Syed Maqbool Hasan was the Shahr Qazi of Allahabad ( my home town ) for over half a century.
Although he was also the Imam ( head priest) of Jama Masjid in Allahabad, he never took any money from the funds of Jama Masjid, and earned his livelihood as an ordinary stamp vendor in Allahabad High Court.
When I was a lawyer there ( 1970-1991) I used to see him sitting at the bottom of the stairs below the Bar Association Library, selling stamps. He wore a simple kurta pyjama, and on looking at him one could never make out that he was the Shahr Qazi.
Until he agreed, Eid could not be declared in Allahabad. Since for declaring Eid two respectable Muslims must state that they have sighted the moon, he would rigorously cross examine the persons claiming that they had seen the moon, and he also strictly applied the parameters required before declaring Eid. His integrity was of such a high order that everyone in Allahabad accepted his verdict.
Because of old age ( if alive he must be now in his 90s ) he retired, but before that he was coming to the High Court on a bicycle every working day from his home several miles away.
In 1986 communal riots broke out in Allahabad, but he refused to take any police security, although it was offered to him.
He lived a simple life, and put all the money he earned in educating his children. Today one of his sons is in U.S.A. and the other children are also well settled, some in business, and others in other vocations.
If he is alive, I request people in Allahabad to convey my Eid greetings to him.

United Nations: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday discussed the worsening situation in Sudan with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and said the focus is really on how to get the diplomatic processes to yield the desired result of a workable, on-the-ground observed ceasefire.
Jaishankar met Guterres and also discussed a range of issues, including India’s presidency of the G20 and the Ukraine conflict.
Jaishankar said the focus is really on how to get the diplomatic processes to yield the desired result of a workable, on-the-ground observed ceasefire.
He is headed on a nine-day trip to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic beginning on Friday, his first visit as the external affairs minister to these Latin American countries and the Caribbean.
Before his travel to Latin America, he arrived in New York and met the UN chief at the UN headquarters here on Thursday afternoon.
Noting that he had a “very good meeting” with Guterres, Jaishankar said once the fighting in Sudan started out, “I felt that it was very important” that he met the UN Secretary-General Guterres.
“Most of our meeting was on the Sudan situation. We also of course discussed the G20 and we also spend some time on the Ukraine conflict. But essentially it was about the Sudan” situation, he said.
Jaishankar said that in Sudan, the UN is at “the heart of the efforts” to establish a ceasefire.
“And that is really key because at the moment, unless there is a ceasefire and unless there are corridors, it is not safe for people to really come out,” he said.
“The UN is doing its bit talking to everybody. We of course have obviously very strong interest in the matter because so many Indians are there,” Jaishankar added.
Around 300 people, including an Indian, have been killed, and more than 3,000 injured in clashes in Sudan, according to the World Health Organisation. The violence between forces from Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on Saturday.
Noida: A Noida resident who allegedly duped people by flaunting on social media morphed images with ministers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been arrested, police officials said on Thursday.
The accused defrauded people by assuring them tenders and government jobs by claiming link with top officers and ministers, the officials said.
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Kashif (36), who lives in a high-rise society in Sector 107. He was arrested by the Special Task Force of the UP Police on Wednesday, an officer said.
“He had posted his morphed pictures on social media which purportedly showed him interacting with some ministers in central government as well as the state government. He also had edited his picture which showed him with PM Modi,” the police officer said, wishing to not to be named.
“He had used these morphed images to flex connection with top government officers and ministers and duped people by assuring them tenders or job in government departments,” the officer added.
Kashif was held from Greater Noida on Wednesday by an STF team. The police have impounded a Mercedes car used by him and seized three Apple iPhones, according to the official.
An FIR has been lodged under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 467, 468, 471 (all related to forgery) as well under provisions of the Information Technology Act, the police said.
He was produced before a local court on Wednesday and has been remanded in judicial custody, the police added.
New Delhi: Wing Commander Deepika Misra on Thursday became the first woman officer in the Indian Air Force to be presented a gallantry award.
According to an IAF spokesperson, Misra, a helicopter pilot hailing from Rajasthan, was conferred a Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) for an act of “exceptional courage” displayed during a flood relief operation in Madhya Pradesh.
IAF chief Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari presented the Yudh Seva Medal and other awards to several officers and air warriors at an Investiture Ceremony held at the Air Force Auditorium in Subroto Park here.
While two IAF officers were awarded Yudh Seva Medal, 13 officers and air warriors received Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), 13 officers Vayu Sena Medal and 30 got Vishisht Seva Medal, the spokesperson said.
A total of 58 people — 57 from the IAF and one from the Army — received the awards, he said.
Talking about Wing Commander Misra, he said she is the first woman officer of the Indian Air Force to get a gallantry award in the history of the IAF.
For devotion to service, women from the IAF have received awards in the past, but this is the first time that a gallantry award has been conferred on a woman officer of the IAF, he added.
According to information shared by the IAF, Misra was “detailed to undertake humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in response to flash floods” in northern Madhya Pradesh in August 2021.
The rescue operation that included low hover pick-ups and winching lasted for an exhaustive eight days and she saved lives of 47 people, including women and children.
Her efforts of bravery and courage not only saved precious lives in a natural calamity but also instilled a sense of safety amongst the common populace in the flood-affected area, officials added.
