IPL 2023: Rajasthan Royals restrict Lucknow Super Giants to 154/7

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: A neat bowling performance helped Rajasthan Royals restrict Lucknow Super Giants to 154/7 despite Kyle Mayers’ fighting fifty in Match 26 of IPL 2023 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, here on Wednesday.

On a pitch which has not been easy for stroke-play, Lucknow did not lose a wicket in the powerplay but made only 37 runs.

From there, Rajasthan bowlers, led by Ravichandran Ashwin’s 2/23 and a terrific last over from Sandeep Sharma, kept things tight. Despite some big overs, Lucknow never got the desired finishing kick, with Mayers being the standout performer though he struggled to time the ball for a large part of his stay at the crease.

    MS Education Academy

Pushed into batting first, Lucknow had a sedate powerplay. With a hint of assistance for Rajasthan bowlers, as Trent Boult bowled a maiden opening over, KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers had to be circumspect though they took a boundary each off Sandeep in the second over.

Rahul was given a life on six when Yashasvi Jaiswal put down a straightforward catch at extra cover off Sandeep in the fourth over. In the same over, Rahul could have been run-out by a yard if Jaiswal had fired in a direct hit.

Rahul had another life at 12 when his mistimed loft was dropped by Jason Holder running back from mid-off in the fifth over. In the next over, Mayers survived a close run-out call at the non-striker’s end as replays showed Ashwin had hit the stumps with his arm.

Lucknow finally began to show signs of intent from the eighth over as Mayers launched a six off Holder over long-off while Rahul pulled him through mid-wicket for four. In the next over, Mayers hit Yuzvendra Chahal for a lofted six over long-off and a four swept past the keeper on successive balls, before Rahul slog-swept the leg-spinner for a massive 103-metre six.

Rahul’s lucky knock ended in the 11th over when he holed out to long-on off Holder, while Ayush Badoni’s promotion to number three ended in the next over when his attempted scoop resulted in uprooting his leg-stump off Boult.

Mayers drove and pulled Chahal for back-to-back fours before reaching his fifty in 40 balls. But Deepak Hooda, playing his 100th IPL game on his 28th birthday, holed out to deep square leg off Ashwin. Two balls later, the off-spinner struck again by castling Mayers with a quicker delivery.

At 129/4 in 18 overs, with the last four overs yielding only 25 runs, Nicholas Pooran attacked Holder by dispatching him over long-leg for six, followed by flicking and slicing for a brace of fours as 17 runs came off the 19th over.

In the final over, Sandeep surprised Marcus Stoinis with a short ball, resulting in a feather edge being caught by keeper Sanju Samson. A brilliant direct hit from Samson resulted in the run-out of Pooran, with him also affecting the run-out of Yudhvir Singh on the final ball.

CBI arrests gangster Chhota Rajan’s close aide Santosh Sawant

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Jailed gangster Chhota Rajan’s close aide Santosh Mahadeo Sawant was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation as he landed at Mumbai airport from Singapore, after being on the run for 18 years, officials said on Wednesday.

The agency was alerted by Interpol about the movement of Sawant, who was facing a Red Notice since 2012, from Singapore, they said.

“An application was filed before the competent court on behalf of said absconding accused (Sawant) for his surrender before the trial court.

    MS Education Academy

“The absconding accused, while landing at Mumbai Airport from Singapore, was secured by the Bureau of Immigration Department, Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai. Subsequently, he was handed over to CBI by the Immigration Department officials,” a CBI spokesperson said.

Sawant was produced before the trial court in Mumbai and was remanded in judicial custody till May 2, 2023, the spokesperson said.

Sawant, who allegedly handled the finances of Rajan, was booked by Mumbai Police on December 13, 2005 for allegedly extorting Rs 20 lakh from a builder and attempting to extort another Rs 20 lakh by extending death threats.

It was alleged that Sawant was extorting large sums of money from the builders who undertook the redevelopment work of old buildings in Tilak Nagar, Naidu Colony, Ghatkopar and other areas of Mumbai.

The case was transferred to the CBI after Rajan was brought back to India. The agency registered the case involving Sawant on April 7, 2016.

“A request for extradition of the absconding accused was also sent to Singapore through the Ministry of External Affairs.

“During further investigation, CBI had filed a supplementary charge sheet against three accused before the designated court at Mumbai,” the CBI spokesperson said.

Meta to slash around 4K high-skilled jobs this week: Report

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly set for another round of mass layoffs on Wednesday that will affect at least 4,000 highly-skilled employees, the media reported.

This week’s layoffs could be in the range of 4,000 jobs, according to a report in Vox, citing sources.

In March, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company would cut 10,000 jobs in the coming months.

    MS Education Academy

In an internal memo seen by The Washington Post, Meta said that “the company will begin notifying employees on its technical teams whose jobs are being cut”.

Meta will also announce newly reorganised teams and management hierarchies, the report mentioned.

“Facebook parent company Meta will announce details about new job cuts on Wednesday, part of a months-long downsizing and restructuring effort that will trim 10,000 employees amid multiple waves of layoffs,” The Washington Post tweeted on Wednesday.

