Appeals court presses pause on House GOP subpoena to former Trump prosecutor

While the Judiciary committee has contended that it wants to study the potential effects that the threat of a future prosecution could have on a president while he is in office, Bragg argued that the House had no legitimate legislative purpose in issuing the subpoena and instead intends to examine the district attorney’s internal deliberations regarding the Trump indictment.
On Wednesday, a federal judge in Manhattan declined to block the subpoena to Pomerantz. “The subpoena was issued with a ‘valid legislative purpose’ in connection with the ‘broad’ and ‘indispensable’ congressional power to ‘conduct investigations,’” U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil wrote.
Bragg’s legal team appealed immediately to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, which ordered that Pomerantz’s deposition be put on hold. Jordan and the committee must file briefing to the appeals court by Friday, with Bragg’s response due Saturday.

Hyderabad: IPL betting rackets busted; property worth Rs 1.41 cr seized

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police on Wednesday busted massive cricket betting networks, arrested twelve persons in two separate cases and seized property worth more than Rs 1.41 crore.
According to the police, the accused were cricket bookies of organized online cricket betting rackets for the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 matches.
Rs 50 lakh in cash, 5 betting boards, 8 laptops, 62 mobile phones, 20 smartphones, 1 Tablet, 4 televisions, 1 Router and 4 four-wheelers were seized from their possession.

In the first case, the police arrested Muthina Vasanth Kumar, Kalidindi Venkata Ramaraju, Ponduri Venkat Sai and Kruthiventi Ramesh. Ayyappa alias Manikanta, the main bookie of Vasanth Kumar is absconding.
In the second case, the police arrested Chittibomma Karthik, Badam Veeresh, Bandari Shiva Kumar, Middela Manoj Kumar, Chintala Venkata Padma Chandra Mohan Rao, Chandrapati Satish Kumar, Manne Sathyanarayana alias Satish and Patapati Ravi Varma. Kumar, Pandu, Sk Jilani, and Prabhakar, the main bookies, in this case, are absconding.
Nine of the accused persons in the case are residents of Andhra Pradesh.
The city police advised the public to be wary of the following Apps: Bet 365, MPL, Betway, Dream Guru, My 11 Circle, Bet 365, Coral, Bwin, 777 Bet, Dafabet, Winner, Cricket Betting 2020, Just Bet, Betfred, and Lotus Cricket Line.

UP police recreate Atiq Ahmed’s murder as ‘part of investigation’

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of UP police recreated the murder scene in Colvin Hospital, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
Gangster-turned-politician Atiq and his brother were shot dead amid heavy police security and press persons by three people on April 15 while they were being taken for a medical checkup.
Lovelesh Tiwari, Arun Maurya and Sunny Singh shot the brothers at point-blank range leading to their instant deaths. Their murder was captured on LIVE TV spurring widespread condemnation by opposition parties and raising law and order questions by the Yogi Adityanath-led state government.

The murder led to the suspension of five police officers, including Shahganj police station in-charge Ashwani Kumar Singh, a sub-inspector and three constables.
The state government formed a three-member judicial commission to investigate the killings. The commission, headed by retired Justice Arvind Kumar Tripathi of Allahabad High Court, retired district judge Brijesh Kumar Soni, and retired IPC officer Subesh Kumar Singh, has been asked to submit a report in two months.
On Thursday, the Uttar Pradesh police officials recreated the scene where two men in white kurta-pyjama and a headscarf surrounded by police personnel are being taken to the Colvin Hospital. Just like the day of the murder, they are surrounded by media personnel.
The interaction with the media continues for a few minutes when two men (who were standing nearby) came up to them and opened fire. The two men pretend to lie dead. The whole scene was videographed.

Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Bhanu Bhaskar, Police Commissioner Ramit Sharma and Joint Commissioner of Police Akash Kulhari were present when the scene was being recreated. Police said recreating the crime scene is likely to provide clues in the investigation and on the basis of them the accused can be interrogated.

