Strict action against investigators found negligent in probing 2008 Jaipur blast case: Gehlot

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday said strict action will be taken against investigators found guilty of negligence in probing the Jaipur serial bomb blast case in which all the accused were recently acquitted by the high court.

He also said the suicide of a man in Jaipur due to alleged harassment and the incident of misbehavior with a police head constable in Churu were unfortunate developments.

The chief minister said that district authorities should be active in protecting the poor people from the harassment by influential people.

Gehlot was addressing a review meeting on law and order here.

Referring to the acquittal of the 2008 Jaipur bomb blast case accused last month, the chief minister said strict action will be taken against those who were negligent in conducting the investigation.

The Rajasthan high court on March 29 acquitted the accused who were awarded capital punishment by a lower court. The high court had slammed the investigation.

Seventy-one people were killed and 185 others injured in a series of blasts on May 13, 2008 at places including Chandpole Gate, Badi Chaupad, Chhoti Chaupad, Johri Bazar and Sanganeri Gate.

In the review meeting, the chief minister also expressed concern over the incident of harassment of poor.

“The chief minister said that the incident of harassment and suicide of a poor person for building a hotel in Jaipur is very sad. The district administration should take cognisance of such incidents and take prompt action,” a release quoting him as saying.

PHED minister Mahesh Joshi is one of the accused booked for abetment to suicide after a man, named Ramprasad, committed suicide on Monday over a land-related dispute. Before taking the extreme step, he shot a video and blamed Mahesh Joshi and others.

The chief minister also reacted to the report of alleged misbehavior with a traffic head constable in Churu by some men and said that strict action should be taken against them so that the morale of the police administration is raised.

A video of the sobbing policeman had gone viral recently.

The chief minister reviewed the crime situation in the state. It was informed in the meeting that the time taken in the investigation of the cases of atrocities on women has reduced since 2019.

In 2019, average time in the investigation of such cases was 108 days which has reduced to 41 days, the release said, adding that 1,344 persons have been given punishment in rape and POCSO cases while 13 have been given death penalty since 2019.

Hyderabad: Meet Arhaan, 18-month-old artist with national, international awards

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Arhaan Sai Gourishetty, an 18 months old artist from Hyderabad has received four international awards, two national awards and many other awards at a tender age.

The kid who is not even two years in age has used 43 techniques to create 50 contemporary fluid art paintings.

The accolades of the artist include the World Book of Records, Asia Book of Records, India Book of Records and Telugu Book of Records Arhaan’s mother Snehitha said that they had introduced Ahaan to painting at a very young age as a sensory activity, and then it was found that he has more interest in painting.

    MS Education Academy

“We introduced painting to our son as a sensory activity. Apart from Arhaan, there are three other kids in my family and thus every weekend would be an art session in our house. Since he was very young, we introduced him to many different activities. Then we saw that Ahaan’s interest is more towards art rather than puzzles,” she said.

She also said that since Ahaan was not able to handle brush at this age, he was introduced to other art forms like fluid arts.

“Ahaan used 43 techniques in his artwork and at the age of 17 months, he was able to do 50 contemporary paintings. As parents, even we were left wondering looking at his work. We as parents do not involve in his artwork-making, don’t even guide him. We just give him the colours and let him explore and play with the colours. We are not worried about how the output would be. However, to our wonder all the paintings come out very well,” she further said.

    ANI 20230420222058

Ahaan’s mother said that they also submitted their son’s works to the World Book of Records and immediately got approval from them. His works were also submitted to some art galleries and curators.

“At the same time, he was able to get four international and two national records also. We don’t have any plans for him as he is just 18 months. If he is interested in arts in the future, he would continue. We have very good family support for any field he chooses to pursue,” she added.

Arhaan’s father, Gourishetty Arun Sai told ANI that their son has been recognised by the Cultural department of central government as well as many more art-cultural societies.

    ANI 20230420222112

“When he was very young, we introduced him to many sensory activities like painting, texture, playing with different materials and others. But, we found that he was more interested in painting and we thought we will pursue this even more so that he could improve further. When he was around 14 months, we let him play with colours. It was more like home learning,” he said.

He added, “Usually, the children of these age groups spill around colours, but instead, Ahaan was more focused on drawing and art. He never used to spill paint outside the canvas board. He is not attending any professional courses now as he is too young to be trained. Whatever he does, it is what comes to him naturally.”

  • Little evidence that China is seriously approaching its India talks with a sense of goodwill: US

Little evidence that China is seriously approaching its India talks with a sense of goodwill: US

    [ad_1]

Washington: Reiterating that the United States supports a resolution of the Indo-China border dispute through a negotiated settlement and direct conversations between the two countries, Biden Administration’s point person for South and Central Asia on Thursday said the US sees little evidence that Beijing is seriously approaching these talks with a sense of goodwill.

“Our position on India’s border dispute with China is long-standing. We support a resolution of that border dispute through a negotiated settlement and through direct conversations between the two countries,” Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu told PTI in an interview.

“Having said that, we see little evidence that the Chinese government is seriously approaching these talks with a sense of goodwill. What we see is the opposite. We see provocations that happen on the line of actual control on a pretty regular basis,” Lu said in response to a question.

    MS Education Academy

India, the senior State Department official said, can count on the United States’ standing with India as it faces the challenge of its northern neighbour.

“We demonstrated that resolve in 2020 during the Galwan crisis, and we continue to find opportunities to cooperate with India on information but also on military equipment, exercises and that will go forward into the years ahead,” he said.

A top American think-tank Centre for a New American Security in a report last month said the increased prospect of India-China border hostility has implications for the United States and its Indo-Pacific strategy.