Personnel from IAF’s Garud unit, who had taken part in a rescue operation after the at Trikut Hills ropeway accident in Jharkhand’s Deoghar, considered one of the toughest rescue operations, were also among the awardees, as also those personnel who had taken part in anti-insurgency operations in Kashmir valley.
Among the 30 who got Vishisht Seva Medal, 29 are from the IAF and one from the Army, officials said.
Brig G Muthukumar from the Corps of Engineers received a Vishisht Seva Medal for his services for the IAF.
“I was earlier working the chief engineer for a couple of years, with the IAF at its South Western Air Command. I am glad the Army gave me opportunity to work with the Air Force, and IAF recognised my services. I feel very proud,” he told PTI.
Warrant Officer Ashok Kumar was also presented with a Vishisht Seva Medal for his services to the force.
The IAF officer has led the contingent for more than 15 years and has participated in Republic Day celebrations on Rajpath (now Kartavya Path) for the past 27 years.
This year the IAF band contingent was also led by Warrant Officer Kumar.
“I am feeling humbled and proud to receive this award. I must thank my family, especially my wife for supporting my journey with the IAF,” the officer told PTI.
Family member and spouses of various awardees were also present on the occasion.

A handful of Senate Democrats have yet to commit to confirming Su, who stepped in as acting secretary after Marty Walsh left the Labor Department’s top job in mid-March to take over as head of the NHL players’ union.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), one of Su’s chief proponents, downplayed concerns about her confirmation, saying her endorsement from Walsh, who was popular with some Republicans, and meetings with senators will help convince moderates to vote for her.
“She’s doing the best job of the whole thing, which is she’s sitting down and making herself available and she’s had a very good meeting with a large number of” senators, Duckworth said in an interview. “And so I think it’s progressing very nicely.”
Duckworth added: “I think she’s making the case for herself. And I think Marty Walsh coming out as strongly as he has in support of her work, is a very helpful voice to have out there.”
Su told the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which is weighing her nomination, she would be an honest broker in the job.
“I have been a leader dedicated to finding and expanding the vast areas of common ground between employers and employees,” she said. “I believe that the Department of Labor should make it as easy as possible for employers to keep workers safe on the job.”
Business groups have targeted Su, fearful that she would pursue regulations that would have major ramifications for app-based companies like Uber and Lyft, franchise restaurants and other employers. The gig-job companies, for instance, are battling efforts to make it easier to reclassify some workers as as employees, which would strain their business models.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who chairs the Senate committee considering Su’s nomination, cited that industry pressure in his opening remarks Thursday praising Su.
“The debate over Ms. Su really has nothing to do with her qualifications,” he said. “This debate really has everything to do with the fact that she is a champion of the working class in this country.”
Republicans spent much of Thursday’s hearing trying to poke holes in Su’s record at the Labor Department and as a top labor official in California before that, hoping to crack Democratic unity.
Republicans hammered Su for her stewardship of California’s unemployment insurance system, which issued tens of billions in wrongful or fraudulent payments in the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic. As labor secretary, Su would be in charge of the federal-state partnership on UI.
“The buck stops at the top,” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said. “You’re the person running UI, you’re the one who decided to waive the guardrails … the idea of promoting a person who’s had that experience to a position of leadership of the entire Department of Labor makes no sense at all.”
GOP senators also pressed Su for regulatory commitments on independent contractor and joint employer regulations. Su reiterated the Labor Department’s position that it does not have the authority to impose a test similar to California’s controversial “ABC” test for whether a worker is an employee or not and said that the department does not plan to pursue a joint employment rule, which could make companies like fast-food chains liable for violations at their franchises.
“There’s not a joint-employer rule on our regulatory agenda,” Su said, adding that she understands the value of the franchise model given her family’s experience running a pizza shop after immigrating from China.
Republicans also criticized her for a relative lack of experience brokering collective bargaining negotiations — a specialty of Walsh’s — a move geared at sowing doubts among the undecided cohort that includes Sens. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).
Su’s nomination is a high-stakes test for Sanders, who took the committee’s gavel in January, as well as the White House, which has at times struggled to shepherd labor nominees through the narrowly divided Senate.
The HELP committee has scheduled a confirmation vote for Su next Wednesday, which would clear the way for a final floor vote later in the year.
Kelly and Tester both said Thursday they’re still undecided on whether they will support her for the position, with Tester saying that he plans to meet one-on-one with Su next week “hopefully.”
Democrats’ calculus is further complicated by the ongoing absence of Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.), who is recovering from shingles and has not been in Washington for several weeks.
When asked about any concerns to get Su confirmed, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer dodged the question and said: “She’s a great nominee and we’re working hard to get her confirmed.”
Su has won the support of some business groups, such as the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, but her strongest support comes from labor unions and organizations representing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. If confirmed, Su would be Biden’s first AAPI Cabinet secretary and join three other AAPI Cabinet members.
Unions have recently begun stepping up their efforts on behalf of Su. The AFL-CIO is rolling out a six-figure campaign that includes ads in D.C. and Arizona — home to Kelly and Sinema, both of whom voted to confirm Su as deputy secretary but are on the fence — and is considering whether to expand to other states.
“This is the time for them to show who they stand with: Is it workers, or is it big corporations?” AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler told reporters Wednesday. “If you voted for her as deputy secretary, the only thing that’s changed is that she has actually more experience and more expertise.”