Haj 2023: Last date for Saudi pilgrims to pay final instalment

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Haj and Umrah has announced the 10th Shawwal as the last date for domestic pilgrims to pay the final instalment of the upcoming Haj 1444 AH.
The final instalment is estimated at 40 percent and the reservation’s status will be confirmed when completing all the instalments at its specified times.
As per a report by the Arabic daily Okaz, it noted that the reservation will be cancelled if the instalments are not completed.

It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Haj and Umrah allowed the option of paying the costs of the Haj package in instalments.
The ministry has set 20 percent for the first instalments, as pilgrims were obligated to pay the first instalment within 72 hours from the date of registration.
The second instalment payment of 40 percent of the total cost was scheduled for Rajab 7.
The third and final instalment must be paid no later than the 10th of Shawwal, less than two months before the start of the pilgrimage season due in late June this year.

The issuance of official permits will begin on the 15th of Shawwal corresponding to May 5.

Ganga Pushkaram 2023: SCR announces 18 special trains for Telangana

Hyderabad: The South Central Railway (SCR launched 18 special trains between April 22 and May 9 for various locations in Telangana to to clear the rush of passengers during the Ganga Pushkaram festival.
The festival of river Ganga usually occurs once in 12 years. Booking for the trains will begin on April 21, said a press release from SCR.
Secunderabad – Raxaul – Secunderabad
The SCR release stated that train No. 07007 (Secunderabad-Raxaul) and train No.07008 (Raxaul-Secunderabad) will stop at Bolarum, Medchal, Akanapet, Kamareddy, Nizamabad, Mudkhed, Nanded, Purna, Baumar, Hingoli Deccan, Washim Akola, Bhusawal Khandwa In Itarsi Ja, Pipariya, Jabalpur, Katni, Satna, Manikpur, Prayagraj Check In P. DD Upadhyaya, Buxar, Patliputra, Hajipur, Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi In in both the directions.

SCR said these special trains will consist of AC II Tier, AC III Tier, AC 2 Tier cum AC 3 Ter, Sleeper and General Second-Class matches.
Tirupati – Danapur – Tirupati
Whereas, Train No.97419 Tirupati-Danapur and Danapur- Tirupati, these trains will stop at Resigua, God, Nellor, Ongule, Chirala, Tall Khammam, Warangal, Peddapalli, Ramagundam, Bellampalli, Sirpur Kaphanage, Nagra Pipariya, Jabalpur, Kani, Sata, Manikper, Prayagaj Chheski J, P. DO Upedyaya, Bar and Ara In stations in both the direction
These trains will consist of AC II Tier, AC III Tier, AC 2 Tier com AC 3 The Sperand General Second-Class coaches.
Guntur – Banaras – Guntur

BJP slams Cong for appointing ‘anti-national’ Imran Pratapgarhi as star campaigner

Bengaluru: Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje on Thursday took strong exception to the inclusion of Rajya Sabha member Imran Pratapgarhi in the list of 40 star campaigners of the Congress for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections, calling him an “anti-national”.
The Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and BJP’s Karnataka Election Management Committee Convener also sought to know the “connection” between Congress and slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed, who was recently shot dead in Uttar Pradesh.
“The person who should have been arrested for standing in support of Atiq, has become the star campaigner. What is the relation between Atiq Ahmed and Congress?” the minister sought to know.

She alleged that Pratapgarhi is a close friend of Ahmed and used to call the latter as his “guru” and brother. The MP used to write poetry in praise of Ahmed, who used to take part in ‘mushairas’ (a gathering at which Urdu poetry is read), Karandlaje said.
“Despite knowing that Imran Pratapgarhi was involved in ‘anti-national activities’, you (Congress) send him to the Rajya Sabha and appoint him as Karnataka’s star campaigner,” she said, lashing out at the opposition party, which released its list of star campaigners on Wednesday.
The ruling BJP is fighting the Assembly polls against its principal rival Congress while the JD(S) is also an important player in the state.
Karnataka will vote in a single phase on May 10 and the results are scheduled to be out on May 13.