As the United States considers the role that India will play in the Indo-Pacific and how to maximise US-India cooperation to meet security challenges in the region, US policymakers must closely monitor and be prepared to respond quickly to future India-China border crisis, said the report authored by Lisa Curtis who served as deputy assistant to the president and NSC senior director for South and Central Asia from 2017 to 2021 and senior defence analyst Derek Grossman.

The report recommended the Biden Administration that to help deter and respond to further Chinese aggression along the border with India, the United States should elevate Indian territorial disputes with China on par with Beijing’s assertiveness against other US allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific and ensure this is reflected in all national security related documents and speeches.

“Offer India the sophisticated military technology it requires to defend its borders and initiate co-production and co-development of military equipment. Assist India in strengthening its maritime and naval capacity, and conduct joint intelligence reviews with India to align assessments of Chinese plans and intentions along the LAC and enhance coordination with Indian officials on contingency planning in the event of a future India-China conflict,” it said.

It urged the US to establish or support an official or unofficial organisation charged with collating unclassified commercial satellite imagery on the position of PLA troops along the LAC and disseminate these images routinely for public consumption. “Criticise Beijing’s efforts at land-grabbing in multilateral forums, including the UN, Shangri-La Dialogue, G20, and East Asia Summit.

Message Pakistan and enlist help from Islamabad’s other important partners to convey similar points about the need to stay neutral in the event of a potential future India-China border flare-up. And be prepared to extend full support to India, in the event of another border crisis or conflict,” recommended the think-tank in its report.

  • El Nino may spur deadly heat waves in India

El Nino may spur deadly heat waves in India

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Climate models have predicted that El Nino is on the horizon, which can lead to severe heat waves and droughts, in many countries, including India.

El Nino is associated with a band of warm ocean water that develops in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific, including the area off the Pacific coast of South America. During El Nino, winds blowing west along the equator slow down, and warm water is pushed east, creating warmer surface ocean temperatures.

Last month, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) warned of a likely spike in temperatures globally this year, due to the warming El Nino event.

    MS Education Academy

El Nino will mean extreme weather around the globe and making it “very likely” the world will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming. The hottest year in recorded history, 2016, was driven by a major El Nino.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted a 70 per cent chance of El Nino in India. While the agency has predicted a normal monsoon, it said El Nino can affect the monsoon. The impact of El Nino may be felt during the second half of monsoon season.

Latest climate models also suggest the phenomenon could develop as early as May 2023. This can possibly weaken the southwest monsoon season, which brings around 70 per cent of the total rainfall India receives and on which most of its farmers still depend.

On one hand, the El Nino event will lead to heatwaves and droughts in India, South Africa, Australia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Islands. On the other hand, it will mean heavy rainfall and flooding in regions like California in the US and could also cause bleaching and death of coral reefs.

Heatwaves in India are already increasing in frequency, intensity and lethality, burdening public health, agriculture, and other socio-economic and cultural systems.

According to an alarming study led by Indian-origin researchers at the University of Cambridge about 90 per cent of India and almost all of Delhi is in danger zone from heat wave impact.

The study, published in PLOS Climate, suggests that heatwaves made more likely by climate change may impede India’s progress toward its sustainable development goals (SDG). It showed that heatwaves in India and the Indian subcontinent become recurrent and long-lasting, it is high time that climate experts and policymakers reevaluate the metrics for assessing the country’s climate vulnerability.

“This is a critical policy measure from an urban sustainability viewpoint that can promote resilient methods of mitigation and adaptation in cities like Delhi that are particularly vulnerable to heatwaves,” they said.

‘Looking at it positively, says Jaishankar in Afghan meeting to be hosted by UN

    [ad_1]

United Nations: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Thursday that India is looking “positively” at the meeting of Special Envoys on Afghanistan to be hosted by UN chief Antonio Guterres in Doha next month.

UN Secretary-General Guterres will be hosting the meeting in Doha on May 1 and 2.

“We’re looking at it. We’re looking at it positively, but I guess we’ll take a call closer to the time but we are looking at it,” Jaishankar said here in response to a question on whether India will be participating in the meeting.

    MS Education Academy

St phane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said the purpose of the small group meeting is to reinvigorate the international engagement around the common objectives for a durable way forward on the situation in Afghanistan.

“The Secretary-General has said and continues to believe that it’s an urgent priority to advance an approach based on pragmatism and principles, combined with strategic patience, and to identify parameters for creative, flexible, principled, and constructive engagement.

“It is his aim that the discussions, which will be held behind closed doors, can contribute to a more unified consensus regarding the challenges ahead,” Dujarric said.

Jaishankar is on his way to South America, beginning a nine-day trip to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic on Friday.

Before his visit, he arrived in New York and met Guterres, discussing the situation in Sudan with the UN chief.

  • Are we facing a summer of sporting protests? – podcast

    [ad_1]

It began with a protest at Britain’s biggest horse racing event. Members of the activist group Animal Rising scaled the fences at Aintree and attempted to stop the Grand National. As stewards and fans intervened, the protest managed only to delay the race for 14 minutes. As if to help prove the protesters’ point, one of the horses in the race was killed in a fall.

As chief sports reporter Sean Ingle tells Nosheen Iqbal, it was followed just days later by a stunt by another activist group. This time the target was the World Snooker Championship; play was postponed when a Just Stop Oil protester managed to clamber on to the the snooker table and launch an orange powder bomb over proceedings. This weekend, all eyes will be on the London Marathon.

As environment correspondent Damien Gayle reports, the pivot away from mass protest to high-profile stunts shows a divergence in philosophies that still divides the climate action movements. Is building popular support more important? Or bringing the maximum attention to the cause?