In March, Zuckerberg announced to sack an additional 10,000 employees via several job cut rounds in the coming months.

Zuckerberg said that overall, “we expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven’t yet hired”.

The fresh cuts came just four months after he laid off 11,000 employees, or 13 per cent of the company, in November last year.

  • Indian diet, tea and turmeric lowered Covid severity, deaths: ICMR study

Indian diet, tea and turmeric lowered Covid severity, deaths: ICMR study

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Indian diet rich in iron, zinc, and fibre, regular consumption of tea, and use of turmeric in meals lowered severity and death due to Covid in the country, according to a study published in the April edition of the Indian Journal of Medical Research by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the death rate was reportedly 5-8 fold lower in India which is densely populated as compared to lesser-populated western countries.

The study, conducted by an international team of scientists including from India, Brazil, Jordan, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia, aimed to investigate whether dietary habits were associated with the variations in Covid-19 severity and deaths between Western and Indian population.

    MS Education Academy

“Our results suggest that Indian food components suppress cytokine storm and various other severity-related pathways of Covid-19 and may have a role in lowering severity and death rates from Covid-19 in India as compared to western populations,” said the researchers including from Centre for Genomics and Applied Gene Technology at Institute of Integrative Omics & Applied Biotechnology, in West Bengal, and Policy Center for Biomedical Research at Translational Health Science & Technology Institute in Haryana.

“However, large multi-centered case-control studies are required to support our current findings,” they added.

The findings showed that the components of Indian diets, which maintain high iron and zinc concentrations in blood and rich fibre in foods, played a role in preventing carbon dioxide (CO2) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated Covid-19 severity.

LPS is a common inflammatory mediator to induce inflammatory processes in the brain.

Further, regular consumption of tea by Indians helped maintain high HDL (high-density lipoprotein), also called “good” cholesterol. The catechins in tea also acted as a natural atorvastatin (a statin medication used to prevent cardiovascular diseases) in lowering triglyceride in blood.

Importantly, they said, regular consumption of turmeric in daily food by Indians led to a strong immunity.

The curcumin in turmeric may have prevented pathways and mechanisms associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and Covid-19 severity and lowered the death rate, said the researchers.

On the other hand, increased consumption of red meat, dairy products and processed foods resulted in an increase in the severity and death due to Covid in the western populations.

These foods “activate cytokine storm-related pathways, intussusceptive angiogenesis, hypercapnia and enhance blood glucose levels due to high contents of sphingolipids, palmitic acid and by-products such as CO2 and LPS” they wrote in the study.

Palmitic acid – the most common saturated fatty acid found in the human body – also induces ACE2 expression and increases the infection rate, the team said.

Coffee and alcohol that are highly consumed in western countries also led to an increase in severity and death rates from Covid-19 by deregulating blood iron, zinc and triglyceride levels.

For the study, the team used blood transcriptomes of severe Covid-19 patients from three western countries (showing high fatality) and two datasets from Indian patients.

Gene set enrichment analyses were performed for pathways, metabolites, nutrients, etc., and compared for Western and Indian samples to identify the food- and nutrient-related factors, which may be associated with Covid-19 severity.A

Data on the daily consumption of twelve key food components across four countries were collected and a correlation between nutrigenomics analyses and per capita daily dietary intake was also investigated.

BJYM activist killed in Karnataka; BJP calls it political murder

    [ad_1]

Dharwad: The murder of a BJP Yuva Morcha activist has taken a political in Karnataka turn with Union minister Pralhad Joshi dubbing it as a political murder.

Joshi’s remarks came after BJP Yuva Morcha activist and Koturu gram panchayat vice-president Praveen Kammara (36) succumbed to stab injuries on Tuesday night.

Bengaluru South MP and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) President Tejasvi Surya has also called it a political murder.

    MS Education Academy

The issue is likely to benefit the BJP to consolidate its vote bank in the backdrop of former CM Jagadish Shettar’s exit from the party, according to sources in the Hubballi-Dharwad region.

Joshi on Wednesday visited the SDM hospital in Dharwad to pay his condolences to Kammara’s family, and termed his killing as a political murder.

Kammara had reportedly intervened in a quarrel between two groups during the Udachamma religious festival in Koturu village, and pacified both sides. However, he was later fatally stabbed by a group of people.

“BJP’s grassroots level workers are being murdered. Earlier, BJP leader Yogesh Gowda was killed and now Kammara has been hacked to death,” Joshi said.

“We have asked the police to initiate suitable action in the matter. The state government must take stern action and deliver justice to the victim’s family. We are with his family. The exact reason for the murder is yet to be ascertained. But, we have got information that it was a political murder.

“Kammara was a good person who shared harmonious relationship with everyone. He belonged to the Lingayat-Panchamasali community. I am not alleging anything against anyone. We will compensate the family,” Joshi said.

Earlier, Tejasvi Surya said, “With deep anguish, we share the news of the murder of BJYM Dharwad unit executive member Praveen Kammara. He was brutally murdered by suspected political rivals late last night. BJYM demands immediate arrest of the killers.”

Dharwad SP Lokesh Jalsagar said that the police have detained four accused persons, including the prime suspect Raghavendra Pathath.
