthen the educational ties between India and New Zealand, Pine said, “New Zealand and India share a longstanding relationship that has been growing through various mutually beneficial initiatives.

    MS Education Academy

“The New Zealand-India Education Week, which started on April 17, allows us to lay our ear to the ground and hear the key stakeholders so that New Zealand can continue its varied partnership and collaboration in India’s leading institutions.”

According to Pine, over 3,000 visa applications from India have been approved recently by New Zealand and most of these applications came from students. Over 90 per cent visa applications seeking higher education opportunity in New Zealand have been approved, the official said.

Education experts from New Zealand said that the educational ties between New Zealand and India are set to strengthen following one of Education New Zealand’s biggest events of the year, the India-New Zealand Education Week.

It will encourage a dialogue on research while fostering innovation and cultural exchange and cooperation in the context of international education.

Also, the New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) is a unique scholarship scheme designed exclusively for Indian students. The awards are jointly funded by Education New Zealand and all the eight New Zealand universities. Since the launch of the scholarship in 2016, it has supported over 200 Indian students to pursue overseas study at the world-class universities in New Zealand.

Education New Zealand’s Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, said, “New Zealand’s education system is future focussed and multicultural, offering the students an opportunity to earn work-ready degrees.”

“India is one of New Zealand’s priority partner countries for collaborations, exchanges and student mobility. We are excited that today’s announcements around the New Zealand Centre and the launch of the New Zealand Excellence Award scholarships demonstrate our commitment to India as an education partner,” said McPherson.

IIT Delhi’s James Gomes, Dean International, said, “The New Zealand Centre embodies IIT Delhi’s efforts to embrace internationalisation, providing opportunities for new research collaborations and global exposure to our students. The first round of jointly-funded research collaboration, awarded in 2022, has helped foster collaborative, sustainable and self-supporting research programmes.

“Today’s MoU has further enhanced the partnership and cooperation in research, teaching and fellowships between India and New Zealand and provides an opportunity to explore other innovative ventures.”

  • Canada needs 30 thousand new immigrants in agri sector: Report

Canada needs 30 thousand new immigrants in agri sector: Report

    [ad_1]

Toronto: Canada needs 30,000 permanent immigrants over the next decade to either start up their own farms, or take over existing ones, to address a looming labour crisis in the agriculture industry, says a new study.

According to a Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) research, 40 per cent of Canadian farm operators will retire by 2033, placing agriculture on the cusp of one of the biggest labour and leadership transitions in the country’s history.

Over the same period, a shortfall of 24,000 general farm, nursery and greenhouse workers is expected to emerge, and in 10 years, 60 per cent of today’s farm operators will be over the age of 65, that is, close to retirement.

    MS Education Academy

Amidst all this, 66 per cent of producers do not have a succession plan in place, leaving the future of farmland in doubt, the study said.

Canada’s agricultural sector is among the most diverse in the world though the degree of demand for foreign workers differs significantly by province and operation.

When it comes to more highly-skilled farm operators, Canada has always welcomed them from India, the Netherlands, China, the US and the UK.

However, in case of immigration of low-skilled labourers, better policies are needed because the Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW) program, which remains a critical source of low-skilled labour, is just a provisional solution to a chronic issue, the study said.

Many of these TFWs who develop skills essential to seeding and harvests, must return to their home countries for short periods, and if they are unable to return to Canada, the country’s on-farm workforce is dramatically reduced.

RBC researchers said that a pathway to permanent residency for experienced TFWs will immediately address this type of shortage.

Canada had started an agriculture-specific immigration pilot programme in 2020 to give a path to permanent residency for non-seasonal workers with experience, which is set to end in May 2023, a CBC News report said.

As of February 2023, more than 1,500 people have been admitted through the program in Ottawa province.

A department spokesperson told CBC that they are assessing the pilot programme “and the possible extension beyond its scheduled expiry”.

The spokesperson added that giving migrants permanent residence “is not the solution to labour shortages”.
